absolutely. not to mention with what little we hear of marvin’s mother says she’s cold and withholding- similar to how ms. goldberg treats him. not to mention how her lack of interest in him means she is likely safe- in that she’ll never return his affection like trina or sweetheart do.
Upon watching this for two years I’m now thinking that “the rape of miss goldberg” is about marvin feeling insecure (as we see in highschool ladies at five o’clock there are rumors about marvin screwing his friends which could possibly have been made up or bot because he joined the play, something that is seemed as a femenine or “gay” thing to do) and deciding to lie and say that he actually had sex with miss goldberg to disprove the rumors (thats why the whole marvin beating some guy in a fight “actually I drugged him, but not with pills, but an apple” thing makes no sense, he’s making it up on the spot) that ending up in miss Goldberg getting fired, as we hear the actual ms goldberg defending herself “I was never out of place, I taught and minded my business”, which is why she is in the story at all, the musical according to will finn (the writer) is in it’s core about misogyny. Marvin regresses unto his former self in moments of his life where he wronged a woman. He never payed attention to his sweatheart, choosing to fictionally choose ms goldberg and hurting both of them in the process, them when he got married to Trina knowing he would hurt her and finally when trina found out he was cheating on her with a man and breaking down. I cant believe after almost three years of listening to this musical it is now at this moment that I have come to understand so much of this plot (or maybe it is not at all about this and i just completely lost my mind) but either way I am having the time of my life right now rewatching it with a completely new perspective!!!

I really wish the published version kept the cut songs 😭. They were some of my favorites. It would be a dream if the original ‘79 version was published as well But the ending hits different tho Edit: I kind of miss the crypticness of the original. This version is much easier to understand, but it’s fun trying to read the subtext. @@CoriLane3060where can i listen to the songs that aren’t in this production? i’m sure i could find them if i looked but if you had a link you could send me that would be great!
Its about marvin trying to prove to himself he aint gay by getting into relationships with these women but then whizzer comes along and marvin accepts his sexuality. The songs represent the relationship marvin had with these women
So it’s a frame story: Up until ‘How Marvin Eats His Breakfast’ is the night he spent in Trina and his home after she found out he cheated on her with Whizzer. HMEHB up until “Breaking Down” is him laying in bed reminiscing over how his life up until that moment. Him being 14, denying he was fantasizing of men, his high school sweetheart who wanted to get physical and he refused viewing her as a friend at best. He convinced himself that he just didn’t like young women, and that Miss Goldberg was clearly the perfect woman, and he tried his best to fantasize about her putting her on an unreachable pedestal. “Marvin always gets the things he wants” “except the things he wants...” Could be a clever word play, because Miss Goldberg can clearly tell Marvin’s a gay theatre kid and is actually pleading he should “accept the things he wants” Then he gets older, meets Trina, they hit it off, we know from Falsettos that their marriage was rushed on account of Trina unexpectedly pregnant with Jason. We see this wedding. Trina is happy she gets to be his wife, Marvin views this as a funeral instead of a wedding. His future sealed. Trina suspects something’s going on. Marvin’s distant. He probably found a woman he loves more and is cheating on her! Who is this woman?! It’s Whizzer Brown and he went down Trina found out! Marvin spent one final night in their home, packed his things, had breakfast over sugar with Trina, left her a letter coming clean about his side of their marriage. He’s happy with Whizzer but it’s a big adjustment of his lifestyle. Trina tries to adjust to sleeping alone after a decade. High school sweetheart was always a bridesmaid never a bride, drinking away her sorrow as an adult, Miss Goldberg also seems to be without a lover herself. Marvin finally got his fantasy come true of everything happening in trousers only, no skirts. The Columbus stuff was an allegory of Marvin’s marriage, putting him in that role of the school play was to center him in that metaphor “Marvin’s Giddy Seizures” are absolutely an illusion for arousal. He was unable to have a giddy seizure like ‘the old days’ until right after he slept with Whizzer. A symbol for passion, a symbol of Marvin’s sexuality. He was definitely postering it as a teenager even if he didn’t actually feel attracted to that girl. She did seem to know, “is it something he made up or is it medicinal?” It’s not genuine and she knew it. But after Whizzer? His laughter and joy was genuine, it’s the brief time in the show he’s happy: Whizzer Going Down and Marvin’s Giddy Seizures (reprise)
@@fools4jules I never wanted to love you “My father cried, you’ll marry, you’ll marry” Trina’s father insisted that Trina marry Marvin so the child would not be born out of wedlock. Marvin was okay with it because he did want a child “I just wanted to see my face in yours” so he married her to keep Jason in his life, despite him knowing he is not straight
I’ve been thinking about this musical a lot lately, and I’ve noticed that in this version (1985) they have the song “I feel him slipping away” which seems to replace “your lips and me” from the 1979 version, because they seem to be saying similar things. “I feel him slipping away” is so much more direct with what it’s talking about, it spells it out for you, Trina knows that Marvin is cheating on her but believes them to be a woman. What I love about your lips and me is that it’s subtle, you get the feeling that Trina knows Marvin is unfaithful, but it also subtly mentions other things about Trina (this is a bit more my interpretation) she mentions the judgmental neighbours, and talks about how boring her life as a suburban house-wife is. It just feels like a much more intimate look at Trina as character rather than just her feelings towards Marvin. Overall the songs added into the 1985 version seem to be much more in-your-face than the 1979 songs, “I have a Family” is another one that is very straight-forward.
Yeah! I've always thought the 1985 rewrite was a more explicit version of the original for those who found it hard to understand or, as Chip once said "A fever dream" haha
I’m very sad this version takes out my chance to survive the night and nausea before the game. Those songs are very very important I feel to Marvin’s character. I think the only version that has these songs is the original version. Which is very sad but it is what it is.
Kinda sad that they eliminated "Your Lips And Me", but I also think it was a smart move because it's the song that breaks a lot of the linear sense of the musical (the parakeet not appearing in march of the falsettos, having 2 children instead of just Jason)
I agree with the two children idea, but according to interpretations, the parakeet has been seen more as a metaphor for relationships then an actual real bird because there are lots of metaphors in this lol because it's just a fever dream lol
Thank you! My native language is not english and since it's an old recording I found it a bit hard to understand at times, that's why I added subtitles! I hope it helps others like me
The lack of Nausea before the game is so sad. I’d like to imagine it’s between How The Body Falls Apart and I Feel Him Slipping Away (even though these songs have a good transition between each other) Edit: Now I’m thinking it also could be placed right before I Am Wearing A Hat and right after Love Me For What I Am (rather than before like in the soundtrack). Lol if only we could merge the soundtrack and this version of In Trousers to get the ultimate version
@@belllllaaaaa1392 Nothing is solid when it comes to In Trousers, but I always assumed it happens in the same time period as Love Me For What I Am considering that it directly precedes the song on the 1979 cast recording
@@belllllaaaaa1392 Nausea Before The Game is only in the 1979 cast recording. It is unfortunately not in this production of In Trousers as this is a later in production version of the script/musical (the 1985 version)
In my opinion they still gave his character the same way of thinking and acting through songs what was expressed well so this version didn’t need it, but I respect ur opinion ^^ love that song
i'd suggest you check out the lyrics on genius! Then the lyrics start to make sense, i remember the first time i hated it because i had no idea what i meant lol
Absolutely beautiful performance holy crap!!!!!!! This is well before it's time and an incredible depiction of Marvin as a character. Love how they use dietetic and non dietetic characters in many scenes very creative. Wish this had the rep it deserves
The fact that these people could have been friends with Tucker Carlson since he went to this school during the time these people attended and during this production is crazy
On 44:27 Trina (wife) is basically saying that Jason (their child) is the reason why Trina and Marvin’s marriage fell apart (And yes I watched Falsettos before this) Edit: I put the wrong time but I watch with captions so I just looked at the captions
in trousers has a really different song style being obvious but also metaphorical, while falsettos is literal but subtle. In trousers also feels like it has distinctive songs to show sudden snippets of a life, while falsettos have seamless musical progression. In trousers may need to be workshopped again to compensate the style difference, but it’s my wish nonetheless to see the trilogy in one.
@@shawnbay2211 Compared to Falsettos, In Trousers has little to no narrative structure and mostly shows moments in Marvin’s life in a vignette style. Because we have Marvin introduce the conflict in the beginning of the show, we already have an idea what had happened in In Trousers. I feel In Trousers is a really intriguing character study of Marvin and how he navigates through life, as well as the lives of the women in the show.

!! PLOT HOLE !! In “You Gotta Die Sometime” Whizzer expressed that his illness is even more frustrating because QUOTE “I don’t smoke, don’t do drugs and then comes the bad news”. BUT IN TROUSERS, Marvin states “he lights another cigarette” in “Whizzer is Going Down”. I feel like this was a re-write and in the most recent complete version of the musicals he doesn’t smoke, still, just a detail I noticed upon watching every recording more than 10 times.
True!! I have also seen a couple of theories abt this being either symbolism or Marvin’s recall of it rather than a literal thing. Marvin’s perspective isn’t completely accurate because of his “giddy seizures” making him an unreliable narrator (he says smth like nothings exactly like I say it is). The symbolism part is either just to emphasize that they’re sleeping together (cigarette after sex trope), or because cigarettes were typically associated with lesbians it’s to place Whizzer in a more feminine role in their relationship? Obv the musicals were written at different times but I still think they’re interesting ideas :)
I saw someone say that Whizzer never smoked the cigarette he only lit it. He could’ve lit it and handed it to Marvin. So it could still ring true that Whizzer never smoked, Marvin might have though

Okay I just discovered this and was like "why do they have the exact same character names as the characters in Falsettos (i've only watched the revival and had no idea about the fact it was a trilogy originally) THEN I READ THE DESCRIPTION AND ITS THE SAME THING??? the plot of this is very different from... the revival...
This is supposed to be kinda pre falsettos. Falsettos is made up of acts two and three.
The trilogy is In Trousers, March of the Falsettos, and Falsettoland. Falsettos is the final two of the trilogy of one act musicals
its the prequel actually, so this is marvin before coming in terms with his homosexuality

I really wish the published version kept the cut songs 😭. They were some of my favorites. It would be a dream if the original ‘79 version was published as well
But the ending hits different tho
Edit: I kind of miss the crypticness of the original. This version is much easier to understand, but it’s fun trying to read the subtext. But it makes sense of course, the average theatre goer won’t necessarily be as invested in this musical as we all are haha.

SHOULD I READ HOMEWSTUCK, FELLOW HOMESTUCK FAN?
I don’t understand a hunk of what just happened but girl I am living
“Marvin always gets the things he wants” “except the things he wants...” Could be a clever word play, because Miss Goldberg can clearly tell Marvin’s a gay theatre kid and is actually pleading he should “accept the things he wants”
Then he gets older, meets Trina, they hit it off, we know from Falsettos that their marriage was rushed on account of Trina unexpectedly pregnant with Jason. We see this wedding. Trina is happy she gets to be his wife, Marvin views this as a funeral instead of a wedding. His future sealed.
Trina suspects something’s going on. Marvin’s distant. He probably found a woman he loves more and is cheating on her! Who is this woman?!
It’s Whizzer Brown and he went down
Trina found out!
The Columbus stuff was an allegory of Marvin’s marriage, putting him in that role of the school play was to center him in that metaphor
“Marvin’s Giddy Seizures” are absolutely an illusion for arousal.
@@heath6802 this is so helpful tysm!!
@@heath6802Where in Falsettos do they say that Trina was pregnant when they got married?
@@fools4jules I never wanted to love you
“My father cried, you’ll marry, you’ll marry”
Trina’s father insisted that Trina marry Marvin so the child would not be born out of wedlock.
Yes and they also took out your lips and me which is a literal crime
@@oldprincebolkonskyiscrazya782 uhmm and marvin takes a victory shower too dont forget about that bop of a song 😤

THE CHOREOGRAPHY IS SO INTERESTING FOR THEM.

The lack of Nausea before the game is so sad. I’d like to imagine it’s between How The Body Falls Apart and I Feel Him Slipping Away (even though these songs have a good transition between each other)
Edit: Now I’m thinking it also could be placed right before I Am Wearing A Hat and right after Love Me For What I Am (rather than before like in the soundtrack). Lol if only we could merge the soundtrack and this version of In Trousers to get the ultimate version
When is Nausea Before The Game. I couldn’t pick it out
@@belllllaaaaa1392 Nothing is solid when it comes to In Trousers, but I always assumed it happens in the same time period as Love Me For What I Am considering that it directly precedes the song on the 1979 cast recording
@@belllllaaaaa1392 Nausea Before The Game is only in the 1979 cast recording. It is unfortunately not in this production of In Trousers as this is a later in production version of the script/musical (the 1985 version)

why cry??? 😭☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
I don’t know why, but I’ve always wondered what Falsettos would be if it had In Trousers as Act 1 and March of the Falsettos as Act 2
it would be chaos
I say have all 3 acts together to make a Franken-musical
in trousers has a really different song style being obvious but also metaphorical, while falsettos is literal but subtle.

Maybe he used to smoke but quit? 😅
“lights another cigarette” is a sexual metaphor lol
I saw someone say that Whizzer never smoked the cigarette he only lit it. He could’ve lit it and handed it to Marvin. So it could still ring true that Whizzer never smoked, Marvin might have though
It's a sex joke lmao
