THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING | Boat Life Ep. 25

- While we might have spent our first summer on the boat enjoying life as coastal cruisers, we have big dreams of becoming blue water sailors, sailing our tiny home to the far corners of the earth. And this video shows you our secret weapon to make ocean crossings possible - our Hydrovane!
The install is definitely a tricky one as we did it in the water on a mooring rather than at a dock or on land, but I think it was well worth the effort. We weren't able to find any local marinas that allowed construction, but luckily some new friends lent us their mooring in a quiet little bay with minimal swell--or so we thought!
We want to thank the team at Hydrovane hydrovane.com/ for helping us out with this incredible tool that will make our ocean crossings so much more manageable as a team of two.
Thanks so much for all your love and support on our sailing adventure! We're so grateful to have this community to share our learning process with :)
Big hugs,
Dana

Thank you friends for all the support on this video!! We are so grateful to get to share our learning process with you here whether it is doing projects on the boat or learning to sail. It feels really special that you're seeing the beginnings of this grand adventure. I know that this new addition of a Hydrovane is going to make our dream of sailing around the world so much more attainable and just want to say another thank you to the team at Hydrovane for all their support :) xxx Dana & Lou
Does Lou have a lump on the right side of his neck 15:51?
@Wild We Roam *_ Hey, was the word "PROUD" wholesale at the Library? BTW it's NOT a STEERING WHEEL .... You're on a YACHT now so call it THE HELM _*
Strange my sailing boat has a wheel to steer with.
Jacinta Whit I saw that, too! I hope everything is ok.
It is turning into a wonderful odyssey and it is great to see you learn and gain in confidence. Still the oceans await and best to make sure you have really study sea legs before getting too ambitious.
Am I the only one who usually has 0.0 idea of what they’re trying to accomplish but enjoys the videos anyway?
Maybe?
A hydrovane is a wind controlled rudder.
It makes it unnecessary to have someone at the helm all the time.
I definitely have no idea. I fell into the van life videos and am just sticking around for the new adventures!
No you're not! I came here for film photography, but stayed because they make great videos ☺️
How will you use your emergency rudder with the back stay in the way ??
get you a partner who says "okay" when you say "i did this all wrong" love you two! keep going!
Yes. I was super impressed with how cool headed Lou wad when Dana said she buttered the wring side. I wish my bf wasn't such an ass and had just 1% of Lou's class! And u saved a life. Best of luck. If near Boston ever come by Atlantis Marina in Winthrop next to East Boston and near Logan Int'l airport. We work there during boating season.
At one point everyone who has sailed around the world had only sailed 15 times, so keep on going!
Thanks, Steve! Those are some great words of encouragement :)
Aaaawww those are the sweetest words of encouragement. I pray u always stay on their team 🙏
You will learn along the way, even if you sailed out now to sail around the World. No worries.
The way you two communicate through your “mistakes” and talk to each other in general is super inspiring. Can literally feel the kindness, love and respect you have for each other radiate through my screen. You guys are just the best ❤️
"I buttered the wrong side" 😂 Dana you're so cute
So the trip to the mooring wasn't really to install Freya. It was to save another human. You guys done good.
I know you guys probably have hard days too (which may not make it on camera), but one of the things I love about these videos is how much support you give each other (and model good relationship behavior).
Thank you for wearing your life jackets . Things can go very bad very fast on the water .
Lou seems happier then ever, he is glowing, right!?
14:45 Compulsory secure installation check “That’s really on there”. When you level up to being a dad you’ll say “that’s not going anywhere”
Love you guys!
I admire the enthusiasm of both of you.i have been sailing for over 50years and I sailed all over the world mostly single handed.I love the way you tackle your projects with the attitude of "well let's have a go at that,it cannot be too hard"!!!!I wish you success in all you do.
i just really appreciate the kindness expressed between the two of you! Goodonyas...makes it a viewing pleasure, regardless of the content! Big question: who modeled this behavior for each of you? refreshing it is!
So happy you guys were in the right place at the right time for that sweet lady! Glad she is safe!
Who else had anxiety when Lou was drilling a hole in the boat!
Penelope is coming along beautifully. Wish you all the best on your adventures, lots of love from Melbourne Australia!!
Hi Patricia, nice to see a fellow Melburnian on here, I'm in the SE Suburbs, Berwick.
Aw, thank you so much watching and leaving this sweet comment 😊 big hugs to you in Melbourne!
You two are the best 💕 I don’t know why but I especially love the shots of you two tying ropes 💕
Big respect and much love. Just heard Dana say "we're soo salty these days" and it made me smile. Thank you for your life saving skills and inspirational interactions . You warm our hearts 💕
Can I just say that I really respect that you didn’t give this a stupid click-bait title like other channels would. You literally pulled someone who couldn’t breathe out of the water and there’s no ‘WE SAVED SOMEONE’S LIFE’ in the title 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Kids, you’re amazing and lovable, and your filming and editing skills are Off. The. Charts. Excellent. You could entice people to watch you shovel your driveway, rake your leaves, sail a boat, build out a van, whatever. While you’re enjoying cottage life, think about filming a documentary at some point - about something transformative to viewers of the docu. You’ve got mad, mad skills. Great work. Excited to see what’s ahead. 2021! LET’S GO!
Thankfully you all were there and no one panicked
Oh and how could I ever forget to mention... 👏 👏 👏 you two literally saved a life! Literally! Bravo, well done you two! ♥️ God bless both of you, Penelope and even the dingy!
It really was such a crazy day! So happy that we were in the right place at the right time to help her to saftey :) And also thank you for your kind comment Kami!
Just for reference, when you say "pipe" the size refers to a nominal ID. If you say "tubing" then it is OD. This basically the same for hose, vs tubing...Hope it helps in the future...Looked straight on camera !! Good job
This is one of the most helpful comments I've ever read on UA-cam! Thank you for sharing :)
My same thought. The measurements are usually inside diameter-at least in my experience.
Wow just learned something new. Thanks
That is a very valuable tip! Thanks so much for taking the time to share this with us!! :)
@@WildWeRoam To confuse you more, Schedule 40 pipe size refers to nominal ID. Schedule 80 pipe will have the same OD as the same "size" in schedule 40, but with a thicker wall.
As an example:
4" sched 40 is 4.5" OD x ~0.25" wall, so 4" ID
4" sched 80 is 4.5" OD x ~0.33" wall, so 3.84" ID
Bloody ridiculous, is what it is. :D
Can you please drop that muffin recipe!! It looks insane
Honestly I just have to say Dana is so empowering. She makes me feel like I can do anything! Happy to see a lady getting in there doing all those jobs with confidence :)
Congrats on your new crew member.
There is a reason why the windvane has been around for a thousand years. It's simple, yet does the job with spot on accuracy. It will definitely be a life changer!! Job well done
You guys ROCK! Thank you for showing us the nitty gritty. The genuine emotion comes out in everything you do. Hooked for life. See you on the water sometime.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Cptn Happy!! We really apprecite the kindness and encouragement :) Happy sailing!
I really enjoy your videos so much and the effort you put in them is amazing! This 35 min long video really made my day!
I think you guys are trying to get sponsored by a vacuum company :)
Mads from Sail Life got a free shop vac from Bosch in a sponsorship deal.
every video should be 36 minutes long!! this was such a treat!!
also I never have the slightest clue what all these boat terms mean, but I love watching you both anyway 💜
Tie extra pins somewhere near by, so if one fails, you can quickly in the dark and rain replace it. Check the nuts on critical bolt connections, or use a torque wrench (better). It was great seeing you both work together (respect) - never lose that, it will keep you safe and together.
Saved a life 👍 You guys are off to a good start. We'll done.⛵
This, is my dream! A respectful partner, the ocean, and new adventures. So happy to see tou guys accomplish so much. Following since the beginning from Quebec, Canada ! :)
What a clever & thoughtful idea. You kids own a tremendous amount of grit. I’m glad I found you, to watch your journey! 🤍 Your future selves will be so grateful for the adventures.
I always feel good after one of your videos. Thank you
Nice one guys. Have you thought about converting a section of your aftcabin into a workshop? That way all your tools and parts are in one place. You could set up a workbench with power and a vice. The other advantage is you don't then make a mess in your living quarters.
Wow, Jonathan, that is a great idea!! Thanks so much for taking the time to share that with us :)
@@WildWeRoam for at least investigate for a small little vice and clamps. This wood could have been carved in 10 minutes. A chisel and a mallet.
I made another identical cockpit table out of basic plywood. When I am doing projects I use that one instead of our nice one. I can drill into it and clamp my small vise on it and I don't care about damage. Grease, oil, paint, varnish, whatever...it gets stained but who cares? It is a work bench.
When it gets too beat up eventually I'll trace it on to a new piece of plywood, and cut it out with the jigsaw on the old table as the last project it has to endure.
Nice! I see the joy a table and seat brings. It is the small things. Cheers you two.
Hi You two that was absolutely great, I fitted my hydrovane 10 years ago in Jersey uk. but backed up against the pontoon doing it while on a mooring excellent and nothing went to the bottom, or if it did you didn't show it considering you videoed it all amazing, i did mine on my own but at least I had a firm base to work from. It took me a few trips out to get mine steering ok but it was quite an old one when I bought it. Trimming the sails so that the boat sails herself seems to be the answer to steady course keeping, i use mine for longish passages and local even tacking, once I learnt which line to pull to turn the right way. I hope you have a great time sailing with it. xxMike
Good job, guys! I love the kindness between you too. Can you talk more about how to have a a great relationship while being around each other all the time? That would be very helpful ❤️
I am binging your boat life series and I feel so excited for the next each time! It feels like I just discovered van life all those years ago and you two really sparked my interest in this new alternative living
Superb positivity is your greatest tool , what an adventure and thanks for letting us aboard ..x
Awesome job saving that lady GOD bless you guys, Oh and great job on the Hydrovane install happy sailing.
Next time your on the hard get a 3/4 12” x 20” piece of marine plywood makes a perfect work table. Screw scrap piece of wood for a cleat to clamp to. Make a hole or two so you can tie it down to top of tool box or seat, a piece of carpet foam keeps from moving or scratching surfaces. Make canvas bags to put tools into that you can oil and prevent rust.
Such a joy to watch your adventures.
Wow guys your videos continue to grow with you. Great music and cuts 🥰
You both are heroes. Your determination is steadfast. All your hard work has paid off! Well done! Love to you always! XO!
Yesss always look forward to this! keep dreaming, you'll get there, i know it
So happy to see a new video from you!
You should be proud: nothing comes easy on a boat. There's always a devil in a detail ready to strike when least you expect it. Amazing job. I am so impressed that you both celebrate the steps along the way. Too much of life can be spent looking forward or backward but you genuinely appear to live in the moment and that is where the journey is. Also, so impressed that you always wear your lifejackets/harnesses when sailing. Two people on a boat is one person on a boat. If one falls over the edge the chances of survival and single handed rescue are infinitesimal - especially without a lifejacket. The lady you rescued has probably doesn't even appreciate fully her luck.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this lovely message, Black Duck! We really appreciate your kind words :)
This is so wholesome. Great project, positive vibes, AND you helped that lady so much you guys are the best 🤗
You guys saved a life and then business as usual 🥰 love how humble you two are, it's refreshing.
You two are very refreshing and down to earth! Thanks for sharing and taking us along!
Yay, y’all are doing a fabulous job of learning something new! Be free and courageous in your journey to sail around the world!!
most beautiful baking transition ever
Love it how your both so supportive of each other, and always proud of each achievement!!
Hey guys - you may wish to put some thickened epoxy in any holes you drill in the boat, otherwise the core could start rotting and fiberglass delamination. Also consider painting the raw wood backing plate with a coat of epoxy to make it have more longevity. Just my two cents. :-)
This made me smile. So happy for and proud of you two! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
So good to watch. well done guys. Feeling good!
WOOHOO!!! You guys are awesome, and did such a great job with the install!! And on a mooring ball too... major props! The fit is nothing short of perfect. We know for sure that she is already looking forward to steering you many miles xx Sarah & Will
Great job you 2 you can see your confidence growing with everything you do. You always take your time and plan whatever you’re going to do. Keep it up stay safe steve
You might think about using the aft cabin as a workshop. You could build a small bench and mount a vise. Tool storage could be built in.
So glad you were in the right place at the right time saving the lady...great job installing the vain..❤
You are a great team! Well done guys.
You two are a great couple.
You are both so wholesome it's so empowering! You guys rock!! Dreaming of my own boat life
Fluid/Air carrying pipes are measured by Interior Diameter (ID) and not Outside Diameter (OD). Most structural piping like stainless steel or aluminum arches are measured by OD and wall thickness.
Thanks for the info! Learning every day :)
Lou and Dania, your doing so well. Your getting so good at manoeuvre in the boat in the rough waters. I'm so proud of you both and you should be too. 😁👍
You guys inspire me so much! 🤗 Every time I watch y'all, I feel encouraged to sail myself. Hopefully within the next 10 years for sure!.. To sail the world is the goal! ⛵🗺🧭
the way you guys handle stress seems so healthy - full of patience and compassion.
Great job on helping a fellow boaty in need and the install 👍
Great vlog guys great work you both look so happy all the time on your tiny home 👍🏴👍
I love your videos! Keep them coming! All the best to you guys and your new home!
Congratulations to the happy team!
Amazing act of kindness
No offence but I think for sailors at sea the number one priority is to help someone drowning that comes before anything else. An ‘ act of kindness ‘ is patting a dog on the head . . . . . .
This is great!! Living the dream
Amazing job you guys! Such a joy to watch you both kicking goals time and time again :) Been watching you guys for over a year now and loving your videos more and more every time! Keep it up, Big love from Australia x
Yes . . my hydrovane changed everything. A beast to install by so sweet when it is steering
Love watching your videos. You two are a great pair. Penelope is beautiful! So happy your project turned out to be so fruitful! ⛵️
Thank you so much, Kami!! Really, we are so grateful for the love and support :)
uPVC pipe was first marketed as a replacement for wrought iron water (and waste) pipe usually galvanised. nominally measured internally, with a bit of leeway for pipe wall thickness. 2" gal may measure 2 3/8" external so the plastic equivalent is sized similar. Market forces at play. Keep up the good work.
Your #captioning skills are spot on! Adding the music lyrics...BONUS! Mahalo for that. Great job on the install of Freya!
Glad you appreciate it!! And thanks so much for sharing the kind words :)
@@WildWeRoam we agree we also loved the lyrics they choose
Guys, your storytelling, composition and edit is spot on. The effort is immense but makes great viewing. I love it
You guys are just good people, man. Love watching your channel!
Aw, thanks Deena!! That is such a sweet thing to say :) Thanks for your love and support!!
i love the longer video! i know it’s not possible every week but i love y’all! best wishes
Welcome aboard FREYA !! .. Another great job :)
Great job guys, well done and a resue in there to boot.
Brilliant work you guys! And life saving too! Well done!! x
Kudos, 👍🏾👌🏾🤘🏾🤗🦋 you did that. Woo Hoo. Sooo Proud of you. You Rule!!!
Yes 36 minutes I love watching you guys 💖💖💖 blessings from Wisconsin
❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰
I haven’t watched for a while you guys are so tan! Always love your videos
Today you got the most important piece of any cruisers equipment. Congrats!
Hey, very important. I don't know the young man's name, but at 14:13, it's noticeable a nodule on his neck that seems to be a cyst. It's in his interest to go to a doctor to observe it, it could be malignant.
I noticed the same thing. I’ve been watching these two for so long I feel like I know them. I find myself worrying about their well being. He should definitely check the small lump on his neck.
Nice work. You two make a good team. 😎
Great job guys and great film as always!!!! x
MUFFIN RECIPE!
Yes! XD I need it!
As Always ,Huge Love from Sri Lanka! Love the Content
Hi! I really love your boat videos but don’t know too much about boats lol. Could you explain the mechanics of your new addition? How does it keep a big boat in a straight line on a windy course? Sounds like magic to me
Awesome fit out guys job well done great vlog stay safe ooooo and well done in safely getting that girl out the water sending ❤️❤️🏴
That was surprisingly interesting and a well edited video. The rescue was a sailing reality check and so glad you could help 😊. You two are darling!
happy to follow your adventures :)
