I think discord should honestly make the "join servers for you" permission only allowed by request which needs to be manually verified, similar to some intents.

i genuinely trusted them, but i was on my phone at the time since i was eating lunch, so i said i'd play later. when i got back to my computer, they messaged me hours later but i wasnt in the mood to download it so i just didn't, plus it was late.
i probably would have gotten hacked if i wasnt eating lunch, since i did intend on downloading it but i just forgot to lmao
"If they never show up on your doorstep" is a misleading analogy. This is like putting secret laser traps on your doorstep or something, and your friendly neighbor who just wants to come give you a cookie they baked gets zapped by it. Really fucking annoying when I just want to send someone something innocuous about their status or some meme they posted but they have this setting on. Please don't.
If spambots are a massive issue for you, check often to see mutual servers for the bots, and find out which one is the problem. Then, go into privacy settings on that server and disable non-friend DMs ONLY FOR THERE, and not globally.
But i want to keep my roasting skills sharp.
Just passing by the comments to help to spread that message.
I know people can fall for this and I will do everything I can to help people to see how to escape that trap!

I think the one good use for 'join servers for you' is as a reward tier in some services such as Patreon (which they do ask for this permission). However, I really think Discord needs to implement some sort of safeguard that informs the user if they leave then get auto re-added. Imagine leaving a server, getting re-added, but getting a prompt "We have detected you have left and are being re-added with . How would you like to proceed? [Re-Join] [Prevent Re-Joining] [Prevent Re-Joining & Remove ]" along with a "never ask again" button for those off chances where it is a good use. A simple confirmation for abuse is such an easy answer/solution to an otherwise shady scam. Discord probably assumes users know 'where Authorized Apps' is, but the fact is most users are... well, if they fell for the scam, do I need to say it? As someone who works in IT, users constantly surprise me at how unwilling they are to use their brains. Trying to think of a way to say this without flagging the algorithm.
I can think of two things. Make the join servers thing an opt in service. Basically you need to manually opt into it whenever a bot asks for it.
The second solution is just...whenever a bot joins a server for you. It gives you a notice that says "service xyz has added your account to this server"
The 3rd solution is to add stricter rate limits to the api call.
how do people still fall for this 😭

One of my suggestions to improve Discord Bot's is, they have to verify once a month. If they dont verify within week of the start of the month, the discord bot will be taken down/unverified. This would eliminate the issue of bot developers losing their bots, and being sold on the discord bot black market, and turn into a scam bot
When you talked about the people who don't subscribe to your channel, the subscribe button animated and flashed a bit, that was great timing
Neat little fact actually! I've found that it happens consistently with anyone saying the word subscribe. (At least when I'm looking for it)
Thinking youtube uses the auto closed captioning for detection or something for the button.
The "Join servers for you" permission is used by Patreon for Discord benefits. Just yoinking the permission would jeopardize a lot of creators on Patreon, though that's not to say it's impossible for Discord to arrange something with Patreon like they did with Twitch.

Discord should just either 1) make a flag system over all bot messages saying nitro (and deriv's like n1tr0)
Or just ban same messages.
Also to make that permission page to be more "dangerous looking" and to alarm more of "hey, if you don't know who sent this or know what you are doing, go back"
Thanks so much for this. I realized I had given access to a few of the bots shown in the video, but was never "jailed." I just went through and took out the sus bots and left bots that are used for discord server list that have the join servers for you permission alone
I think for the join Servers Permission you should need a approval, where you need a extreme good reason to get it. All Scam Bots won't be gone, but it would reduce the scams massively.

An idea to get around this is first make sure the user knows what bot brought them to the server and give an option to disable the application, next if a user keeps leaving a server only for an application to bring them right back perhaps another button/popup would be useful (also reporting the bot or something)
Solution: limit the amount of times a certain authorized app can pull a single user into a sever. Maybe the counter resets once a day or something. But this only delays the problem. Discord could also add a notification that a authorized app joined you to a server.

Congrats for the sponsor!!!! You deserve it
A bot should need your express permission to join a server for you, the UI should make it clear that it's a bot doing it, and you should be able to revoke that particular permission at any time (including directly in the theoretical new approve/deny window for letting it add you to a server) and not see the prompt again unless you go into the Apps screen and reenable it.
Thank you for letting me know this for weeks now I've been getting re added to a server periodically and had no idea how to stop it thanks.

Imma Soup Scribe to you. I love that you aren't afraid of exposing the dumb side of discord.
Discord probably could put the "Join servers for you" permission behind some kind of manual verification wall like its Message Content Intent permission.
Of course, previously verified bots could still be stolen, but limiting this permission to a significantly lower number of bots will reduce its abuse to some extent.
removing the join for seems to be the best option. In fact I don't know how it could be useful. If you want to join a server you definitively have your word to say in the process.
Factually this could end to some extra steps option like :
Establishing some manuals autorisations on the account like having a section with check/unchek to accept or not this option for any proposition. By the way a bot/application can ask me if I want to authorize it, but if I uncheck, by default it'll be unauthorized. It's the first modification to add. That lead to also add the possibility to edit the right you give to an application. When it display the panel with all access asked, you need to be able to uncheck that you don't want to have.

I don't think they need to remove the join server intent right away but put it behind an extra verification wall just like tye message intent now is and basicly reduce the amount of bots that can use this drastically
I feel like if a certain amount of people get added to a server it should trigger an automatic manual review.
"you can get sent to a page filled with adds!" *Gets a add as soon as I hear that sentence*
4:17 can i get a copy and paste for that?
Trying to correct discord comments demostrates your own insecurities. When people write comments, grammar/spelling are not incredibly important to them, Instead, they focus on their message or point, Trying to point but grammar mistakes, while you clearly haven't passed 5th grade, is pretty entertaining for me. While I'm all for people using the correct forms of words, calling them out doesn't demonstrate intelligence, but rather shows the lack of purpose you have in your own life. You spend time on discord correcting people's grammar for no reason, other than attempting to fill the void left behind from the lack of attention you get. I would suggest debating people with ideas and counter-arguments, rather than pointing out trivial mistakes that have no effect on the overall message that the person is stating.
@@notcrystalsanimations thanks a lot
@@notcrystalsanimations you forgot the 🤓
That brain scan at 7:14 has a tumor in it
Yes, Discord should definitely just remove "Join servers for you" and also remove "direct message members" mainly because both are constantly being abused by scammers.
The "DM members" one can be important though because it allows you to actually interact with some (non-scam) bots via DM.
The Join Servers for You is also important for many Patreon-UA-cam-Twitch users in the form of patreon/member only Discord. Many use it as a form of allowing their subs the opportunity to join the creator, others use it as like a tuition fee for classrooms like artists.
I say Discord needs to have a verify feature that you want to join the server the bot is inviting you in. You're given yes and no, and below no is an option to "don't ask me again for this server" so that the bot can no longer try to get you to join.

There is a solution - make it a privileged scope that requires approval from discord. There's already privileged intents, so it shouldn't be too hard to implement.
@dawn I'm talking about a full-on whitelist: the scope cannot be used whatsoever until you submit a ticket and are approved by discord, similar to the messages.read and the rpc[.**] scopes.
@@pandapip1 problem is, the Discord Developers that approve bots already have a lot on their plate, adding another one wouldn't solve the issue.
@@SquidScopes It depends on what you define as the problem. If the problem is malicious use of guilds.join, then requiring approval from Discord is a perfectly acceptable solution. If the problem is balancing the malicious use of guilds.join with the work of Discord's staff, then I'd still argue this is a good option. Why? Because there are so few use cases for guilds.join. It would amount to probably at most 10 requests per day.
the thing is that important discord apps like patreon integration need the join servers for you scope so they can get you in the server when someone subscribes to your tier and proceed to give you a role if that’s set-up. but yeah I agree that they could consider removing that scope or at least require a unique verification for that scope
No they don't need that permission in order to give you a role. I manually revoked the specific "join server" permission, and it will still give me a role if I manually join the server via an invite link.
If I remember correctly I got stuck in one of these loopholes myself, I provided information of all the staff memebers of the discord, and anything related to the administrators and the bots and last I heard I haven't been automatically pulled into the server since
To fix this:
-Go to user settings
-Go to authorized Applications
-Remove any applications ( bots) that have the option "Joins servers for you"
After that, leave the server. This should prevent the server to pop up again. Besides joining servers on your account, I believe whatever else these bots can do are harmless.
Funny, how i got the exact same message at 0:15 sometime ago, avoided a troublesome pest huh.
I was added into one of these servers, so i just went to the rules channel and did everything they told me not to do. Safe to say I was perma banned from that server soon enough.
Yeah that's the polite thing to do. You didn't wanna be there and they put you there, tit for tat. If people don't want people being assholes they won't force you into a server because the server is so shitty and full of assholes they HAVE to force joins coz no on would join of their own free will.
