"the things about explorers is, they discover things that are already there. columbus closed his diary and went ashore" how is this one line so beautiful, poignant and thought provoking and then suddenly SCRUBBA DUBBA DUBBY, SCRUBBA DUBBA DUBBY-
I love this so much. Although Marvin boasts his ego in this song (slipping into his 14-year-old voice in the process), the illusion is quickly broken by the cacophony of voices from his past...in my eyes, the emphasis on Miss Goldberg, despite her being the only woman Marvin presumably never actually harmed beyond twisted fantasy, shows Marvin's crushing guilt over his objectification of her and his imagined assault of her. Even though it was a childish parody of said assault, it haunts him. I understand when people write off Marvin's ending as him getting an undeservedly happy life (well, in the confines of this first part of the trilogy) and never thinking back on the women he hurt, but I really believe Marvin regrets his treatment of them, to the point of it distorting even his anthem of self-cleansing. Even a happy, victorious moment is tainted by his own guilt. It reminds me of the women's voices in the background of Whizzer Going Down; even as Marvin is in a state of utter euphoria, perhaps the happiest we see him in any song, they cling to his memories. The ghostly "I am wearing a hat" in particular indicates his mind is fixated on regretting his own weaponisation of patriarchy and treatment of Trina. I think that's so sad and poetic...I can't help but feel very bad for Marvin no matter how he acts, and to me that shows what a masterpiece this musical is. I could talk about it forever!!
FR!! that part when marvin's yelling 'stop it' always gives me chills. this whole song comes off to me like he's trying to suppress his pain and convince himself it was all worth it

Pokemonique I just wanted to point out she wasn’t raped in the show, as far as I know it was just Marvin’s imagination, he was trying to convince himself he was straight in a really fucked up way, that’s why in ‘the rape of miss Goldberg’ the ladies announce scenes, because it’s not really happening in the storyline
Ok, so, my theory is this: It's referenced in "My Highschool Sweetheart" that Ms. Goldberg cast Marvin in her play. My theory is that the play was about Columbus, with Marvin in the starring role. "Go ahead, play Columbus, stop begging," "I am Columbus." And now, we hear the final words Marvin (as Columbus) speaks. We see a lot of references to Columbus throughout this show, especially in the beginning of "Set Those Sails." I don't have this theory completely fleshed out but I'm sure someone smarter than me will pick apart what it means.
He speaks of how Columbus discovers things already there which may be mirroring him discovering and accepting his sexual orientation and exploring that side of himself. Not entirely sure though
Candy Lloyd yeah there are also parallels in columbus mistaking native americans for indians and marvin think his feelings relating to girls were romantic, but again, it's a reach.
If the theory is that the play is about colombus, the play "how America got it's name" is an actual scene played out by Marvin and the gals that you can find performances of. People just aren't interested in listening to dialouge so it isn't recorded.
Personally I also like to interpret Columbus' selfish claim over America even though it does not belong to him parallels Marvin and Ms Goldberg's relationship throughout the play, with Marvin thinking she belongs to him and laying claim over her even though she's her own person.
I assumed it’s like the wish you make when you blow out b-day candles: “contents of which he cannot reveal” bc there’s that superstition that if you reveal a wish the wish is broken, and he’s a 14 yo boy so he probably wished abt something dirty w miss goldberg. This whole little song is probably just meant to sum up marvin’s greedy and indulgent personality which lines up well w the first act of Falsettos.
