PSA: Don’t Send this Photo on Discord!

  • There is an ILLEGAL photo that is floating around that if you send it on Discord, YOU WILL GET BANNED. Doesn't matter if it's in DMs or in a Discord server.
This is not some bogus hoax or clickbait garbage, you will get banned. To try to figure out what's going on, I sent the image in an empty Discord server. I tested this on an alt account (and I got banned in 72 seconds, I am the discord ban speedrun champ). But why did I get banned, is the image anything bad? From the surface it's just a normal photo...
Also big big big warning, do not try to send or download this image if you do stumble upon the original. As you will see, this is not an image you want to have lying around.

Warning: The original photo is part of an illegal video. Do not share it and do not ask for information to find it.
The photoshopped photo of ryback eating popcorn will not get you banned. I just replaced the original bad photo with a more lighthearted photo to ensure UA-cam doesn't get mad at me and people don't get in trouble for screenshotting the video.
Finally, half of yall need to think before you do something. There's a reason why the photo gets you banned. There's a reason why tons of crap is censored out.

When ntts brought out the DNA and hash explanation, I expected this to be a hash collision - an extremely rare event where two different images produce the exact same hash. So a cheese pizza and a cat image for some reason both get turns into hash "1234", and since the pizza database contains only the "1234", if you upload the cat image you mistakenly get banned. Well I was wrong. God damn.

I saw the GIF this photo originated from. Someone sent it on a discord server about two years ago, and although I banned him I still remember how it went. It doesn't "turn into CP", as in someone abusing the kid. It just shows the kid's brothers raiding his room while naked, jumping around. It's still CP, of course, and still unacceptable, but at least it's a stupid prank they played on him rather than something worse. So everyone can relax about the child's integrity.

I guessed it was a CP detection related thing from the get go.
I get why they are so aggressive about bans and reports, but I'm surprised they would check for individual video frames that themselves don't contain CP. With hindsight it's clear that this can be abused to trick people into getting themselves banned and maybe even clogging the system with false reports against innocent users. Hopefully Discord and other services continue to adjust these systems to ensure innocent users don't get tricked into bans while not compromising the detection capabilities against real criminals.

Its not illegal nor are you in any risk to be jailed for seeing or sharing the image because the image doesn't contain CP, the law doesn't work like an AI does. If the material is from an illegal film but said Material is from a section of the film not containing CP then it is not illegal to share. Imagine going to prison because you sent someone an image of a couch just because its from a film where someone is r*ped on said coach. While weird and potentially a sign this person may have actual CP in their position, the screenshot itself is not illegal to own or send anyone because it doesn't show or contain illicit material

Yeah, there's no way you could actually be convicted of a crime for this, because sending that particular photo itself is not actually illegal in any way. However, that doesn't mean that you wouldn't be _investigated_ for the crime, which in itself is probably not going to be that fun, and with many of these systems, you can still be branded a predator in many other ways even if you never actually did anything illegal, just because you were submitted to the database at all.
So no, you won't be going to jail if you post this image, but that still doesn't mean you want to do it anyway, for various other reasons.
As for why they would check for frames from portions of the video that don't actually contain CP, that is almost certainly because they didn't want to have to have human viewers watching through every CP video to identify which portions actually have CP and which don't, which is somewhat understandable. IMHO, the big issue here seems to be that they have combined the hashes for both still images and movie frames into the same single database, which will obviously inherently include many false positive image matches, which apparently nobody even considered. This is particularly problematic because they are almost certainly using AI-based hashing algorithms, which means other images that look _similar enough_ to any of those false-positive frames will probably also be falsely categorized as CP (which means theoretically the image you post doesn't even have to be from an actual CP video, it could just _look like_ a frame from some CP video somewhere (that you've never even seen)).

Nobody on law enforcement watched 2 full hours of no-no stuff (hopefully), so it's unlikely someone would notice.

It overall brings into question the source of the image you sent. I'm curious as to what the retroactive tools would do as to if it'd be the same or not because in general, it HAS to be a full frame of one of those videos before it's flagged as such. I highly doubt that a cool artwork you find online would ever lead to such a thing since it's not from such a video.
Although... It makes me at least somewhat worried about the possibility of frames of the actual videos purposely including these cases of innocent artwork and/or popular images in order to 'fight back' against the hashing algorithm... I wonder what sort of checks they do alongside with the hashing to help prevent this because I imagine it'd be abused otherwise

All platforms are legally required to inform you when their terms of use update, and they do. Discord is no exception.
Also, this is an incredibly narrow automated system, only banning media that is an EXACT match. Hashes aren't like tags of an image. Hash functions receive data and transform it into a fixed-size value that cannot be reversed. If you change a single byte or pixel from an image, the resulting number is completely different. Also, there can be colision cases where more than one image (in this case, it could be any data) result in the same hash. So it doesn't completely identify images. Apparently PhotoDNA has yet to confirm if there are collisions

    • @MagicGonads
      @MagicGonads 6 місяців тому +2

These are visual hashes, not data hashes, so artifacts do not change the hash
basically it's like a compression algorithm runs first, then it gets hashed
that compression algorithm *intentionally* has a lot of collisions so it matches similar pictures to avoid being worked around
but the consequence of this is... there are a lot of collisions (and there's no way to be sure those collisions are all genuine)

Interesting, I thought of the hash thing at the beginning, but I thought it would be a completely different story since the description of the picture sounded innocent enough. These video hashes work differently by design tho, since they need to be able to still reliably detect illicit material even if it's cropped, rotated, mirrored, etc. etc. But the chance of 2 different images having the same sha2 or sha3 hash for example is 0. At least if you keep trying to generate images with a super computer from now until the end of proton decay. Your description of a hash is wrong; not that it’s super important but still. A hash is a one way deterministic mathematical function that essentially converts numbers/data into other numbers. Ex: images -> numbers, text -> numbers, numbers -> numbers. A hash doesn’t describe anything, the thumbprint is a good analogy. It just creates a unique and deterministic (repeatable) output from inputs. So if you hash images, you get a numerical output, store that output, and in the future you can compare hashes of other images against that. If you get a match, then you know with a very high degree of certainty that you’ve already hashed that image before. In this case, if you get a match against your stored hashes, then it’s illegal material.

If the image contains no abuse material in the still itself, you can't be prosecuted. The full source video doesn't matter if you don't possess it, especially not if the metadata shows the image was copied from a non-illegal clearnet source. Lawyers are way smarter than AIs, and this isn't even hard for a public defender to tackle. In fact, a judge would likely throw the case out.
Let's take a different example. It's illegal to publicly display porn as it is public indecency. If I were to project the corny, non-explicit opening of a porno on public but shut it off before any sex/nudity, could I be prosecuted for it? No. I played the part of the porno that doesn't have porn. The displayed material itself, not the totality of the source, is what is factored. Same goes for this Discord image. A website AI is not the law.
Not only are you ABSOLUTELY innocent until proven guilty in the US, you should NEVER listen to anyone who says you aren't. Everyone has that same right no matter the crime.

your explanation of image hashing was very to the point, as someone who deals with discord degens every day and had to explain hashing, so thank you I'm going to clip this next time I need to explain it out.
    really
    thank you!

I got banned bcuz of an image that was tagged, i tried to appeal, and they just gave the generic reply from the bot without taking a look at my case, completely ignoring everything.

The possibility of people getting criminal charges for sharing that photo is ridiculous. Yes, it's a still frame from a video containing CSAM, but that still frame contains no CSAM on its own. You are *not* distributing CSAM if you can't look at the image and identify where exactly it contains child abuse, which is exactly what happened with these Discord users.
This is the legal equivalent of SCP-096 coming to kill a guy because one pixel of a photo he took of a countryside had its face in it.

Actual authorities would have to look at individual cases, the moment they receive thousands of reports with the same fucking pic from people that have never been flagged down for something like this it's gonna raise suspicion so they likely wont get prosecuted and so many false positives is also gonna make it hard for actual p3dos to be arrested, just don't distribute things that you don't know what they are.

What scares me is the amount of people in this very comment section that have the nerve to pretend that sending the image itself is equivalent in every conceivable way to sending someone CSAM. All this does is downplay what that crap actually is and confuse people. It's utterly deranged.
Plus it's a slippery slope, too.
By their asinine logic someone could edit a video where illegal content plays right after a video of some random videogame gameplay clips or something, and it would therefore make the gameplay illegal to share by extension and make you a pdf for having only the gameplay part on your computer?? It's completely insane to me how people fail to see how this isn't how it works.
Thank you for actually saying this.

I'm kinda surprised you didn't use Discords CSAM, as it's in the video and it's pretty UA-cam Safe. Also thanks for putting this out there, as clearly the X poster wants to either: Screw with people, or to pollute Discords reporting of [That photo | just in general]
