VERY PRO Thanks!
That’s an old car stereo installer trick - I always had a 9 volt battery and did this to check polarity when I needed to verify
The man. 👍🏾 Shout out from 2024.
Secretly arcade 1up is happy with what you did with this cab ,these cabs will sell a few extra thousands because of this mod.
Agreed. I was on the fence regarding buying an Arcade1up cabinet but after seeing that modding is possible, it's a definite purchase for me.
100% agree!
Totally agree
Reason i bought one
Same here. I'm here because I want to make a cheap cabinet. Will buy now.
I’m positive I’m not alone, but you should definitely make an updated video.
You are the Michael Jordan of arcade1up modding. The absolute 🐐
Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial. One thing: Do yourself a favor and use industrial velcro instead of two-sided tape. It's not too expensive and it'll make it much easier to remove/replace components if you need to.
Followed this and everything works great *ADDITIONAL TIP!* You can remove the mount plate from the Original Joy sticks and transfer them to the Easyget Sticks show in the video so you don’t have to drill new hole for the stick mounts! Thank you ETA Prime!
Robbie Whiplash Do you have a link on how to do this? My stock stick plates were super-glued to the board so I’m wondering if removing them and sticking on the better sticks would be easier to do.
SmaMan No, I personally don’t or know of one. I just kind of figured it out on my own while I was doing the mod.
Thanks, this helped me today
I've always had a dream of having an arcade cabinet in my home. With these cabinets and your video, having a cabinet is actually a possibility for me now without having to shell out thousands of dollars. Thank you, sir!
Felt the same way. Just did it for Christmas. Amazing experience and pretty easy.
Dude. Everything about this upload screams High Quality. I mean everything! What I love most is how simple you make it and how you like to drive the point of being reasonable for the build rather than going all out just because you or anyone else can.
I like how often you repeat yourself which is important when watching these Educational videos as you take the information in and start getting new ideas, you need to hear the same thing at different moments to ground you and remain practical.
Fantastic Upload! Especially because everyone has been waiting for someone to mod the cabniet and who knows what sort of video we could have gotten from anyone else.
Your video alone is gonna cause some sort of notice from 1 Up. I just hope it's all Positive!

Appreciate your time and effort on this tutorial. It was VERY DETAILED, specific and easy to follow! My Arcade1UP is on the way and originally I was gonna keep as is because I thought the process to mod was tedious and long, but you showed me otherwise and now the gears in my head are churning and turning! Thanks a lot!
Did you ever mod it?
@@nix2939 Yeah I did. Took sometime getting everything I needed and researching the many options and ROMs, but it came out good.
Was there a spot to plug in the light for the marquee?
@DJizLurch is there a place to just get a complete rom download or did u do one by one
This is the most comprehensive vid I've seen for doing this type of Mod. Interestingly, the newest LED buttons I got look exactly like yours except they have connections like the encoder board on the bottom instead of the 4 leads. Thanks again for making this vid!
This is a perfect step by step setup. Appreciate the help.
To the man who started it all I say thank you. I just finished my arcade1up mod. I used happ buttons and joysticks though. Thanks again.
could you share which one you found :)
Are those the baseball bat style sticks? I want to mod one and want to use sticks and buttons used on the neo geo arcades. Ive researched and i think they're made by happ. Do your sticks have a smooth 360 "feel" like no square or hex gate? Tia
Thank you for this video! Just completed this myself by using your instructions. Only thing I changed was pulled out Volume/On-Off switch and expanded those holes to fit 24mm buttons. Works perfectly.
Awesome!
ETA PRIME show us how to still use the stock power and volume switches with this set up. Thats all im missing, please!
Thank you for the tutorial! I finished converting my street fighter cabinet to retropie and everything is perfect!
Irie Island Gaming did you drill any holes ?
For items like the amp, I'd recommend using velcro instead of double sided tape. This way, if you need to remove anything in the future, you can pull the amp off the side to access the wires. Much easier than trying to disconnect by reaching around to the far side.
Yes.. and i know to never use zip ties... Instead, use Velcro wrap.
This video is fantastic. I love how you explain everything perfectly and how honest you are with the parts you bought and letting us know how to save money on which parts to buy. Great Job keep up the good work.
He is a great teacher!
Very cool vid dude. I just snagged one of these and was curious about something like swapping out the buttons and I’m kind of an idiot when it comes to taking things apart so I’m happy to see it’s pretty simple.
This is the crossover I want to see! Do it up! Do a video together!

Seeing a random RGT comment is like going out of town and seeing a friend in that town. As someone said this would be a fun crossover.
I just bought one of the video controllers and they were actually kind enough to include the nut and bold for the ground cable. Nice touch!
lol same. I was so happy, because I'd forgotten to grab a bolt before starting, and when I reached that step I cursed myself until I found the extra bolt in the kit!
gonna be doing this with mine soon! Thanks for this tutorial!!
Did you ever end up modding the cabinet?
Thanks to you, I decided to purchase a Marvel Super Heroes 1up and modded it by following your tutorial. I ended up adding recessed USB ports and the coin buttons on the front panel. It's running off Retropie on Ubuntu(using an old laptop). I even hid a Wemo SmartPlug and scripted the auto shutdown and power on of the cabinet. This was an amazingly fun project. Thanks a lot for your tutorial! :)
followed this video in 2021, and everything went flawless on my SF2 Arcade 1Up! I wanted to preserve my deck protector so I instead drilled the coin buttons in the piece of wood thats slanted under the control board and put the coin buttons there. Looks fantastic! Thank you ETA!!
Thanks for making this vid! Modifying my sons cabinet will be so much better now that I’ve come across your vid.. awesome detail, step by step.. etc
👏👏👏
Wasn’t even remotely interested in modding my cabinets. That’s changed now..
Awesome ETA PRIME.
Got three cabinets, will change all the buttons out first, and then I will get a SF cab and add a Pi.
Probably have built 10 retropie setups. All done with some of your tutoring, of course! Learn something new every time you do a new build. Keep them coming. Although the only thing I would have done different was implement your two wire single button shut down with script method on the power button!!!
stupid question, but where do we find the software to put on the pi ?
THANK YOU ETA PRIME! I followed this video and modified my Mortal Kombat II Arcade 1up cab. Never done anything like this before. GOT IT WORKING. I just purchased an SD Card pre-loaded with games and it worked. Now i have my own Arcade cabinet in my Basement!
I followed your instructions and they were great. I only had one problem and that was the wires for the CFL were to short to reach the wood part. So if you take the old board out of the metal box there is a piece of plastic behind it. I took it out and taped it to the metal monitor back and then taped the controller board to the plastic. Thanks again for your instructions.
You literally a life saver mine has the same issue with regards to wire length was looking at reusing the pcb box but now ill just follow this instead, cheers mate
Thank you so much for this! God bless. I just started modding my free gifted sf2 1up cab and have the same problem.
Hey @ETAPRIME. I just ordered the lcd controller board kit from your Amazon link.. It actually came with the screw and nut for the ground.. Tia!
justin priaulx which link, he posted 2
ETA, another great video! Maybe one of the clearest videos I've watched for assembling buttons!!!!
Wonderful job. I want one!
I'd even consider putting a little coin slot that uses some generic arcade tokens. Just to have that *insert coin* feel and sound. Especially when the coin hits the little box of coins at the bottom and makes that clink sound.
Thak you very much for this video. 3 years late to comment but I've just powered down mine after getting it all set up following your directions, works like a charm. Childhood dream come true stuff! Clear and concise and tells you everything you need to know.
got mine yesterday made the mod directly and it's work fine ( beware of the resolution of the HDMI LCD Controller Board when you buy )
REALLY looking forward to the Pandora’s box vid, especially the home version. Thanks for the great content!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Can’t wait to see the Pandora’s Box mod for this cabinet.
The tutorial was great! I finished the mod last night. I added a 2nd speaker for stereo!
how do you add a 2nd speaker? also how do you turn on/off and adjust volume?
@@baophan4067 You can add a 3" speaker on the other side and drills holes in the same pattern. I brought a switch that plugs into the power strip
@@Reggie4087 the switch turns the unit on and off or controls volume?
@@baophan4067 I don't use those buttons ..in the tutorial he recommended using the AMP for speaker audio... it supports stereo I just set the audio at a reasonable setting and close the unit
How do you properly shut this down?
Speaker tip- use a AA or AAA battery. Hold one wire on the bottom of the battery and then tap briefly the other wire to the top of the battery. If you see the speaker cone push out when you tap then you are in the correct phase and you'll know which wire in positive and negative. If the speaker cone pulls down then you are out of phase and you'll know you just need to flip the wires around to have the correct phase. I also swapped out my speaker with a two way Kicker 4 inch speaker, it sounds great!
curious how many ohms stock and kicker one you used are

Does the rasberry pi come with games or do you have to set it up?
steven monteith set it up but it isn’t hard at all and there are plenty of videos
You can just buy an sd card with the games and insert it in the raspberry pi right? I'm a tech savy kind a guy but this is something I'm new at.
"Cheap and gets the job done." That's what I like to hear.
Thanks for going over the encoders, ETA.

This is the arcade cabinet we dreamed about having as a kid. Very cool. I want to make something like this.
Jason Hassler I didn’t dream about it when I was a kid my uncle had an arcade store 🏬 and I remember we use to play Atari with Nintendo controls it was awesome 😎 and in my opinion this new Arcadia cabinets look cool but nothing to do with the old school ones!

watched this video 6 or so times while waiting for my parts to come in. thanks for the 💡

Thank you so much for this. I was on the fence for getting one of these because of the cost and the amount of games that it has, but with this mod it's a no brainer. I'm going to be buying a PS4 for $150 on craigslist and trade it in to get $250 credit towards a 1upArcade from gamestop. Thanks Again!
I'm doing the same thing.
I did same things, traded in system paid 80 with tax. 10 was added for edge shipping (if inpatient you can get sent overnight). Ordered in store 10-5, got today 10-9. Will mod system today.
@@mysticguy Congrats! I'm actually putting mine together this moment. Waiting for the pi to be delivered later today.
@Jay Te
Great, finally put mine together last night. I still need LCD controller board. I Have LED joysticks and Raspberry PI. Had to order from China, says it’s in NY now. Wish there was an alternative I could use for now.
@@mysticguy same I'm waiting for my led board too. You can use a tv or computer monitor ( anything with hdmi) for the meantime to make sure everything is set up, and connect it to the pi.
If I did this, I would put the select button under where the normal coin slot would be. Haha and add an actual coin slot for donations.
If you're crafty I think you might be able to make a coin slot into the select button, you would have to turn the coin slot to a switch some how.
Edit: I did some quick research and it looks like it can be done. Here's a link to a "Coin Drop Replacement Pushbutton" goo.gl/jAP8Fp
I was thinking the same thing, but I would make mine for cosmetic reasons only. Where to buy a coin slot button or just a door with the buttons that wire up in the same manner as an arcade button?? 🤔🤔🤔
@@jayte7139 Thank you!! Exactly what I was looking for! Now I just need to find buttons that allow me to put either paper or printed clear plastic with printed letters and words to label my buttons (i.e. A, B, C, Start, etc..)..
I did that on my build hidden out the way
@Kevin Baumann I'm not sure. I just saw it online doing a quick search. At the end of the day it's a switch so I dont see why it wouldn't.
great video! I did the same on my partycade, but instead of running a power strip, what I did was use a 12volt splitter and a big 12v power supply: I then Used a 12volt USB hub for powering the pi, and tapped everything from the 12volt splitter. That way I only use ONE power supply for the whole arcade. Also I am using a partycade.
Fantastic video, thansk so much i got this up and running in a day. Just a tip for anyone doing this, the deck protector will also need 2 new holes drilling to account for the extra buttons. Wasnt mentioned in the video so yeah just be aware, but otherwise I have an awesome cabinet now with all of my favourite arcade games. :)
Show us how to connect the on/off and volume switch!
You don't have to add more buttons, you can set the P1 start and credit button to the same button.
I have a fullsize mame cab and a bartop arcade with Pi inside and I only have a single button for each player and has caused no issues.
So the player 1/2 button works as both insert coin and start game?
@@dogballs99999 I would like to know as well
I found out that if you are using a Sanwa JLF or JLF clone joystick, you can still use the Arcade1up joystick mounts(on mortal Kombat 2 cabinet, not SF2). the 4 screws on the middle of the JLF mounting plate (around the shaft) line up exactly with the Arcade1up mounting plate. no need to try to re-center or drill new holes for the joystick. just unscrew the 4 center screws from the both plates, and swap them.
Cant believe this is 4 years old now.. I sometimes wonder if you know just how many lives this one video changed. Thousands at least. Every modding group im in shared this one video religiously.
Thanks for the awesome and detailed video ETA Prime! I just got the Arcade1Up - Atari Tempest Legacy Arcade, which doesn't have any joysticks, so I plan to drill some holes into my board and add them. Will be a perfect addition with the spinner and trackball!
Great walkthrough super easy to follow. Thank you just nodded my MK2 cabinet. Any chance you'll make a video of upgrading the player panel from 2 player to 4 player?
Yo man I know this is old but I had 2 questions as I got an MK today. 1:did the sticky tape ever come loose? And 2: where did you end up putting your extra buttons? The button placement on this cab is a tad awkward imo

I would love to see you make a cabinet build with a steering wheel and a light gun
I think light guns would only work on a PC setup, since you have to emulate a mouse to make those work on a LCD/LED monitor. I don't think a pie can emulate light guns using Wii-mote like guns.. I could be wrong, just a theory.
i dont know the capabilities of a pie emulating guns, i was thinking about the pc build he did with the ryzen 2200.

@Big Shacaca. The instructions I have seen from ETA show that you put retropie on the micro card and then use a USB drive to load the games. It hasn't worked for me. I'm having lots of issues. So can I just load everything on the micro SD card and skip the USB drive? Once I have retropie in the micro SD card. Where do I place the wolfonzo image on the card? lol I see you added the amp part thank you :P
For some reason my video editor didn’t render that part with the video. You reminded me that it wasn’t in the original upload.
Note the amp linked above doesn't come with a DC power adapter. So you need to either get an amp that does come with a power adapter or purchase one separately.

Thanks for the guide. Just got a MKII cabinet and a pie 4, cant wait to deck it out!
Love the videos. Can you do an update on modding the Arcade 1up using this same approach but with a pi4 4gb? Curious about performance gains, any issues or different steps with Retropie, and if games like Killer Instinct are possible after overclocking to 2ghz.
What’s the Eta on uploading the Pandora’s box video? Thanks!
RustyGrill the ETA should be Prime... 🤣
I'm curious myself. This has been a phenomenal learning experience. My SFII cabinet is on the way and I'm slowly going to buy the bits & pieces to begin working on this!
First of all, AMAZING VIDEO!!! I’ve got a SF Arcade1up on the way and I can’t WAIT to play it! This video makes me even MORE hyped knowing I can add more games. I’m SUPER low on cash and want to do this as CHEAP as possible. As a total noob with doing stuff like this, I must ask, am I required to buy one extra button for each player to act as a select button or will retropie let me hotkey select buttons in?
Also, if I just want to stick to the default speaker that comes with it, is an amp still required? Thanks in advance dude!!
DISCLAIMER I'm not doing this mod, nor do I have anything in this mod video. This is an outside in perspective.
The amp circuitry looks like it was integrated in the original computer module, which is removed in this video. It appears you will need a amplifier if you do this mod. I recommend a Lepai lp2020 if you want to keep the original speaker. The lp2020 support bridged mono configuration, which will amplify the input on 1 speaker using the entire amplifier. If you want to use new speakers, the lp2020 is still a good choice because it also supports stereo 2 channel input and output.
Another option would be to duct tape in a set of cheap usb speakers to the inside of the cabinet, and run the 3.5mm jack into the raspberry pi.
Jonathan Clark I’ll keep this in mind whenever I mod this in the future! Thank you!!!
Excelent video, I’m a first time modder and this worked very well. Have a couple of questions:
1. Having issues with the sound (no sound at all) anyone else had the same problem? 2. What’s the best way to set up the controls for SNES use? 3. What’s the best way to turn off the system without affecting the SD card? I usually have to reconnect the SD card to a pc to repair it because the LCD light stays red. Any insight anyone might have would be very useful, I’m a first time modder so I suppose I’m ignoring some pretty basic rules when it comes to Retropie. Great video, thanks for everything!
having same issue withe the no sound, did you figure it out?
I bought the Arcade 1 up Centipede legacy edition yesterday on clearance at Ross, Dress for Less, for $51.99!! I work there so I got it for 20% off as well, so with taxes. I only paid $44.09!! =) I can't wait to put this thing together and play Asteroids, which is my all time favorite classic retro game. I also have a Raspberry Pi with RetroPi already on it. I have everything to do this mod except the button kit and encoder boards. I actually have 3 Raspberry Pi"s. After seeing what the mod is, I think I'll just leave my cabinet as is and if I want to play the other hundreds of games I have on my Pi, I'll just connect it to my TV. I will probably get the button kit and the encoder boards for my raspberry Pi though.
I was looking for a tutorial on how to actually get these games on the raspberry pi itself
Let me know if you haven't already I can help
Im totally going to do this, but I wish the on/off switch was in use!
I think i'm going to wire mine to my amp to turn on/off audio. May use the volume as a "Select button" then.

Just followed this last night and on/off and volume switches are working!
Hi, i LOVE what you did with the Arcade1Up and i will try to do the same with mine.
just one question, I did not understand from the video, how do you turn the arcade cabinet
aspberry pie on and off?
Since you show the On\Off switch on the cabinet is not used in this setup.
Thanks to anyone who helps clarify this.
Late response, but I assume he just unplugs the cabinet from the wall or toggles the switch on the power strip that everything is plugged in to.
Didnt see it in the vid and just ran into the issue. The LCD controller board, make sure you check your LCD model number and match the controller board to the right LCD, I just followed the links in this video and bought the one linked and that was for a older model LCD. Arcade1Up must have switched at some point. Happy modding and hope this helps someone! Will check back tomorrow once I get my new controller board =P

I'm having a similar issue. Did you resolve it?
@@JohnnyDollar720 Did you ever get an answer I am having the same problem
@@quintinbailey08 nope but I figured it out. You have to go into the retro pie screen and configure the aspect ratios to 4:3 for each system
@@JohnnyDollar720 Thanks for coming back and giving the solution. There's too many people that don't do that, so I appreciate you doing it
So end of the day, you are probably better off with a wider cabinet with better buttons and joysticks that is meant to be used with a Pi
The idea is that after the holiday I bet you could snag one of those cabinet for even cheaper.
The way the joysticks are mounted is really weak, too. An adult really going nuts on that control panel could break it.
No kidding. The only thing he really did is save some time, but $20 worth of MDF and a jigsaw plus an $80 monitor would get you to the same point he started at except you could build it full-size and use a better monitor.
Now I can add marvel vs capcom
