Thanks so much for putting this video together Jake, such a useful and comprehensive resource to have all in one place. Regarding touch pads, I've always traditionally gone the soldered route and used the select/L/R controls where possible, however I've recently been using the STEPPER step sequencing software a lot and this makes a lot of use of these three buttons and has rendered a lot of my GBAs unusable so I'm currently leaning back towards touch sensors on future builds for that reason. Yeahhh... I got the funnyplaying 3.0 kit not knowing any better and it has been a very bad experience. Exactly like what happened to you, a waywire touch sensor and cracking shell. This video was super helpful and now I know which kit to go with in the future
Great video, Jake! I have the FunnyPlaying 3.0 Kit. I really like that you have full access to the OSD without any soldering. I know soldering isn’t that difficult but I didn’t want to buy a soldering iron just for that. And also there‘s a risk of pinching the wires. So I skipped the soldering. The installation wasn’t that difficult. The bracket was a little bit annoying but doable. Overall I‘m pleased with that kit.
@TwoFvceJ honestly is not as bad as I thought the plastic feels fine much better than the cheap ebay shell I had on it. I'm satisfied with the quality, and the display was easy to install.
@Vei0102 you have any issue with the touch sensor? I'm thinking about getting it also. I just don't see the point in soldering when select+l/r doesn't have a quick shortcut for brightness. All soldering does is open the menu from what I've heard.

I don’t think you talked about the frame blending feature. it’s incredibly useful for games that try to render shadows, as the devs for old games flashed a sprite on and off with the garbage original gba screen it worked. But with ips screens it flashes, which flame blending fixes and makes the shadow look transparent.
Yeah I forgot to mention that because I always forget about it😅 it’s a set it and forget it thing for me and I don’t think I play any games that actually need it. It’s a great feature though!
Yes, exactly my thoughts! Frame blending is a must have on IPS kits. I think the drop-in V5 does not have it? Makes it less of a recommendation to me :(
Really appreciate the vid. A lot of great information. However, it's quite obvious you don't care all that much about picture quality. You gave a handful of seconds to say they are all the same, but I myself, and I think a lot of people, care a ton about the look of the screen. For one, which of these screens have perfect integer scaling? Do they have any filters? How do they look? How close are they to the AGS and SP screens? What about the aliasing? The very low ppi on the gba screen and large pixels meant it had a very distinct look to it and a lot of the art was designed pixel by pixel for that resolution. Since the pixels are very visible to the naked eye, without perfect integer scaling you're sometimes going to get a fuzzy or aliased picture which might produce some strange effects and looks compared to the original. This is particularly true with lower res screens. I for one don't like screens which don't have perfect integer scaling and relatively square pixels to recreate the look of the gba image accurately. Incidentally, this is also probably why most screens don't have horizontal tilt correction. It would make the image look really bad. That's why I picked the hispeedido v5. Perfect integer scaling means an exact 3x3 block of pixels represents one gba pixel. It also has a filter that uses 2x2 pixel blocks (and turns off the others) to recreate gridlines similar the original pixel grid lines on the AGS. It's not perfect, but it does a good job. Would love to have this info in your future vids. I considered other screens as well, but couldn't find any that used perfect integer scaling except the funny playing ITA kit. They claim it has the feature, even though the actual screen is a bit bigger (maybe they use firmware to only use the right number of pixels?). However, the pixels on that kit are longer vertically and look more rectangular. I bought one to install, but still havent gotten a gba for it yet so I haven't seen it work in person.
I have two GBA motherboards and was about to buy a shell, buttons and a drop-in IPS from funnyplaying. Seing the shell quality I'm not sure anymore... Which one should I buy now? I just need a high quality shell and an easy to install drop-in IPS kit... 🥺 I want to be sure that the shell fits perfectly with the screen.
My first modded gameboy was with the funnyplaying 2.0, so now that I wanna get another modded one I think I'm gonna get the v2 kit because it's something I'm used to, plus I have access to solder irons now. for brightness control.
I bought a funnyplaying IPS v2 drop in (no solder) kit in 2021 and it stopped working 2 years later. It seemed like the shell was pinching the innards... I had to really tighten the screws to make the shell pieces flush. I don't know what happened but I don't want to keep buying a new screen kit every 2 years. Ill just get an SP. I don't know if I feel confident that there is a screen replacement that will last "forever". I also dont need all those menus and chroma options... I just want the screen to be lit. What mod kit with no soldering?
Been looking forward to this one. Thanks for putting it together! Now I just gotta' decide between IPS and ITA... Just curious, why'd you choose the V2 over the Drop-In?
Great video 🙂 A GBA SP with (One chip) Hispeedido V5 with about 8/9 on the brightness with the pixel grid option turned on - is number 1 at the moment nothing comes close in my opinion 😊 I have tried them all and even then lesser known ones and even some prototype screens. A nice higher 720x480 resolution compared to the others ✓ 9 pixels to 1 pixel ✓ x3 integer scaling ✓ With a FunnyPlaying MaxPlay Battery that they made in partnership with Makho or a Helder Game Tech MegaBat ✓ On my original GBA I have a Funnyplaying ITA screen it's my 2nd favourite. The original AGS-101 screen is 3rd tied with the one they call the Funnyplaying 3.0 (inch) IPS screen. Unlike others i didn't like the Funnyplaying V2 (9380) screens. Personally i don't like playing GBA games without having a grid, it makes all the difference to me.
@@JakeSimmons It's all good 😄 it's a subjective thing I have many friends who don't like it either. Your video was great because you talked about how easy (or not) they are to install & all the issues one may encounter.
I'm about to upgrade my ancient cgs laminate sp kit to the v5 kit, pretty excited, I have the laminate ITA kit in my gba too, I don't care about pixel grid personally but it doesn't bother me. I like the color temperature and the lack of other common issues in IPS kits that the ITA kit solves
The lack of integer scaling and thus pixel accuracy is the biggest downside to the FunnyPlaying kit in my mind, even though your great points on the shell nonsense (and touch sensors) are spot-on. The more "pixelated" a game is, the more you can notice the effects but it just makes the whole image have an "artificial" or even emulator vibe in my head, regardless of the filter effects you use or don't use. What I also find crazy about the FunnyPlaying touch sensors is just how bad they are (and this happens on GBC too). I haven't had any issues with false triggers or strange interactions on any of the Highspeedido touch sensors when everything is buttoned up properly, but all I have to do is put certain games in and it guarantees that my Funnyplaying screens become haunted with false touches.
I got the funnyplaying 3.0 laminated kit and it looks gorgeous. Sadly, the d-pad is not great, despite me having done quite a bit of troubleshooting already. Cleaning, screwing tighter, looser, original button, original membrane, 'new' membrane and buttons.
@@JakeSimmons I did some more testing and the issue seems to be a bit different than I initially described. What seems to be happening is that when the membrane is pressed in (when it feels like it clicks) the conductive part actually needs to be pressed a bit further to make enough contact with the pad on the motherboard. This makes it so 'softer' presses aren't registered consistently, or registered at all. You'd have to press quite hard and after playing for an hour, I found my left arm/hand actually hurt from the extra force I had to use. I am using the original membrane so I am not sure what else could work. Super grateful for the initial reply but if you've got advice for me now that there's a bit more info on the issue, I'd really appreciate your input!
@@JakeSimmons I've found the culprit. The FunnyPlaying shell, the front bit, seems to have a defective screwpost. This makes it so there's not enough pressure on the membranes and makes the connection shoddy. I've sent an email for a replacement and I am fairly certain that will fix the issue!
@@A_d_e_k Well, it hasn't ended yet. I had to pay the shipping cost myself and thought I'd combine it with a little speaker module but they forgot to send the replacement shell with it so I am still waiting for my parcel to come hah.
I use a cloud drop-in, and it fits in an oem shell. It had the same issue with the screen not being lined up right. If I do another mod with that screen, I can get it lined up better. Also it isn't laminated so I was able to get a glass lens! This is a great video. Thank you!
Great video Jake! If i had to choose this would be the perfect guide to choose from. I bought a GBA with an v5 laminated IPS display on ebay for 82€ two weeks ago, because the seller fcked up the installation by breaking off some 0402 capacitors on the gba pcb and ripping off two solder pads on the IPS PCB (SEL and R IIRC).. But nothing you can't fix with a hot air station for 25€, some flux and spare capacitors^^. Before that i had a v2 IPS GBA which i got from ebay as a non functioning bundle too. That kit was already nice and all, but i hated that i only had one touch button for brightness and the screen filters combined (short and long presses).. I accidentaly changed the screen filter so many times by just showing my brother something.. (the touch pad didn't come with a long wire, but rather a 1cm flex cable pad, which came directly off the display ribbon) With the v5 i have the OSD + SEL L/R controls, which are just perfect imho. v5 any day baby! Currently i'm thinking about getting a lipo usb-c kit, but i'm not quite sure which one yet.. I really want the "play while charging" feature..
I usually build 1 of each, for Example I own the following; GBC: GBA: GBA SP: OG V2 FP OG V2 HSP OG V2 IPS OG V2 HSP OG ITA FP OG V2 HSP IPS Q5 V3 IPS FP ITA SP KIT 2 x Amoled AGS-101 Mod V3 IPS FP All this being said, I pretty much like them all. My favorites being AMOLED for GB and for GBA/GBA SP my favorite being IPS V3 or yes even ITA (The colors are less saturated and come closer to original AGS-101 which for some games like Golden sun, are very good rendering, love the battery life of both V3 and ITA and the features).
I'd love to see lag tests for these different screens. See just how much worse or possibly better these might be compared to the default screen for button responsiveness.
Hello Jake. You have a great channel. Thank you for providing great detail on installation and honest feedback. I just did my first gba mod and your video helped me all the way. I’m planning to do this as a hobby since I love electronics and gaming. I had a couple of suggestions. I used kapton tape to hold the screen to the plastic piece that you forgot to use in your other video to hold it in place while installing it to the shell. Wish I can post a picture here. Other than that I followed your video and everything worked flawlessly. I will continue to watch your videos. Thank you
Which would you say is the best for a rarer shelled console? I have a blue Suicune 001 and a grey Pokémon centre one 001, I want them to retain the original lens and housings, not have some janky replacement housing that'll crack
I've watched the video the whole way through. But I'm still stuck on whether to go with the V2 or the V5. The V2 has better battery, but the V5 looks slightly better. I'm not sure.
@@gabrielreisinger8047 correct. It blends frames together to simulate to poor response times of the original screens. It’s only nice for a few games and even then it’s not horrible without it for those few games that could use it
I have no idea how good/bad the ips kits funnyplaying are offering are since I don't have personal experience with them. I did however install their ITA(DSi lower screen) in my original gba, and it has worked great for about 7 months now. The install was pretty easy aswell. Only needed to trim the shell a bit and decided to cut the touchpad and just solder everything to avoid any future problems.
Great in-depth review! Could you do a similar comparison using the RetroSix GBA screen? I've bought one to install but would love to see how it stacks up to the others.
I won’t cover anything from that company because of the things they’ve done, but I will say their mod kits are not good. From what I’ve seen, the power draw is very high and from experience, I dislike their “prestige” shells
@@JakeSimmons NGL, I've heard that before but started buying their parts before I heard the rumours. @@JakeSimmons I will say that their dehum dehiss kit does remove both. But an IPS mod adds some hum back. So still worth while, until someone can show me something better.
Where do you suggest buying fully modded GBC or GBA? Just now getting into it after the nostalgia hit. Also do you have any gameboys that are original parts and everything? If so do you play them or are they display only? Sorry I am so new to this
Jake thanks for the helpful video! I just subbed❤ Is there a kit you recommend for restoring gameboys for resell? The one you were going to use for your videos seemed like the best
Personally I ordered these: Hixon Rechargeable 1.5 V AA Lithium Battery, 3500 mWh I bought them from a local gaming shop that uses them in VR sets. You can find them online everywhere I guess. They make my GBA with IPS last 10-11 hours max. Bought 2 packs of 4 so good investment.
Is the FRM feature available on the drop-in v5 or is it only on the laminated v5 and 3.0 FunnyPlaying? I saw previously FRM wasn't on the drop-in v5 until the laminated v5 came out, so wasn't sure if they updated the drop-in v5 to have FRM.
Thanks for the vid. I sit in the train a lot to and from work and wanna mod a Gba. Think I'll go for the v5 kit since playing in the train is a lot like playing outdoors I guess. Also, thanks again for the Gamecube pico mod video, i modded mine a while ago and it runs great!! So happy with my modded GameCube ❤️
The reason the V2 lasts longer than the V5 is simply the higher resolution, v2 is 480x320 so 4 displaypixel is one gamepixel, V5 is 720x480 so 9 Displaypixel is 1 gamepixel. Higher resolution = more power hungry
I came here from your OEM drop-in video and was about to cart out with the Hyperspeedio dropin screen from your link.... I just wanted to ask though, is that still gonna be my best/only option if using the oem shell? I thought i might be able to trim the shell to make a dif screen fit.
@@JakeSimmonsThis does help thank you. I went with the v5 and usb-c mod from the retro repair store link. Trying to recreate my childhood device which was a clear glacier gba, will def be going back to your drop-in guide

The only thing I can take away from this video is that it only convinced me that I've made the right choice by getting the V2 kit!!!! Great vid Jake, very informative! 🔥
@@saki3963I got the V2 kit when it was the latest mod to come out at that time. After a year or so then the V5 came out, to tell you honestly I kinda wish the V2 is as easy of a drop-in install like the V5.
@@saki3963 oh yeah, now that you've mentioned the battery life from what I've experienced. I have rechargeable double-a batteries with 1200 mah capacity each. and I set my brightness to 2nd from the lowest brightness. The battery lasts from 8-10 hours. It's very great. As for the difficulties I had installing it, the brightness controls needed to be soldered to the ribbon cable. My kit included some thin gauge wires but unfortunately those are short so I ended up ripping the solder pads from my ribbon cable. So I bought another ribbon cable and bought 30 AWG (american gauge wire) I cannot stress that enough. Cut the wires at least 5-6 inches so you can have some needed space when installing. Also that is the first time I've ever done soldering. If you have a friend or know someone who has experience soldering electronics just hire their service. It's much easier that way. But if you want it to do it yourself. Invest in a good soldering iron, flux and solder lead. It'll make the soldering experience faster and easier. Update me if you've done the installation. Enjoy!
@@saki3963sorry for the late reply. Honestly it was not that hard but considering it was my first soldering experience it was quite challenging for me even though I needed to solder 6 pads in total. But if you know someone who's great at soldering it'll be an easy thing for them.
Do any other kits have the "true gba colours" that the retrosix cleanscreen suposedly does? (It suposly asl has a dmg colour mode too that sounds cool) I feel its a nessesary feature but i hant seen anyone compare them yet.
I'm new to this stuff and I STILL dont know what I want. I'm not gonna be playing in the sun, or in a pitchblack room, but also need easty installation with no soldering and a battery life to last the day.
Quick question, I found my gba-001 but it is a midnight blue Toys R US edition in great shape. Is this too rare to mod? I'm just now discovering that we can update these things.
It’s up to you! A lot of people would say you shouldn’t but do what you want! If I were gonna actually play it, I’d mod it. But if it’s gonna sit in a glass case, I’d leave it. You do you though
Huh, I've done all of these kits and actually liked the funnyplaying one the most. Having the screen insert from the back and the bracket made it all feel really secure. Didn't have to rely on adhesive that may fail at some point. I've never had any issues with the touch pad, are you securing it to the shell at all? I always tape it down to the shell/lens, or just cut it off and insulate with kapton tape since I don't really like touch sensors. Also never had any cracking issues. The need for a custom shell is the only real downside for me with the FP kit, but really most people are getting new shells anyways when doing a screen upgrade. That cloud gaming store kit is trash though. I've actually been disappointed with every kit I've tried from them for various handhelds.
Hello! Nice video mate. I recently found you (now subscribed). But one thing...aesthetics... Since all kits come laminated and glued to the lenses... I prefer the original lens so that's very important for me. And that's why i decide to buy CGS. It's the most similar to the original. I prefered maybe another screen option but for me the lens is a important thing for aesthetics. For example, HISPEEDIDO lenses for GBA SP are with very bad logo for GBA. And well the rest of them are with that silver logo that i doesn't like very much...
What-the?... How did it come to this. First I hear about an IPS screen years ago, then a V2 which I assume rids of the V1's orange hue. And now it's a whole thing where you have 5 different iterations of IPS screens. What's next? 720x480 OLED screens? The Switch uses OLEDs. Though that isn't very wise. I understand why companies are just throwing OLEDs into their legally distinct Steam Decks. OLEDs wear out, we should be using QLEDs for durability.
Went with Hispeedido laminated in my two GBA systems. Great screens, one minor hiccup (my fault), but overall impressed. I do NOT recommend shells from Ali though… My opinion..
I always thought funny playing has the best shells, their gbc shell is very good and their older ips ready shell for gba is super sturdy, I still use it. I'll get myself a Laminated V5 with shell and compare that I guess. And also a laminated ITA is on my list, I'll see if I have problems with the shell.
@@JakeSimmonsI still have my old IPS V2 FP shell and now have a laminate shell since I changed over to an ITA kit. The quality even in just the texturing is so much worse on the laminate shells, they didn't just change the screen cutout.
I want to be sure that the shell fits perfectly with the screen.
I've done multiple GBA builds now along with a couple GBCs and one DMG. This was super helpful for the me going forward with future GBA builds.
What are the main differences between the V2 and V5? I’m not sure I’m following.
Awesome comparison, thank you. The CGS kit tested was the new one with the 720x480 screen?
that wood original is sssoooooo good. can we get that shell anywhere
My first modded gameboy was with the funnyplaying 2.0, so now that I wanna get another modded one I think I'm gonna get the v2 kit because it's something I'm used to, plus I have access to solder irons now. for brightness control.
Great vid. Now we need one for the sp.
That is next
Just curious, why'd you choose the V2 over the Drop-In?
has longer battery life and is brighter
I have the V5 not laminat and I'm happy with it beside of the Touch control.
may i ask why didn't go with the v2 with better battery life?
Great video 🙂
A GBA SP with (One chip) Hispeedido V5 with about 8/9 on the brightness with the pixel grid option turned on - is number 1 at the moment nothing comes close in my opinion 😊
I have tried them all and even then lesser known ones and even some prototype screens.
A nice higher 720x480 resolution compared to the others ✓
9 pixels to 1 pixel ✓
x3 integer scaling ✓
With a FunnyPlaying MaxPlay Battery that they made in partnership with Makho or a Helder Game Tech MegaBat ✓
On my original GBA I have a Funnyplaying ITA screen it's my 2nd favourite.
Yeah I forgot to touch on the pixel grid stuff because I don’t ever use it😅 but I understand there are some folks out there who do
@@JakeSimmons It's all good 😄 it's a subjective thing I have many friends who don't like it either.
I like the color temperature and the lack of other common issues in IPS kits that the ITA kit solves
im torn, the v2 has 3 hours more battery time which is huge. but the v5 is easier to install for a beginner, and the screen is better
Have you tried a fiberglass pen on the contacts on the board? That’s my go to for bad buttons
I've sent an email for a replacement and I am fairly certain that will fix the issue!
how did it end? :) @@StefanPiano
@@A_d_e_k Well, it hasn't ended yet. I had to pay the shipping cost myself and thought I'd combine it with a little speaker module but they forgot to send the replacement shell with it so I am still waiting for my parcel to come hah.
This video has been so helpful for me and let me pick out the best ips for a mod for my friend's birthday :)
(the touch pad didn't come with a long wire, but rather a 1cm flex cable pad, which came directly off the display ribbon)
With the v5 i have the OSD + SEL L/R controls, which are just perfect imho. v5 any day baby!
Currently i'm thinking about getting a lipo usb-c kit, but i'm not quite sure which one yet.. I really want the "play while charging" feature..
I like the touch pad I always tape mine down and have never had it get stuck like that
Pretty new to this and doing some research that brought me here so... What's wrong with the ITA one?
What case do you prefer
I usually build 1 of each, for Example I own the following;
GBC: GBA: GBA SP:
OG V2 FP OG V2 HSP OG V2 IPS
OG V2 HSP OG ITA FP OG V2 HSP
IPS Q5 V3 IPS FP ITA SP KIT
2 x Amoled AGS-101 Mod V3 IPS FP
All this being said, I pretty much like them all. My favorites being AMOLED for GB and for GBA/GBA SP my favorite being IPS V3 or yes even ITA (The colors are less saturated and come closer to original AGS-101 which for some games like Golden sun, are very good rendering, love the battery life of both V3 and ITA and the features).
Would the V3 ips fall under the 3.0 category he talked about?
I'd love to see lag tests for these different screens. See just how much worse or possibly better these might be compared to the default screen for button responsiveness.
The best ips kit for me would be the drop in, I wouldn’t want to sacrifice an oem shell personally plus trimming just doesn’t sound fun🤷♂️
Which kit better emulates the stock screens scanlines.
If it helps, I think they look about the same color wise
@JakeSimmons if I recall. The V2 does not have frame blending, but the V5 does correct? Remind me what frame blending does again?
@@gabrielreisinger8047 correct. It blends frames together to simulate to poor response times of the original screens. It’s only nice for a few games and even then it’s not horrible without it for those few games that could use it
I think I'm going to go with the V2. It's not that much cheaper. But the better battery life and the brighter screen make it a bit better.
I'd happily reply indepth with my good and bad experiences of the other GBA and GBASP mods I've tried, and why I prefer their parts over Funnyplaying. I respect the fact my experience is dwarfed by yours so happy to compare experiences. Maybe a UA-cam thread isn't the best place though...
@@JakeSimmons I will say that their dehum dehiss kit does remove both. But an IPS mod adds some hum back. So still worth while, until someone can show me something better.
Retrosix is a scumbag, thieve and backstabber. Also his products are garbage and rip offs of originals.
@@swingstylezhi Luke,
Nice to see you have multiple accounts
Where do you suggest buying fully modded GBC or GBA? Just now getting into it after the nostalgia hit. Also do you have any gameboys that are original parts and everything? If so do you play them or are they display only? Sorry I am so new to this
Amazing content, thanks for sharing!
I got the funny playing v3 kit and I love it not had any problem with the touch sensor yet ...... also I like that it was glass screen lens
I bought the V2 a while back and absolutely love it. Although my GBA does need a new speaker...
may i ask why you didn't go with the v5?
@@saki3963 i dont think the V5 was available 3 years ago

Jake thanks for the helpful video! I just subbed❤
Is there a kit you recommend for restoring gameboys for resell? The one you were going to use for your videos seemed like the best
Kind of have to agree with the 3.0 kit got a faulty cable but they did have great customer service and I didnt have the sensor update
How do i fix the 3.0 Funnyplaying screen from changing brightness randomly.
When using a modded GBA do you have any recommendations on rechargeable AA batteries? And does it matter if it’s 1.2v or 1.5v for the output?
I prefer the LADDAs from ikea. Nimh batteries will be 1.2v and lithium AAs will be 1.5v. Both will work
Personally I ordered these:
Hixon Rechargeable 1.5 V AA Lithium Battery, 3500 mWh
I bought them from a local gaming shop that uses them in VR sets. You can find them online everywhere I guess. They make my GBA with IPS last 10-11 hours max. Bought 2 packs of 4 so good investment.
Panasonic Eneloop is my go to battery. Works amazingly well
Literally just ordered a GBA to mod today… perfect timing
Any news on changes for the V5 kit battery life?
I want to do a Boxypixel GBA mod - what IPS kit do you recommend I use?
I just want to know whose bright idea was it to start putting touch sensors on GBAs to begin with
Og gba doesnt have a brightness control button at all so its a simpler solution to adding a button
like which one is easiest for beginners? the drop in?
Are any you don’t have to solder for brightness to work?
So happy with my modded GameCube ❤️
may i ask why didn't go with the v2 with better battery life?
Where can i get v5 shells? I dont want to do trimming and the aliexpress ones are plain.
The reason the V2 lasts longer than the V5 is simply the higher resolution, v2 is 480x320 so 4 displaypixel is one gamepixel, V5 is 720x480 so 9 Displaypixel is 1 gamepixel. Higher resolution = more power hungry
Dose this have noticeable visual effect?
@@TIm-brew i dont know, but i would think thst 4 times the pixels should be enough if you prefer better batterylife
Quick question. You mention that the hispeedido requires a special shell. Are you talking about the ips ready shells?
This should hopefully answer your questions

My hispeedido v5 I bought on AliExpress from the hispeedido store says laminated but also says drop in so I have no idea what I’ve purchased 😂
Ahh so now I know why the ribbon tore when installing my IPS on my GBA. It was FunnyPlaying lol. This is super informative Jake! Thanks dude!
I came here from your OEM drop-in video and was about to cart out with the Hyperspeedio dropin screen from your link.... I just wanted to ask though, is that still gonna be my best/only option if using the oem shell? I thought i might be able to trim the shell to make a dif screen fit.
The V5 is my favorite for dropping into an OEM shell and the V2 is my favorite overall but does require trimming or a new shell. Hope this helps
@@JakeSimmonsThis does help thank you. I went with the v5 and usb-c mod from the retro repair store link. Trying to recreate my childhood device which was a clear glacier gba, will def be going back to your drop-in guide

From Nicholas Richards
The only thing I can take away from this video is that it only convinced me that I've made the right choice by getting the V2 kit!!!! Great vid Jake, very informative! 🔥
may i ask why you didn't go with the v5 with easier install
@@saki3963I got the V2 kit when it was the latest mod to come out at that time. After a year or so then the V5 came out, to tell you honestly I kinda wish the V2 is as easy of a drop-in install like the V5.
@@TheGentleCreepersdid you have trouble installing the v2? im really considering that one because of the extra battery life
@@saki3963 oh yeah, now that you've mentioned the battery life from what I've experienced.
Where did you get the wooden shell for your advance?
Do any other kits have the "true gba colours" that the retrosix cleanscreen suposedly does?
(It suposly asl has a dmg colour mode too that sounds cool)
I feel its a nessesary feature but i hant seen anyone compare them yet.
I'm new to this stuff and I STILL dont know what I want. I'm not gonna be playing in the sun, or in a pitchblack room, but also need easty installation with no soldering and a battery life to last the day.
I have a FunnyPlaying IPS v2 which broke, and I bought the shell for that version, would a v5 fit in without trimming?
It would not. You would need to trim it
Quick question, I found my gba-001 but it is a midnight blue Toys R US edition in great shape. Is this too rare to mod? I'm just now discovering that we can update these things.
It’s up to you! A lot of people would say you shouldn’t but do what you want! If I were gonna actually play it, I’d mod it. But if it’s gonna sit in a glass case, I’d leave it. You do you though
Great Video! Very entertaining and informative. I think I'll get a V5 😂
May i ask why you aren't going for the v2 with longer battey life?
Wait so you just made a video a couple back saying the v5 was the best, so are you saying the 2.0 is now the best?
the only thing about the v2 that beats the v5 is the 3 hour longer battery life and its brighter
So if I want to uprgade my OG indigo GBA without changing the shell the drop in V5 is the way to go ?
Yup!
So on your experience recomend th V2? And stay away for eveything that is funnyplaying?
Exactement la vidéo que je cherchais, merci. Beau travail. +1
Hi! Jake what cleaner do u use to clean GBA SP's PCB?
99% isopropyl alcohol but don’t spray it on the buttons directly
What-the?... How did it come to this. First I hear about an IPS screen years ago, then a V2 which I assume rids of the V1's orange hue. And now it's a whole thing where you have 5 different iterations of IPS screens. What's next? 720x480 OLED screens? The Switch uses OLEDs. Though that isn't very wise. I understand why companies are just throwing OLEDs into their legally distinct Steam Decks. OLEDs wear out, we should be using QLEDs for durability.
the gameboy color recently got an amoled mod so it’s probably heading that way

I'll get myself a Laminated V5 with shell and compare that I guess.
