Thanks for the video, the real issue is the abusive and outregeaus prices these companies charge for a stupid replacement.
Yep, well said
Thank you, my blade holder snapped and I was quoted £160 for a new key. Bought a case and pliers off a well known internet retailer for £13 and spent 45 minutes to swap over the original key blade into the new case. Used a sharpening stone to file a tiny bit off the blade so it fitted the new case. This video was invaluable in saving me time and money.
Just wanted to say big thank you. I ordered the key off eBay for £10 and I swapped over the bits and I just filed it down and it fit.. I used the silver pin and a hammer to knock out the key blade it fits perfectly
Great stuff, that’s a good result. Appreciate the feedback :)
thanks for this video. Managed to do re-shell my wife's Skoda key following your guide. Biggest issue was finding someone to cut the new blade (only) as i already had the shell. None of the chains will do it so ended up at a local locksmith. I had tried to knock the pin out to swap the blades but gave up after a while (must need a hell of a lot of force!). Worth the effort in the end. About £35 all in including £10 for a 12mm OEM Skoda logo. Still half the price Timpson wanted to charge... and i learnt something. Thank you.
Well done Adaam, you needed a small pin punch to get the pin out. Glad it's all sorted :)
Thank you so much for this very useful video which has helped me to repair my broken Volkswagen key. I have watched several videos on this topic and yours is the best by far. Your video has been the only one that has shown how to open the new case and how to safely open the old key. You have saved me a lot of money: the new case was only 9.95 Euros. Again, thank you a lot!
Best protocol on YT for this issue. Shown by a professional. Thanks mate!
Thank you very much for such a detailed course including those tiny but crutial pieces of information. I really appreciate it. Greetings from Poland! :)
Very useful video, key repaired much cheaper than VW or even an aftermarket key supplier
Excellent video.
Very easy to follow instructions and a new key successfully built for my van for a fraction of the price that VW wanted.
Many thanks for showing us all how to do it.
Well done, really pleased it helped :)
Yes, I was starting my car like this... FINALLY somebody who explains the whole procedure in all detail! Got it. Only: you forgot to put in the bottom pin in this video... Caught ya!
Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped.
Fixed my VW key!! Purchased kit from The Car Key Man and followed this guide - all sorted and chuffed to bits! Thank you!
Brilliant Phil, really pleased and thanks for the feedback :)
Thanks for the video. It helped me with replacing the fob for the key to my 2002 Skoda Octavia. My problem was that the metal loop at the end opposite the blade had broken off so I couldn't put the fob on a keyring, so I just swapped blade and circuit board. However, the immobiliser then stopped the engine from running. After quite a bit of Googling, I discovered that the RFID chip that the immobiliser system uses is in a tiny glass tube that's glued deep in a little recess right next to the blade pivot. Once I'd managed to extract the tube and get it glued securely in the new fob, the key worked perfectly.
Glad it helped Allan :)
You are a life saver! Followed each step after order a replacement key (£5 off eBay) and jobs a good un! Thank you! Very Professional!
Well done Mark, glad it helped you :)
Perfect video😁😁❤❤my heart sunk near the end when you changed the tops over😲 but then you said you would show how to wind the blade back on if it comes apart at the end of the video, I cheered out loud🥳🥳🥳🥳 Thanks to you a have my flick key back after months of having to pick the blade out with the button pushed everytime I got on or out, as my central locking wasnt working 🤣🤣🥳🥳🥳💪💪💪💪
Well done Mick, these keys are so bad, but I'm glad you're up and running again :)
Thank you! It worked perfectly, except it took me 3 or 4 tines to get the key springy but I got it. 😁
Yes a bit tricky, you need three hands, but glad you got it done :)
Thank you very much, very informative and a great help - Gary from NZ
Hi Garry, really pleased to help you all the way in NZ, hopefully we'll get out to see you beautiful country one day. Thanks for watching :)
thanks so much for the video what a help it was. It helped me get over my dog dying so i really needed this! hopefully i can afford hot water and a mortgage next year! But at least i know how to fix a car if i can ever afford one. Thanks, Jan 🎉🎉
It worked for me. Thanks.
Went to timpsons who told me they would charge me £15 to cut the key part. With no guarantee it would work and no replacement. But gladly it did work.
When i confirmed the key worked. Popped the fob out just like shown here. No problems.
Great stuff Elliot, glad it worked out ok :)
Thank you, your kit and video were brilliant. 'New' key fully functional. Husband had tried many glues before I found him your video.
Hi Norma, thank you for your kind words. It's really good to know he's up and running again :)
This is the best! I actually used the old case with the knowledge of this. Thank you.
Thats great, pleased it helped :)
Thank you very much for this very helpful video. This worked like a charm on my 2013 VW Passat key! I saved all my bother and got my key cut, and it was easy to switch. I managed to use a pair of regular needle nose pliers (didn't have those spreaders) and just pulled it apart. Took a little muscle, but I did manage to break it open without damaging the brains. Brain transplant was easy, and boom...or should I say, Bob's your uncle. Many thanks!
Great stuff. Yes it's always easier if you can get the blade cut. Some chains of key cutting shops refuse to cut keys that they haven't sold. Glad it worked out well for you and thanks for the feedback :)
That was perfek. Thanks a lot ! All Best from Germany where i could not find a detailt cours
Well done fixing it, really glad it helped :)
Thank you very much for such a detailed course including those tiny but crutial pieces of information. I really appreciate it. I succeeded of course! Greetings from Poland! :)
Hi Tomasz, hope you're keeping safe in Poland. It's easy to get this wrong, we see lots of keys broken because the pin has been pushed in. Take care and thanks for watching :)
Thank you ! I ended being able to fix my Jetta key that accidentally got burnt on the back all pieces were still functioning ! And the new casing worked
Good job! The fix is a bitt fiddly, but in your case definately worth it :)
Thanks very much from LA, CA very helpful video it worked for my 2012 Jetta and it saved me lots of money form going to the dealer
You're welcome Luis, glad it helped you and hope life is good in LA
Pour que je parvienne à faire cette intervention il fallait un excellent tuto . Bravo et merci .
Thank you so very much. Made my honey do list that much shorter. Wonderful detail. From the beautiful Oregon Coast.
Hi Kenny, thanks for your feedback. I've not been to Oregon, but love your country. This is such a common problem, we fix many every eek. Did you manage to get it fixed?
Just replaced the chip and had it cut out. All under 20 euro's. Love it
Well done :)
That was incredibly helpful, thank you!
That’s great, really pleased it helped :)
I have one transponder key and was so skeptical about doing this myself. I must have watched your video 10 times and finally after getting my new shell and key cut, I went ahead and followed your instructions and it worked !!! Thank you for the detailed instructions!!
Great stuff Rodney, well done :)
Amazing video, very detailed and pedagocical. Just swapped for my VW Up. 👍
Well done Anton, great job and glad it helped :)
Excellent video! That was exactly what I was looking for! I bought a new case from Amazon. They shipped it in a bag with a small Phillips head screwdriver. I’m not sure why since there isn’t a single Phillips head screw anywhere within the case, but no worries. My bigger concern was I didn’t see a replacement pin! It turns out the brilliant folks at Amazon put a large inventory sticker over the clear side of the bag the key case came in when they could have put it on the opaque side. There was a very small zip lock bag inside that had a new pin! Imagine that!
Thanks for watching Jeff
under the logo
Excellent video, just what I needed to know
Thank you Salvador, pleased it helped :)
Thank you for such detailed video. It gave me enough confidence to try it myself instead of taking it to locksmith. It saved me 💲💲. Thanks again
Great stuff Marco, glad it helped :)
Where did you buy the replacement key from?
Thanks. Your video helped me a lot. Most important thing to not destroy electronics.
Agree Pszemo, use the circlip pliers to open the key
Invaluable video. Just done mine, thankyou👍
Great stuff, really pleased it helped )
Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
You're welcome, thanks for watching :)
I had a broken key on a seat Ibiza and managed to glue it back together with araldite and it works great 👍
Good DIY, just mind the blade doesn't come loose and get lost, we see this a lot!
Thanks for this video. Ordered a replacement key body from you and just rebuilt my key. used a combination of a belt/disc sander and a file to shorten the key blade and didn't have to file a new groove. Works brilliantly. Only bit of info i would add is to make sure you wind the blade holder round so that you tension the spring enough so it pops out like the original. Test it before you tap in the locking rod.
Hi Davey, thanks for this info, yes it will certainly help others. Thanks for leaving the feedback :)
Thank you for the video. I was also able to fit the old key after I made it shorter and thinner using a grinder.
Superb, fixed my broken key in 10 minutes 😎👏🏻👍🏻
Good job, glad it helped you :)
Well done! This has really helped me; many thanks! regards from Morocco
That's great news, thanks for the feedback :)
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome Yolo :)
This is the second time i use this video to replace my key fob , This video is the best one describing step by step in detail...
Thansk for watching , again :)
How much does the key cut usually cost? 🥲
@@SmokeMoCheeba you dont have to get it cut. there should be a tiny hole , you can pop out the stick that holds the key in place slide out the uncut one and slide in your old key and just push the stick back in the hole.oh and when getting a new keyfob make sure you pay attention the model case theres like 2 versions.Only one has the red light indicator on the opposite side of the push button to flip the key.
@@SmokeMoCheeba also if your old keys end is to thick just sand it down until you get it to where itll slide in place...hope this helps
Very fine super express first class to-do-DIY-Video!! Now its all well done. Thank You very very much!!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching :)
Thanks for this, a good help although my circlip pliers broke on the first attempt. Went for the sprize apart with a screwdriver method
Blimey, you had a tough key. Hope it's all sorted now
Finally! Thanks a lot mate. My key broke and blade flew out and I’ve lost it. Thought I’d have to melt the plastic around the pin and pull it out but knowing I can snap the key apart will be easier.
Hi, we used to melt the plastic too then pull it out. This method is so much easier :) thanks for the comment
Hi.,thanks for the helpful video
Replacement key fob ordered from you guys. Cheers 👍
Thanks Andrew :)
Very careful and very light work with an angle grinder will make the old blade fit in the new holder, it pays to check for fit many times while working.
Thanks very much for the video, very useful and now I have a fixed key :)
Great stuff Edward, glad it helped :)
This is superb, well explained and detailed enough to not make obvious errors. Thank you
You're welcome Nick, thanks for the feedback :)
Any idea where I can get the VW badge for the key fob? What do they call it?
Thanks for your excellent instruction sir.
Hi Paul, are you in the UK?
Great video. Thank you.
You're welcome Istvan :)
Thank you for the detailed explanations. I wanted to ask how I would go about getting the key cut? I have no experience with this, and I don't have anyone to ask. If you were to go get they key cut, what would you do? Thanks for your time.
Hi Jesse. Ok, so before you buy anything, do a search for 'Auto Locksmith' in your area. Or ask at your local repair garage if they have a number of a shop or mobile key service that could help.
I did this exact procedure on my fob for a 2012 VW Golf. In the video at time stamp 6:08 when I removed the circuit board, the gold looking switch got separated from the board and was stuck to the flexible rubber part of the keyboard. It may have bee intentionally glued by VW, I don't know for shure. I managed to remove it from the rubber part and re-glued it with a very thin layer of instant glue taking care to place it to meet the section on the circuit board and luckily it worked. If not, I would not the unlock function on the fob would not function. So beware.
Hi, thanks for this advice. Yes I'm starting to see this a bit now. They are not glued, but ust become attached overtime I believe. It can just be placed back onto the switch and with a bit of carefull assembly it will still work ;)
Excellent. Just changed out my polo key. Thanks.
Great job, well done :)
Thank you for the video, I filed my old key and it and it works perfect.
That's great Chris. Glad it helped and well dome ;)
Thank you very much for your demonstration. I have broken my Key from flippart. Any suggestion where to purchase online good quality to my Polo from 2011.
Hi, is it 2 or 3 button. Are you in the UK?
@@TheCarKeyMan 3 button. I live in Denmark.
Helpful video thanks! Would you happen to know the size of the punch or have link to the one you used to knock the pin out to switch the key blade?
Hi, a 1.4mm punch will work fine
Excellent video
Thanks for watching :)
Superb mate. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback :)
Great video
Thansk Josh, really pleased it helped :)
great content!!!!
Thanks Pedro :)
Fantastic video, there are a few videos showing how to knock the pin through, you're method is far better!
Thanks Gary, knocking through the pin is such bad news....
You are a Hero !!!!
You're very kind, thanks for watching :)
A lot of skills Mr Key Man, from ITALY
Hello Mario, hope life Italy is good. Thanks for the Feedback :)
Hi there, silly question I know but I presume you can get the key cut from any key cutting place?
Hi Callum, it depends where you go to and where you live. Some high street chains won't cut keys that they don't sell. If you find a good key cutting shop that take a more sensible approach, hopefully they'll cut it for you. Or you can swap the blade, however you'll need to modify the old blade to fit into the new case
Hi, Great video. Can you tell me the size of the punch you used to get the pin out of the key? Thanks
Hi, less than 1.4mm
Your trick to spring open the casing is great, as it is cheap to replace. Hitting that pin is indeed unneeded risk!
Yes, bad news if you try and knock the pin in. Thanks for the comment :)
Thanks pro Regards from Holland
Hi Frits, thanks for the feedback and hope it helped :)
@@TheCarKeyMan Yes the key is working fine now for 9 euro all good
Unfortunately, before I found your video, I was following another video on utube.
On the other video, the instruction was to knock the pin through I don't think I knocked the pin all the way through but am not going to know for certain until I receive my new case and try to start the car.
If by chance I've damaged the circuit board, what are my options?
Warm regards James Price
Hi James, sorry for the delay. Well you'll not know until you know. If it has damaged it, then you'll need a new key unfortunately. Do you have a second key?
Forgot to show Skoda badge removal without damaging it and what to stick it on with, excellent video though
Hi, I normally melt the edge around the badge with a soldering iron, then gently lever up the badge
Used a hair dryer
I know this is a video tutorial but you kinda forgot the battery. It`s clearly at 7:47.
P.S. Great video.
Did I? Oh blimey, that won't work then ! Thanks for pointing it out
Thank you tons truly
Thanks for the feedback :)
Good job
Thanks Mohamed :)
Your video help me a lot, thank you!!
That's great, what country are you in please?
The Car Key Man I'm from Malaysia.. I bought the key case about 2.5 dollar.. But our locksmiths here cost me 10 dollar to copy n cut the key blade and also told me to change new whole set and chip, cost around 110 dollar, luckily I saw your video and done it on my own.
Hi, We charge £10 to cut a key which I believe is fair. It pays for the replacement cutters, the equipment and a bit of rent etc! But I'm glad you figured it out :)
The Car Key Man really? Usually here for cutting key is around 3-5 dollar, but after he know it's actually a VW key, they charge me higher, but it's okay as long as settled the problem. Again thanks to your video, I might breaks the chip if I didn't watch your tutorial 👍🏻
Whats this of the roll pin that holds the tang in?
Thanks man!
You're welcome Francesco :)
Hello I have a question, I bought a Polo 5 that does not have remote centralisation, I bought a centralisation kit on eBay but there is no information on how to install it and I can't find anything on the internet for the Polo 5, have you ever done an installation of this type ?
Hi, I'm sorry but I don't do electrics, to be honest I'm fine if I can see it moving, but electrics is black magic to me!
Thank you!
You're very welcome :)
This looks real good easy and cheap to get. Can anyone give me a name in Sussex who will cut the new blade? Everyone seems to want to do the whole job £120 - £250. Went ahead and transferred my blade. I have plenty of small files and a Dremel. I had to adjust just about every dimension, even the depth of the groove. The new pin turned out to be hollow and crushed rather than shift, had to drill it. More seriously the switches, which should be stuck to the PCB, were adhered to the buttons. Work of art to sort that. Hope the next one is easier.
Sorry but I don't know anyone that way
@@TheCarKeyMan thanks for reply. I am pretty handy and have tools will try replacing blade.
How would you do this with a Mk7 Golf key? It’s a little different and I can’t find any videos showing how to replace the circuit board. Only shows how to change the battery
Hi Rhyan, yes the MK7 keys are a problem. The issue is getting the correct case. I'll have a look to see if I can do a video
Thanks man! You saved my ass!
You're very welcome :)
the key case looks a little bit different on my VW , does it matter or the one in your description will still work out? I have golf 7 2013
Hi, is your key bigger? You may have the new style, in which case, no it will not be compatible
If I have an MK6 key, this method will work right? Also, the current key fob I have has the red button on the side, the new fob I purchased doesn’t have that. Will this effect the exchange? Or can I still use the new fob without the red button?
Hi, to be honest I'm not sure. I've started to see Caravelle keys and keys with a red button and I haven't tried to transfer one of these over to a standard case, so I'm not sure if it will fit, sorry
Hi am going to fix my friends 2007 Jetta wolfsburg. 1 question. Where is the immobilizer chip? Is it on the circuit board? If I get the key cut with the kit and just swap the circuit board it will work?
Hi, no the chip should be a small glass tube, near the key blade. Be careful swapping this as if the glass breaks, the car will not start. I sometimes melt the plastic around the chip to ease it out slowly, using a soldering iron.
@@TheCarKeyMan Thank you. Is there something that could dissolve the glue or make it soft besides heating? I would be afraid of hurting it with heat. This poor girl is being told so much garbage about her ignition switch. Her cylinder is locked up. Which I can fix. They want her to buy a whole column and prob end up with the same problem in short time. Then program the key for 100 bucks. I told her the original is always best because of the doors, trunk ect. So anyway. I am sending her your video to show her it is possible and a lot less expensive. Thank you again. Lol, I am used to hondas doing this. have done a few. Which helps. These Volkswagens are a little different.
Hi Friend, thank u for video, where can I buy a 4 bottom remote?
Hi Farid, I don't know, really sorry
This just happened to me. So I come to UA-cam to help me.
Hi Lili, just be careful when opening the old case, use Circlip pliers and you'll be fine.
Same problem here in India...I am facing with broken key....It seams hard to fix so I went to a key maker...
He took 6$ for shell and 3$ to repalce it....job done in 10 minutes...I paid 900Rs.
So did he fix it well? Did you save money? Not sure how much 900R's is , sorry
Is there any alternative for pin removed tool?
Hi, well it needs to be something strong and below 1.4mm in diameter
Thank you so much. This is me right now. Where did you buy the case and pin please?
Hi, here's a link thecarkeyman.co.uk/car-key-shop/
@@TheCarKeyMan thank you. I have one. I have my old key to pit into the new unit. How do I remove the pin at the base of the key please? Thank you. Ok I’ve seen it now 😂
The 3 button case is unfortunately unavailable on amazon using the link. Does anyone know the product code or somewhere else I can find one? Thanks
Hi Ellie, yes sorry there is a problem sending in stock to Amazon. I'll try and post a link to a different one for you
@@TheCarKeyMan thank you so much, sorry, I didn't see the reply until now
5 mins of filing with me leatherman and the old key fit no problem
Nice! Handy tool to have ;)
I bought a new housing for my key but of course the blade doesn't fit. Can I go to a regular locksmith and habe the new blade cut or does a dealership need to do it? I was by VW and they said I need a whole new key and they won't cut the blade that came with the new housing.
HI, ok so the dealership cannot cut it. I would recommend going to a local key cutting shop and see if they will.
Where do you take the new key to get cut to match old if you can’t file down
Hi Kelly, a good key cutting shop should do that for you :)
Hi, i have a vw key and the led isn't working? Circuit board is getting current and buttons work....all tested with multimeter....my question is....if I replace the circuit board does it need coding or is it just the transponder that needs coding🤔
Hi Dave, with VW keys after 2010 the transponder is part of the circuit board, so yes it will need coding. Have you visited a local key cutting shop to ask if they can test your key? Just because the led comes on, you need to find out if there is a signal coming out
@@TheCarKeyMan its a key for a mk5 not a mk6...it has separate glass transponder.
The key isn't for my car, its for a friend. He has asked me to change the case to mk7 style....it might be working, I don't know as car isn't with me.
I’m trying to get the pin out with a 1.5 punch. It seems like like I can’t push it out any further.. any tips?
Well the punch I use is 1.4mm, maybe that's enough to make it too big. Sometimes if you turn the key over and try and push it from the other side it helps
I have a Seat Leon with exact same key fob. The key is slightly loose but the main problem I have, is that it discharges any battery I put in it within 3-4 days. I've gone through 6 batteries already, so I'm hoping I can use this video to take it apart, clean the fob (it's DIRTY) then put it back together with a new battery.
I expect the key has got wet in the past, you'd be better off getting a spare before you take it apart
@@TheCarKeyManWould you mind giving a link where I can buy this model of key fob please?
Can you just swap the entire old blade and holder over if you're just replacing a worn housing?
Hi, unfortunately the old blade holdr is built differently to the new one so will not work correctly in the new case
@@TheCarKeyMan I was lucky then. I’ve just done this as the buttons on my old remote were very hard to press. Swapped old blade over and all working.
Can you get just a replacement pin for the blade holder? For some reason it has come out of my key. The blade holder and blade itself look undamaged. Can't understand how that could happen but that's how it looks
How do I just order the bit around the spring? mine has split.
You can't buy it unfortunately without the case
What is the little pin called that you knock out at the end. Mine flew out when I click the key button
Hi, it's just a pin, not sure of the name to be honest. If your pin has fallen out, but the blade is stil in the key, it maybe that you have a hairline crack around the area of the hole. When this happens, the hole widens and the pin falls out
I had the exact same thing happen to me today with my VW Passat fob!!! I used krazy glue to reattach it, but I don't think this is a good long term solution... it still kinda wants to move around than staying absolutely firm
Yes unfortunately glue won't last long term ;(
