okay, hear me out: There are 5 men and 4 women; if you pair them up, there is one left without a woman to be paired with. Since we already know that Marvin is one of these men, we can assume that he's the one left over, since he doesn't have a woman to be paired with because he's gay. So the line "four young ladies said they'd never lose their love" is really sad when you think about it, since Marvin DOES lose his love when Whizzer dies, which as we see here, he can easily blame on his sexuality. The line "but then they lost their love" could be about Trina, who's one of these four women, but ended up losing her love as well (because of Marvin leaving her). Trina never loses her pair, though, since she meets Mendel; so when Whizzer dies, it remains the same: four woman and five men. However, the line "It's simply this: four women and five men won't meet. They must, for love, remain discreet" which suggests that maybe the men and women referenced before are queer. two pairs of women, two pairs of men, and then Marvin, who is still alone (since "Marvin needs love" and Marvin "lost his love"). This is further supported in What More Can I Say? when Marvin says that he's "not usually indiscreet". Either way, this song is gorgeous, and part of what I love about Bill Finn is that there are so many ways to interpret the meanings of each line.

Ok I tried breaking down this song, this is kinda long but hear me out. we know this is marvins dream cause it’s after another sleepless night we don’t know who the 5 men are. But we have names Jessie, may, Bette, and sis. I think 3 of the girls are the ladies but Marvin used different names cause he says they have to remain discreet. Sis is marvins sweetheart. some clues is in another sleepless night she drinks a beer before she goes to sleep. He also says she killed herself we have clues she killed herself cause in the in trousers reunion that ms Goldberg was originally gonna be in March of the falsettos but Mary testa couldn’t make it so if ms Goldberg completely irrelevant to the story was gonna be added why not sweetheart. Maybe she killed herself Also considering how Marvin treated her this is very possible. May is Trina we could think this cause of the line “Mays a souvenir left on the bathroom shelf” souvenirs are something you buy on a trip to remember in falsettos even though Marvin is gay in act 1 he is still very controlling of Trina. She’s a reminder to Marvin of how he used to be in the closet how unhappy he was. “Left in the bathroom shelf” refers to how he straight up and left her for whizzer. Bette is Ms Goldberg. The line “Bette was nervous and she picked a scab from someone else’s arm” this line could refer to how Marvin used her to mask his gay feelings using her. We know this cause in the rape of ms Goldberg, ms Goldberg says all she wants Marvin to do its not touch her glasses he still took her glasses. But putting Marvin further in the closet But there’s one girl Left, Jessie. We don’t have much pointing to who she is but, it is possible she is one of the lesbians specifically Dr Charlotte. It’s very unlikely cause the only clue that we have is Jessie worked near the drugstore which couldve led her into becoming a doctor. However It’s also very unlikely cause the 4 woman can’t met each other and the 3 other girls never met . And Falsettoland wasn’t written till nearly a decade later so the lesbians definitely weren’t gonna be in the story yet the men in trousersI have two theories for this. The first one is Marvin says he used to be one of the men in trousers. it could be he’s not one anymore cause he met 3 of the women and they weren’t supposed to met. It also makes sense cause the line “they must for love remain discreet” implies if they meet their love life will be affected if they cross paths which made sense. Ms Goldberg had to carefully find someone to marry cause of Marvin, Trina was emotionally scarred and it was harder to find someone to love (until Mendel) and sweetheart was left not knowing what love felt like. The second theory is that in trousers is a metaphor for being in the closet. This could explain why Marvin isn’t a man in trousers anymore cause he came out of the closet and realized he’s gay. More stuff proving this is the line “the women sat demure and whistled through their teeth and left directions underneath on legs and knees” the ladies are what lead Marvin onto realizing he was gay “they left directions underneath” This could also be the reason They can’t meet the women cause they have no business meeting them. More evidence to back this theory up is this line “when they found their voice it was a ladies choice” it was the girls they dated that helped them understand they were gay hence why it’s a ladies choice. Also the line “these women laughed their very best, the men in trousers un impressed or else their lazy” women try impressing the men in trousers but their uninterested cause their gay. This was all I was able to breakdown but thx for reading
My theory is that the trousers represent a stereotypical masculine role. he doesn’t fit into the role anymore after realizing he’s gay, hence why he’s not a man in trousers anymore.
bean wife maybe it has to do with how much we go through life with almost a mask on like the trousers represent us hiding ourselves and our true desires but bruh idk
I have a theory! the first times he says the first lines, later he mentions 4 girls by the names Jessie, May, Sis, and Bette but later on he says Sis ended her life. The next line he says he was a young man once but he isnt anymore. I feel like that's insinuating that he took the place of her and now he's a young lady (gay men often also are referred to as a female as an insult) and he's the victim of losing his love. I hope that made sense haha
I just noticed Marvin does his little “In Trousers” spiel while the ladies are singing in the background and everything feels very cluttered and noisy, then the ladies leave and it’s just Marvin singing the in trousers section with the piano backing him before the trumpets come in and drown him out. Maybe the Ladies leaving at the end means something? Maybe I’m reading too much into this (like every other In Trousers fan tbh)
Uber late but I feel like it’s a sort of affirmation that gay men (men in trousers - my interpretation) are people too. They’re doing mundane things, but the guilt that Marvin feels about his treatment of the women in his life drowns this out. He learns to overcome that guilt, and reminds himself that he is s human. The trumpets symbolise the other stuff in Marvin’s life. Things that distract him from his personhood.

I kind of assumed that the women aren’t anyone specific, they’re just one less in number than the men to show how marvin doesn’t have a woman. But honestly who knows, I have no idea what’s going on
Tbh I’m pretty doubtful about the theory that the men and women talked about here are the cast of the trilogy. Not only does it make no sense for 4 given women in the trilogy to all have something in common like this (if the number were 3 this could work for the Ladies of this musical or refer to two of 3 ladies being queer and dealing with related problems themselves and the other “losing [her] love”, being objectified and abandoned, etc in Falsettos context) but there’s no 5th male Marvin Trilogy character. Also, the 4 girls are given names and stories that make it pretty hard to 1on1 relate them to the women of this. One annotation on the Genius page for this song suggests it’s moreso about similar conflicts between people. Like, Marvin is not the only gay man in the world who has struggled with his sexuality and masculinity, Trina not the only woman to be mistreated and abandoned by someone like Marvin, etc. I think that’s a good interpretation.
attention in trousers fans: i need in trousers friends and it's virtually impossible to find them out in the wild so if you need someone to freak out about it with pls reply to this comment
is the reason the 4 young ladies lost their love because the 5 young men were gay? does the number 5 being odd represent loneliness because it leaves someone? or does it represent the "homewrecker" gay man archetype in the trilogy (because whizzer never had a wife to turn out gay to) ?
Is In Trousers a metaphor for a disguise? Like Marvin is in Trousers as he cannot truly be himself Like living a lie as he cannot be publicly gay so he’s In Trousers
Right might a bit far fetched but hear me out IThe four women are called Jesse, May, Sis and Bette. Obviously not their real names, Marvin said they had to be discreet I’m guessing it’s Trina, Mrs Goldberg, Marvins Sweetheart and Charlotte (just a guess with Charlotte) The men in the group of 5 (Marvin being the 5th) all will be coupled up together except Marvin. In Trousers to me means denial, being unable to be who you truly are (sexually). All these men are In Trousers (secretly gay?) and these women said they’d never loose their loves and they did. Not physically losing them but losing what they thought their loves were (heterosexual) I think that the women are just people that Marvin knew. 4 women, one kills themselves leaving 3. Meaning 2 men are able to couple up (Marvin and whizzer?) Like I said I may be reading into it too much but hey 😂
In Trousers chronologically comes before Falsettos, it's basically a sort of strange narration of Marvin's life pre-Falsettos, flashing back and forth between his fourteenth birthday and his adulthood. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I know it's confusing.
i know i'm 8 months late however, the revival musical called falsettos is only semi related to In Trousers you see, In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland make the "marvin trilogy" in that order, In Trousers in the prequel, showing events before March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland Edit: Falsettos is a revival of March of the Falsettos/Falsettoland but In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, Falsettoland form the Marvin Trilogy

the men in trousersI have two theories for this. These women laughed their very best
The men in trousers aren't impressed
Or else they're lazy
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
And then they lost their love
Women sit like angels
Men like vultures
It's a trifle crude
It tends to make one think
Same folk acting like from different cultures
As they chew their food
Completely out of sync
It's simply this: four women and five men won't meet
They must, for love, remain discreet-
And who's to blame them?
[LADIES]
Marvin's giddy seizures
Marvin needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
Marvin's giddy seizures
Marvin needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
Marvin's giddy seizures
Marvin needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
He needs love
[MARVIN]
Jesse works the corner near the drugstore
May's a souvenir
Left on the bathroom shelf
Bette wears fragrances like eau de wanting-more
While Sis drank beer
And went and killed herself
I was a young man, once
In trousers, one of five
I write to keep the pain alive
But ask no questions
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
Four young ladies sat around and said
They'd never lose their love
And then they lost their love
And then they lost their love

I don’t need sleep I need to know who the fourth young lady is
I kind of assumed that the women aren’t anyone specific, they’re just one less in number than the men to show how marvin doesn’t have a woman. But honestly who knows, I have no idea what’s going on
I’m guessing
Trina, Charlotte, Marvin’s Sweetheart, Mrs Goldberg
Just a guess
@@ampersandcastle1091 I always thought the fourth was meant to be Marvin, this being how he sees his sexuality.
@@antiwokejohn9501 YES that’s what I was thinking
Im an In Trousers fan :)
HEyyy
chills
This piano makes me cry and sends me to sleep like wth
is the reason the 4 young ladies lost their love because the 5 young men were gay? does the number 5 being odd represent loneliness because it leaves someone? or does it represent the "homewrecker" gay man archetype in the trilogy (because whizzer never had a wife to turn out gay to) ?
PUT IT ON SPOTIFY, YOU COWARDS
*loud crying*
in theater a 'trouser role' is when a woman plays a male role and many insults for gay men relate to their (supposed) feminity
Is In Trousers a metaphor for a disguise? Like Marvin is in Trousers as he cannot truly be himself
Like living a lie as he cannot be publicly gay so he’s In Trousers
That's how I personally interpret it
I'm pretty sure the trousers are meant to represent the male ego and the constant need for dominance
i feel like they could've said waiting in trousers, crying in trousers, living in trousers, and dying in trousers. idk (RIP Whizzer)
Wait who are the four young ladies?
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO ALSO DOESNT GET IT
Right might a bit far fetched but hear me out
IThe four women are called Jesse, May, Sis and Bette. Obviously not their real names, Marvin said they had to be discreet
I’m guessing it’s Trina, Mrs Goldberg, Marvins Sweetheart and Charlotte (just a guess with Charlotte)
The men in the group of 5 (Marvin being the 5th) all will be coupled up together except Marvin.
In Trousers to me means denial, being unable to be who you truly are (sexually). All these men are In Trousers (secretly gay?) and these women said they’d never loose their loves and they did. Not physically losing them but losing what they thought their loves were (heterosexual)
I think that the women are just people that Marvin knew.
4 women, one kills themselves leaving 3. Meaning 2 men are able to couple up (Marvin and whizzer?)
Like I said I may be reading into it too much but hey 😂
@@neptunestardust OH. Wow,, thank you!! Yea i think this is probably it
Whats the relation to Falsettos? I know there related but how?
In Trousers chronologically comes before Falsettos, it's basically a sort of strange narration of Marvin's life pre-Falsettos, flashing back and forth between his fourteenth birthday and his adulthood. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I know it's confusing.
i know i'm 8 months late however, the revival musical called falsettos is only semi related to In Trousers
you see, In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland make the "marvin trilogy" in that order, In Trousers in the prequel, showing events before March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland
Edit: Falsettos is a revival of March of the Falsettos/Falsettoland but In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, Falsettoland form the Marvin Trilogy
