Really nice upgrade. I still have my original GameBoy I purchased back in the day. I've considered doing a screen mod to it, but decided to keep it original, however I should pick up a used GameBoy and do this mod myself. I have screen modded my GameBoy Advance with a backlit screen and that looks amazing!
I built a metal DMG game boy and got the same screen kit. It took forever to realign the flex cable, but it was worth it with how amazing it looks! A few screws are loose, but I’m sure I can get that sorted out soon. There’s also a slight screen adjustment I’ll need to make as well, but as of now I’m just glad it’s working. Thanks again for making a video on this IPS screen kit!
The best screen without a doubt, I just changed the screen on my Game Boy and I am simply speechless when I see the improvement against the previous screen, In the same way I keep my original Game Boy intact and I bought an extra one to make the mod, good video 👌🏻.
It’s has made the GameBoy so much more enjoyable for my 8 year old (I even did this mod on a GameBoy color for my Daughter). I love the original screen, but let’s get real. We are not getting younger…..and this makes this easier to see 😂
@@RetroTechorDie absolutely agree my dang eyes are starting to give me crap too I just got a freaking Game Genie after 35 years dude 😆 2 days ago and I have one of those old Radio Shack booster with the huge magnifying glass, I'm going to upgrade it with better battery system put LEDs in the old bulbs, BUT I won't need too if I get a screen like this I don't imagine and I wanna get one for my son now and do the same he's 16 this year!

It’s a nice mod me personally I let my son play with my Gameboy with the original display so he can have a truly authentic experience just like I did I even bought some for his friends and brothers so they can all play together they decided they wanted to play all the games in order and on real hardware it made me so proud and sad at the same time I miss my childhood so bad
I have screen swapped two DMGs. Both had screens that couldn't be saved. I have three DMGs that are totally usable in their original state, they're staying as is, will probably sell one.
I found my dad's original gameboy, and sadly, it had bad screen burn and irriplacible damage to other regions of the screen, so I decided to get a RIPS 5, I'm super excited to surprise him.

Luckily the DMG CPU board was fine, but the screen had a very damaged lens and bad damage, as I said before. I am looking forward to the arrival of my package! Excited to see more videos from you!

Man these new displays look amazing. Myself Im looking into doing a DMGC mod. it comes as a plain board and requires a lot of soldiering, but it uses a GBC CPU in a DMG shell and will play GBC games
Agreed, to me it feels like a different device. However it is nice seeing my kid play it in the car at night and not having the lighting struggles I had.

How many hours do the AA Batteries lasts with this LCD IPS mod? I just bought one GB Classic from AliExpress exactly with this mod the last week and now I’m just waiting to have it in my hands and enjoy it, it looks beautiful! But I was wondering how much this mod affects the battery lives and how many hours do they last :)
I don't have any hard numbers, but my son plays it a LOT! The draw isn't excessive. I am not using any special rechargeable batteries, just normal AA's.

I'm wondering though if i should also opt for the rechargeable battery too then or if it's not that much noticeable difference to just use AAs and leave that part original, I'm going to buy one on ebay that's already been modded with or without the backlight and with or without rechargable batteries
I just use the AA's and havent seen a difference. However recently I did replace the power regulator due to some issues....I think this needed replaced due to age and not the screen as my non modded DMG was having similar issues.
Awesome. Just ordered one. It’s perfect because my contrast wheel is pretty busted and has to be in the perfect position for it to work correctly. Also I’m already missing the grey screen protector.
IMO nothing drastic...I think the RIPS has a better user interface...but all this is subjective. When I was researching what screen to buy I found this Reddit post ( www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/kxlniz/review_retro_modding_vs_funny_playing_shells/ ) In the end, both are an improvement over the original screen, it is really just up to you to decide what features and user interface you like better.
I modified my GBC with a hispeedido ips lcd and could never go back. Considering modifying my DMG and GBA. I ordered an analogue pocket but that could take a very long time and modifying my gbc has given me the urge to start playing gbc/gb games again
Most of GB DMG sold in the former USSR in 90s were more golden green than pure emerald. My old GB palette is: C0 - R24, G63, B05, C1 - R20, G52, B08, C2 - R17, G42, B11, C3 - R11, G32, B10. Brightness is 05-10. Notice that on those old monochrome LCD the contrast was quite reduced and there was a trail effect.

I have it. It’s a game changer it’s so hard to play with the og screen. I think my eyes where better when I was a kid! If the OG game boy is in good shape tho - Keep it! Ps. You can change to 36 different Colors with this mod.
No regulator or other parts needed! I haven’t noticed any big loss in battery life, but any that is there is worth it given the increase in image quality! I have seen drop in USB C battery options that would work as well!

I've just answered my own question with a bit of thinking what I have around the house.. 2 Dabs of tamiya color enamel paint x-19 smoke with a fine paint brush. $4aud online or local hobby store. Took me 10min to do with pulling apart the unit and a quick blow dry on the wet paint Looks exactly like the original dmg red led and no where near intense on the eyes.
Im not fully sure I understand your question. The LCD Kit comes with a the front PCB for the buttons and the video Driver PCB. You keep the original main PCB (where the cart plugs into). To be honest.... For your kid, yeah give him the left. But for me, give me the right any day. For GBC/GBA I like the backlit IPS screens. For classic GB, it's just weird and wrong to me. This has helped me decide to keep it authentic.
100% agree with you, I still prefer my original GB! This has helped open the door for my kids since it makes it more on par with modern games. I have noticed my son wanting to use my original GBC more often. His next GameBoy will likely be unmodified.

That is the kit I ordered, I assume they made a revision and updated the bracket but not the image.

Pretty sure you don't need a Dremel out The screen area. It's just a few pixels. It's not like it's going to matter

I have not, but you likely can use a marker to dull the bulb of the LED.

Nah, give the DMG a proper mod, so it LOOKS the same, same colors etc, but lit up

Where did you get the pokemon yellow cartridge sticker at? A lot of times the colors are always off or dark or whatever, but yours looked good.
