Great video! The most important thing is that the daughter will grow up with knowledge of retro equipment. At present, people born after 2000 don't even associate Playstation anymore. A little bit sad. Well done!!
You keep making me add to my retro gaming to-do list and I just got my Nvidia Shield up and running with RetroArch and built my boxy pixel Rpi CM3. Keep the great content coming:-)
Great idea and video. Too bad about the mix ups. I think the combo you intended would have looked great. What you ended up with here turned out quite nice as well. Luckily, you had the white lens handy which goes well with the pink shell.
Just trying to imagine how I’d have felt if I could have had this gameboy upgrade back in the day. I never know what happened to mine. Assuming parents threw it out at some point.
If your daughter is already interested in RPG's like Pokemon then another good game for your daughter would be Final Fantasy Legend 2. Best RPG on the Gameboy.

I quite agree with your whole point, but his daughter is 9yo, i’m sure no kid of that age would like to open a easter present that’s unplayable. She will surely remember with happyness the moment when she opened her shiny new gameboy, receving it disassembled would leave her a disappointment feeling that could even make her hate diy. All of these not addressing the tact that this is a work that requires precision that kids usually don’t have, the risk of screwing the build up is high for a 9yo. In 2-3 years she will be old enough to start making projects with her father if so she wants. Overall i repeat that i concord with your poi t of view, but maybe it is better to start doing it during the pre-teen and teen ages, when the need of self affirmation and indipendence starts to take over and the little boy/girl can feel the accomplishment brought by problem solving and decision making.
My concern with modding Gameboy systems has always been the D-pads, usually the ones they offer online feel loose and can’t really get a good grip moving left and right since it’s cheap plastic compared to the original so I was wondering, is the quality from retro modding any good?
@@anthonya.jumelles7103 They also have a guide on the page for silicone bits that details which color will get you closest to the original feel. Worst case scenario, just clean up and reuse the original.
Great, straight forward video as always. What are your thoughts on upgrading the voltage regulator on the dmg? Have you experienced any dimming or flickering of the screen?
I wished you explained to viewers who don't know what DMG is at the beginning... It stands for "Dot Matrix Game" for you who don't know. Otherwise another enjoyable video content 😉
Even with all that care, the screen still isn't centered vertically. One of the reasons I'm not swapping the 101 screen on my GBA SP (other than the fact that it works perfectly fine)
The screen is great, but apparently the drop-in motherboard results in the buttons not feeling "right" when registering inputs; will wait for a v3 for them to iron out the remaining issues.
This is correct. On mine, pressing down on the d-pad will not register about every 5th or 6th press. Also, with the thicker pcb, it seems to put too much pressure on the silicone pads, jamming the controls. I had to use thin, cheap silicone pads and loosen the screws around the d-pad just to make it playable. The screen is amazing, but I still reach for my backlit/biverted dmg for playing games.
Enjoyed the vid. I found 2 DMGs that have issues. So they have to be fully functional to pull the board? Also, I have a clean Gameboy pocket (which might be my favorite iteration) and a Gameboy color..which one is easiest to install a screen in? I don't have solder currently.
Look what I did Mommy! A twelve year old mod using a sewing mat because it makes me feel tech savvy- can I have my cookie and a pad on the back now!?!?
I've had nothing but trouble with the EZ Flash. Every few weeks, the save data gets corrupted and I have to scan and repair the card. I also have to keep restarting my games. I'm just going to get an everdrive. I don't know why I didn't in the first place. Would have saved me so much time, frustration, and money.
That black bar can be avoided by not using the method in this video. You can center it better by taping it to the inside of the shell, or using a better bracket from a different website. Using the little metal tabs on the back of the lcd won’t result in a perfectly centered screen.
gota question about the color pallets... i got the funny playing ips v2 in my gba sp and i play a ton of Tetris i was messing around and held down the brightness control and was pressing random buttons. the D-pad caused the color scheme to change, is that Nintendo or the funny playing hardware? id like to know. also the gba screen looks really crisp and tetris is the only gb game i have that works before anyone asks,
I think pressing button combos before the game starts (while it’s on the opening Nintendo splash screen) changes pallets for original Gameboy games. It’s probably not the new screen, as it’s only connected to the brightness button.
@@HowdyYT thank you, i was really just curious because of the ability to do it on that particular display. i purchased a damaged AGS-001 to repair and well that's the only thing i wasn't sure about
