Trains Galore | Team Fortress 2 Rotunda Map Analysis

- Team Fortress 2's 2023 Summer Update has been quite the experience! The game demolished its alltime concurrent player count, gave us 14 new maps, 1 new gamemode, and a good few cosmetics, taunts, and unusual effects. It even saw Jerma985 and STAR_ reuniting to play the new update. However, today I'm gonna be focusing on the new train-themed king of the hill map Rotunda. I'll be talking a bit about the map's development and its inspirations, and then take a look at the trains and other details featured on the map. Think of this as a Trains of TF2 Part 1.5...

I have seen that one on the community made map, mvm_downtown, durring a community MvM event. It acted as a forward spawn for the robots.

I will always appreciate and applaud new train maps in TF2. Trains enhance every map they're in.
Nice to have a small followup to your Trains of TF2 video. Next outta be the Left 4 Dead or Counter-Strike series, if you've played those. Fun fact, nearly every train model in L4D is just a modified TF2 model with proportions made less exaggerated.
5:16 Oh yeah! This was inspired by a unique tanker model that goes unused. I don't remember if it's just leftover in the retail files, or if it was discovered in the Postal III leaks or recent massive Valve gigaleak at the start of the year, but it's cool to see the concept repurposed on this map.
I'm still learning with hammer, but i'd like to make a tf2 map that is also train focused. I have an idea for a 3 stage a/d map that shows a simplified process of restoring a steam engine. Stage 1 would be capping the workshop to start work on the engine. Stage 2 would be capping the coal tipple to fuel the engine up, and stage 3 would be capping at a station to get the engine ready to leave.
One day i'll get this done. Hopefully.

This is honestly one of the best maps ever added to the game! I do also really like Phoenix and Pelican peak as well
More TF2 trains. The summer update gave us more trains and railcars. 5:11 those seals plushies look really cute. 6:41 yes the little locomotive looks cute. American diesel locomotives in a German map? Also some German tank engines. 7:22 thats a seal not a sea lion. 7:25 look at her go really caught me off guard. 7:48 thats funny.
The red soldier with blue intel buried under rubble is a homage to Karma Charger as he used to make videos explaining weapon statistics in TF2 but has since deleted his channel and disappeared.
Seems unlikely, but either way, rip soldier, he killed everyone and took a briefcase

The rail lines might be similar to the Prussian Rail Lines, with efficiency being the key factor
Seals, Mimi sentries (I know they're not official in the game), and this Rail layout with your locomotive info have been incredible add ons to the TF2 game!

the only thing I would do to that locomotive would be to make it into an 0-6-0.
I think the story of Rotunda is that RED and BLU both want what's in the container because it'll aid their fight for the Mann Bros and all the Workers got wind of what was gonna go down and legged it.

My theory of why the blu and Red team and their rolling stock are in Germany is that the mann brothers wanted to spread there company to europeon countries but didn't want to pay extra money for European cars so they took there american freight cars and gp38s with them and only bought the steam engines.
We can all go for more trains in games, that's for sure

It looks like they're using an abandoned shed for the battle for the control point and it looks like either one or both teams dumped coal into the turntable to stop it from spinning so that they can also block entrances and exits to their intelligence and to stop the other team from trying to use any other engines to pull out the load on the turntable by turning the table

I highly doubt that he will do this, but it would be cool if he reviewed the similarities of Lego train sets and real trains. Again, probably not happening.

Good map, sky net bots ruined it.
To be perfectly honest, while I "dislike" PvP shooters like TF2 (don't ask, "dislike" is for politeness' sake, the real intensity level goes WAY beyond that) I will always appreciate trains in games.
Apart from the cartoonish characters, I honestly think these maps would be right at home in a Half-Life game and I hope that someday we may get more, non-VR, Half-Life games with controllable trains. For example, I would love to be able to take full operational control of the Depot as Gordon Freeman, and use the Razor Trains there to help the Resistance win against the Combine.
While it's a good map, I think it's pretty ugly. No attempt was made at color theory and there's junk everywhere cluttering up the visuals.
