Dream's speedrun cheating saga has certainly stirred up a lot of controversy over the past several months. Now that he admitted to cheating (though unintentionally), it looks like things might finally settle down. But looking back on the whole event, who's more to blame? Is it Dream himself or was it the Minecraft speedrun mods? Despite scientific papers, an astrophysicist's involvement and intense back-and-forth allegations, to this day the whole thing remains full of intrigue.

If anything, DREAM is also at fault because there were death threats from his stans too. I’ll admit that both sides had a contribution for the better and for the worse, but Dream could of stopped this if he thought, “what if I really was hacking?” earlier on. i'm assuming he means one video that the mods put out.... it was v e r y passive aggressive, just like dream's vid on dreamxd in response.
They never really had to make videos about it. It's not really a thing as far as I'm aware. If somebody's run gets removed, usually you can just remove that one run in question (I could be mistaken on that note), and tell the runner why. Sure, dream tweeted about it, but realistically he didn't name any names and the whole issue would've gone away a lot faster if that was the end of it. They posted a video, and then there was a target for the hate. Geosquares channel isn't really FOR explaining why speedruns are removed, it was done for views. They tried justifying it with "if we explain why we did it we thought we wouldn't get hate", but I think everybody's seen enough internet drama to know that's not how it works. The less back and forth there is the less drama there is. I'm not saying that it's all geosquares or the mods fault, but even posting that video was a bad call, and a poor reaction to a tweet about it.

I Agree
When Russia was caught cheating in the Olympics, they were stripped of the ability to use their name, flag, and uniforms for *8 years*. Cheating in competition is the lowest of the low, and then spending half a year belating the people who were in the right, and still claiming you cheated "accidentally" while victimizing yourself is the worst way to handle it. Just apologize dude. I will never see Dream in the same light, and I do not want to support his content in the slightest. I hope the speedrun moderators don't get harassed like this in the future. I think Dream shouldn't be allowed to speedrun for a noticeable period of time, and a sincere apology is required.
Big agree. Tho in this case we cant stop someone from literally actually playing the game in a speedrunning manner, so instead we should just ban him from anything spedrun related that is official to Minecraft.
Also of note, I hate the stans going "Lol its just a block game why you so pressed" when this came out. Any cheating in any competition is taken seriously because the community around it is obviously serious about it, but these children dont have the concept of things being important to people even if they themselves dont find it important..
..Which is funny because those same people were also the same ones shouting that he didnt cheat and harassing those who said otherwise lmao
At least he apologized
I kind of disagree. We don't know for sure that how it happened isn't how he said it did. I think freaking out in that situation and trying desperately to hold onto what you'd spent years building is a realistic reaction. I've seen people get canceled and their lives ruined over less. He did do screwed up things, and he should not have done them. He definitely has a lot of growing to do and hopefully he can learn from this if he's going to continue being a content creator.
But I think it's really presumptuous to listen to someone's feelings/motivations and just go "no, you're wrong". Or to listen to someone's apology and go "no, that wasn't sincere enough. You didn't apologize hard enough. Do it again," when maybe they really did pour their feelings into that. I'm not a stan, never was, and I lost some respect for him when I realized he did cheat. But I don't think random people get to decide whether or not someone was being genuine or not about their feelings. Like, sometimes you KNOW, but not liking someone isn't somehow you KNOW that. Like, imagine your biggest mistake, your biggest screw up, that you did because you were scared or stupid or mean or whatever. And when you went to apologize, sincerely, they just told you "No, you're lying. You're not sorry. Do it again, or go screw yourself." Like, it's just f-ed up.
That being said, he did cheat in the end. So yeah, banning him from the speedrunning leaderboard for a while or whatever would be a decent punishment. I'm not into speedrunning so I don't know the protocol for situations like that. And before anyone calls me a stan or a simp or whatever, is it really so wrong to want to give someone the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were telling the truth about *their* emotions? Is it so wrong to try to be considerate that maybe they did just screw up really badly and aren't an awful person? I like to live by the belief that "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", and in that situation, I don't know if I would've reacted much better, so I'm not going to throw any stones. Especially when he already apologized. There's no way to know he wasn't being genuine, and if he really was, then he's already learned his lesson. There's no reason to keep kicking the dead horse.
Can confirm, Astro Boy is way more intense than any boy.

How are the mods at bias here? Speedrunning has rules, this is like using steroids in the Olympics, its illegal and come on now, Dream cheated intentionally, he had plenty of time to own up anyways. The best move would be to have to come clean as soon as the statistics were discovered.
Agreed, frankly, if there is any sort of foul play from the moderators, that would be an entirely separate problem to examine and look at, as is the way the dream fans behave. Dream cheated, plain and simple, to put the moderators in with this argument is a bad case of muddying the waters, and utilizing the "Whataboutism" tactic.
If I'm blunt, Dream needs to learn a lesson from this event, that deception and trying to hide the truth is going to backfire. Further, I'd seriously wish he would confront his more zealous fans, and shut down the hostility they have towards anyone who is anything less than fawning over him. Fans are tricky, but the cult-like behaviour is a dangerous force that malicious and narsicistic folks could only dream of using as a weapon.

Glad so many of the comments are pointing out how ridiculous it is to put the blame on the moderators here. They did their job and they did it well. The run was cheated, they removed it. They tried dealing with it privately, dream made it public, they then responded to it publicly. It’s just such a weird take saying they were at fault in anyway given the timeline of events as well as the fact that he undeniably cheated his run. I feel you're giving Dream and his """""""Astrophysicist""""""" way too much credit. The mods did an excellent (if overly wordy) job of proving, unequivocally, that Dream did cheat. It was not a "He said, She said". Perhaps to people who didn't either read the papers or the responses or breakdowns of the papers, or simply didn't understand any of it; but the overwhelming consensus, at least in the videos I watched, was that the mods are right, Dream cheated. @Standupmaths did an excellent (if not the best) job of breaking all the math down.
As far as I can tell, the only way Dream is coming out of this, is as an immature idiot.
there were also trillions of simulations done that lined up with the mods math
The reason a lot of people even myself gave dream benefit of the doubt is because the mod who came out and made a call out video did it for clout rather than keeping it quiet seeing as dream saw it was rejected and moved on and the mod made a video about just purely for clout. That’s why I gave him the benefit of the doubt because I was under the impression the mods were extremely biased.
All dream had to say to refute the mods’ math was “they’re using unfair stats that are targeted against me in a non bias way” and some other half baked claims.
@@Jechew As illustrated in the mods' paper and in this video: ua-cam.com/video/8Ko3TdPy0TU/v-deo.html , no matter how you flip the numbers, it is not reasonable that Dream could ever been as lucky as he was. The math is unequivocal; Irrespective of Dream's confession, we can be sure he cheated.
I remember watching a video where someone explained it and even said the numbers were actually positively biased. I mean it makes sense to show that even with the best luck and stats he couldn't have done it so he had to have cheated

The idea that I wouldn't note these extras? The rest in an exploration of events shown in a different light giving Dream the benefit of the doubt in all situations. Which is again, plausible.
I was 'Maybe' before and 'Maybe' after watching that vid. It's well put together, it explores possibilities most YTers don't but it isn't conclusive.
Ultimately it would be up to the mods though and their belief, and I don't blame people for not taking others at their word alone with no other evidence available - with any and all evidence (the plugin itself, chat logs, folder or -anything- solid) all being unavailable.
Doping is strict liability, in cases it was unknowing consumed the ban on participation can be reduced to a few years.
I am going to say it, this guy said things like "both sides reacted poorly", "whose fault was it? " just because he didn't wanted dream stans to cancel him cuz his toxic stans would cancel everyone else except the original wrong doer
The mods were absolutely, without a doubt, right here. They did what they had to do.
Also, since he uses mods and stuff for speedruns, does it also mean that he uses it for manhunts too ?
Andrei, the biggest reason is apology is so sus is because of how minecraft mods work; different "versions" of the installation need to be made, for example with Dream the 1.16 version would be separate from the modded "manhunt pearl trade increasing" version. This implies that he loaded the different version *6 different times* for each stream "unknowingly", yet wouldn't he be able to see that he's loading the wrong version? Why would he load the exact same version several times without even noticing the pearl trade increase. In addition, this just came to me so prob some holes in this, he mentioned in a manhunt "this is why I cheated" as a joke (not saying that is his admission) and yet if the mod provided boosted trades, what exactly was he complaining about in his manhunt video which the mod was specifically made for?
Yeah, wait, that's actually very true... If that mod was made to boost drop rates in a manhunt video, why was he complaining about drop rates in a manhunt video when the mod should do that :/ Seems sus
very sus
Even with the percentage at 15% instead of the usual 4/7%, you can still get bad luck
The joke was minecraft had nerfed pearl trades because he had cheated and had been really lucky with trades. He made this joke because he was getting unlucky with trades in the manhunt.
He doesn't really need to change much actually. He just stays on the same version, 1.16.

@@Corridor3000 he had 5 MONTHS worth of time to check xD
The issue is how Minecraft works. Dream has consistently changed versions, in fact, either the day after Dream sent that speedrun, or the day after he offered the mods his mod folder, there’s conflicting information there, he changed to 1.15. This meant the mods that he had in the folder wouldn’t work, so he had to delete the mod folder, or move the mods around, which, given that he also uses the mod developer for the mods that appear in his challenge videos, and on his friends channels, the amount of changes to be done to the folder at the time, especially since he was doing his manhunts about 1 version behind, 2 versions behind after 1.16 came out, you can see how the confusion started. On top of that, according to Karl Jobst, who is making a video of his own, the mod that Dream mentioned did more than simply increase drop rates, it also does what sodium does, makes the game run better. There’s better launching time, less particles, boosted framerate, and other quality of life changes that make the video quality better.
Given that the mod was labeled “Dream’s Recording Mod” you wouldn’t think that pearl and rod rates would be boosted as well.

dream stans saying "oh its just a block game u dont have to hate him" but when techno won against dream the stans were wishing death on techno
True
What’s ironic is that they were threatening peoples lives over the so called “block game”
Didn’t they try to dox him?
That's what I hate about Dream stans, they are all bunch of hypocrites
Dream ruined minecraft and the minecraft community
This is just so wrong lol, apparently the mods can’t do their job anymore. The video was made to reduce the harassment they were gonna receive after removing his runs from the leader board. Dream is the only one who was in the wrong here.
the way he denied the cheating for a long time, offended other people who were just did their job just because they were saying something that wasn't good about him, and after all that drama he admitted, but he still deflected his blame. I can't see how or whu his fans still defend him.
Dream was 100% in the wrong here. The mods did what their job is to do, look at the evidence and decide if Dream's run was legitimate.
Dream's response video was very manipulative, he spent a lot of time talking about how badly the mods messed, and how he had no reason to cheat as a UA-camr.
He abused his following and had his stans send large amounts of hate to people who argued against him. Even now that he finally did admit he was cheating, he had the nerve to say it was accidental, rather than apologizing to the mods or to the 100s of legitimate speedrunners he disregarded when he uploaded his run to a competetive speedrunning website.
Agreed but he didn't send anybody to hate on purpose though
No, Dream did handle it well. The moderators were the ones who sent the cancel culture mob to Dream and that’s why incels like you are now attacking him mindlessly.
@@lolgenitor7065 ah yes, even when Dream himself admits to not handling it well in his apology. yeah okay.

This video is weird and extremely bias. Dream is 100% at fault here. The moderators are just doing what they are supposed to do. Of course they would point out this, he’s a really big, influential UA-camr with a big platform. He’s not just some random idiot cheating. The fact that dream lied for months, getting tons of innocent people hate by tricking his impressionable stans into believing him is ridiculous. If he really did “accidentally” cheat, he should’ve said it from the start and been more careful when doing speedruns.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
I think he’s actually trying to be unbiased so he doesn’t get curbstomped by either side
@@LaserDawg He's being biased towards Dream, everyone with half a braincell or more knows that Dream is a manipulative sociopath who's always been at fault and is never right.
You could look at a turd and it would tell you better information but I guess I can't say that since Dream himself is a huge turd.
@chding zuure There is no Dream Hater or Anti, it's a stupid name Dream stans invented to stand up for the billion Dream stans.
It has to be bias, the creator cannot make it look like he’s against dream. He’ll get cancelled and doxxed.
They didn't remove his record because he's famous. They removed it because he clearly cheated. The whole idea that they did this because of bias just shows that famous people can get away with anything.
In one of the most infamous clips of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas speedrunning, a speedrunner pulled off accidentally putting in a cheat code to spawn a helicopter. He managed to press the exact buttons needed for the cheat code. This is a large breaking of the rules. It also ruined hid chance of making a world record run.
It was confirmed that it was an accident. The speedrunner never made a claim that he did not do it. The main point of this is that he did not fight to the death to say his run was legitimate.
Dream, even if he done it by complete accident, still cheated. The speedrun is illegitimate and should not count. He certainly should not have acted the way he did, because it made him look all the way more guilty.
no accident cannot be deemed as cheating in my book atleast
@@faradayaa5442 "I accidentally had my cheating mod on, the moderators asked me for my mods folder and I accidentally deleted my cheating mod from my folder before sending it to the mods, oops sorry its not cheating just an accident"

If you were to look further than whatever Reddit tells you, you’d know that Dream isn’t at fault here. Cancel culture is evil and defending it is wrong.
@@lolgenitor7065 Theres a difference between cancelling someone because you don't like them, and calling them out for cheating or doing something wrong. Please learn the difference.
