    This setup was used on the new Batman movie. In this video I’m going to explore why someone would put a $60 Helios 44-2 lens on a $6,000 RED KOMODO cinema camera.

    They used a modified version of this lens from Iron Glass optics, which fitted the lens with traditional cine gears, and the Batman also utilized the lens with an anaormphic insert, to mimic the look of the other lenses used on the film.

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  Рік тому +2

      Yes, true I even mentioned the Iron Glass mod in the end of the video. But technically the glass elements are the same so you can still get the look with the original lens.

    Hi, just a quick question about your lens adapters. Are you using 2 adapters? An EF to RF speedbooster and a M42 to EF ring? Do you know if this could work with a EF to RF speedbooster and a EF to FD adapter? I can't seem to find a RF to FD speedbooster in stock, so using 2 adapters would be a work around, but I'm afraid the flange distance would cause some issues.

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  6 місяців тому

      Yep, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I haven’t used FD lenses, but in theory this should work, as the first adapter gives you the flange distance to EF and the second from EF to RF.
      So a combination like this: amzn.to/3S28RTa
      and arguably the best speedbooster for RF cameras (I’ll do a video on it soon): amzn.to/3tD99Xe
      should work just fine.

    You can change the shape of the bokeh by adding an anamorphic bokeh filter in the front of the lens.

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  11 місяців тому

      True, it would be similar to getting an “anamorfake“ insert.

    It's not russian tho. Soviet time? Yes. But made in Kyiv just as Helios 81H was. And there are still a few companies in Ukraine rehousing such lenses for movie production.

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  4 місяці тому

      Oh, I wasn’t aware it was actually made in Kyiv, thank you for clarifying!
      I’m actually working with Iron Glass to try out and review their modded lenses, they work great!

    Why are the shots black and white? This was not helpful

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  Рік тому

      The weather was not really playing along and everything was brown and grey anyway, I found it very distracting and figured you can see the character of the lens better when I took away the colors in this case. The main focus I wanted to get across was the bokeh, not the colors. I’ll talk about those more in my next video.

    I have a bellomo helios and I love it! I rig it with a speedbooster too, nice for videoclip and some particular sort of shot. I made a video on my vimeo channel if you are curious with my bellomo.
    And Nice product shot with the crazy background!
    Last thing, If you watch the film Blonde, on netflix, you will notice some swirly bokek too, from petzval lenses, same look as the helios, DP use this sort of lens for particular effect, like portrait/ tunnel effect, and it work well!

      @@MortyFilms I never tried but apparently you can mix well Helios and anamorphic (like our vazen) never tried myself but I will be curious if you test it one day! That why they use it on the Batman (helios was more compact and good as a crash lens!)

    The batman was mostly shot on Arri Alexa LF. The crash cam for couple of shots was Arri Alexa Plus 4:3 with Helios 44-2 (IronGlass adapted version). There is in-depth interviews with DOP Greig Fraser about the equipment used on the batman. Nice clickbait tho :)

    • @MortyFilms
      @MortyFilms  Рік тому +3

      there where actually some shots shot on the Komodo as you can see here:
      ua-cam.com/video/0fEqY-kFQ78/v-deo.html
      In the Komodo Users group on facebook it was confirmed by Jarred Land and Simon Giles-Rowling who provided his Komodo for the film. Granted, I think they put a Leica 17mm on the camera, but technically both the Komodo as well as the Helios 44-2 where used on The Batman.

      @@MortyFilms huh interestingly enough Fraser never mentioned anywhere (watched couple of podcasts and videos specifically where they addressed the gear used for the Batman) about Komodo being in the cam lineup. Nice catch tho, i still think it's clickbaity 🤣 title but nonetheless nice video.
