Just want to add to the comments. My 2 year told took the keys off the shelf and dismantled the key fob .... i tried everything but could not start the car ... SAFE with coil light flashing (Seat) - in these VW group fobs there is ID48 transponder capsule inside, it is the size of a grain of rice, black in colour and made out of glass, i was totally oblivious to this. Happened a month ago, so today had an idea to empty the contents of the vacum cleaner dustbag in a effort to find this tiny glass capsule before spending £200 on a new key, cutting, programming etc .... i found it inside the vacum cleaner, couldn't beleive it as it was over a month ago. These type of video's helped me save some money in this tough economic climate, just passing this information on to anyone in the future. Thanks ever so much.
I had the "immobiliser active" displayed on the dashboard too. Charged the battery out of the vehicle over night. Before fitting the battery I put the key in the ignition to the on position, & then connected the battery & the problem was sorted 👊
Thank for Your solution.... just now this case happen in my T4.... then after watch your video, then I tried to follow Your trick... it's works.... my T4 can start and run normally.. thank You👍👍👍
Thank you my Irish brother! You, my friend, are a time and life SAVER!. you helped me immensely!, not only with the specific issue, but I now understand how my Passat ticks for ANY issue it may have, in other words, I see the big picture where my car is concerned now. All because of YOU!.. Much respect my friend! Thanks again!...
I've had a start/stop problem twice in the last few years on diesels, and neither of them had any warning lights or errors. The first time it was the fuel regulator sticking (1.6 HDi), and letting all the fuel bypass the injection system, and go straight back to the tank. And the second time it was a faulty EGR (Ford 2.2D), but it was a strange one. Sometimes the car would start and then die, but other times it would start fine and idle rough, and maybe die when I gave it a bit of revs, and other times it would run better when I gave it some revs. But it would cut out or lose power randomly while driving down the road. A temporary fix for it was to disconnect one of the wiring connectors, like the MAF, MAP, Turbo Actuator, or EGR, and force the car to run on its "default" mode, until my new EGR valve arrived. But this was misleading me for a while when I was diagnosing it, because initially I'd disconnect something like the MAF and the car would start, and then I assumed it was a problem with the MAF.
Thanks bro ,, you saved me so much headache. I just want to add an extra point and that is if you can try to take the key slighly apart so the transpounder is showing and exposed to the metal key input of the car.
There was something different about that golf it came to you with a full tank of fuel normally cars go to the garage with no fuel that's my experience anyway
Great video Leon. Another issue on VWs is the steering angel warning light comes on when the battery has gone low. Its sometime goes out after a short drive. Keep up the good work.
That because its need calibration in newer model alot of assistance function wont work if you wont do the calibration in this model you have abs. To Do it turn the streeing wheel all the way to the right and then all the way to the left. Its better to it before the drive even though the calibration happenes while you drive as you mentioned.
Happy new year... I thought this was going to be a case of the chip falling out the key when then the customer pulled the key from the ignition and it fell apart.. I've done a few where I've been on my hands n knees in a carpark looking for a lost chip...
Older video, but my 2012 VW Passat is doing something like this but very similar. I’ve been to the shop and they say when they try to look at the code, it looks completely wiped and shows no history or reason why it was wiped. I start the car, and it shuts off like you did, in the brief second it turns on I can gas it. But then it shuts off. If the key stays in after attempting to start, it will just turn over, when you take the key out and try again it does the turn on and off thing. I’d really Like to get this fixed as this is my main car and I have had to get it reprogrammed every time it starts doing this and it costs me 500-600 dollars. I’ve had this happen multiple times. When it first started happening if I waited like 5 to 15 minutes it would then turn on but doesn’t do that anymore.
Another very common immobiliser issue with VW mk5 is the immobiliser pill in the key comes unstuck, especially if key is dropped, it falls out of place the the immobiliser pickup ring can't read it. If the key is rattling, the pill has dropped, key needs taken apart and pill stuck back in place
I replaced the ignition starter on my volkswagen passat and the key that came with the replacement is just a simple key, can I leave the fob inside the car or do I need an ignition switch that takes a key with a fob
My Passat cc TDI today started fine as always but while driving up the street cut out and then took about 5 mins to start, was turning over then eventually started. Parked it up after a few hours when to start car and starts fine but when driving slowly it's ok but when I put my foot down it was struggling like going to cut out
Oddly just going to fix a similar Golf 1.6 FSI. Issues with P0222 and P0122 popping up with other intermittent faults and damp in the CD player. I think it's wet under the scuttle plate because the drains are blocked. Also will pull the ECU to dry it out and clean the contacts.
I have a 2010 Audi TT 2.0 with the same start problem but also the instrument cluster is not lighting. I just saw your video and put a charger on the battery and turned the key on. VCDS code P1570 Engine start blocked by immobilizer. second code U0155 No communication with instrument cluster. Any suggestions?
Yes I solved the problem by putting the charger on the battery, turning the key on but not starting and letting it set for about 5 hr. Then turning the key off the next day it started as if nothing happened. I did a bunch of other things I found on UA-cam but they didn’t work I don’t think.
Happy new year. Got one for you freelander 2 2.2 td4. Would not start in the cold had to crank it for ages went to start then would just crank. Is it possible faulty injector? Sometimes when coasting car will go to stall? Rac reckons faulty injector. All the best mate.
This is me with my vw passat 2016. I recently changed the battery and it worked fine. 1 month later my car wouldn’t start. Engine would start and wouldn’t stay turned on.
I have just now same issue with Golf plus 2005 1.9 TDI, changed battery to new very good EFB battery and after one week the car will not run; start and run for 1 second and then die. How did you fix your problem ?
@@petertattoo I gave up and went to vw dealership and they gave me a new battery and they said they had to calibrate the battery to the car. Because when I changed it I didn’t calibrate it and also the battery had a bad cell. But I had to pay 300 or 400 some for all of that 🤦🏻. So if changing battery it needs to be calibrated to the car. It’s my first time owning a VW so all of this was news to me.
I have got a puzzle for you Leon , i have a 65reg Renault Twingo MK3 1.0L engine in the rear and starter just clicks from the solenoid so i dropped the engine and box thinking it was the starter as i had fitted a reman one about 5 months ago, no it's not that at fault then when i went to turn engine over in the direction of rotation and it is locked up solid but if i turn it anti clockwise it will turn over and over and over but as soon as i go to turn it clockwise it's locked solid, i did think it was stuck in gear so i got a friend to depress the clutch so it disengaged the engine from the box but it's still locked up turning it clockwise, the owner said she had it serviced just before she went on 2 weeks holiday and had been stood for that time then when she went to start it the starter just clicks.
Hi mate I have not had too much experience with them twingo But it sounds to me like something to do with the timing. It is very unusual, but when you turn the correct way. Maybe something is moving and it is getting stuck. Without seeing the car, it's very difficult. But I would be looking at the timing first
Another thing you can do is take things off like take the starting motor off and trying turn the engine, take the rocket cover off and trying to turn the engine, see if you can see what moving or what isn't moving
@@bodgitandleggitgarage had starter off when trying to turn over, still the same. No matter what position of rotation the engine is in turning it anticlockwise as soon as i start to turn it clockwise it's solid it doesn't move at all, they have the same rear end suspension set at the smart car, i wouldn't know how you would remove the driveshafts as there is no wishbones it just has a horseshoe shaped rear beam axle with hub carrier plates welded directly to it then the hubs bolted to them but when you unbolt the hubs the hole that's left behind isn't big enough to slot the driveshaft outer cv through it, i had to drop down the engine and gearbox just so i could get one 10mm bolt out of the inlet manifold because it bolts down at the base of the engine block and there was only 5mm gap between the inlet manifold and the bulkhead and that bolt is recessed about 40mm it's the most pathetic car i have ever worked on, they will be given a wide birth after this fiascos over with.
@@markmawson1 Unfortunately, I do not know what to say as it's very difficult not being next to the car. But the only thing I can think of is when the engine was turned the wrong way something has maybe moved. I would still be looking at the time inside of things.

I did replace with an EFB battery and now the car will not run - it start for a second and then stop. Battery is fully charged. Do you have explanation about this behaviour of EFB?
Car is a Golf Plus 1.9 TDI, YEAR 2005 , after change battery and after 1 week of normal usage the car will not run and the glow plus signal is flashing
