Wow, right when you think things are looking up, another problem surfaces!! This one really brings me back to the pre-boat launch struggle. It felt like we were doing everything we could to get this boat in the water, but the universe had other plans.
While at first we were overwhelmed with the melting wires, the whole project actually ended up teaching us a lot about wiring, how the engine works, and hopefully, we're better off now than we were when we started filming this one!
Big hugs,
Dana

A little advice from a journeyman diesel mechanic.
Stop screwing in every screw with the drill. Especially into fiberglass and/or wood. I saw this in a previous episode and I saw this in this episode with the Yanmar engine panel. You’ll end up stripping out holes. Get them close and finish by hand with a screw driver.
Also when replacing individual wires or complete harnesses remember that you can use the old wire or harness (with some electrical tape) to pull the new harness through holes and conduits.
It also can really help to leave the old harness connected and lay out the new harness along side on the engine and in the gauge panels. This helps with proper routing and landing the final connections.
Make sure to install a new rubber impeller into you raw water cooling pump before putting to sea. When you buy it also by at least a few extra impellers. Always have extra impellers on board.
Change your fuel filters and change your engine oil and oil filters before putting to sea. Always have at least a few spare fuel filters (because they tend to clog up) and at least one spare oil filter and enough oil to do an oil change.
Make sure to run a diesel fungicide to prevent algae in your diesel tank. Put this in at every fill up. If your boat has been sitting for a number of years then this is good possibility. Ask the ship yard if they have anyone the can do “fuel polishing”. Which is basically filtering the heck out of your existing fuel. Diesel doesn’t go bad it’s just can need filtering to remove water, solids and algae.
Cheers,
Jeremy

I hope they read this!
@@malp6280 So what? They're being funded by (younger people I imagine). Young people want to see young people succeed and try their hand at something that requires skill and learning and motivation. Not like other youtubers who have buried their heads in slime, burning shit, buying shit.
Do not use fungicide or biocide. Just change your filters on schedule. If your fuel is corrupted, recycle it, clean the tank and refill.
poche12651 it’s always a problem in boat that sit or travel. To many contaminated fuel sources. Docks with water in their tanks and such.
I always use a biocide. The diesel fuel doesn’t go bad. Treat the tank and let it sit furva day or two. Remove fuel with a pump that will filter/separate water/polish. Clean tank and put the treated fuel back in.
Put appropriate amount of biocide in at every fill up to prevent future issues when you get a slug of algae from a dirty marina tank.
True nice thing about a boat is it moves a lot. So you can wait until after you top off when you know how much fuel you’ve put in. So you can use the correct amount of biocide for a maintenance dose.
@@malp6280 "Taking advantage and using ppl to have a free life"? No. This couple and countless others are producing free content on UA-cam, which has both entertainment and educational value, again, free, where fans can opt-in and support them directly through micropayments. We've been over-paying for $13 movie tickets and $200/mo cable TV. Ever go through 100 channels and it's all garbage? We're paying for that and we've been robbed. We now live in a new world, a new era. Much better! You can learn just about anything online, discover anything, educate, and train yourself on any subject for free. Then you can support that educator or entertainer by paying them a couple of bucks. C'mon man. This is the greatest opportunity if there ever was one. Anyone can produce educational or entertainment content showing off their lives or talents. The opportunity to do this has never existed before. This is a great thing. A great era. What is your specialty? What can you offer the world and teach to others online? Does it have value? ASk for donations and make a living online doing it would be the ultimate job.
Producing video content on a weekly basis is at least 30+ hrs a week of filming and editing. This is legitimate work. If it sucks, you fail. This couple is not failing. They are winning. It's also a crowded space with an enormous amount of competition. UA-camrs are actors and develop shows in the first person, in real-life. It's show business and it's all very real, which is the attraction. It has exceptional value. The positive and helpful comments are also free, so we learn from professionals and experts adding to the content, which is a huge added value and educational. Furthermore, these content providers release their work *for free*. Fans and viewers (like you) don't pay anything for the price of admission. Perhaps your bitterness would be better directed at over-paid athletes making $17M a year to hit, kick or carry a ball. Or corporations offshoring $2T in tax revenues, not a young couple living their dream and making a couple grand a month while enjoying their lives to the fullest. Peace.
I'm sure it's daunting to go back through months of video to put together these episodes for us, but I am thoroughly enjoying them. As a former sailboat owner (twice) and current self-built campervan owner, it's been exciting seeing you take your nomad life to the seas. Fair winds and following seas!
Thank you so much Dave!! Lou pours so many hours into these edits and this one was definitely a beast with 100's of hours of footage, but I am still in awe of how he's able to transform our life into these videos. Feel so lucky to be his wife and partner in life :) Can't wait to share more adventures with you from the water soon! - Dana
So excited to see you guys on the water!!
I second that ✋!
Aye.. I did wonder about that. Unless you know the full service history it is always going to be a challenge to know what is good and what is substandard. Wiring is one of those things that you need to be check, be rechecked and then checked again. Last thing you want in the middle of a storm is for things to short out and you are left with no lights no communcation and no navigaton. Lessons learned though. Take some spare wires though, never know when you might need them.
Thanks for carrying us with you on your journey of discovery. You have a wonderful way of making me feel excited for and with you about even though I am not there. Keep sharing!
Just joined your channel at the swap from van life to buying a boat. What an amazing journey and definitely going to look into your book. Now watching these back episodes. You are speaking my language, well done Lou
Me coming to check out your channel after a while: Engine almost burning? No wonder. Their van was really old.... What was the name of the van? I don't remem.....

Thanks so much Maurice!! It feels so incredible to finally be living on the water and living out this boat life dream :) - Dana
Experience is about making mistakes and learning from them, then moving forward. I never met anyone that knew everything from birth, but I have met a few that thought they did!
Every time i watch a video of your i cry with you. Either from frustration or just pure happiness. You are such genuine and honest people, that i cant help myself, but love you for who you are. Many many greetings from Bulgaria.

Bless your hearts-trial by fire..literally 😢 but you came back swingin!
Congratulations ! Does the boat have a name? Bon voyage ! Can't wait to see the christening ! So happy for you all.
The boat is called Penelope :)
Yalls videos could be about literally anything and I would still watch them. Couple goals 😍
Such an emotional roller coaster!
What a great mechanic is Lou👍
AHHHH So exciting !!
If you are going to do wiring like that when so much money is at stake really need to invest in a proper ratchet crimping tool and a decent automatic wire stripper. Stripping wires with side cutters often cuts wires and damages then and bad crimp connectors using budget crimpers causes loads of problems. On passage the last thing you need is an electrical fire or the engine cut out at the wrong time.
They clearly don’t know enough to know that they don’t know enough. Clearly it’s going to be a horror story on the water.
Now that you've been on the water since end of June, we're all hoping & keeping fingers crossed that will hear from you more often. Love your content!
Thanks so much for watching Lisa!! It's been a really hectic and crazy year for us, but it feels so nice to sit down and finally read through the comments. Feel so grateful for this community :) - Dana
Gosh, electrical scares me, y’all are so brave and I’m SO glad you got a professional to double check it 😆 I’m so impressed by your incredible hard work! Dana’s emotional time got me 😭😭😭🥰
This video made me cry on so many fronts. Reminded me when our engine wouldn't work on Whirlwind for lack of a new $2 gasket (who knew) and all the times we got towed back because the engine wasn't working right. Held my breath as you started the engine each time as I watched the video. Hats off to whole team and special shout out to Lou.... what you have learned about marine engines is staggering!!!! Can't wait for the next video. Love you guys
Can’t wait till your next vid!
So excited for you. Xx
You guys have the best channel
I can't wait to see the next episode!
My behind me neighbors bought a new boat years ago and on it's first voyage, they had a fire. They hopped in their escape raft and filmed their boat burning up. Soooooo it is a very good thing that you rewired your boat, before putting it in the water.
Finally! Every time i finish your video, I cant wait for the nexttt! Hoping to see more videos from you guys as soon as you start travelling
can’t wait to see y’all in the water
The fact through all of this, selfishly they donated they entire months proceed to support injustices in the world. These is the type of people I’ll always support.
I think you meant 'selflessly'
Gosh, I remember just yesterday you were building your van with a donkey and a dog.
Pretty crazy what can happen in just a few years! Feel like each experience has been the perfect building block to get us ready for the next chapter :) thanks so much for sharing all the adventures with us - Dana
Aaawww best comment 🏆
It seems like yesterday to us tooo
Hola Marineros ! Good job but don’ forget the fuse. The more the better :)
Ребята вы крутые! Восхищаюсь вами!)
"Are you nervous?! =D" "...No."
Haha, you guys rock! Can't wait to see how your story continues =)
Great video as usual
I love your videos. Glad you're almost floating. Wish for longer episodes. What are the plans for the sailing season?
Omg I can’t even watch Lou in that small space. My claustrophobia is nuts from over here.
I watch your each and everyvideo
Lots of work initially but it’ll be soo worth it!! We’re in the process of converting our van into a camper! Boat life is next level though! 😁
Hi, I have seen your videos, just when you sold your van and finished your ebook to buy the sailboat. I have been following you ever since and I love all your videos. You as a couple look very good together. I love that both share the job almost equally and work for the same goal putting as much work as needed. Wish you all the best and that you can fulfill your water dreams. If I may add one thing, just as a suggestion. You should get a heat gun for all the connecting proyects, it will make your work connecting and water proofing your connections much easier. Best of luck to you all and enjoy life to the fullest.
I have literally been checking y'alls page every day for an upload, yayyy😭😭😭❤❤
Saaaaame
They typically post on Tuesday’s
Eli Czaplinski oh sorry, I waited *all day
Bravo.
Enjoyed. 👍😉
Compliments!! Good job, ready for sea adventure :-)
I love to see how sentimental Dana is. I'd love to meet a girl like her, someone who joins me to my adventures in the water...
They never actually found out WHY the wiring harness was overheating. They just replaced it with a new one.
Love the barefoot shoes 😍
You are doing such a great job with the boat!
Make sure there's an appropriate fuse or breaker in that circuit so that this can't happen again.
Craig Overend the first step would have been to find out why it burned. They clearly have no idea.
Lovee from india would love to meet you guyss 💓 you make just asome videos
Good for you 🥱
I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for someone I don’t know 😂
You were so calm about burning wires..😳 It could've ignited the boat in seconds!!
Short video this week. Looking forward to watching the adventure.
oh good lord im so worried for Lou's back in all of this!
yay
I hate engine problems! Our new boat (a relative of Hallberg Rassy called Vindö) had two engine problems on our first two voyages. I know it happens but as your reaction shows, the tension gets overwhelming when you just. Want. TO SAIL.
Please have the dates in your videos! It’s good to know how long ago it was!
Splish splash...get that boat in the water 💧 wiring harnesses can be a nightmare. I did auto technician as my career for awhile. Looks like you nailed that one.
Until our adventures cross, fair winds and full sails ⛵
LOUs back i kept praying the whole time that de dednt throw it out again
I am so exited for you guy's ! Please upload the next vlog soon !
If you ever come trough the Netherlands hit me up, cause i'm a brigde keeper in Haarlem and in the area. I highly recommend the 'staande mast route' It's a route trough Amsterdam and another big part of the Netherlands, really cool. I work at some bridges too on that route :D Could be some really awesome content there ;)
Stay safe - Tanja
Being new to the channel I don't know if you went through a full service on the engine and drive? All oil, filters and belts should be changed. There is a list of spares that should be carried; alternator, starter, water pump, belts, filters etc. that you have to have to run the engine. Your shake down sailing will tell you what to carry before you go serious blue water. I would also cut off the plugs of the old harness to keep as spares. Good luck, it looks like a grand adventure!
Admire the way you handle the setbacks - tho I imagine there's a bit of swearing to begin with!
❣️❣️❣️
🥰🥰🥰
What!? You didn't give us a sneak peak of the boat in water?
That engine sounds like the starter motor is getting stuck on. It shouldn’t be rattling like that.
Im_only_in_it_for_the_ Money looked to me like he was holding the key in the start position too long. That grinds my gears as well as the starter 😁
@@HandyC you are right, he did hold the starter for too long, but I agree with @Im_only_in_it_for_the_ Money that it sounds like the starter motor is sticking. I would have that checked before leaving port.
trouble shooting and good friends....the glass is half full....soooo, there must be a bottle of wine somewhere around here!!!!
So what was the problem with the wire harness? A short? Did you fix it? You’re leaving us hangin.
Working on boat engines causes the most uncomfortable position. But great job on all the wiring, many save voyages to come!
So why did the loom short out then?
old?
Gremlins ;) Sometimes, like Jeremy says, just being old is an issue, by increasing the resistance in the cables and together with bad (earth) connections increases the current and melt the cables.
Van Geezer when you have a bad connection it usually melts/ gets hot at that specific location. When the entire wire has melted then it's a short circuit. I wanted to know if they inspected the loom, maybe found chaffing through vibration or something as that simply does not happen from just being "old". It has all the hallmarks of either being connected wrong or a dead short somewhere along its length.
The video seems to suggest they just bought a new loom and "hoped for the best" but I am sure that was not the case. All we currently know is they got a guy in to inspect at least) I would have liked to heard the cause that's all. 👍🏼
@@HandyC Yeah, that would have been a great info. Don't think they really found out though. I had the same problem on my old motorcycle last year. "Gremlins" did play a role. No shortcut anywhere and still the cables slowly melted (due to increase in resistance). I cleaned all the earth connections from corrosion/verdigris and changed the looms and voila - back in business.
When I opened up the old looms they too were fully loaded with corrosion/verdigris. The bike had been garaged every winter in a cold - somewhat damp storage - every year before I bought it.
@@HandyC you comments about connections and wire fires is very valid BUT... The guy who inspected... is the Manager of a Yanmar dealer and we install several new Yanmars every year. So he is a guy who has been to Yanmar school annually for decades, worked on Yanmars for decades, one of the most amazing mechanics I have ever worked with, and he found multiple issues in the panel and harness that may have been caused by a plethora of issues. Moisture, chafe, old connections, and possible new equipment...and others. The replacement of systems was his call due to the age of the stuff and time constraints. (the system is no longer in production, it is not just sitting on a shelf). They didn't hope for the best...they followed very sound advice from an industry leader. Hope that didn't spoil it for you. Lou and Dana have done a great job. cheers
I LIKE BOATS!
Engine? RTFM. Save Life. Rewire correct. Save life.
Everyone is equal under the law. EJI promote special treatment for some.
Disconnect those crimp connectors and solder then shrink wrap them all!! Those connectors are just installing problems.
!!!!!
Hey penelope be nice to Lou!
Nice tattoo
Don't get stuck with your wedding ring during your repair work. You rarely see mechanics wearing a ring..just a tip
"...like....like....like....like......................like...."
Why is your videos getting shorter and shorter everytime. I wait for an entire week to see your video and all I get is just 10 mins of you guys ? Come on guys !
9 minutes only >.
