    I'm a firm believer that time blocking and a rigid calendar is somewhat harmful for most people's long term success. However like Ray Dalio said "Principles are ways of successfully dealing with reality to get what you want out of life." So I gathered some of my early learning from 2018 to today and summarized them in 7 principles that enabled me to better manage my time, energy and attention.
    BTW, I'm very sorry to have mis-pronounced Tim Pychyl's name, big fan of his work, but apparently I have never heard his podcast where people actually spoke his name :D.
    Let me know if there's anything I missed or any suggestion to further improve my video in the future. Any comment is welcomed and I try to reply to every single one in time. As always, thanks for stoping by, Cheer :)

      @@adriennemaerealingo8799 Thanks for the comment! I agree chores can kill productivity, my wife and I shared it always and there’re lots of tricks to do it efficiently… that’s said , the only reason I didn’t mention it was because it’s probably not the most significant part of time management as a topic, I’m also not sure people will be interested in watching “how to get my housework done in 30min…”
      And yes eventually we did get a nanny, it’s like outsourcing any repetitive tasks, my wife and my time are better off doing other things. But thanks for reminding me, she’s definitely a big part in all this!

      @@kevzwang house chores and maintenance are most definitely a HUGE time sucker for most people, outsourcing house works for thiings that now break regularly as everything is made so cheap and hiring people to do the work is insanely expensive. Is very significant and most time management recommendations never address this. If you are a single parent on top of that or like it seems for the majoriy of moms a partner that contributes nothing to the house and child related tasks. It becomes almost impossible to have free time and especially free time where you have physical ot mental energy left. Videos on the topic are HIGHLY needed.

      Please take the advice of the two commenters before me. I understand if you don't believe your core audience would be interested in such a topic, however, not addressing home management alienates potential viewers as they assume the UA-camr doesn't "get it" or is ignoring crucial aspects of real life.
      If you believe that segment of the audience is miniscule, so be it. I typically find tidbits that I can apply from anyone.

    I feel like right at this time, this moment, this period of my life, this is the video I needed. I feel like now I can leave the internet and go live and actually manage my live correctly. I have an obsession with self-improvement, but not for the sake self-improvement, I want to be better, the achieve meaningful things. Everything said in this video feels like I already knew deep inside, but just could not connect them. THANK YOU so much for this video. The amount of time end effort you spent struggling to figure these things out, the time spent making the video, it was all worth it a 1000x.

    I appreciate this thank you, I see some comments about ADHD here but as someone who has ADHD (ADD) I do find this incredibly helpful. Not being bound by specific calendars but managing your guiding principles is a great way to look at this. A lot of what you described here is managing dopamine. I especially liked the idea of: you’re procrastinating find a way to reward (dopamine) yourself while you do the task. That’s a big one, and really the most effective when I’m struggling. Usually people fail to illustrate how to ‘reward’ yourself effectively but I liked how you illustrated it (taxes in the park, snacks during the work not as a reward after full completion).

    On the topic of energy and focus in the morning or after a snack. Without having read the cited studies I would hazard a guess the participant were all on the standard american diet (SAD) which is very high in carbohydrats that spike blood sugar levels which then crash and give the feeling of tiredness and being irritable until it's brought back up by more carbs (and then crash again and so on)
    (The tiredness can be masked by caffeine intake)
    There are diets which try to keep energy levels more even for the whole day. Worth looking into especially for people with (pre) type-2-diabetes, brain fog, memory issues and lots of other issues.
    Just food for thought.

    • @kevzwang
      @kevzwang  3 місяці тому

      Very valid point, I would assume not all studies were conducted in environments where parameters like food intake, were controlled, given the subjects involved were mostly individuals who has jobs or sometimes very successful people... I think it's safe to say, we should take the result with grain of salt...
      That said, even the evidence may be a bit shaky, I personally choose to believe the conclusions I mentioned in this video because... well it was my personal experience. Even during a caffeine free few months in the past, I find my energy level throughout the day stays consistent with or without coffee, which leads me to believe biology plays more or less a big part here.
      But yes, I hope I thought about this before I made the video, thanks for the comment!

    Would be interesting to hear more about the parenting vs non work goals time dynamic. Like I need to keep up on yard work, laundry, cooking, cleaning, remodling the house, all while having 2 children under 4 to help look out for. I work 50 hours a week with an hour of commuting time each day monday thru friday, so im struggling lol

    • @kevzwang

      Thanks for the feedback! I got a quite a few comments echoing this request. Definitely didn't expect people would be interested in the non-work side of things.
      But me and my wife struggled a lot too before finally decided to get domestic help. It's not for everybody but after me and my wife each got a surgery it just became a must. My boys are 3 and 5 now so our situation is quite similar.
      There are principles I think lessen the burden before we hired a nanny that I think would help folks like us, given the amount of request on this I will definitely make a video in the future to talk about it. Again thanks for the comment!

      Thanks for the comment! Let me think about whether I should make a video to talk about it. Because my method isn't really popular amongst new youtubers, I'm cautious in advising people on that since I'm just starting as well.
      But since you asked, here's some my key take away after 6 month:
      1. Always make the best video you can make, but don't expect result until your best effort is even better than the ones you benchmarks against (aka your competitors). To do this you will need to improve your writing skills, shooting skills, editing skill, in this order, writing is by far more important than everything else.
      2. If you have a great personality, Act, perform and exaggerate, camera appearance matters a lot more than I originally think. If you don't you need to find your own unique style of presenting informations, it will grow slower but you will eventually get there.
      3. You can't over complicated things, people are not here for lecture.
      4. spend a lot of time watching every "how to grow on youtube" video you can find, and then spend 2X that time internalize what you just heard, this is more important than learning from anecdote success story, you need your own system.
      5. if you do all the above, you should be around my level and face the same problem that I face right now - I can produce good content but WAY TOO SLOWLY. At which point I think you need an editors.
      Hope that helps, thanks for the comment!~

      What usually works for me is set a mental priority to the one thing over all the rest. That’s doesn’t mean you don’t do the rest of them, it means you allocate more effort in that one thing and say NO a lot for all the rest… (I.e all the date night I sacrificed because I had to work a side hustle to fund my business school…).

    Something nobody talks about. Is people with ADHD. Specifically ADD. The ADD brain is totally different than the average brain. Sadly, most productivity systems are made fore the neurotypical brain.

      I have ADHD and the only thing that helps me is setting timers

    • @CodeBrewCS
      @CodeBrewCS 2 місяці тому +3

      Hey man, I have ADD (I dont take meds and never have) and it was a fucking struggle figuring all this out on my own.
      Heres what helped me (even though i think with ADD you have to figure out your own route):
      1. Keeping my space clean. I realized that I needed to always keep my space clean, tidying up every day and never letting it get to the point of “messy” because when you have ADHD, all that mess will overwhelm you and you will keep ignoring it every time you wake up which will make you mad every single day
      2. Have one thing that grounds you every day. For me it was fixing my bed. I knew that as long as i fixed my bed every single day, then i was still sane and in a good place. And that made it so that if i EVER didn’t fix my bed, it would be a strong reminder to reassess myself.
      3. Always write things down on a todo list. Your brain gets distracted your brain forgets and youre not rich enough to have a personal assistant so you are your own personal assistant. That means that when youre doing tasks you dont want empty space that allows your brain to deviate from your tasks. So make a todo list which will always show you what you need to do without you having to think about it.
      These things helped me a ton. But again you will go through your own journey and figure yourself out. You just really have to WANT to change. Sometimes what will make you WANT to change wont be nice. So change before it happens

    i think that the only glass ball is health, you lose it u lose everything

    • @magicalnoodles
      @magicalnoodles 3 місяці тому

      Not really. Based on the principles mentioned in the video (family, health, friends and integrity), all of them are glass.
      If you do something that would destroy the family (cheating, ignoring communication, needs and wants, etc.), then the damage is permanent.
      For health, I agree with you. Losing your health means losing most of your life and opportunities.
      If you ignore your friends or just stop communicating with them for whatever reason, you will eventually lose them as friends permanently. You can always find new friends, but it's a lot more time demanding and difficult than just maintaining the relationships that already exist.
      Integrity is absolutely a glass ball. If you let loose on your integrity even once, then doing it a second time is so much easier. This can easily make a cycle where you will more often think "if I do this thing, then I get so many short term benefits, even if it goes against my compass". And so, your integrity will only get weaker and weaker over time. You can't recover this.

    Shock how busy men are still verenated for living like he doesnt have a family. I hope the wife gets the same credit. t's not time management. He was this busy while child is in their growing period. I wonder if successful men could do the same effort for house chores as their women does.
    I will be more impress if he shared how he become a reliable father and husband while doing all of that. Or if you have a Nanny that helped him

    • @kevzwang
      @kevzwang  3 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for the comment! Although there’s nothing impressive about what I did ( the whole point of this video is everyone can do it too), I agree chores can kill productivity, my wife and I shared it always and there’re lots of tricks to do it efficiently… that’s said , the only reason I didn’t mention it was because it’s probably not the most significant part of time management as a topic, I’m also not sure people will be interested in watching “how to get my housework done in 30min…”
      And yes eventually we did get a nanny, it’s like outsourcing any repetitive tasks, my wife and my time are better off doing other things. But thanks for reminding me, she’s definitely a big part in all this!

    • @WebDeva7
      @WebDeva7 3 місяці тому +1

      @@kevzwangme! I WOULD be interested in how you got your housework done in 30 min. I want to know how you balanced being a husband, father, friend, employee and entrepreneur in the early days BEFORE you got domestic help. You’d be surprised what people are actually interested in. Men frequently talk about productivity but they don’t talk about balance…and society praises them for that. Enforcing the conclusion that no one wants to see you talk about housework.

    • @kevzwang
      @kevzwang  3 місяці тому +5

      @@WebDeva7 Wow thanks for the feedback! I never expected people would be interested in that. But it was indeed painful balancing between all those and it was one of the biggest struggles we had over 7 years of marriage...
      But if I were to make that video in the future the outline summary would be this, hope that sort of answered your question and don't have to wait 3 months😀:
      1. Make yourself minimal: own as few things as possible, the less you own the less you clean
      2. Be conscious about family's need: expect Your significant other, your kids, will have their own lives and needs of maintenance, accept it and BE the most efficient and capable person in your household to deal with stuff, complain less, do more, it's a virtuous cycle, couples grows alike over time.
      3. Work - Realizing nothing is THAT important, be the vital person not the busiest person, save times and build exposure...
      4. Chores - Ruthlessly batch tasks, spend the whole Saturday morning on cleaning is a good idea. Doing that 30min each day is not.
      5. Priority - looking back, the best time allocation ranked by importance is probably Wife - kids - parents - Side Hustle - Work, because being more efficient in work is EASY but time spent on caring for family is directly proportionate with happiness in life. Many people put money into the equation, because they mistakenly thinking more time = more monetary compensation from your career, which is very far from truth.

    it seems you have all these time because your wife is doing everything else, and providing you the luxury of spending time to make youtube videos. it's sad that you don't listen to your family when they ask to spend more time with you.

      Thanks for the comment but I’m sorry to say this is assuming a bit too much. My wife has a physical condition which I’m not gonna get into but she’s not doing everything else, especially housework that require physical strength, she has her own goal and career that keeps her busy and I was hoping people would focus on the core ideas of the video instead of turning this into the men vs women issue…
      I don’t blame you, I didn’t give full context. If you are interested scroll down to the comment section you will see I’ve explained and replied in other comments already. Thanks for stopping by anyways, cheers!
