Short, sweet, and to the point.... without a 20 minute lecture on BS just to hear yourself talk. If only everybody would do this!
220 v
Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication making these videos. I work at a "Big Box Retailer" and ppl come in expecting is to know everything like an electrician. Guy came in wanting to install a 30 amp receptacle, but had no clue what parts he needed.
Great tutorial ! May be the best, most clear instruction I have ever come across. Thanx alot !!
thanx for your time, effort and list/links on this matter
Good video shows everything from the electrical panel including the type of wire with conductors and gauge all the way to the type of box to use four gang
Would have been nice to see you hook it up at the breaker
bravo! someone who knows how to insall a dryer receptacle. dryers & rangers were improperly wire for decades with 3 conductor romex which tied ground & neutral together. so many youtube videos on wiring are scary, this one is o.k.
Great work, Ben! Will you be doing more videos on this topic soon?
Thank you,, short and sweet and to the point exactly what I was looking for!!
Thanks! This helped a lot
Panel wiring was beautiful...a good electrician will even make the wiring you'll never see look nice! A pro!
Installing a dryer outlet
thanks for this video.. well done.,.. very clear!
Thank you for this video! I just moved my dryer down to my basement in an older house I just bought. In the process I found that I have to rewire it with new 10-3 instead of using the old 10-2 wire that was originally installed in the house. I was confused with how I needed to connect my 10-3 to the circuit breaker box. This helped me out so much!
Great video. I was going to hire someone, but seeing this video I gain confidence. Thank you. Well done..
Now the only bad thing is I have to hire a electrician certified to ok my work and show the building inspector as well.
Allways the best videos,thanks
The groud wire does need to be actually hooked up on the 4 prong receptacle. I found this out the hard way. Can't leave them hanging anymore.
Thanks for video but please don't use a ring when your work have a great week
Dryer plugs and stove plugs look the same. But are different. Dryer plug he used the neutral was shaped like an L. That’s your white wire. The stove plug the neutral doesn’t have the L shape. It’s straight. Just to let everyone know the difference
Thanks it work
Awesome video, thank you
Very good info. Simple
nice video thanks
Hello, Ben! First of all I wanna say thanks for your videos!! Now I would like to know how high should that box be. Could you please tell me?
thanks.. good info! Helped me out!!
Make sure all screw are vertical!!!!
Thank you sir!
What is I don't have a ground wire for condo built in 1987? Should have one but just wondering. We will need to replace the old 3-prong receptacle for an old electric dryer with 4-prong receptacle.
Good choice on carpet knife.
If you use that knife to install carpet then you need to find a new trade. If ya haven't already lost your fingers and buckets of blood. I remember my third day like it was yesterday even though it was over 20 years ago. I thought I was doing good by bringing my own folding knife and 12' tape to work. The old man seen them both and said get rid of them. It wasn't a long time before I realized why. If they fold then they can collapse. Our knives need to be solid and one piece. Folding knives are meant to be more convenient and are not able to handle the stress we put them under. Trust me it would be nice to just fold a knife up and put it in my pocket and not have to use a sheath or pouch. There just isn't any that work. Sorry for the long reply. Kind regards
Can this be done to any outlet? For example the house my wife and I are moving into has gas connector for the dryer. Our dryer that we have in love is electric. If there’s an outlet close by in the laundry room am I able to change it to be for this type of outlet? Thanks
Sorry to ask. but your washer hookup. I see your supply and drain lines aren't connected like most of them are. they are placed on either side of the stud. where did you get those from? I've been looking but cant find them. Also the recessed dryer exhaust too. thanks!
Very good information
Thanks
I wish I could do this!
Orientation for the receptacle to match the plug on the cord?
Cord does not come with appliance ?
Explaining the wiring was helping
does the latest NEC codes require a 30 AMP GFCI breaker?
Wish you had explained why a dryer receptacle (240v) needs a white neutral wire.
What about the CB panel hookups?
so the ground wire is indicated on the plug outlet and the rest of the wires you just made it neatly and snug?
Hi, hoping you can help... All I'm trying to do is hookup a dryer in an older building (1976 condo) and I've added a ground and converted from 3-prong to 4-prong, standard US 30AMP circuit. I've watched like 30 videos and everyone seems to claim 240V is either RED or ORANGE, and showing a FLAT wire. I have a single Romex BLACK, ROUND 10/3 wire (2 white/black hot, 1 ground, and 1 neutral bare wire) coming into a 1-gang old metal box (is this legal?). I am in the US/North American (NJ state). I simply want to move the receptable down lower on the wall out of sight, i.e. extend the Romex a foot or two inside the existing drywall, using up-to-date code and the correct type of cable, connector, and junction box(es). Please explain:
1) Why is my 10/3 a BLACK cable, and round not flat RED or ORANGE? Is this just common in older construction, or was the wrong type of cable used all the way back to the circuit breaker?
2) What is the difference between Romex 10/3 300V vs. Romex 10/3 600V, which are currently the only ones still being sold at Home Depot. No sign of any red or orange 10/3. Are these ROUND BLACK cables still current and OK to use inside drywall (like what appears to be there now), or is that the older style, for outdoor use, or some application? When did they switch from red or orange to black, and flat to round, or vice versa?
3) Does it matter whether I use 300V or 600V? What is the typical application for each? (I've googled till I'm blue in the face...can't find ANY videos talking about this anywhere!!) Is 600V just overkill? What is that typically used for? Would it hurt anything to use 600V in a 300V application (ie either fine for an electric dryer 240 30AMP circuit), or is it bad to use a higher rated voltage wire for any reason?
4) What is the proper size ELECTRICAL / JUNCTION box for a 30AMP Dryer 240V circuit with a METAL BOX (ground screw in box)? Except for yours, 90% of the 4-prong dryer outlets stocked at Home Depot and almost every video on UA-cam seem to show people installing these newer 4-prong dryer outlets into 1-gang boxes. Even the receptable instructions itself claim "Do not install in 1-gang" yet the plate itself is sized for 1 gang (only two screws top and bottom, like on a normal light switch)! What is the code for 240A? 1-gang or 2-gang? Why are the majority of outlets sold with a 1-gang plate if the box is supposed to be 2-gang?
5) What is the code and safety requirements to SPLICE and EXTEND the cable inside existing drywall? I read somewhere code says you can't have a junction box behind drywall. So do I need to actually REMOVE the existing junction box, splice all 4 wires including ground using push-fit or butt connectors to extend the cable inside the drywall, then leave that cable there loose in the wall outside of a junction box, just to relocate a new metal outlet box 2 feet lower with an outlet on it? Is it OK to drywall over the existing spliced section? (This seems a lot more unsafe to me than just leaving the spliced section inside the existing metal junction box, and then extending on down to the next one.)
Thanks if you can help. Will vote up the video...because I can't find these basic answers anywhere! Thanks
Maybe want to mention 8/3 wire for voltage drop if the dryer is quite a distance from the box like mine but otherwise great
why don't we have to ground to the metal box as is common with other wiring of fixtures?
Thanks. Is there any specific height for the dryer outlet in the basement.
A minimum of 3 ft from the finished floor. I just put mine around 38" from the floor, so it's accessible to unplug without having to pull the dryer out of the way. That lands the plug just behind the top side of the dryer and mostly out of sight.
by code, how far does an elec outlet have to be from a water source?
Im moving my dryer to a spot that dont have an outlet. Can i rewire from the regular plug thats 5 ft away. And route the wire to a dryer plug. If that makes sense
No. Regular plugs are 15 or 20 amp. Dryers need 30 amp circuits. You probably have this fixed already but if not hopefully I helped.
the wire is to small
Are ground and neutral bonded or connected on the outlet? So if you did an ohm test they would be connected?
Not on 4 wire install.
Are you supposed to remove the copper strip?
Need the panel box installation too. I was expecting the whole instruction of complete installation.
Why does an electric dryer outlet burn /melt with dryer cord. Reasons?
You didn't hook it up in the breaker box
Jeryl Carter Sorry man. Will try to get a video up about how to get that part done step by step in the future. Thanks for the tip.
what side wire can i use for light LED CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO LED LIGHT

How did you run the wire into the wall on the other side of the receptacle?
ua-cam.com/video/7R8SxBXC86w/v-deo.html
This is not the same exact installation but I show another range wiring example with the wall open. Hopefully it will help a bit!
6:32 It’s not color coded so how did you know what wire to put for each screw?
nick jones the plug typically says “W” for the neutral and the ground slot looks different from everything else (opposite side of neutral) and “X” and “Y” r interchangeable red and black
Where do ur wires the white on the breaker ?thanks
Neutral bus bar in breaker panel.
How boyt the breaker box connection
Just moved to new house and my new dryer chord only is a 3 prong. So I am running 10/3. I bought a 3 prong dryer receptacle. I am using a metal box. Do I ground the ground to the box? Because the receptacle doesn't have a spot for the ground?
The NEW DRYER came with a 3 prong chord?
Where do the other 2 wires go on the other end you showed 4 wires 0:35
So 2 12-3 wires won't work?
how come my dryer outlet only has 3 pins
Is there a reason for having the ground face up vs down?
I learned in school that having the ground facing up is just like a safety precaution say if the faceplate somehow fell off and hit the ground screw it could cause problems but if the ground is facing up there’s no chance of that happening. Idk that’s not exactly the technical answer but that’s what I remember! :) Same reason as why when your installing receptacles sideways the neutral side should be facing upwards
@@leadupont1895 Then why do we install all other standard home receptacles with ground facing down.
SimpleWick I’m not sure! I go to a trade school and our shop teacher always tells us do what the homeowners asks for, and if they have no preference then grounds up it is. I suppose it doesn’t do much extra protection and likely is just a little trick people like to do.
@@leadupont1895 Yeah that's probably just it.
There is no code for installing grounds on top or bottom. It's preference.
Never showed where the neutral went in the panel.
Where every neutral goes?
What would you do for the 3 prong dryer outlet? Is everything the same?
not on new construction since 1996..
@@tedlahm5740 Ah so no new 3 prong. Noted.
You failed to mention that this circuit is for 240 V/120 V Dryers.
Of course it is for 240v. Why would you need to hook up a seperate receptacle for a normal every day plug?
I have red white and black wires no neutral
White is neutral. Black is hot. Red is hot. Green or bare wire is ground.
White is neutral!
Better call an electrician. ....
don’t tighten your screws to tight !
I have only 3 wires
Check out videos "converting 3 wire dryer outlet to 4" or "3 prong to 4 prong"
Working with a ring or any jewelry is a no no…. 😮
95 percent of electrical connections are over torqued...only 7lb/in needed ...just busting chops here haha
Adam Silva Better over torqued then under torqued!
Your orange cable looks like it already has black white red and ground wires, at what point did your yellow (ground) cable merge into the box. You lost me there
