Thank you so much for this tutorial. The way I used a screwdriver as a key and got that place worked perfectly on my 2002 Jetta GLS. But the programming itself didn't work on the way you showed. I went VW's website and found an instruction to program the key fob. Instead of holding the key on the door for 10 seconds I locked and unlocked, then pressed the unlock key(the car honked) and that was it. So guys! If it doesn't work on your vehicle try other methods. I'm super glad I fixed my key fob thanks to the author. It was way easy to remove that part from the door and fix it. Thanks!
THIS WORKED! my other car was sat in the garage for months as my key barrels were all seized and screwed and the mechanic (my long time friend and neighbour) genuinely thought the only way to get it fixed was to change all the locks and keys and get them reprogrammed which would be £££s! this took all of 10 seconds!!!!

Great tutorial! This also works with only one key fob in the ignition lock, ie. if you have no valet key and are replacing the fob part on your only key. Mine didn't honk when turning the screwdriver, it honked after I had pressed the new fob in the ignition lock a few seconds. I pressed one of the buttons a second time after it honked, and it works now.
Awesome. Glad it helped. A couple other people said the same thing- that it didn’t honk right away but did with the press of the button. Weird, but as long as it programs. 👍🏼
Excellent tutorial! My wife's 2k Beetle (UK) has only one key, so got a fob from ebay. My problem is the driver's door has a dodgy solder joint on lock, so I tried it passenger side and it works!! Mine chirped after pressing the new fob the 2nd time. Thanks again, very helpful
Good observation for me the way it works is the same but i just make the copy of the key put it without pull the cylinder key and i twisted to the left 5 or 10 seconds and 5 or 10 seconds to the right...until the car beeps ..also works on audi models when you change your battery got disable..so is easy to do it..i haven't done this way..great tip..
Great video. Thank you for pointing out the difference between the beetle lock fix point and golf lock fix point and the importance of not dropping screw (neat trick btw) worked first time for me and perfect as I only have one key.. 💯 % kudos & many thanks
Thanks for the kudos. I don't do many tutorials so it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that it's helped so many people. I wish I didn't sell the car. :( I miss it and every comment reminds me that I do.
I have a 2001 Passat that I've been sweating having only one key to it since buying the car 5 years ago. This video has made my day, EBay, here I come!
Duuuude!!! I was about to pay $500 for a dealer to order and program a FOB for me until I found this vid. All I had was the valet key. Ordered a $24.00 FOB on Amazon and with the help of your video programmed it myself. You are a VW hero!!! 🦸♂️
Good tutorial! Note: you don't need to pry that lock with a screwdriver jusr use your key in the lock and gently wiggle it out then pry it to spare the paint on the door. And please remember folks not all key fobs teachable to the car. It depends what type of part number the key has. It has to match with the car's comfort module.
Geripappa true. Didn’t think of walking it out with the key. Good call. And you’re right about the fob. I’ve had a lot of people ask me about their fobs not working. Match that part number for sure.

VW Golf 4 1.9 TDI 1999 doors5. The way it WORKED for me is like this: I have 2 keys, for X reason both of them stopped working, i bought new batteries but didn't work , i tried many methods to reprogram but didn't work, and at the last moment i found out that My drivers side door didn't open all doors when i use the key, but the opposite door of driver whenever i try to unlock it activated my 6 car signals(and opened all doors) same like the key fobs, so i closed THAT door with key and kept the key turned closed, and i click the Open button on the other key and the door immediately tried to OPEN, than i did the same with other key by swapping them, try this it worked so easy for me and i thought this might help cause i waste whole day trying to find the solution. I don't know if it works with just one key because i already made them work try but by keeping the key turn closed and by clicking the button on that same key might do the trick. Good luck :)
Does this also work for programming the key to start the car? Or are additional steps needed? I have an 03 Jetta and I don't like just having one working key.
CrossoverKen no it only programs the fob portion for the locks and panic. You’d still need to program the immobilizer (the chip) at a dealer or use a vagcom or something.
This video helped me alot, not in the way I hoped it would but it fixed another issue I didn't even knew until now it existed :D. Both switches of the electric lock system on the driver's door are broken, they make the "click" sound but nothing happenes so ironically, I can't enter the programming mode. Both keys needs to be Programmed, but before that I need to replace the switches (hopefully not the lock itself), I can still close all door on the back. But, yeah, TY for the tutorial tho
Awesome! I'm super glad I made this video. I couldn't find a good tutorial so I thought I would make one so people wouldn't have to do as much homework as I did but I'm glad it helped you. Thanks for watching.
2002 WV Jetta 1.9 TDI...tried this procedure a few times....No luck, but, me and anything electronic never have gotten along very well to start off with ! Great video...Thanks. LIKED/SUBSCRIBED !
Well bummer. Sorry it didn’t work. Ive heard it has worked on some years and models that I was a little surprised to hear but I’ve also heard a few people say that it hasn’t worked on models awfully similar. Yours for example is the same year even. Both are mk4s and both 2002 to boot so that’s super weird. Oh well I guess. Thanks for the sub!! That helps me out a ton.
Screww Googlle dang that’s super weird. It’s worked for so many people. Many were the same year. Sorry about the bad luck. Thanks for trying so we all know. Maybe it doesn’t work for all of them.
This is not working on my mk4 golf .. Idk if it is because my new fob is used and programmed to another car.. Or because the fob isn't compatable? Because there is 3 diffrent fobs there the one with the metal blue and white logo which is the old one.. There is the 2 newer ones that have the black and silver plastic logo.. But from those 2 the first version still comes apart easy like the old fob and the 2nd version is hard to take apart because it has locking pins and that's the one I have?????
thanks for this... I thought I had a bad battery out of package... put a volt meter on it and then became perplexed as it was over 3 volts... so on a lark I searched for programming keyfob for my TDI... Cheers!
I may have spoke too soon - I assumed it would work - gave it a try... followed directions exactly. No joy. Does this indicate that maybe the battery is not making a good connection? I tested the battery with a volt meter and it's 3+ volts. My car has never been able to lock the driver's door with the key fob. I used vag com to program my fob to roll all 4 windows up/down. I had to get out of car, roll windows down and hit the door lock rocker switch by reaching inside the car... then use my fob to roll up windows. I've lived with this for many years and has been fine. My key fob just stopped working yesterday and I bought new battery tonight... watched your video and thought I would solve my problem... any ideas?
Jake Robinson shoot I don’t know. If it was already programmed I would assume just a new battery wouldn’t unprogram the fob. Dumb as it sounds check the fob to see if it is lighting up when you hit the buttons. Maybe the battery didn’t go in quite right or make a good connection.
Sam Bartonns glad it helped. Makes it worth doing the video ya know? If you want to subscribe I have some more tips and tricks I need to get posted. No hard feelings if you don’t but it helps me out if you do want some.
TheGrimriftstalker AWESOME! I'm glad it helped. All I could find when I was in your situation was piss poor half tutorials and "this may work" sort of things so I had to make one for other people that were looking for one. I can't promise it was done well but it works. :)
I have my original remote key but got missing little bulb and battery , so I brought it fob case with new battery and bulb so , I used the battery and bulb in my original fob key and is lighting but not opening or looking car apart from manually. please any idea help ! many thanks .
Are there any model years that this won't work on? We bought a replacement fob/key for a 2015 Jetta SE TSI when our son lost the spare, thinking we could just get an auto locksmith to program it for us (not a dealer as they charge too much and usually want you to buy a fob from them) but every locksmith we called said they could only program up to year 2014.
That’s great to hear! I’ve got a couple other little vw tips and tricks videos if you wanna subscribe. No pressure though. Thanks again for the feedback.
Psycho Rider if it’s the same style it would. In the video the fob is from a Jetta but I used it in a golf. I don’t know about the Renault. I don’t know a lot about them. They’re not a vw product are they?
@@Phatphatyo no they are not, so it must be a vw product remote to work ? if yes, where i can buy it ? and one more question, will it work if i do this in a passenger seat doors ?
Psycho Rider I would imagine so, yes. Under rare circumstance maybe an Audi fob or something would work but even then I doubt it. It’s got to emit the right frequencies. I got mine from an old car but you can buy them from people used or get one online or from a dealer. I got one for my mk6 gti on eBay.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful! Feel free to subscribe if you’d like. I have a few videos I need to get uploaded. No pressure but it helps me out (and if you do want to see more).
Mr Rees yeah unless the button went bad- this video shows you how. Except you’ll want to program the same fob instead of a different one. I’d unlock works but lock doesn’t you may have a problem with the fob itself. Give it a shot. Only takes 5 min but if it doesn’t work then it will tell you that it’s the fob that’s bad. You can always buy another and just swap the blades out.
AWESOME! Glad to see its saving people some money. I had to do some looking around and found bits and pieces of stuff from each site and put together a good tutorial cause I couldn't find a really good one.
Worked great, thank you! I did run into problems with the Trunk release button however. Lock/Unlock/Panic programmed but trunk does nothing. But the LED on the replacement fob flashes red for the Trunk button and the other fob original to the car can pop the trunk ok. It just... sends the command wrong somehow? Idk how Lock/Unlock could work but not trunk.
I’ve tried this on my 2002 1.6 SE on both locks and unlocking and locking and had no joy but I’ve only got a spare key so I don’t even know if it originally came with a fob, is there a way I could check ?
Josh T I’m not sure how to tell if it had a fob. I would think that 2002 would have. This car is a 2002 and it had them. For what it’s worth though I used the spare key in the video. The fob shown isn’t the original. It only had the spare when I bought it.
this is really good for me. i changed over my key blade, transponder chip and the circuit board into a new housing and the remote locking hasnt worked since. im hoping this will fix it
I got two different Keys one to start the engine and one to open the trunk and I just got a new remote I wanted to program it to my car what is work cuz both of my front doors are messed up I was trying to use the same method but with the trunk lock
Nice and clear video, unfortunately I am in a situation where I lost my only one Key FOB for my VW 2000 MK4 GTI, all I have is the valet key, the car is locked and when I open with the valet key the and try to start the alarm goes off. Any suggestions. Thx in advance.
@@Phatphatyo hello sorry I stay incorrected, tried the valet key to start the car started no issues, but it alarmed for 45 seconds and then the alarm went off, drove the car for 10-12 miles no issues. Its just that when I shut the car the alarm went off again and then stopped after 45 seconds or so. I guess I will order a key and program it. Many Thanks
@@Phatphatyo thanks you. Well after all the trouble of figuring out the key remote issue my Key Fob that I lost was found and was turned into my local police department and I had Posed on FB on my town community page and a good citizen found it. But I ordered the 2 key fobs and I will program it based on you video tutorial. Thanks again.
FANTASTIC! Thank you for posting this! I have a MK1 TT same as MK4 GTI and I have one key with broken fob and want to add a second fob. This programming would be exactly what I will be doing. I will let you know if it worked on the TT>
Yeah let me know. I’ve seen a lot of posts now from everybody with different rigs but I haven’t seen anyone say it worked on a TT. I bet it would though. A lot of Audi people say that it worked. Obviously mostly A and S series of course but never heard about a TT. Let us know.
Nice work well done! My Issue is that I have lost orginal key and i need to buy new one. The driver door key stuck in drivers door lock so even with new key it is not going to turn left or right respectivly close or open. I just wonder what do i need to do to fix the door lock before programing a new key
I first did it on an 02 impala. Just did it yesterday on a 2010 mustang. I'm not sure about Volkswagen though because I've seen quite a few people doing it the way you did here
Oh yeah in a lot of the GM products that’s how you did it before they went to the setting in the DIC display. I’m not sure about the fords back then. These I don’t think it works that way. Not 100% on it though I guess.
@@Phatphatyo nope I can't get it to work. I knew it wouldn't....stuff like this never does work for me. Now my car won't lock or unlock using the key manually. I didn't have to take out the lock barrel as I have my spare key.
I have a problem with my car at the moment not driven it for 2 weeks and it now sounds like a racing car, not sure if it’s the exhaust or the fact I’ve not driven it, plus my alarm keeps going off same model golf mk4
All I did was change the battery so do I do this the same way you’ve shown because I only have the one key fob and that’s it and all I did was change the battery please help me
Charles Corbin changing a battery usually doesn’t un-program it but I’ve heard of it happening. This should fix it though, yes, because it programs it again.
did work, using your and another video and another comment below, so many ways and details how to do it uhh, 2hours work with searching, trying and did it
Great video.. it worked on my 2010 Jetta mk4.5 (latinamerican version of Jetta mk4) the only issue i had is with the trunk button "doesn´t work" only locks and unlock the doors! do u have the same issue?
It only programs the fob though not the RFID I'm still trying to figure that one out without taking it to a dealer or locksmith. I'm going to try the 3 - 10 minute thing and see if that does it
Please let us know if you were able to program the replacement key so it will actually start the vehicle. Programming the FOB itself is the easy part. A replacement ignition key (RFID) might still require a VW dealer.
hey great video, but i just wanted to ask, if you did order a new blade on the key fob you wanted to start using. would the blade work once the car has learned the new key fob. thanks
zvkeria yeah it would have. I didn’t, no. I left the key in the ignition. Ha. I looked into doing it. The fob would have still remembered the electronic part that does the locks. However, you would need to program the immobilizer chip in the key fob for the new key. That part you either need a vag-com device for or take it in.
Awesome video; l notice you used a screwdriver as a key to lock the doors- l also noticed that the door was opened when you turned the screwdriver to lock the door. My question is couldn't you have simply pressed the power locks on the door panel to lock the door and get the same programming affect?
I don’t think so because you have to hold it there but shoot now that you mention it I wonder if you could hold the actuator there. It’s not good for it I’m sure but I wonder if you could. You have me curious now.
Andrew Cruz yeah it would. As long as you have a chipped key. Your valet key would have the chip in it. Then you can program a fob. That’s all I had to start with was the valet shown.
my key has the old blue and white logo but the new key design, Id say the new key design is easier I didn't even need a screwdriver. thanks for the video
Shoot I’m not sure if there’s a locking module or if it’s just the main ecu that recognizes the signal from the fob. Maybe a little research there would be good. Never thought of that.
@@Phatphatyo yes I was able to take the lock barrell out, then I split my key in half so there was the blade half with the immobiliser chip and the button half. Blade half to turn the ignition, screwdriver to turn the door lock as per video and program the fob with the buttons just as in the video then when done out the key back together.
One more question! If i buy two keys with fobs, I use one to turn the lock and unlock on my car and my main key to switch the car to on. Will my 3rd key that i'm activating work and turn on the car?
Abiz PB I think it’s supposed to honk but I’ve heard a couple of people comment and say that it didn’t but still programmed. I guess you’ll know it the fob works but mine honked.
There could be a light with a lock symbol or an illuminated "SECURITY" light that comes on the odometer on a lot of different vehicles. Not sure about this specific model, however. GREAT video! @Phatphatyo

Thank you veru much for a wonderful tutorial, i have just done it on a 2012 polo vivo and it was successful the first time.
Awesome!! I’m glad to hear that it was helpful. It’s certainly cheaper than paying a dealer.
works for 2002 ibiza 6l, doesn't honk and you need to press open and than close button on new remote to program the keys.
Thank you for posting this useful info ...nicely presented!
Thanks. Glad it helped.
thanks for this... I thought I had a bad battery out of package... put a volt meter on it and then became perplexed as it was over 3 volts... so on a lark I searched for programming keyfob for my TDI... Cheers!
Jake Robinson glad it helped.
Maybe the battery didn’t go in quite right or make a good connection.
thanks for replying. i'll double check that...
Tried this and it works! Thanks for the video very helpful!
Sam Bartonns glad it helped. Makes it worth doing the video ya know? If you want to subscribe I have some more tips and tricks I need to get posted. No hard feelings if you don’t but it helps me out if you do want some.
you are a life saver! thank you so much! I am eternally grateful for this tutorial.
TheGrimriftstalker AWESOME! I'm glad it helped. All I could find when I was in your situation was piss poor half tutorials and "this may work" sort of things so I had to make one for other people that were looking for one. I can't promise it was done well but it works. :)
You did enough of a good job for an idiot like me to follow from memory, lol.
I have my original remote key but got missing little bulb and battery , so I brought it fob case with new battery and bulb so , I used the battery and bulb in my original fob key and is lighting but not opening or looking car apart from manually. please any idea help ! many thanks .
Hey just wanted to say thank you this worked also on my 2001 Volkswagen Beetle
Awesome I’m glad it helped.
Thanks buddy , cannot wait to do this on my dad's 2000 Volkswagen golf 😊
@@_LEGENDARY_EURY_ you bet!
I’m about to try this, this weekend. I’ll be back to comment again!!wish me luck😂!
I’ll try and check comments a couple of times this weekend in case you have trouble. Go get it. It’s not too bad of a process.
Didn’t honk for me but if you follow his exact movements it worked perfectly. Trying again? Just remove the key and trace his steps! Thanks man
There’s been some that say it honks and some say it doesn’t. I don’t know what the difference is but mine honked. 🤷
I don’t know he years. It works for about anything mk4, I’ve heard mk5 and 6, I don’t know about 7.
Not all heros wear capes. Thank you!
This worked perfectly. Saved me probably a hundred dollars.
That’s great to hear! I’ve got a couple other little vw tips and tricks videos if you wanna subscribe. No pressure though. Thanks again for the feedback.
Big props son! Well done thank you 🙏🏻
Glad it helped 🙂
I have golf mk 4 and i have remote from other car renault megane, will the same remote from other car work on golf mk4 ?
Thaxxxxx alot broooo that’s helpful works on my jetta2000
Awesome! Glad it was helpful! Feel free to subscribe if you’d like. I have a few videos I need to get uploaded. No pressure but it helps me out (and if you do want to see more).
I literally have the fob with the blade . It unlocks but don't lock, any ideas how to do it with 1 key ?
Mr Rees yeah unless the button went bad- this video shows you how. Except you’ll want to program the same fob instead of a different one. I’d unlock works but lock doesn’t you may have a problem with the fob itself. Give it a shot. Only takes 5 min but if it doesn’t work then it will tell you that it’s the fob that’s bad. You can always buy another and just swap the blades out.
thank you so much for posting this. It worked!!!
Oh weird. What year and model was it? My trunk release worked on my mk4 and my mk5
Thanks for this info. My keys are obsolete so bought from amazon new FOBs
Awesome. Glad it’s helpful to you.
It only had the spare when I bought it.
this is really good for me. i changed over my key blade, transponder chip and the circuit board into a new housing and the remote locking hasnt worked since. im hoping this will fix it
Hope so. It should if its a new fob
That’s a chip problem it sounds like. The valet key would need to be reprogrammed to the car if it has a chip and if it doesn’t it needs one.
Many Thanks
@@aamirmoinuddin9904 oh okay. That’s just an alarm issue then. It doesn’t sound like the chip of it lets you drive it. The alarm is armed.
@@aamirmoinuddin9904 wow that’s awesome that you got it back. Sometimes people are awesome.
Also thanks for the sub. You’re awesome.
Nice work well done!
My Issue is that I have lost orginal key and i need to buy new one. The driver door key stuck in drivers door lock so even with new key it is not going to turn left or right respectivly close or open. I just wonder what do i need to do to fix the door lock before programing a new key
Ahmed Alshehri good question. Can you grab it with tweezers or something?
Worked great for my 2005 Golf TDI, I used a old vw key I had.
AWESOME!
I'm about to do this with a 2002 seat Leon cupra.......it's virtually a mk4 golf, it's got to work....I hope.
Mark lapham shoot if it’s a mk4 style I bet it does. Let us know. It’s worked with just about any other mk4, some 3s, and a lot of 5s.
@@Phatphatyo nope I can't get it to work. I knew it wouldn't....stuff like this never does work for me. Now my car won't lock or unlock using the key manually.
I didn't have to take out the lock barrel as I have my spare key.
Mark lapham this process doesn’t have anything to do with locking manually if you didn’t pop your key cylinder. Wonder what happened?
I have a problem with my car at the moment not driven it for 2 weeks and it now sounds like a racing car, not sure if it’s the exhaust or the fact I’ve not driven it, plus my alarm keeps going off same model golf mk4
Less than 5 minute job if you have T20. Thanks for this video
Jake Hamilton awesome. Glad it helped. And good for you for having the tool and not having to rig it like me. Ha
Do all vw golf mk 4 have immobiliser mine does not seem to work even though I have more than 2 keys
did work, using your and another video and another comment below, so many ways and details how to do it uhh, 2hours work with searching, trying and did it
Wow. Well I’m glad you got it.
Worked great on my golf!! Thanks a lot man.
L1nx good deal!
Great video.. it worked on my 2010 Jetta mk4.5 (latinamerican version of Jetta mk4) the only issue i had is with the trunk button "doesn´t work" only locks and unlock the doors! do u have the same issue?
Oberto Cuadro no mine did the trunk too
It only programs the fob though not the RFID I'm still trying to figure that one out without taking it to a dealer or locksmith. I'm going to try the 3 - 10 minute thing and see if that does it
Please let us know if you were able to program the replacement key so it will actually start the vehicle. Programming the FOB itself is the easy part. A replacement ignition key (RFID) might still require a VW dealer.
looks so much like mine, love it,this colour and wheels :O :D
Andy for sure. I shouldn’t have sold it.
My car doesn't honk, but new key paired perfectly!
Sweet action! Glad it worked!
hey great video, but i just wanted to ask, if you did order a new blade on the key fob you wanted to start using. would the blade work once the car has learned the new key fob. thanks
zvkeria yeah it would have.
You are the man! just saved me some money
Awesome! I’m glad it helped. Feel free to subscribe for more VW videos and tutorials. Thanks again for the feedback.
Would this work if i only have the "valet" key. Bought the car used only came with valet key no fob
Andrew Cruz yeah it would. As long as you have a chipped key. Your valet key would have the chip in it. Then you can program a fob. That’s all I had to start with was the valet shown.
just orderd the key for 03 jetta gonna try this tomorrow.
sylbert cheekan should work on that year I'm pretty sure. That's still a mk4.
Awsome worked great on a keyfob i found at the junkyard
Jason Lundeen awesome. glad to hear.
Amazing! thank you, so much! I was about to pay $215.
Carlos Fernandez Awesome. Glad it helped!!
How did you know which fccid works on your car?
Or which remote model works?
You’d have to either have one to look at, google it and hope it’s right, or ask a dealer I would think.
What a lifesaver ! Fantastic instruction!
theGanzo57 glad it helped. Thanks!
my key has the old blue and white logo but the new key design, Id say the new key design is easier I didn't even need a screwdriver.
thanks for the video
Yeah the new ones you just do sitting in the car I think don't ya?
Thanks pal for the upload. Will give it a try. Say this method does not work. Do you think that it is the central locking module that needs replacing?
Shoot I’m not sure if there’s a locking module or if it’s just the main ecu that recognizes the signal from the fob. Maybe a little research there would be good. Never thought of that.
Very good, clear tutorial. Thank you.
brigitte george glad it helped. :)
Does this work on a 2012 Jetta...? Seems like at a certain year the process changes.. but I'm gonna give this a try. Thnx
Not sure on 2012. Report back and let me know for those mk6 people.
Thanks, this helped me out because I have 2 problems, I only have 1 key and my lock barrel doesnt work.
And it still worked with a screwdriver? The barrel did come out?
@@Phatphatyo yes I was able to take the lock barrell out, then I split my key in half so there was the blade half with the immobiliser chip and the button half. Blade half to turn the ignition, screwdriver to turn the door lock as per video and program the fob with the buttons just as in the video then when done out the key back together.
Outofthi5world oh nice. Haha. Thanks again for the feedback. Feel free to subscribe for more VW tutorial videos. I need to put more on.
One more question! If i buy two keys with fobs, I use one to turn the lock and unlock on my car and my main key to switch the car to on. Will my 3rd key that i'm activating work and turn on the car?
★ Ally_Woo | CSGO & More no it doesn't program the chip (immobilizer) it only does the fob portion to lock and unlock
★ Ally_Woo | CSGO & More no it doesn't program the chip (immobilizer) it only does the fob portion to lock and unlock
Very elaborate and helpful. Thank you
You bet. It’s always good to hear that it helped someone.
If car doesn't honk how to know we entered programming mode?
Abiz PB I think it’s supposed to honk but I’ve heard a couple of people comment and say that it didn’t but still programmed. I guess you’ll know it the fob works but mine honked.
There could be a light with a lock symbol or an illuminated "SECURITY" light that comes on the odometer on a lot of different vehicles. Not sure about this specific model, however. GREAT video! @Phatphatyo
