You mage 1t behind so you dont have to wait 3 ticks to get back on tick with olm, and since lancing is 1t behind aswell you dont have to lose a tick to get back 1t behind when going to melee hand so you end up saving 4 ticks If you do the starts showed here and dont lose any ticks while mage running you would only need to do it on p3 after lowering the melee hand or after hammering twice on any phase
You also need to be maging in the 1 tick behind cycle to maintain 4:0 for p3 without any tickloss. I personally don’t like maging 1 tick behind if I don’t have to just out of personal preference but there are scenarios like when you have to use 2 hammers in your phase start as ryksyy said or transitioning in and out of 4:0 where youd lose 3 ticks by not doing it (to get back on the on tick mage cycle as ryksyy said) so in those 2 scenarios is where maging 1 tick behind is optimal beyond just personal preference. If any of that is unclear please let us know and I can upload a clip in a reply comment showing and explaining exactly what we mean.
I don’t generally speculate on future content until it’s here because it often changes but you can do 4:1 with it as you can with ibans and depending on the range of the staff you would be able to do a no dmg method using 2 and 3 tick behind mage running.
I do its in the description of my world scythe guide and while you can "technically" save ticks doing it assuming you off tick with scythe when you transition to melee hand, the actual method itself can not as forgiving with things like lightning when you splash so its not really practical to use.

When shadow for TOA comes out, what do you think optimal methods will be since it will be 5 tick?
