super idea!
Thanks Mr. Immler, that means a lot coming from you.
McGyver himself!
@@CaptainPupu Haa ha haa, thanks a lot Captain Poop 😂
The master is here. Hugs from Brazil, Mr. Immler.
SAK God in da house.
Ever thought of replacing the nail file on the Cadet Alox with a scissors...? That would be an awesome project. You rock, man! Cheers...
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I have added scissors to a Cadet, but as their own layer ( ua-cam.com/video/2lcbzKeZI6E/v-deo.htmlsi=dDMpAgx_29YzwwaI ). If you replace the nail file, you would also have to remove the blade, they are in the same layer, because the scissors require their own layer.
I always felt that Swiss army should make this knife
You mean Victorinox. There is no such company as 'Swiss Army'.
I know I'm here a little late. Very nice mod, good job with simple tools. I did almost the same thing to myself with a Victorinox Harvester with a hook blade instead of the can opener. With the Lansky set, I grinded it down to a scandi-style carving blade.
Very cool, I bet that is a nice knife.
I had actually found the exact same knife but it's called the harvester.. it already had a hawkbill blade in that spot. I just turned it into a warncliff style and it works great
Yeah, I have looked at that knife. I believe they call it the, "Swiss Army 7," now. Making the pruning blade into a warncliff does give a very similar result to my knife, but my knife does have a slightly harder steel for the whittling blade. That said, I don't mind using Victorinox stainless for whittling. Also, my knife has the key ring loop, which seems to be a real love or hate kind of thing, I love it for attaching a pocket clip.
Just imagine if victorinox let you customize their knives, and pick and choose the tools.... 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Very cool modification and relaxing presentation. Thanks for sharing sir
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing such a detailed project.
That is truly awesome. I wish I had one. I’ve modified the small blades on a couple of knives for carving, and the steel I like best is on the inexpensive Rough Rider knives. It holds an edge even better than my more expensive Case and GEC knives. But your solution is the best by far!
Just an excellent video, many thanks for making this and sharing. You sir are a genius and what you produced is a real improvement. I also have the farmer and can really see the advantage with doing this. Many thanks best Gray
This would definitly a knife I would buy immediately!
The reamer placed on top is already great!
Don't like the centre/back reamers on the plastic models.
But I cannot do what you did so hopefully Victorinox will bring out the pioneer whittler one day.
Another thing I really would like to have is a simple flat little fork on my edc.
Victorinox never incorporated a little fork on any of their knives besides the cheese master which is a useless piece of equipment overall.
Anyway, great video!
Maybe I found a simple solution for people without the possibilities for this modification.
Take a pioneer 7 and change the cutting edge of the pruner and re-sharpen it.
It's not a tough blade but it's at least something that most people can do :-)
I thought about doing exactly that when I first started exploring the idea for this knife. I didn't go that route because, like you said, I was really looking for a harder steal for the whittling blade, and I didn't already have a Swiss Army 7 Knife. I do really like the idea though, and if I had a Swiss Army 7, I would probably end up reshaping the smaller blade to better suit my needs.
Awesome job!! This is exactly what I want to do with my SAK. Also want to add a Spiderco blade.
Very nice! Good job!
PS: What I would like is a Vic Electrician with combo opener instead of the bottle opener. In magnificent red, of course. :D
Thanks. I still haven't gotten my hands on an electrician, but I will someday.
Very well done. Great Video I am currently looking to do something similar. Thanks for the inspiration.
Very nice! I think that should be the secondary blade on all the Victorinox SAKs! 😁
Me too!
Great video thanks ☺️. Great knife 🔪 modification.
Nice modification ! 😊
You can buy carving blades without the handles- they are made for the knife sets with changeable blades. This would save you the trouble of cutting off a handle, and usually save you money as well.
Yeah, I thought about that, but I already had this knife, and it wasn't seeing much use. If I were to make another, I would for sure buy a blade without a handle, but this time around this was the cheaper option. Thanks for the suggestion though, and for watching. :-)
Clever project very well done, thanks.
Glad you liked it.
excellent
I was considering the same idea and here you've already done it. Lol It's nice to see that it actually works. Do you mind if I ask what Flexcut model you used.
I believe Flexcut calls it a detail knife. It worked out pretty well.
Thank you!
I've always been curious about what the tang of Flexcut knives looked like! Thought about making new handles for a couple of them
My pleasure, I was curious too. The only trick is getting them out of the handle, that epoxy or whatever they use to hold the blade in place is some pretty good stuff.
Flexcut sells blades, without handles, for its line of knives with interchangeable blades. Consider using one of those if you want to make a new handle. It would let you skip the “digging the blade out of the factory handle” step.
@@censusgary They don't make knives in the replaceable handle group, just gouges.
FWIW - I did a tutorial at Instructables on making handles for Flexcut interchangeable blades.
www.instructables.com/Making-a-Flexcut-Palm-ChiselGouge-Handle/
Came here from Reddit. 👍
Sharpen the can opener to make a curved blade for carving bowls and spoons. Sharpen the large screw driver to make a chisel.
I removed the can opener for this mod, so I don't think that will work out. I have thought about sharpening the screwdriver into a chisel, but pushing on the non locking blade like that makes me a bit nervous. Do you have experience with this mod? Does it workout because of how you hold it, or do you have to be super careful not to close it on your fingers?
Josh's Shop my screwdriver blade is locking, thats why it makes a great chisel.
@@georgerector9252 Ah that would be cool.
File out that stupid keyring hole, and you're set!! Good job!!
Ha, thanks. I know the key ring nub really bothers some people, but I actually don't mind it, I find it is rarely in my way, and I really like being able to carry my knife on a suspension clip.
@@JoshsShop It depends on how you use the knife. If you use it for common cutting tasks that we all use from day to day, it's great to have it, however, if you start using it for wood whittling, it's a pain and a discomfort. I also liked it for the same reasons, until I used the Harvester that comes without it!
Keep em shapr and stay safe!!
Awesome job man!
Awesome idea....... wonder if SAK will consider a SAK whittler knife version cos some of those legacy tools like the bottle|can opener are outdated. Upgrading their steel would be a plus.
It would be cool, but I would be surprised if they ever do. Seems like if they were going to, they would have already.
@@JoshsShop Victorinox is very Swiss so more evolutionary than revolutionary.....their standard products leverage the old platform and is a low-risk model that overlapped with the ''urbanization'' trend. I wont be surprised if their innovation team are scouring channels like yours for ideas and trends. Seems to me more guys are ''de-urbanizing'' so fingers crossed SAK goes more bushcraft.
I will cross my fingers as well
Good work!
Now, my brother, please tell me you put some lube on that knife pivot when you finished the conversion.
Thanks, and yes I did, although I didn't think to film it. Once finished she got a good scrub down and a light oiling.
This is a really neat modification. After you made the groove that allows you to get your nail in the blade did you have to go back and remove any sharp edges? Really Enjoyed this video.
Thanks. I may have just been lucky but adding the nail nick didn't raise any sharp edges that needed smoothing.
Cool! 👍
I so would love to have a Victorynox like this. But don't have all those machinery to do it.
I’d really like one of these farmers but I hate aluminum. I know they sell after market titanium scales but… we’re talking a pretty big price tag after everything
Yeah, I have looked at those titanium scales and have never been able to convince myself to pay that much, they look nice though.
How come Victorinox does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.
Sounds good to me. I don't expect we will ever see anything like that, but it would be sweet.
Why does everyone mod the can opener. For me, it's the most useful too. It's a great can opener! Plus, in this case, you can mod the can opener into a handy curved carving tool really easily. Then you would have three blades to carve with. Ditch the useless bottle opener. It's almost as lame as the cork screw....maybe more, since I have used the cork screw several times.
Interesting. I very rarely use the can opener on my knife, which is why that is the tool I replaced on this knife. I do use the bottle opener tool often though, mostly as a pry bar, scraper, and screwdriver. I see what you are saying about turning the bottle opener into a curved carving tool, but that isn't something I was interested in. It could be done though, you would just have to switch things around a bit.
Josh's Shop I don't know if you're aware of Felix Immler's channel. I think he does every trick there is with these knives. Really fun channel that I've been binging on during the shutdowns we have going on. Really all there is to do is sharpen the edge, and grind off the grippy part. I have a simple 2 blade, 2 tool one at home, and that's my dedicated kitchen can opener. A tiny bit of practice and you can open a can as fast or faster than any can opener, and it never wears out, amd most importantly, doesn't get all gross and nasty because it's so easy to clean.
Anyway, we all customize to fit our own needs. I only mentioned it because it seemed to me the poor can opener always seems to get the shaft. 🙂
The bottle opener I was thinking about putting a slight edge on to turn it into a scraper, which I think would be more useful, but I know the day I do, I'll need that dam screwdriver! 😃
@@jimf1964 I am aware of Mr. iImmler, he's great. He even commented on this video, which I'm pretty sure was the peak of 2020 for me. 😁
I know exactly what you mean. The second I don't have a tool is pretty much always the exact moment I need it.
Josh's Shop That's so cool. Getting a comment from him is like you've made it in the entertainment field. 🙂
I've used these knives for decades, but they sort of fell out of my choice. Thanks to Felix I've renewed interest in them. There are better knives, but for the money, they're hard to beat.
The most useless tool on sak is the hook.i think not even victorinox knows its use and hoped people try to find silly uses like moving pottery from fire or tye shoelaces 😂 . I can imagine a dialog in victorinox factory going: - Mark we need a back spring tentioner. - use the corkscrew.-did it ,need anotherone on the same knife.- use a philips screwdriver.- done , need something else.-awl? - used it,something else? -here put this.- why its too small to use?!!! - because its a hook!!! And we are victorinox!!!! - hanging around with Steve Jobs is not good for you!
Keep the can opener, dude! The tip on it can drive Phillips-head screws. Knock off that silly cap lifter!
Ha, everybody has different preferences. I get a lot more use out of the cap lifter than the can opener. Thus the choice. To each his own I suppose, thanks for watching 🤪
I would love to do this mod! 😍
But to chicken to do it!
So, have you tried this with a blade from a Flexcut pocket folder?
I haven't. I have a carvin' jack and a whittlin' jack (if I remember the names correctly) and I couldn't bring myself to fiddle with them. I like them the way they are too much, but I wasn't really using this bench knife much, so I didn't mind if I messed it up.
@@JoshsShop I don't blame you. I may try it myself, and hope not to wreck it all
Hi, just wondering if you would sell a knife like that and if you did how much.
I am so slow at the process that it would need to cost way too much to be economical for anyone.
How much for one that’s what I need in my pocket very well done
😁 thanks. This took me so long that I would have to charge a silly amount inorder to make it worth my time, it wasn't that hard though, if you have the basic tools, you could do it.
@@JoshsShop haha...silly amount must be 10 times the actual cost of knife 😆
Yup I went through a phase of modding these knives replacing pioneer alox handles with carbon fibre, parts were about £20 plus cost of knife, but took about 6-8 hours per knife (lots of hand sanding) so selling at cost plus only £10 per hour labour would price the knife over £130. No one is gonna pay that! Also extra costs for waste (my own mistakes!). This kind of thing is really a labour of love ❤️
Is it possible to add metal file instead of whittling knife? Or will i need extra scale instead of spacer?
If you remove both openers, you could probably get tricky and add a file from one of the 91mm models, or like you say, get/make another spacer and back spring, then add the file as an additional layer. Either way, you would probably have to completely disassemble the knife which can get a little tricky, but is completely doable.
And thats why I purchased a second farmer to use as a donor. Andalso a climber or mountaineer , idont remember the name, that has file to get. Stupidity to disassemble 3 knives to make 1? Yes. Do i care? Nope.
Sounds fun, I hope it works out well.
How much for one of these! Name a price lol
Ha, I'm glad you like it, but because it takes me so long to do it, I would have to charge like $250 to make it worth my time, which seems like a ludicrous amount of money for what it is.
Can you add a scissor to a cadet?
It is tricky but possible, I did it here: ua-cam.com/video/2lcbzKeZI6E/v-deo.html
Wy didn t you show the other side of the pin?😂
Ha, I wasn't avoiding showing it intentionally, it looks just as good as the shield side. 😁
This is 2020. WTH Mic were you using, something from 1928?
Otherwise, a great vid.
I have a Victorinox with a large & small blade. I was toying with the idea of modifying the small blade.
This was one of my first videos, and I am learning a lot about video recording and editing as I go. I think I have improved some, but I am continuing to do so as I go. Hopefully the quality of the recording and editing doesn't detract from the content too much. Thanks for the feedback, and I am glad you appreciated the video.
As for the small blade on your Vic, have you checked out Felix Immlers video on modifying the small blade: ua-cam.com/video/JbkbTnDM-LI/v-deo.html I think it is a nice shape for whittling and I have done it to several of my knives.
Just get a Swiss Army 7 Harvester instead !!!
I did consider that, but the steel on the flex cut blade is a superior steel for carving, so I decided to go with this crazy mod. Also, I already had this stuff. 😁
You're NUTS! Removing your CAN OPENER????! Remove the bottle opener instead.
I never use the can opener, but I use the bottle opener and flat screwdriver often. Do you use the can opener?
