Marvin's Giddy Seizures - In Trousers (1979)
“Could you like a girl like that” is so interesting to me; yes, could you like a girl LIKE THAT (as in, could you love a deeply flawed woman), but also, could you LIKE a girl like THAT (as in, are you capable of loving a woman at all). Something I love about In Trousers is the non-linearity of each character. When Marvin sings as his adult self, he also sings as his 14-year-old self, and vice versa. There is a bit of every iteration in each character. So when Trina sings a line such as “could you like a girl like that”, with its obvious double meaning, we hear her insecure younger self and bitter, wiser older self speak as one. I find this younger Trina’s point of view so very compelling. A girl raised in a strict, religious household ( _very middle class, very Jewish, and very straight_ ) in the mid 20th century, likely socialised to be a housewife and to be subservient above all else. And it’s hinted that Trina and Marvin married very young, meaning Trina probably hasn’t had the time to establish any identity for herself outside being a mother and a wife. So when her husband does not love her, does this not mean she has failed her only purpose? As a wife, as a woman, as a human, she is a failure. But it’s not her fault. And that’s where her bitter older self comes in, relenting that it never _was_ her fault. It couldn’t have possibly been her fault. Anyways. I really oughta go and touch grass or smthn.
2:30 <- for me
Does anyone have the full monologue? I heard it came with records or smth
I think about this song all the time. 'The Rape of Miss Goldberg' is a self-directed production of a fantasy Marvin doesn’t _really_ want to have. Essentially, it's an attempt to convince himself he is heterosexual, to conceal his queerness. I’ve always interpreted Miss Goldberg’s lack of consent/enthusiasm in this scene as Marvin’s own mind betraying the fantasy, a sort of intrusive thought reminding himself that he is, unavoidably, a homosexual, who does not want the fantasy to occur. Which makes sense, as Miss Goldberg often represents Marvin’s rational internal voice throughout the show. Marvin’s pestering of her is not a disrespect for her refusal of consent, but the desperate pleas of a delusional teenager trying to drown out reality - and, simultaneously, the whining of a child who wants something unpleasant to be over quicker. It makes sense that someone as averse to heterosexual sex as Marvin would try to fight _through_ Miss Goldberg’s disinterest, rather than accept it - after all, this is how he treats himself. Or something like that.
bringing this into the new year
Alison Fraser is a goddess or smth I swear!
William Finn is kinda insane and I Stan it (like who comes up with this?)
1:59 Timestamp for me ig
the dying swans, the nausea, the game…
Mind you I haven't listened to all of in trousers yet: I feel like Marvin equalates making food for him to loving him. I think this song, in particular, is Marvin being angry that he isn't being loved "properly". But he only thinks that because he's just not into women but forcing himself to be (Alla Ms. Goldberg and Trina). Marvin also likes people cooking for him because it makes him feel better about himself (Like when he said he felt smart when whizzer cooks) (It also could be another thing he uses to curate the image of a perfect tight-knit family)
OH... He's going down like that.
my ringtone
"The R---- of Miss Goldberg?" Really? Are we SO infantilized that we cannot tolerate simple, plain English? I mean, EVERYBODY knows what the dashes signify, right? So, what, exactly, is the point? George Carlin, despite his rebarbative politics, would be all over this, as yet another example of Murrican squeamishness and cowardice. Oh, for a return of sanity....
I think the censorship is purely so the video does not get demonetised or shadow banned. It’s sort of ironic in a way, the need for censorship to avoid censorship.
this was my top song of youtube music wrapped 😭😭
Hey me too
4:05
1:03 … “I don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, and then comes the bad news.” ???
All day the "relax relax relax" part has been replaying on my head😭🙏
1:15 “i know this girl. i call her my wife, she is my wife.” this line is so crazy to me. marvin rlly never loved trina at all. she was just someone he thought he needed in his life
1:58 “if i touch her would she let me fall asleep” trina asking marvin for sex when he doesn’t want it. if he just does it, will she leave him to sleep? 2:06 “we’re waiting for the whistle sound, she strokes my head and turns around, i hear my name, the nausea. the game.” waiting for the whistle sound is waiting for orgasm. then she turns bc thats how marvin likes it. the nausea of having hetero sex. and the game of doing it. i LOVE this song.
in theater a 'trouser role' is when a woman plays a male role and many insults for gay men relate to their (supposed) feminity
"life is rotten and thankfully short, thankfully short" and it's even shorter than expected cuz he dies of aids. aids wasn't a thing when this was written, or even when act 1 of Falsettos was. but holy sh*t, i think the actual implication is supposed to be he's depressed and possibly suicidal, but he dosn't even get to choose to live a whole life. he heals enough through Falsettos that he might have made that choice, even if it's just to see Jason grow uo, but he doesn't get to. his life is short, end of sentence
Honestly the writing in each version I have heard is amazing honestly my favorite is the 1985 college version but idk if that’s the actual 1985 version
Filmed Performances of this number, that I have found: PHTS-2008: ua-cam.com/video/NcqpcJYxra4/v-deo.html
Marvin sure is feelin’ confident about this chess game.
honestly...marvin is kind of a dream role for me, as weird as that might sound. i love this unhinged little dude so much and his songs are so fun
both songs get stuck in my head so often fjgjkgjgj...the ones with the most awkward titles to mention out loud lmao
When you're just tryna take a shower but your wife, teacher and high school girlfriend won't stop narrating
I hate when that happens
POV: me after cheating on my boyfriend of four years that I never loved with a girl I never liked (I'm ace)
This song is one of he most disliked songs from in trousers but it's so pretty
Ngl 'eggies over spinach over toast' kinda slaps as a meal
Marvin always eats
I was going to say this was one of my least favorite songs but the start holy hell I LOVE MRS GOLDBERGGGGGG (jk but the voiceeeee the partssss omg)
Idk this is my fav in trousers song ngl
This gives my "well... I must like it right... I have to like it.. I guess I gotta screw everyone that wants to so I can learn to like it" phase as n ace person
As someone who always feels nauseous for no apparent reason I love this song so much EDIT: I broke up with my boyfriend and cut off the girl I was cheating on him with (I'm ace)
I'm supposed to be writing a falsettos fanfic but it's turning into an in trousers fanfic lol
LOL
She is drunk and Marvin's highschool sweetheart right... His highschool sweetheart drinks a lot. "Sis" drinks a lot (and kills herself) I think Sis is sweetheart guys cause she is mentioned as if a character but is not
I need to cover this
This song is about a very straight boy... very...
i miss you, in trousers (i’ve never seen this musical in my life)
200th comment 🫶
this is such a good fucking song i am so heartbroken only one performance was filmed
During this song, the sweetheart sings "...Then drink beer, Then I weep, Say a prayer and induce, Insincere self abuse." And in In Trousers: The Dream, it says one of the four women "...drank beer, And went and killed herself" Is this implying that Marvin's first love killed herself?
Isnt it supposed to say, "I saw them in the den, eith Marvin stuck in whizzers ass."???? that's my favorite line in this version :(
It's not in this version
marvin’s “Does he!?” make me giggle
SCRUBBYDUBBYDUBBYDUBBYDUBBYSCRUBBYDUBBYDUBBY FOR MARVINNNNNNNNNNNNN
( FOR MARVIN )
I know no one's probably going to be commenting now but at 1:31 what does the highschool sweetheart sing. I know she's there but I can't make out what she's singing
pretty sure it's a round of them all singing "here i sit, drunk and self-indulgent" but at various speeds
@flyingshelf9469 yeah I'm pretty sure that's right.
