How To Install a Line Output Converter (LOC) To Any Car (Simple) - Aftermarket Sub To Factory Radio

  • Here is my detailed breakdown on how to install a line output converter into a car with a factory radio. This installation is done in my 2017 honda civic hatchback. You can follow this guide if you are installing the line output converter to the rear speakers or to the car's wiring harness.
Make sure to splice the wires like shown and match the cables from the LOC to your specific car. I prefer the method of installing on the wiring harness because you don't need to run the cables anywhere else, making it an easier installation.

The adhesive on the tape will heat up overtime... the adhesive will also collect dust that will become conductive and not always but likely cause a short. Also, if that is the way you prefer to splice the wires then wire nuts will save you a little work.

I personally would fine tune the level knobs while hearing whatever speakers/sub(s) are connected to your amp at 50-75% head unit volume. Without doing this you might be cheating your amp out of full capability(too low) or allowing possible distortion into your sound(too high).

Probably too late of a response.
I was able to put two amps in my car; one for the highs and one for the sub. I had the LC2i by audio control. Excellent converter. Also, it’s an active converter so it gets nice clean full-power signal because it’s connected with a 12v connection. The LC2i has 2 sets of outputs. One for the low (sub) and one for the highs. Only issue is that you won’t have fade capability.

The "Kicker" brand line output converter is worth every penny as it doesn't have a power wire. It gets the power from the speaker wire connection. Nor does it have a "Gain" knob, adjusting automatically to your system. It also offers one of "the best" low noise/distortion signals to your amp. Seen it tested.

So you only need a line output converter if you are installing an aftermarket amp or sub? My car has a stock radio with a sub and I bought this converter because I thought I would need it, but I guess I don’t? I’m still trying to wire in my new aftermarket radio but I don’t have an amp and the only sub I have is the stock one..

Hey man, nice video. I think you should consider soldering your cable connections. It makes them much more durable and last longer. I do have one question, I have a 17 Civic lx-p, is it possible to install a replacement head unit ? My biggest concern is that alot of the vehicle controls like TPMS reset and AC controls are all via the head unit. I don't know if any manufacturers support those things. Great video though!

" a lot"....of people use this incorrectly. First of all, soldering wires does give you a great connection. But in a car you never use solder. Because cars move and vibrate. Especially when you add bass. So you are adding a weak point to your flexible wires. Notice cars never come this way from anyone. Ever.
I'll try to explain. Have you ever soldered a wire? Notice the hard section after you bend it? That becomes a weak point and over time it will break. Becoming a fire hazard. There's heat shrink to protect it but still. It will break and become an open circuit. So either you don't have a working unit or you just lose your ride to a fire.
Crimp connectors have been proven over years and years. You do it right it will last for a very long time. You can also use heat shrink on crimped connections. I would recommend that. Much cleaner.

@@PFab i would say it depends on how well you solder. if im coating both wires completely with a light solder then its solid and aint never coming loose shrink wrap on top of that. connecters are good but they fail plenty which is why more people prefer to solder. it may be better for inside the vehicle but solder is far better outside than connectors

@@baggedtuned8569 I have taken an electronic class in college. Not saying I'm the best but I did get an A- in it. And that was many years ago. Mainly for soldering connections and many types of them. The strongest was the twisted version where the wires were coated first then twisted into each other and then soldered again together. So I have a bit of a background. My concern was the wire itself. Thera a solid section where the wire is soldered together and there a section the wire ends and is back to strans. If you bend the wire back and forth enough, over time it will break at that point. Making the soldier point useless. Even though that will most likely never fail the stranded section will fail.

@@baggedtuned8569 I didn't think about that part but yes you are correct. Shrink wrap will definitely be supportive. I could see that being the best option.

I was wondering if you could show the specific connections you made for the LOC to the wiring harness. I have a 2016 EX-T civic and I want follow that exact patter. If you could not show the wires could you make a diagram. (Example: RED to YELLOW, WHITE to GREEN) I’m not very familiar with stereo connections.
