Building Our Off Grid Power System - (prepping for boat life)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лип 2020
- Thank you so much Renogy for helping make our boat life adventures possible! Lou worked so tirelessly on this electrical setup and after weeks, actually months, of effort it is finally working successfully. We can't wait to show you the final solar install, but just thought you should know that this video was edited happily on solar power on the boat :)
If you are looking to go off-grid or add solar power to your life please use our affiliate link www.renogy.com?afmc=WildWeRoam with your next Renogy purchase!
Our Solar Installation:
- 2 x 160W 12V Flex Panels (installed on top of our bimini)
- a 50W 12V Flex Panel (installed mid-ship on cabin top)
- 3 x 100W 12V Panels (to be installed on our stern arch)
- a 2000W inverter
- 2 x Rover 40A charge controllers
Electrical is one of the most daunting systems when it comes to building any off-grid life, but thanks to our previous experience with our van Ody we (Lou hahah) were able to tackle this project with much more confidence. I hope you enjoy this one!
Big hugs,
Dana

Can I just say...the transition with the circular saw was.... fantastic!!!! I will forever love your editing.
The way you guys narrate is so inspiring, I aim to be this calm and collected
I really like their videos because they are not making everything look either super easy or very difficult. It just takes time and patience to have a great outcome and that's a lesson. Try and err.
@@madmetal75 Yeah very genuine people :)
gosh this little comment thread warmed my heart so much. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch our videos and engage with them in a beautiful way. So sorry for the delayed response! its been a super hectic and intense last few months, but were finally settling into life on the water. cant wait to share more boat life videos with you! sending all our love - Dana
@@WildWeRoam no worries I'm actually glad you took a bit to respond, now I get to enjoy this video again :)
We love Lou's excitement "woot" throughout the video. Electrical systems take so much time and nuance. You did great!
Thank you Matt and Katie!!! So happy to hear you appreciate all of Lous determination. It still blows my mind that I am typing on a laptop that is charged from the SUN :) Solar power is just magic! - Dana
You need to use marine grade wiring. It is significantly more expensive but it is tinned and will not corrode. The copper stranded wire you installed will turn green and you will get voltage drop in a very short period of time. Also use closed end cable lugs.
+1 on tinned copper wire, it's actually a requirement if you want to meet ABYC standards so not having it might cause you problems with insurance. Regardless, tinned wire is superior.
How beautiful it is to see people enjoying the simple life , the cubans are so friendly and kind.
i love you channel , best wishes and good health to you all, Chris UK .
Living vicariously... it's so nice to see young people taking life by the horns and figuring it out along the way! Thank you for sharing your adventure!!
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving such a beautiful comment !! We so appreciate the love and support :) Sending big hugs your way - Dana
8:20 I would recommend to get used to having it closed. The last thing you want to happen when you are out on the ocean is someone falling down those stairs when a wave hits the boat. Had to experience it once with a friend of mine and we were really lucky that nothing bad happened. Falling down there can happen so much faster than you think...
Plus when underway, the companionway hatch is a perfect place to sit - hidden behind the windscreen.
Thanks so much for the tip Felix! We've always had the aft cabin closed up for sailing, but I think keeping the other hatch closed makes a lot of sense. We always make sure to have all the windows closed so no one clips an ankle or falls down when dealing wit the sails. Slowly were getting the hang of this thing and used to the boat in all her different set ups :) Thanks for being here on our learning curve -Dana
I could feel the sheer happiness Lou had when everything was working and when it stopped working you can feel he was so dejected ☹️ broke my heart. Wishing you safe travels with great weather ☀️
gosh it really was a rollercoaster of emotions getting that electrical system up and running!! but happy to report lou is editing right now and i am working on my laptop all charged from the beautiful SUN :) solar power really is so magical! - Dana
Wild We Roam As someone who’s lived near the water for most of her life, there is no greater peace than being out in open waters and taking it all in. Get a diving license/certification, what you find in the water is so much more breathtaking and is like a different dimension!
Take it slow out at sea, stay close to land, its really scary in bad weather at night take baby steps to get your sea legs take time. 👍
I hope they see this
wise advice.
Staying close to land is the worst advice for anyone on a boat especially during the night time. Landfall winds can push you on a reef and then you are there - at night. on a reef.
@@Flaubert but most insurance companies won't insure novice sailors to be far out at sea, especially if they don't have their certifications & radio licenses. Also, night time passages, are not for novice sailors, learning how to handle and sail their boat safely.
Thank you so much for this advice!! sorry its taken me so long to get back to you. just sitting down now to do a bunch of comments. things have been so crazy busy the last few months, but i am really happy to report we have headed to this advice even before reading it :) Inch by inch were building confidence and getting our sea legs and were so grateful to have wound up in a community of such knowledgeable sailors who have been super generous with their time. Cant wait to share more adventures from life on the water with you soon - Dana
So impressed with Lou! Such tenacity with that electrical system. Y’all are so fun to watch EXCEPT when you went down into some kind of tiny space (evidently I’m claustrophobic) my heart rate went up and stomach dropped! Y’all please stay safe!
aww oona! thank you so much for such a sweet comment! so appreciate the love and support :) - Dana
Thank you for showing the trials and troubles instead of only the happy moments. I'm inspired in that instead of paying someone to do it, you worked hard on this system all on your own.
Lou is a gift for Dana, he is such a cool person ! Likewise Dana. Have a wonderful life together and enjoy traveling ! All the best to both of you !
we really do feel so grateful to have found each other in this life :) thanks so much for your love and support ! - Dana
That must feel fantastic...creating power. Nicely done. Power to your boat no1. ✅
Dana has the best little giggle.
My heart broke when the electrics stopped working 😭 Lou did an epic job sorting it out. Looking forward to the next project xxx
I admire ALL the hardwork you guys put into whatever you're doing, no matter the timeframe - living an earth-friendly lifestyle, having fun with photography, learning an instrument, living in a van, writing a book, living on a boat and so much more! It's so fun to see you guys try your hardest and have the work pay off!
These are highly intelligent people.
It must have been suuuuper frustrating to scrap the original layout, but the new one looks so much easier to access and understand!
I am so happy for you guys!!!! You were born for stuff like this, building your home, making it better, traveling in it and passing it to someone else so they can experience it as well ☺️
When Dana showed up I had an ahh this is what I was missing moment. I was enjoying watching Lou work of course. There were some great shots and transitions that reminded me of the van build days. But your interactions as a couple provide an indescribable warmth. I quite enjoy having both your top notch craftsmanship and calming chemistry in one video. Thanks for sharing your journey. xx
oh gosh brionna :) you are too kind! thank you for all your love and support on our videos. feels so amazing to get to share these adventures with you! - Dana
i have no idea what Lou is doing most of the time but i still feel so invested 😂
You guys are doing such an awesome job and putting in a ton of work on TOP OF amazing shooting and editing! It will be worth it when you are out adventuring the world 🌎
It's so fun seeing you guys along this whole journey. Dana you're such ani inspiration! ❤🥰 Hugs from Poland 😊
Thank you so much for such a sweet comment Anna! We're so grateful to have you here and the whole Wild We Roam community :) Sending all our love - Dana
Beautiful edit on this one you guys! The visual storytelling was super effective and engaging - really communicates the amount of work, knowledge, concentration, and creativity that went into this big project! Lou gets big ups for his persistence and resilience here!
You and Lou are so handy! You are so blessed that Lou knows so much about electrical and everything! You're saving so much money, it's great. Love seeing how excited you both are!
Wow! That was so much more complicated than I thought, hats off to you for sorting it out. The boat is such a beauty. So very very proud of you all.
These videos make me insanely happy... never stop posting please! Your work and your souls are unbelievably inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing!
The commitment, dedication and patience you have inspires me so much.
I love this! My favourite part is Lou’s joy when something works :)
Finally the excitement for this new adventure is bigger then the loss of Ody 😂❤️
I really like the cuts at 3:49. The cut with the saw and in the edit.
Watching your progress and the hard work (mental & physical) that goes into your prep is making these videos so exciting. I feel like I am right there with you guys (minus the sweat). Mazol tov.
You guys are so competent, I'm endlessly impressed! Wonderful job, you're so inspiring!
I’ve said this before but Lou looks so healthy, bright eyed and energetic. Obviously, things are going well for him.
:):):):)
Wow that was epic! So glad you managed to get it working the second time, and well done for ploughing on...
I am always so impressed on the skill set you both possess! Much love
your proud screams are so infectious
I wish I could work that well with my partner. Or is that the magic of editing 😁 great job guys. You are Inspiring
I think it might be a good idea, every time you drill through a wooden section, to rub some epoxy into the cut before you insert the instruments etc. It might help prevent damp and mould issues?
You guys are amazing! Your hard work is admirable, even with back pain.
You guys are awesome, your talents continue to astound! Cool, calm and collected - thank you xxx
Another outstanding episode in the magical boat build. The music selections really added a lot. Thank you for your courage in sharing your emotions as the tasks move along. Buckets of love and admiration to you both.
Seriously you two are so inspirational, this is such an exciting journey you are taking us on. A thousand thanks for sharing! 🙏✌
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your kindness with us in the comments :) sending big hugs your way - Dana
@@WildWeRoam It was my pleasure to share the kindness. You two are just adorable. If ever I feel stressed I know watching one of your vlogs will just melt the stress away. Peace love and big Gypsy hugs! ✌🙏
Love the quick and clean pace of the video!
You guys are incredible! Congratulations on all your hard work paying off!
*I hope you guys see this comment! I recommend you to draw a schematic of the electrical system!! This helps you so much if you have to find any failure. Plus it makes future installation easier as you have a nicely documented scheme. Just don't forget to update it if any chances are made.*
Greetings from Switzerland
You guys are doing amazing. Your knowledge base is growing exponentially. Take time to be proud of yourself.
Great work for you two and thank you for sharing.
A bit of advise: at 13:19 video time, I could see that you used some "metal" pipes to pass the wires. To prevent chafing (damage to the insulation and shielding of a wire) i suggest to use some rubber at the entrance and exit of that pipe or protect the wires with extra protection on those spots so if chafing occurs, no damage is done to the wires. This applies to all passage holes that you have made.
It's so fun when you do a cool transition like you did with the saw! Also, I'm amazed by how handy you all are!
Proud of you all and love the channel...I came across your channel towards the tail end of your van life (I promise to one day catch up on all your vids). I've been sailing off and on for several years. It's absolutely amazing. I'll be doing the live aboard thing in about 3 to 4 years myself.
You guys are such ridiculously impressive people! The quality of your videos is so good, that song while Lou is building made me tear up a little bit. I'm so proud of you guys!
Great work Lou!!👍
Looks great. Can't wait to see you guy's take the boat out and start your adventure.
So proud of you Lou!
Admire how you two/three tackle these massive learning curves. 🤩
I just love your videos. I cant wait for some ocean footage. Just an hour of nothing but music, a story, and those beautiful scenery shots. Its so relaxing to watch. I always wish I was there.
Thanks for working hard and inspiring us all to work hard and truly take care of the people and life we love so much
Totally cried when the system broke on Lou.. Loving all of these beautiful videos! Thank you for sharing something so special to your guys heart❤️❤️
This channel will blow up, I see it. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your adventures ♥️
I've been watching in the mornings before I start my day. Your videos are so peaceful and I love seeing all the work and dedication you put into your new home.
go get'm tiger(s)! Goodonyas, excellent supportive narrative both physically and verbally...very kind words to one another!
It's amazing how you guys handle setbacks
Boat life must be really exciting! 🌊⛵🌊
I'm not completely done watching the video but I already love it so so much 😍
So I didn't understand much of what was going on, nor with the solar panel install - but I was still fascinated and watched from beginning to end! Your vlogging is impeccable!
Good job. You bit the bullet and did it properly in the end - great resolve! I noticed a Victron Energy component, they do a small bluetooth battery monitoring module. These can be fitted across each battery or cell to check the status of each battery at a glance on your phone or laptop. They are also good for tracing faults. Great video, well done!
So..much..work...y’all are incredible!
Well done Guys, brilliant job!
Some of these scenes were giving me ASMR vibes. This looks like so much work, but I bet it felt amazing when everything worked the way you needed it to. Your videos are so well done and fascinating to watch.
That smile of accomplishment 8:00!
Great job you did both. I love your choise for the HR 35 Rasmus. I am sailing a HR too
Y’all are amazing...really! WTG guys!!
Great work beautiful finish look!!!!
Good build, thanks for the share🙏 prayers are with you all👍
Such a lovely couple, they are so happy and enthusiastic. That is hard unpleasant work installing that equipment in a confined space. It is looking more like a liveaboard, which is I suppose the whole idea. Be careful not to go out in any adverse weather, as water can come aboard easily on yachts, and it could ruin all the electrical equipment, and a knockdown in heavy seas would be disastrous. Relationships can suffer aboard small boats, probably more so than vans, so if this happens, sell the boat, stay together, and plan another adventure. Family life !!! Good luck to you both.
I just love your videos. So nice and relaxing. I feel like it a great vacation from the 9-5.
Damn... so simple and so perfect! Just love your storytelling as always! :)
Probably your best video yet
Wow.. You guys are really inspiring!!! So creative :)
Yahoo!!!! Congratulations team!!
Love from Sri Lanka❤️ HQ Contents..Love it.
This channel gets so much better with every video.
WOOOH!!!HAHAHA!! I love your enthusiasm.. you guys are so great. I'm so excited for you!!🤗❤
You guys! How on earth do you manage to do these complicated things? Well done! So proud of you!
Nicely done 👌. Great work.
I loved your ebook, if you want to, you should write another one! About boat life, or memoirs, or about whatever you want. I love your guys' journey and everything you do is interesting :)
YOU GOT THE POWWWWER! YOU GOT THIS ACCESS THE ACCESS! MCGYVERING THE FLOW& GROWth!
You guys are going to have so many stories to tell your kids in the future. Well done 👍
Love all this SO much!!!!
Some really great editing and cuts in this video!
I can only imagine what it felt like when the whole system broke down. My heart broke for you. But I feel like this was a good lesson to learn going from a tiny space (van) to a bit bigger space (boat) and adjusting to it - you guys are doing great!
More great videos. Thanks guys.
You have so much work to do and you still are creative in the shooting and editing ! I know you'r use to it now, but what a work Lou ! Good luck to the three of you !
yess i love these videos
wow! GOOD WORK !!
You guys have absolutely superhuman levels of patience and tenacity with that electrical system... I'd have given up long ago, haha!
So first lol this is amazing. I think drilling and and tape removal and vacuuming goes with asmr bc it’s so satisfying 👍🏽 love all the videos. I’m binging.
I just got the most gut drooping feeling when I saw "One week later the system broke". Great video guys! This was one of my favorites.
OMG, what a messie cable installation. 😮
Have no intentions of ever getting my own boat or indeed putting solar panel up on anything but I just enjoy your videos. :)
