I have always considered that"The Sound Of Music" resonated so much with audiences, not just because of its lyrics, score, and acting, as it was set in the onset of WW II and featured a successful escape when the knowledge of the millions who did not fare so well was very fresh in recent memory.
I have fond memories of watching "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music" at Christmas time. Julie Andrews is a true treasure, and while it's a shame that she doesn't appear in live action projects anymore, at least she still does voice acting work.
When mom took my older sister and me to see The Sound of Music in the theater we already had heard the soundtrack over and over because of having it at home, so with mom sitting between the two of us in the theater she was getting everything in stereo because the two of us were singing right along with the actors😂
Honorable Mentions: Tick Tick Boom, Funny Girl and Showboat (1950's version w/ Ava Gardner). I love your musical lists because I am a devout musical theatre nerd! Keep them coming 😁
I remember going to see "The Sound of Music" in the theater as a young child when it was first released. In those days, a movie that long had an intermission put in. I, however, had never been to a long movie before. The intermission came just as Maria is leaving to go back to the convent. I thought it was the end of the movie and I started crying because it wasn't fair, even 7 year old me could see how in love with each other Maria and the Captain were! Daddy got me popcorn and Mom explained what an intermission was and that no, the movie wasn't over, and I was happy again lol.
Other honorable mentions - "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Hello Dolly," "Rent," and "The Producers" - With Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
Rent??????? That musical changed my life! I have “No Day But Today” tattooed on my wrist to remind myself to live each day to the fullest. Thank you Jonathan Larson!!!
Cabaret deserved much more than an honorable mention. Though disturbing, the editing allowed it to have a profound emotional affect on the audience, something that could not be achieved by the Broadway show. The music, dancing, and acting are excellent.

@andrewbloom7637 I'd suggest watching a sideway video on it, but it's quite simple the music in les miserables is a metric nightmare, and they are just singing the wrong music. Hairspray is so infectiously feel good, that it's impossible not to love. It's a shame that Nikki Blonsky never went onto mainstream success, though she seems happy working at a hair salon.
What a spectacular compilation of extraordinary musicals!!!! All of them belong here (including honorary mentions). I think Jesus Christ Superstar could also have made the cut, with Oliver, Sweeney Todd and a few others. But this list is superb!
@FatFiber8096 yeah that's why I commented again and said the title of the video is confusing. A lot of the ones closer to the first place spot weren't stage shows beforehand
@@christianhines666 Damien Chazelle directed the film, which was both critically and commercially successful. He would be perfect to direct the film adaptation of "Sweet Smell of Success" (the 2002 stage musical version of the 1957 film of the same name, which unfortunately never got a chance to flourish upon its debut due to opening 6 months after 9/11). "Sweet Smell of Success" getting the movie musical treatment should revive mainstream public interest in the stage musical itself (and in the 1957 film).
So many people have commented with movie musicals that I agree also should be seen. So I won’t repeat those. I will add to the list though and say Rent also deserves to be watched at least once.
I've been a total Renthead since I first saw the play in 2000. Unfortunately, the movie left a lot to be desired. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend Rent: Live on Broadway. They recorded the final performance, and it's incredible!
"Mary Poppins" is one of the greatest films ever made! The real Best Picture winner of 1964! And instead of a "Mary Poppins" sequel, we should've had a 'My Fair Lady" remake with Emily Blunt as Eliza Doolittle and have that win Best Picture and Best Actress for 2018!
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is also a must see! It’s very much a rock opera/concert in the view of a transwoman being taken out of 1960’s Germany to America and becomes a rockstar - with some comedy and drama. Guys & Dolls is a good one too - although it is very “old fashioned” in the sense of comedy, music, and time period, it’s very much a classic.
This should have been at least a top 20 list! You could have included all those Honorable Mentions in the ranking plus some other movie musicals that were left off the list like say….Oliver?!?
...🤨 Cabaret, Rocky Horror and and Little Shop Of Horrors are honourable mentions? ....damn. The only reason I'm blown away MORE is that West Side Story came out in '61.😊 That's SUPER early for a film like that...sure the musical aspect is the only reason that wasn't banned lol
Two of your Ten include Julie Andrews❗ Fantastic❗as to agreeing with your picks, I might change the rankings a little, but no disagreement with the choices, including the Honorable Mentions. 🎉

My Top 4 are 1. Fiddler on the roof; 2. Oliver!; 3. West side story; 4. My Fair lady... Why? Strong stories with incredible music, and every song in each of those shows is memorable and singable. Most of the other choices don't have both of those elements to the extent that these four films have them!
You say Fiddler on the Roof was set in the 18th century. Do you realize that the 18th century was the 1700s? It was actually set in about 1905, which is the 20th century.
Mary Poppins and Grease are my faves on this list. Do you mind if I add Greatest Showman? I never imagined the origin story of Barnum Bailey circus would make a beautiful musical in spite of historical inaccuracies.
Great top 10 video. However, it pains me to see Singin In The Rain' at 1#, just because my copy of the film stopped working and have wait until I find another one, and I really do want it to watch it again.
putting cabaret as a honerable mention is an insult beside being an increadible musical and adaptation of it during its time, we need to remmeber it swept the oscars (except best picture) while the best movie considered by many was against it (godfather)
Probably because the film version wasn’t that well received, could be the same case for phantom of the Opera. The show is crazy good but no one liked the film adaption.
You know, it’s a rule in my drama club that the Musical must be geared toward the club members and us getting to perform a show we’d like to be in. Every year due to the amount of goths we have, Murder is a prerequisite in our shows. We were all visibly disappointed when our principal found out and forced us to do high school musical. We were running out of shows to do and it was either this or Chicago.

I’m a bigger fan of Mary Poppins. And yet I watch TSOM every other year around November or December
The original version of ‘West Side Story’ is still one of the best movies ever made.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers deserves a mention, certainly for the Barn Raising Dance.
I love that one so much.
You missed ‘Annie’! The ‘82 movie is the BEST. Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, and Tim Curry. Classic.

I'd like to add Burlesque to the list. So good! Also White Christmas, my all time fave 🥰
Burlesque was a combination of Chicago, Moulin Rouge and Cabaret with a dash of Showgirls for seasoning...and the recipe still didn't measure up.
OMG... How could "Hello Dolly" not have made it onto your list?!!?

You should do a top 10 or 20 list of movie musicals people never heard of sometime. I know a few that could make the list.
So do I! That's an excellent idea.
The lack of Yentl and Funny Girl is beyond me really..Barbra gave as some real gems ❤️
