- In this video I share my current set up with the YFZ450R and the new Vortex ECU. I also included some of my experience with the Power Commander 5 and the differences between both set ups. As a precaution we also did the clutch basket mod which replaces the newer 3 bolt OEM clutch baskets with the stronger 2009-2010 8 bolt OEM clutch baskets. I want to give a huge shout out to Jay for all the extra tuning that has gone into this machine. We hope sharing this whole experience can help future YFZR owners decide how they want to set up their 450’s.

I got my full dasa exhaust. Just waiting on Fuel customs intake, vortex and 09 clutch basket. Looks like it does a lot! Cant wait!.
why do you guys use the 09 clutch basket?
The older basket won’t explode like the new ones do. Replace immediately!

I’d love to see a video comparing the raptor and YFZ in different realms to see how they stack up to each other. Those dang rossiers are sounding amazing. Might have to sell my HFM system and get one 🤔
I plan to do a comparison video later this season after I've had more seat time on the YFZ in more environments. I really like how the Rossier sounds on the YFZ! The HMF systems sound great too, I ran HMF on my Raptor and KTM back in the day 🤘

that dyno number is good to know. I have a 2016 i bought brand new in Feb 2017. my first setup was a two brothers slip on, filter, and a power commander, and i ran that for like a season. then i found a used vortex on ebay for a screaming deal and ran that for a couple years. last year i did a fci, dasa, and dirt bike intake cam and she runs pretty good. never had it dynoed, i just tune by feel. i run the stock clutch, and i beat the piss out of it without a problem so far. im going to have to bite the bullet here soon and get a cam setup, and do a MMAD head job and a compression bump bacause i have 2 raptors, a built 250r, and a hill killer banshee i have to hang with. My dad has one of the raptors, 13 to 1, stage 3 hot cams, gnarly port job on the head and throttle body, and we both have a big interest in a little nitrous shot. should be interesting. thanks for the vid man.

i got the big bore kit...529 with j&e pistons and oversized valves and a full exhust 105ho... i have not lost yet.... this thing hauls the mail.. let me tell ya you what!!

Does the fuel pump prime the system with ignition on or does the pump only run when cranking? It really sounds like it has to build fuel pressure when cranking

Some things happened out of order due to the timing of certain parts. I plan to make a focused video around the new graphics kit along with the new seat cover, nerfs, and bumper. Then it will have a more finished look.. I can’t stand that silver seat 😅

When running higher octane do u have to do your valves and did u change out your piston
Iv got a 2020 yfz 450 how dangerous would it be to turbocharge it without reliablitlity problems like just a small turbo for like 20hp?

How do you prevent the exhaust coming from the engine from glowing red??
Get yourself a set of cams from carb model 2004-2005. you will see huge gains on top of the mods you have already done.
My 450 does the same thing cold it takes a sec to crank but fires right up when it’s warm
i have a 04 yfz450 and it cuts out a lot like even in neutral it’s not snappy at all like i have to ease in to the throttle idk what to do to fix it

The Vortex has it's own custom tune so those trim nobs are all at 5, 5, and 5 since I should theoretically never have to touch them 👍
Why when pulling a wheelie these quads pull to the right? Mine dose the same thing. Wondering if there’s a fix so I can pull longer wheelies
My back right tire was low on air. As long as the PSI is even you should always wheelie straight. Unless you're on a loose surface and pulling up really aggressively. That could cause you to come up in a different direction. Maybe try on some grass with even PSI and see if it still pulls👍
If you were to buy the 450 again would you have gone with the regular 450r or the 450r se? Im trying to figure out which one I should go with and tbh I’m having a hard time figuring it out. It would be my first atv. I’ve been watching all your videos they’re great!
I really wanted a Yamaha blue machine so getting the base model was all I wanted. Pretty sure the only difference between the R and SE is the colors of plastic and the aluminum GYTR accessories. Most people upgrade their machines quite a bit so its up to you if you want to save the $1K by getting a base model 👍

Jay created a custom tune on my Vortex so all the map dials are set to 0 since it's custom. Wish I could be of more help..
hello,
im looking at buying a new yfz 450 2024. currently a banshee rider and have been for years. curious if the big 3 and your custom tune on the vortex is worth the cost ? i want a machinen to just start and ride with no worrys of failures. my banshee is all moddified and i jut want a soild bike to ride when ever i feel like pushing the start button. is it worth the cost for the big three???
I'd say it's 100% worth the cost. It really wakes up the YFZ and the machines much more crisp. The throttle response will be way snappier too as long as it's tuned right 👍
So you gained what 6 hp and 3ft lbs of torque?
What air filter are you running on the fci theirs or a foam becuse I think I would rather have a foam
I’m running the FCI media filters on both the machines and I clean them with the K&N recharge kits 👍
Will they do a carbureted quad? I am having some issues with my 2008 outlaw 525
Yes we tune carbureted quads. We started tuning the fcr carb when they started using them in the early 2000s on the mx bikes and race quads.

So if you put on a vortex ecu and full exhaust, You also have to take it somewhere to get tuned?
It depends on where you source your vortex from and how well your machine runs. Some people have gotten vortex’s with preset tunes and their machines run poorly or won’t even start. No 2 engines run alike so there’s essentially no such thing as a one size fits all tune. To make sure your quad is running as good as possible the only way to do that is to bring it to a dyno tuner. The vortex software is pretty exclusive and not many tuners have access to it so your best bet is to ask for recommendations around your area whether it be on a forum or in Facebook ride groups 👍

We haven'tput in the testing back to back on the raptor 700 yet (comparing the same machine for valid results) . In my opinion the Raptors run so good with the power commanders that other than eliminating the speed limiter in 5th gear on the 15+ machines not sure if it would be any better.

Now that the raptor and the yfz is tuned which is the preferred bike and why
Both machines run great but deliver their power much differently. The preferred machine definitely depends on the ride location. The Raptor is fun in more wide open environments where you can really stretch its legs. It's super fun to hill climb with because so torquey and it's very comfortable to ride all day. It's definitely at home on the trails. The YFZ is ultra stable and predictable, it's super fun to ride when you're riding aggressively but doesn't like to slow roll very much. It's definitely a race machine so it's kinda stiff unless you're pushing it. I'm having a lot fun on the YFZ right now because it's still relatively new to me and it's fun to try in a variety of environments.
When they were doing the dyno pulls with the exhaust and no tune was it running safely? Same with intake exhaust no tune? I heard they run dangerously lean with mods and no tune?
I wouldn't expect it to damage anything doing a few pulls with those parts without tuning it. He did extra runs in the build steps just for comparisons sake on this video. I really wouldn't recommend doing those changes for the long term without getting a fuel controller and updating the tune. You could maybe get away with a slip on exhaust but getting your quad tuned will guarantee it's reliability as well as give you an even better experience riding it 👍

How’d you even find a vortex ecu? They are sold out on every single site ive seen lol everyone must of bought them with there stimulous checks. Love the quad though man those graphics are sick lookin!

Great video!! I really like the yfz but it doesn’t make sense to me to buy a brand new bike and then you have to spend like 1000 dollars to get it ready to run with no bog issues. I can understand that we must buy nerf bars, kill switch’ and those small things but buying a brand new ecu to get the bike ready is ridiculous.
I agree. It's very frustrating to say the least.. I really hope Yamaha does something to address this issue.. at least their still making new sport ATV's 🤞

Most dyno tuning sessions run around $450. Vortex's are around $900 now. I wouldn't recommend running a dynojet controller when the vortex's offer much more tuning capability than the power commanders
Off idle bug? Try just turning up your idle, it eliminated all my problems with that

I didn't have the best experience with the PC5 fuel controller unfortunately. I see a lot of guy's getting their Factory ECU's reflashed by PEP. Otherwise I recommend getting a Vortex ECU and having the machine custom tuned for the best results! 👍🤘

man i wish i could get this done! thinking about swaping mu power commander for a vortex. just bought a presicion stabilizer pro, cuz i didnt realize they have 2 models or i would bought the ultra or wat ever its called. but i think the pro will be ok for now
I think you'll be just as happy with your Precision Pro Stabilizer, it'll be very effective! I would see who's available to tune a vortex in your region and then see about buying the Vortex ECU through them and doing a custom tune. Getting your machine custom tuned to your set up will insure its as efficient as it can be. I've heard stories about several people having bought pre mapped vortex's and had issues getting their YFZ's to even run. Unfortunately it's a big investment but it's totally worth it in my opinion 👍

Wheel Horsepower. YFZ450R's generally put out 40HP from the factory and Raptor 700's put out 45HP on average 👍
