The Trains of Team Fortress 2

- Team Fortress 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Having played for over 7 years now with a couple thousand hours invested I'm well-versed in the wackiness that is TF2. However this isn't some video essay talking about my appreciation for the game, I'm here to discuss trains. The Trains of Team Fortress 2. There's definitely an abundance of trains in TF2 and you've probably noticed them too, that is after you've been run over and killed in the process. Regardless of how you view the trains in TF2, they have some interesting origins and real life counterparts. In this video I'll be analyzing and giving some history on the trains seen in the TF2 Beta and retail release of the game. This is a spiritual sequel to my Trains of Half Life video so feel free to check that one out if it interests you! ( • The Trains of Half-Life ) Also thank you so much for the exceptionally positive feedback and reception on the HL video! I'm glad to see many people were enthusiastic or curious to see another "Trains of" video on another game. Funnily enough I had this video already planned alongside when I started Trains of Half Life. Anyway, head to resupply and pack your hats because we've got a lengthy journey in analyzing the world of railroads in Team Fortress 2.

The loco in the “end of the line” sfm, I think is a sd40 wide nose just because of the size compared to the demoman.
but it has a B wheel arrangement... it's gotta be a GP-something, so a GP60M is closest
redleader895 in the sfm it has 2 sets of bogies which would be around the same size for a sd40 style bogie. In cp_snowplow, it doesn’t so that’s probably why the gp60m was brought up.
@@PoorBoyzPulling ah, ok
@@PoorBoyzPulling The trains in the two also have different liveries.
It was probably a GP40MC
Fun fact the Northern Express GP35 made 2 cameos in left 4 dead as a Orange with yellow stripes scheme and a military locomotive which has the KCS grey ghost scheme.
In L4D they made the model a little bit longer and shorter
SPSF for profile?
lol the L4D orange and yellow engine is in ALL of those shitty "tRaIn SiMuLaToR!!11!1" games that you find everywhere on the appstore (or playstore if ur on android) but the military one is not the same model as the northern express engine, cuz the military one has indented windows, longer body (same goes with the orange and yellow one), and thats it.
@@cozmolikeytrainz same with other vehicles and stuff.

Am: *makes a whole 3 minute long analysis on each train car and train*
Am: *makes a 20 second long analysis on the caboose*
Caboose: am i a joke to you?
I would note however that the caboose has the wrong wheel sets and the coach lamps were on the wrong end for the direction of travel as it was connected to the train at the end, and it has two stacks for the onboard heater which in practice would only have one.
Still, not bad that they threw it in.
After thousands of years, someone did a video on the trains
As a railfan, I love this series. I don't know that alot of a railfan are gamers as well. I thought railfans were mostly middle aged man, but hey it's interesting to see the young prospect.

Hold on, in the SFM Video: End of the Line-which correlates to the Release of the Update of the same name-the Locomotive seen pulling the Bomb-Loaded Train appeared to be Relatively Larger than it's In-Game Counterpart, in fact it almost matches regular American Hood Units, especially the GP60M.
Some Differences include the Regauging to Narrow Gauge........I think, probably not though due to the Tracks in the Video appearing to be Larger than Payload Cart Tracks.
One way to Compare them is to have a Heavy stand on top of Payload Cart Tracks, they're a lot smaller than him.
But in the EotL Video, the Heavy at the End is Smaller than the Width of the Tracks.
This Hypothesis about the Regauging is based upon the fact that the Locomotive seen in the EotL Video had a Different Wheelbase than the Standard B-B Configuration, instead it had a ((roughly referring to the AAR Wheel Arrangement System)) B-B+B Wheel Arrangement, with a Single Forward 2-Axle Powered Bogie and Two Rear 2-Axle Powered Bogies, possibly connected by a Span Bolster.
Indeed if one looks at the Model for the Locomotive in the SFM Video ((already on SFM Workshop as a Prop)), it does have this Unusual Wheel Arrangement.
Though other than that, not much else is Different.
Why do You type with Caps on Randomly Like this
This is super interesting! It's nice to see someone talk about something their passionate about, especially through a filter that allows non-initiated people to get invested. Great work!
Holy shit it’s the funny tf2 heavy man.
7:57 the wheels don’t even move either
*angry TF2 nosies*
Okay so the loco is stationary then.
It brings tears to my eyes seeing even the trains of this game getting love and attention.
I'd love to see an HO or N scale layout based on Team Fortress 2.
Yes please make a rockstar games compilation video of this style :) GTAs, Red Dead, etc
what happened to your channel you disappeared?
at 6:38 "Durango and Rio Grande Western"
You mean the Denver & Rio Grande Western??? LOL
Also, the D&RGW's Reporting mark includes the ampersand, so instead of Saying "DRGW" its "D and RGW"
*My favorite railroad is the Denver and Silverton*
I heard that too and came down to the comments to see if anyone else noticed it
I noticed that error.
It should also be noted that D&RGW 50 was never purchased by the Durango and Silverton, it was purchased by a Durango individual known as Bob Shank who had a collection of narrow gauge equipment in his backyard. The Colorado Railroad Museum Eventually acquired the 50 from Bob Shank along with other pieces of equipment in his collection.
@@t65bx25 you saying that makes me want to punch 78 people
4:39 could also be based on the GP39
For the subway that appears in district and mannhattan, it's more close in resemblance to the washington DC metro rollingstock in both form and finish.
I've been trying for years to build a lego version that's to scale with minifigs so I've seen many, MANY images of it.
I also used to love riding it as a kid when I lived in the DC area.
9:36 A slight suggestion: I believe that the design was geared towards the r68, a common train seen on the B and D trains in the MTA as a New Yorker, but I find it interesting that valve incorporated the iconic subway train onto its map, Manhattan. Hence the name
I've often thought of doing a model railway based off tf2. However I've always loved and preferred steam locomotive's and because tf2 take's place fairly well after the withdrawal of the last steam locomotive in america the idea of running steam loco's on a tf2 inspired railway felt weird. But as soon as you pointed out the little porter on lumberyard I geeked out a little I was so happy. It may not be perfectly accurate to real life but you've inspired me to do a model railway based of lumberyard with the porter as the main locomotive in operation. Thank you so much for that man!
9:38 Time to put my mta skills to the test: IT'S AN R42 BRO.....
Looks similar to a R68 though.
@@emdaem-771 The r68 had more of a darker front, and the frame was more curved, as here the R42 has a much tighter angle, as it kinda deviates about 10 degrees on the sides
@@emdaem-771 But I do see what you mean by the lights, it does change the look, guess preference
R68s were built in the 1980s to replace anything below R30. In my opinion it looks more like a hybrid of a R40S and R38 since those were all made in the late 1960s
@@TransitManJoe true, so mostly r42 and r68 though
I searched TF2 Trains, to learn more about the trains and lore of my favorite game. The first result was this video, it is EXACTLY what I was looking for, the guys name is Amtrakguy I mean this was literally EXACTLY what I was looking for for no particular reason today. Thank you. You’ve made my poop today incredibly enjoyable.
Trains,planes and automobiles, Valve edition.
I love this. I was hugely obsessed with trains as a kid and seeing both of my favorite games, TF2 and HL, getting this kind of coverage is awesome.
*Though I am kinda triggered by your choice of using default viewmodels as opposed to minimized* but I'm even surprised by you being well above rookie numbers like most content creators of this kind are.
This is a really lovely and informative video, thank you for increasing my knowledge of trains in one of my favorite games!
Great work AmrtakGuy! Well researched and presented.
This is such a unique and cool video idea. I really enjoyed this, as it combines two huge passions of mine. Keep it up!
man, you could truly turn this into a fun little series. There are plenty of games with trains in them. I hope to see more. Keep up the good work.
I love this channel, it's accurate to the point I lose my mind with the pleasure of learning this stuff
Great video. I have seen these kinds of freight cars and trains back when I played TF2.
The switcher locomotive also appears, outside the playable area, on the map Thunder Mountain, also with the sounds and particle effects of a steam locomotive. It's probable that the entity was originally intended to be a steam locomotive, but the model was changed partway through the development. Promotional shots for Banana Bay also originally depicted the tracks being populated by the EMD locomotives seen on Well, so that too was likely changed during development. Banana Bay has a couple other railroad details due to how prominently the train features on the map, my particular favorite is that the railroad itself is referred to as the "B.N.N.A" railroad, a cross between BNSF and banana.
7:49 The side rods don't even move.
9:30 I’ve lived in New York City my whole life, and as an avid MTA Railfan, I can say that looks more like an R68 or R68A than an R32. The R68/As were built between 1986 and 1987, out of the timeframe but it probably went through unnoticed by the developers.
Watching your video and i was pleasantly surprised that you put in The Southern Michigan Railroad in the video with the train pulling the tourist train. I am the Trainmaster for it. I do like all your videos keep the great work
Yay great job! I really like this. Keep it up.
Thank you youtube recommendations for showing me something I didn't know I wanted.
7:58 "This is completely unaccurate for a gas-powered locomotive, AND IT KIND OF ANNOYS ME A QUITE LITTLE BIT!!!"
If only these guys knew how to use those locos to pull a train of payloads, would make their lives and job more easy, also more challenging and fun
Oh they tried once
*plays footage of End of the Line*
It didn't end well...
The End of the Line engine reminds me of when a model railway engine gets stuck in front of an obstacle, the way it's shaking around. 😋
This is such a niche concept of videos that I never knew I wanted.
at 9:39,
I believe that this train has more resemblance to the R68(a) cars that also run on the NYC subway. Although it does not have a rollsign on the front right window and is two doors shorter.

"Or Ah Gon USA"
Is that how people outside the state pronounce it.
We tend to pronounce it with a silent "Ah", as in "Nobody can hear you scream if you wander off into the woods."
in Washington we pronounce it somewhere between "Origon" and "Organ"
Almost everyone I know pronounces it Or-eh-gen/gun
Love these videos, keep em coming!
My god, your casual knowledge of locomotives is simply impeccable
I think you've found something works for your channel with this series, good work and the best of luck in the future.

Great video, very interesting. All this is making me do is think hard about trains in other games and what they look like...

doesn't expected videos about props in TF2. but, nice work
I know nothing about trains, but I love TF2. This video was quite interesting!
Fine video, keep it up!
I really hope you do more games!
The "D" in D&RGW is Denver, not Durango.
As of about 1983 or so, what's now known as the California Zephyr (formerly the San Francisco Zephyr), when headed east, it travels over parts of the former D&RGW trackage in eastern Utah, starting at Provo, going straight into Colorado, ultimately meeting up with BNSF (I think that's what it was; it was BN when I last traveled to Denver in 1983) somewhere in Colorado.
Before, for trains headed east, it would travel out of Utah into Wyoming, through Evanston, then stopping in Cheyenne, where the locomotive was removed from the current end and put on the other end of the train for the trip south from Cheyenne into Denver.
I can’t believe it took me this long to find this video, I don’t play TF2 yet but I want to soon. I’ve only noticed the Southern pacific locomotive in meet the scout
Good analysis, I love playing on maps where you can throw your enemies into the trains, hah!
