    I would love to see Doug do a comparison on some vehicles between the highest trim & the mainstream or base trim level. Love you Doug, but that's not how PHEV works! You don't lose the electric motor's power when the battery "runs out" because it has not actually ran out. The range they quote is referring to fully electric driving, so once you run out of electric only range, the vehicle simply turns into a regular hybrid with the same amount of power.

    • @robsolf
      @robsolf Рік тому +3

      Yep. You always have the power available, and it will always be a hybrid; charging when you slow down, using that charge when you take off. There isn't even a starter on the ICE. The electric motor always spins it up when needed.

      I was going to say the same thing. It’s a hybrid. You always have the full power regardless of the battery level. It has a 15% reserve so the battery never goes dead. The hybrid system just shifts the power around to preserve and maintain the battery above 15% so you always have that power.

  • @braedonsz
    @braedonsz Рік тому +173

      In the wrangler 4xe, the 17KWh battery makes about 15KWh available for all electric driving. The remainder is reserved for use as a hybrid. In the gauge cluster, you can view real-time power output from both electric, and ICE power. Acceleration even when on a “depleted” battery shows heavy output from both, and the acceleration feels no different.
      Not sure what would happen if you repeatedly made hard pulls without allowing time for regen braking and the engine to charge the reserve battery, but under normal driving conditions, power has always been there when I call for it

      We’re getting 40km on a charge (sorry for the KM, Canadian here). To and from work every day all electric - not a drop of gas Monday to Friday. We also took it from Ontario to Florida without stressing about where to charge- just fill up the tank as normal, and it runs like a regular old hybrid. If your commute is reasonable, Plug in hybrids really nail best of both worlds, with more HP and torque than the v6 alternative

      @@Nissart-su4mc for a wrangler absolutely (but understand it’s still built as an off-road vehicle with solid axles). I think the key difference the 4xe offers over traditional Wranglers is the added stability at speed given the battery packs lower the center of gravity, not to mention its a genuinely quick car. It’s not a luxury SUV the same way the GC is, but we’ve done several long road trips and it’s been fairly enjoyable on the road.

    • @VideoAmericanStyle
      @VideoAmericanStyle Рік тому +2

      @Harlan Are you sure about the benefits of e-save? I have a '22 4xE and NEVER use e-save mode, and everything I've read about it seems to suggest it wastes MORE energy through gas (expensive) by directly charging the battery. I have no idea why there would be any need for anything other than the regular 'hybrid' mode, which automatically defaults to the best balance. It doesn't make sense that Jeep's engineers would want you to be constantly switching between modes in normal driving.
      And to answer the other posters: it is essentially a standard Wrangler with a bit more weight, which adds to stability/center of gravity. I wouldn't define it as 'comfortable' when compared to, say, a typical crossover SUV, but it's certainly enjoyable to drive and I've never had any ergonomic issues even on longer road trips.

    The first thing any reviewer should say about this vehicle is that it's been about a year since Jeep announced the GC 4xe's imminent arrival, yet so far Jeep has managed to build virtually none for actual customers. They're now gearing up for the 2023 4xe while the promised 2022 MY is still basically an empty garage. It's weird to see reviewers pretend that anyone can just go out and buy this car right now. We all sympathize about the supply chain problems, but a conscientious reviewer should be very careful about endorsing vaporware, if that's what a car still is.

I have a fried who ordered a Toyota Rav4 hybrid in February also still waiting. I'm not sure how some of these dealers are keeping the lights on frankly. The dodge places all have tons of trucks, but little else, and the Toyota and Honda dealerships here have 2 or 3 new vehicles on the lot and a couple used. No way that bankrolls 30 staff and the nearly new multi million dollar new dealerships they've all built in the last 2 years. Something fishy must be going on with the numbers for sure lol

      Exactly, PHEVs do not suddenly "loose" the electric power when theyre supposedly "Out of charge". A PHEV never lets the battery fully drain, and it can always be used as a regular hybrid even when its "empty". Its the continues power that gets reduced, but the burst power (which lasts for like 10 seconds, which is more than enough for the car to have gotten up to such speed the electric motor is useless anyways) is the same.

Given that the weight of batteries increases the overall weight, the mileage skyrockets, so expect less than 23.5 MPG when on ICE power only which is terrible for a turbo 4cyl. Some people can only afford the car because they don’t have to worry about gas and maintenance, did you think of that? I wanted a Range Rover but I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford it when I included gas and oil changes etc. Tesla on the other hand was more affordable because I don’t have to worry about those things. Get a life and stop sounding like a hater. You need to realize that not everyone thinks like you and you don’t know everyone’s way of thinking or what they can afford and why. So do yourself a favor and worry about why YOU can’t afford an 80k car. You act like everyone pays the same for gas and put the same miles on their cars annually. I do 20k a year on my cars so yes, gas matters. Thanks.

We enjoy the off roading and open air of the Wrangler, but putting the same power in a more comfortable and practical package is a fantastic idea and is bound to be as near-perfect as Doug says. Doug,
    At least on the Volvo T8 models, there is always reserve power that is unavailable to consume and is reserved for depleted conditions so 0-60 (and AWD availability) is never impacted. Also, when the electric battery is low, the ICE compensates and bleeds power back to the batteries, so there is never a performance impact. I'm unsure if it's the same on the Jeep, but that seems to be the common design. So the only real way someone could see a power deficit would be if they were full throttle for miles and miles, for example maxing out on the Autobahn. However, most cars have speed limiters so even that isn't a realistic scenario.

    • @TheGamingNorwegian
      @TheGamingNorwegian Рік тому

      Continues power gets drastically reduced when the battery is low on charge, but the burst power is the same. So it is like youre saying, acceleration is the same regardless if the car is fully charged or not because it never fully drains the battery.

      @@walkerl.9402 100% right. I was surprised that Doug got that wrong, he’s usually really good on the technical stuff.
      I’ve had a 4xe JL for a while and absolutely love the hybrid drivetrain. People get it wrong thinking about PHEVs as electric cars with gas range-extenders. They’re hybrids that happen to have an EV mode. When the battery gauge reads “0%”, there’s still a 2kwh reserve for normal hybrid function. You still get full 100kw from the EV motor with heavy throttle, just no driving on electric only.
      The reason they aren’t doing a 3 row 4xe is weight. The battery pack is heavy, and there simply isn’t enough payload capacity left for another 2 passengers and extra weight from the longer wheelbase to stay within GVW limits.

    I purchased a 2022 Grand Cherokee L Overland fully loaded in February and 6 months and 15 000 miles later is doing great. I wish the V6 was turbocharged but it does the job. I live in Colorado so it’s perfect for going snowboarding on the weekends. However for $70 000 sticker price there are things that are super annoying. Like the Mcintosh Soundsystem… Yes the sound is good and it’s very premium looking but at the end of the day it’s installed in a vehicle that starts at around for $40 000 in the lower trim levels. Which means every time I’m trying to listen to loud music the doors are cracking like crazy. Even when you listen to only 10 to 20% of the volume level you can still hear crackling. They had to somehow insulate the doors. The second issue is the vehicle doesn’t detect the proximity of the key fob each time. Sometimes even when you were very close to the vehicle the lights are not coming off nor the kick lift gate works until you press the actual physical button. The next thing are the mirrors. I preset them to fold every time when I look the car and to unfold every time when I turn on the engine but sometimes date do not unfold until I turn off and on the engine or switch on and off the mirror button on the door. The last thing is two weeks ago my sunroof stopped working so I’m bringing it today to the dealership to fix it after waiting for two weeks for an appointment. Customer service = no bueno! They don’t even offer a loaner or Uber ride or anything so I have to literally rent a car to drive while the jeep it’s in the shop.
    However I used to drive many other cool cars before the jeep I had Maserati Ghibli prior and it was super fun to drive but I love my Jeep! It’s a great SUV especially if you live in Colorado. Also it does 19-22 MPG combined which is great!

Trust me, i searched up "VW Touareg off road" and theres literally a lot of videos of people off roading and even overlanding the Touareg which is crazy!!. Same thing with the Porsche Cayenne!! And the Touareg looks way better than the Grand Cherokee.

    I suspect that the batteries are placed where the 3rd row folds down - similar to the Pacifica which doesn't have stow and go seating in the hybrid. So, they can't do a 3rd row in the 4xe

    2:55, highly doubt that is correct. PHEV`s do not "loose" the electric power when the battery is supposedly "empty". At least if this is designed the same way as every other PHEV ive ever driven (which have all been European, American manufacturers might do things differently/dumber lol), the burst power will always be the same regardless of how full the battery is. People claimed to me that my 2017 BMW 330e would be slower when its not charged up as well, and they are 100% wrong. Same with the Ford Explorer hybrid, even tho its a PHEV it can always provide the 450 combined HP for a limited time, which is why its taking over for the BMW X5 in Norway as Police Cars. PHEVs electric horsepower is split up in "continues power" and "burst power" which usually lasts for 10 seconds. Its the continues power that gets lost when the battery is low on charge, but the car always have enough charge to supply the burst power. My 330e for example never lets the battery go under 12%, so it can always act as a regular hybrid and always have the burst power for acceleration.

    • @benjaminparent4582
      @benjaminparent4582 Рік тому +1

      This is exactly what I was going to say - once the battery is depleted enough, it should just behave like a regular hybrid, where it charges the battery from regen, or using the gas engine as a generator.
