You taught me so much in 30 minutes & you made it look like so much fun . I'm a newbie-wannabe bushcrafter at 51 years old & Just ordered my Swiss this weekend...
I find the back of the saw on SAK a nice striker. On my SAK (forget the model name) there is enough of the saw back sticking above the other blades that it can be used to throw sparks even in the closed position.
After this video I tested that out and found the back of the saw to be a very good striker. I put a link to that video in the description. Thanks for watching!
Plan on getting the hiker, 1 big blade, small blade, and a saw really does it for me Update: When this was made I had to get the Camper because they didn’t have any hikers left where I went. I ended up losing that knife in a camping trip. A while later I got a Hiker and soon after that a Ranger. I can say I love them both and would recommend them to anyone.
Hi ! I’m curious - from your experience do you prefer to carry thinner (and lighter) knife like the Hiker/Camper or one that is thicker but has more tools like the Ranger? Also do you prefer having a cork screw or Phillips screwdriver on the back?
Cool. The Hiker was my first Swiss Army Knife too. I bought it in 1995 and still have it, together with another 19 Victorinox knives. I personally prefer models that come with scissors but you can't go wrong with either the Hiker or Farmer for the outdoors. I own both models by the way.. Great video. Thanks everybody.
It's been almost 6 years... I often watch ur video. Sometimes it put me in deep thoughts. But always happy to see how you really do things cut fish, make fire, talk about Swiss Army knife. Always love knife Always remember you Brother REST IN PEACE
This video is great! I expected another Victorinox review - I've seen a lot of those, many good, some worse - but this one was entirely different. And so full of life! Thank you! :)
My EDC SAK is the no longer made Outrider, which has locking blade. Very similar to the Trekker. The Huntsman is my favorite thou. And it saw blade actually saved my life when I was out in the wood and completely tore my patella tendon. That's a long story and for a different time. What I call my Gentleman's carry is the Climber. Everything of the Huntsman but the saw. That my going to the movies, dinner, church knife. I gave Farmers as groomsmen gifts at my weddings. .Nothing better than fresh trout for supper! As usual, great job.
Fair comparison..me I like the hiker because of secondary blade plus the tweezers and the straight pin in the handle by Phillips..that said..can't lose either way and I subscribed..love a fair and equal comparison.
This is absolutely awesome review in the real survival scenario. Most of the reviews here are done just sitting at the table and flipping knife in the hands. Thank you! By the way, I have ordered Farmer for myself.
I had just subscribed. I feel good with him as teacher - he’s so positive, not at all condescending. Not a show-off disguising as instructor or product-reviewer, but just truly friendly and even funny. I learned a lot already from the two videos I’ve watched so far - about the SAK Farmer. I just ordered the Farmer today and am looking forward to using it as I start my adventure as a newbie in bushcraft and backwoods camping. Thank you, MegaWoodsWalker!!
I was a bit worried as the sharp side of the saw would be facing my hand and it doesn't lock so didn't do that. But then again maybe I should give it a go! Thanks for watching.
MegaWoodswalker Important to keep the rod contact near the knife handle. The sharp corners of the saw back really whip up a big spark shower. I don't own a Farmer, but a point to add about alox knives is that for food prep gore doesn't get under the scales. So a plus for hygiene. Both great knives though !
I only had the time to watch the last 3 minutes now, so you might have mentioned this before... If you like the Farmer, take a look at teh Harvester or the Electrician plus. Those have a small blade (hawkbill / sheepsfoot) instead of the can opener. If you don't have canned food with you, I think those are perfect outdoor knives.
The 5th gen Swiss Army Soldier knife was derived from the Pioneer (Farmer w/o saw) . And there you have the Swiss Army's opinion of the better knife. The 91 mm SAK's are derived from the 1897 "Officer's and Sports" model and, to my knowledge, none of them have ever been standard issue by any military. They're very good/useful knives,IMO, but it appears that professionals prefer other options. The inline reamer is enough to cause me to prefer the Farmer.
I’ve carried the hiker but recently lost it, I’ve looked at the field master but was afraid it’d be too large for comfortable pocket carry. I have a leather man wingman that I stopped carrying because of weight and bulk
Jubrail memon - fieldmaster is a solid choice. I carry one daily and is my primary slingshot equipment ( easily makes tree forks and Atlatl throwers and spears). All around great general use set up.
Hey, I'd recommend pinning the firesteel down in the woodshavings pile when you try to light it. I find it works best than if you hold it in the air, the pressure is not so strong.
The Philip's screwdriver is the thing that makes the hiker for me. Ive got a tinker, hiker, handyman and champ as well as a swisstool but the hiker is my go to, everyday knife. Saying that im still tempted to get a farmer lol
Yes the Philips is nice. Honestly it's hard to go wrong. I am doing a SAK GAW right now. Thanks for watching!ua-cam.com/video/Y19mpeHKF20/v-deo.html&lc=UgwRyVcdHVm_gfBcx_h4AaABAg
Just because I am tough on knives, I would go with the Farmer. Built for a day in the woods. You clean a fish very well. Over all a great review. Thanks.
Thanks for the whole experience 👍 Have you tried using the backside of the saw as a striker? Would be an interesting comparison! Seems like that part of the SAK is even less prone to wear or something you might need further ahead on your hike.
I prefer the Huntsman to both of these (or even the Outrider which is a bit larger and the blade locks). It has scissors and a bottle open so you can cut some bandage or you know open a bottle when its a wine emergency. It even has a tooth pick, which isn't always useful in itself but it does mean you can remove it and put a firefly steel in it's place. That way you'll always have a spare fire steel.
Goodnight Mr. Trout! 3:58 I think maybe the reamer on the Farmer could have also worked for dispatching the trout, if a short blade was needed. It does have an edge. But overall, the Hiker between the two seems better to me cause of having two blades, and also tweezers and toothpick. Just more to work with. The back edge of the saw blade also works for ferro rods, saving your sharp edges on the other tools. Both, the Hiker and the Farmer seem like great knives, but for outdoors use, I’d get the Camper over the Hiker for the corkscrew it adds. Works great for untying paracord knots and picking out wind knots and backlashes in fishing line.
"Like a 'Bloomin' Onion'" LOL. I agree with some of the other comments, the back of the saw is the way to go when striking the ferro rod. I actually just learned it and tried it for the first time about 5 minutes ago. Thanks peeps.
Having carried a Farmer for over, well over 10 years I can say without hesitation it is one of my favorite knives. I have done a wilderness overnight in the Hoosier National Forest in the late Winter/early Spring with the Farmer as my only tool. I built a shelter, a fire and food prep all with the Farmer. Good video; but you repeat yourself a lot, just saying.
Great video! If I use a magnesium block, I don't scrape it, but rather kind of whittle the metal in shavings and they go up very nicely and hot, even if the tinder is damp. I think it burns at 1800 degrees or something very high and magnesium burns under water too.
Good Job mate. Between, can opener and bottle openers fits right in to the Philip heads, so a farmer not having a dedicated Philips doesn't matter, hence it's better over hiker in my opinion. And, one can always strike fire at the back of the knives in their closed position. Have a good one.
I have the Camper, which is a Hiker minus the phillips screwdriver + a corkscrew. I added plus scales so it has an ink pen, straight pin, and eyeglasses screwdriver. It will be my go-to for camping.
I'm not a survivalist or anything but I have tried the back of the saw on my Voctorinox one-handed Trekker to strike a ferro rod and it works. So that could give the Hiker and edge up on the farmer, with the saw serving double duty and a secondary blade.
Nathan Garza. This is not a challenge or pissing match but I just don't see how the Hiker has "one up" on the Farmer? The Farmer has a longer/thicker/stronger blade, the same exact saw, a superior awl that throws sparks better than the small blade or the back of the saw, and more structurally rugged construction with solid aluminum scales compared to thin aluminum sheeting with a hollow plastic overlay. Not to mention that the Farmer's awl position/design does a much better job of wood working such as fabricating fire boards and the like. The Farmer actually does a more efficient job than the Hiker in the same size package with more usable/robust tools and stouter construction. This can be quantified, observed, and repeated. But to each their own. They are both great pocket knives and I have no plans on getting rid of either my Hiker or Farmer. My Hiker lives in a "BOB" accessible to my family and my Farmer lives in my back pocket everyday without fail, as it has for years. Be safe out there.
If you use the back of the saw blade it will work great on your magnesium, you will get curls of magnesium if you use it on the edge of the block. the back of the saw blade make good strikers. Try that with both knife and you opinion my change. Thanks for the video.
The magnesium ferro rod combo (preferably Doan) is ideal for these environments: 1) extremely cold (like Alaska in the winter), 2) high altitude/low oxigen, and 3) high humidity plus coldness. For most other environments, a BIC lighter will do the trick more efficiently than any ferro rod.
Using the back of the saw blade saves your small blade... also the harvester is a great knife too with that hawkbill blade. I usually carry the bantam for the extra small blade and can opener missing from harvester..
Great video. Hope you enjoyed making it as much as I enjoyed watching it. I'd prefer the farmer. The reamer, as all the blades, are easier to use out the end as opposed to the middle, IMHO.
Nice mood and I like the enthusiasm. If you really want to strike a rod with an SAK, just try the back of the saw. It has an amazing 90 degree angle and you don’t have to worry about damaging any blade or any other tool on your SAK. Cheers and keep up the happy face 😀👍
I've never owned a Hiker. My SAK of choice is a Farmer. The awl is the deal breaker imo. Absolutely the best ferro rod scraper. What a fantastic find in that trout! Great video! Two thumbs up!
Fantastic positive mental attitude, great skills, particularly liked the foraging. Looked very comfortable in your environment, that's a state of mind people undervalue, no use being in the woods if you're scared of getting your hands dirty. I gave up on magnesium bars many moons ago, even a slight breeze makes them difficult to use. Tricky doing a comparison of these knives if discounting the saws, they are incredibly useful. If you live in an area with blackberry bushes tweezers are incredibly useful. The thorns on last years bushes are rotting late winter/early spring and will infect cuts they make if not all the thorn is removed from the cut, so it's Hiker for me (well, I have the Camper, a Hiker with a corkscrew). Thanks for the vid!
I used to carry my champ all the time but now I carry a tinker since it sits nicer in the pocket. Might go back to the Swiss champ if I get a holster for it.
Nice video. I think the cap opener / large screwdriver on the Farmer is also beefier and slightly bigger, or more confidently shaped too than the regular sak.
You just made me hungry! Great review! The back of the saw blade on either knife works great as a striker for a ferro rod. Put with a fixed blade and a forest axe you are set for camp task.
Get a little closer to the tinder when your doing this, the method you use is perfect for getting in close without messing up the tinder, but when your far with it the sparks just hit the ground.
This guy's video convinced me to carry my sak in addition to my full tang knife. I've nixed my multitool with pliers and have been super happy with my backpacking kit.
Good video, These knives can often be overlooked I have the small classic and its used everyday. wouldn't be without one. oh, and that trout looked good too. nice job.
For me personally ferro rod plus SAK it's always been the spine of the woodsaw as a striker, of course if you wish to stiffen the blade during the stroke careful thumb placement is required
Good video. I have the Hiker. I do wish that it had a more robust blade similar to the Farmer. But in a wilderness situation it is a very helpful, backup to a fixed blade knife. In a city scenario where I think sh-- may hit the fan and I may have to flee to a wilderness setting, I usually carry a Leatherman due to the pliers in it. But as I stated below in response to one of your viewers/critics, they are very similar in every other regards. More importantly, it's easier to go unnoticed with the Hiker in my pocket.
Curious place internet, you randomly watch a good video comparing two knifes you're interested in, go to see the comments and find that the man is dead 😢, rest in peace man, you did a good job.
You're supposed to use the back of the saw to use on ferro rods, and on the Hiker if you open the main posidrive screwdriver and look where it pivots you will see a tiny hole in the scale to store a pin.
One of the knives in my EDC is a Hiker. I usually have four knives on me, one of which is a fixed blade. Three of them vary, but the Hiker is always in my pocket! I've found I use the philips and the small blade the most. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video!
I get fishing, but the whole time the trout isn't in the water, it is suffocating. If you're not doing catch and release, it's much more humane to dispatch the fish immediately. I don't think anyone would want to partially drown for a few minutes, waiting on the death-blow.
Great vídeo mate. Im a collector of saks and bushcrafter. They are my knives always. I love the farmers for their heavier capabilities, but any will do, really..
One of those 1/2 X 5 inch blanks for ebay or Amazon. I added the Kydex.www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-x-5-Ferrocerium-Rod-Flint-Fire-Starter-Magnesium-Tool-Kits-Camping-Large/291826211786?epid=1481520226&hash=item43f2329bca:g:4KYAAOSwbsBXk472:sc:USPSFirstClass!06468!US!-1:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true
I have a couple of Hikers and was tempted by the Farmer, but can’t justify £30 for the Farmer when the Hiker is £18. (Current Amazon uk prices) Good comparison though, apart from the fire lighting. Either saw blade, as several people mentioned, will do a better job than the awl or little blade. If you really want to see what a SAK can do check out Felix Immler’s channel or books. Liked and subbed 👍🏴
Nice video will pick up a farmer (already own a few Pioneers and this was the extra push for me to get a Farmer). Thanks and that fish looked delicious.

Tip for using the Hiker as a ferro rod striker - use the back of the saw blade. Works great, and saves the small blade.
For sure. The back of saw is the best on a sak. It hurt me watching the edge of the blade being used.
So refreshing to see a knife review and actually using it. Much better than showing a knife on a desk and talking about it for 20 minutes
You can use the Back of the Saw to Strike the Ferro Rod
I will give that a try! Thanks for watching.
That would save blunting the blade, for sure.

the advantage of the “hiker’s awl” is that you can apply it as a “T” handle awl which permits a better application of that tool

Yeah, same here, I also use back of the saw. Blade cuts into the rod if the angel is not right and takes lot more tried to light up.
Does the saw lock? I filed the back of the can opener on my Trekker, as it locks and use that for striking the Ferro rod.
for anyone who has the hiker model and doesn't know about the pin slot, it is under the screwdriver by the hinge.

Yes. Did a video on the topic. ua-cam.com/video/y-SWwwYxBFg/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
Great video! If I use a magnesium block, I don't scrape it, but rather kind of whittle the metal in shavings and they go up very nicely and hot, even if the tinder is damp. I think it burns at 1800 degrees or something very high and magnesium burns under water too.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Excellent video! What a beautiful fish.. Thank you for posting!
Thanks!
Awesome comparison. I have the farmer and the camper, and I find myself trying to decide which is better as well.
Can't go wrong with most any of them for a pocket knife. Good stuff. Thanks for watching.
Love the enthusiasm, and great video! 👍
Thanks for watching!

Good Job mate. Between, can opener and bottle openers fits right in to the Philip heads, so a farmer not having a dedicated Philips doesn't matter, hence it's better over hiker in my opinion. And, one can always strike fire at the back of the knives in their closed position. Have a good one.
The back of the saw works great as well. Thanks for watching! ua-cam.com/video/y-SWwwYxBFg/v-deo.html
This guy understands what’s up, a good SAK replaces at least 5 whole separate tools including a filet knife. Good on ya brother.
this man is a really good youtuber survivalist. really is realistic
Thanks brother~
I have the Camper, which is a Hiker minus the phillips screwdriver + a corkscrew. I added plus scales so it has an ink pen, straight pin, and eyeglasses screwdriver. It will be my go-to for camping.
I'm not a survivalist or anything but I have tried the back of the saw on my Voctorinox one-handed Trekker to strike a ferro rod and it works. So that could give the Hiker and edge up on the farmer, with the saw serving double duty and a secondary blade.
Maybe. Also the primary blade of the farmer is larger and thicker. Both great knives and thanks for watching!
Be safe out there.
the back of any sak saw works great for ferro rods.
If you use the back of the saw blade it will work great on your magnesium, you will get curls of magnesium if you use it on the edge of the block. the back of the saw blade make good strikers. Try that with both knife and you opinion my change. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Fun camping trip! Ty! Bro!!!
Hard to go wrong with most any SAK. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Hope you enjoyed making it as much as I enjoyed watching it. I'd prefer the farmer. The reamer, as all the blades, are easier to use out the end as opposed to the middle, IMHO.
The Farmer is nice for sure! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this, I have a Farmer but I never thought of using the reamer as a ferro rod striker, so you have added to my store of knowledge.
I used to carry my champ all the time but now I carry a tinker since it sits nicer in the pocket. Might go back to the Swiss champ if I get a holster for it.
Tinker is a nice SAK. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I think the cap opener / large screwdriver on the Farmer is also beefier and slightly bigger, or more confidently shaped too than the regular sak.
It’s normal. Hiker is 91 mm, Farmer alox is 93 mm. The large SAKs (111 mm) have an even bigger cap opener.
Your reviews are very very thorough and entertaining
Thanks for watching!
You just made me hungry! Great review! The back of the saw blade on either knife works great as a striker for a ferro rod. Put with a fixed blade and a forest axe you are set for camp task.
Yes the back of the blade is great. Check out this video and thanks for watching. ua-cam.com/video/y-SWwwYxBFg/v-deo.html
Get a little closer to the tinder when your doing this, the method you use is perfect for getting in close without messing up the tinder, but when your far with it the sparks just hit the ground.
Thanks for watching
This guy's video convinced me to carry my sak in addition to my full tang knife. I've nixed my multitool with pliers and have been super happy with my backpacking kit.
Thanks for watching. SAKS are good tools IMHO!
Nice video, it gets even better when one discovers the Farmer and the Rambler are a perfect match. 👌
Good video, These knives can often be overlooked I have the small classic and its used everyday. wouldn't be without one.
oh, and that trout looked good too. nice job.
Thanks for watching!
MegaWoodswalker and
Is there any purpose for a Phillips head screwdriver while hiking? I would think a farmer would use a Phillips more.
you can use the back of the saw as a ferro rod scraper
Yes here is a video on that. Thanks for watching! ua-cam.com/video/y-SWwwYxBFg/v-deo.html
This was incredibly entertaining !
You can use the awl on the hiker to scrape ferro rod, just hold it firmly.
For me personally ferro rod plus SAK it's always been the spine of the woodsaw as a striker, of course if you wish to stiffen the blade during the stroke careful thumb placement is required
Thanks for this. Sold me on the hiker 100%. Also made it look like fun there!
Thanks for watching.
Curious place internet, you randomly watch a good video comparing two knifes you're interested in, go to see the comments and find that the man is dead 😢, rest in peace man, you did a good job.
Same thing just happened to me!
Awesome video full of energy. I can tell you love being in the woods! Also you convinced me to get the Farmer. It looks excellent!
Thanks for watching!
I always use the spine of the saw for the firesteel and that works also great.
Awesome reamer on the alox models , great for clamshell/package opening & as seen ferro rod use :)
..........i use the farmer for work (UK) & short walks/bushcraft-close to home , great knife :)
Great vídeo mate. Im a collector of saks and bushcrafter. They are my knives always. I love the farmers for their heavier capabilities, but any will do, really..
Thanks for watching!
Hi, enjoyed your video immensely you clearly have a love for the outdoors. What make of large Ferro Rod do you use?
One of those 1/2 X 5 inch blanks for ebay or Amazon. I added the Kydex.www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-x-5-Ferrocerium-Rod-Flint-Fire-Starter-Magnesium-Tool-Kits-Camping-Large/291826211786?epid=1481520226&hash=item43f2329bca:g:4KYAAOSwbsBXk472:sc:USPSFirstClass!06468!US!-1:rk:2:pf:1&frcectupt=true
I have a couple of Hikers and was tempted by the Farmer, but can’t justify £30 for the Farmer when the Hiker is £18. (Current Amazon uk prices)
Good comparison though, apart from the fire lighting. Either saw blade, as several people mentioned, will do a better job than the awl or little blade.
If you really want to see what a SAK can do check out Felix Immler’s channel or books.
Liked and subbed 👍🏴
The Hiker is a great pocket knife. Thanks for the sub and watching!
Nice video will pick up a farmer (already own a few Pioneers and this was the extra push for me to get a Farmer). Thanks and that fish looked delicious.
It was good. Thanks for watching!
Check out the firefly mini firesteels, they can replace the toothpick and give you fire option on your SAK, bit pricey but...
