    Josh, excellent tutorial! I've had a Spartan, since the early 80s and just recently got interested in whittling. I used your video to do the modifications and it worked out perfectly. Great now for whittling, but you are right about the cork screw, so actually looking at getting a Recruit. I used my standard bench grinder and just took care. Anyway, the only suggestion is that your grinding wheel be dressed to ensure a nice flat grinding surface and a square edge.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I am bad about dressing my wheel's, but I almost always finish on diamond plates so things get flattened out there. I could probably save myself a bit of elbow grease if I was more proactive like you. Anyway, I'm glad you found the video useful.

      Sooo do you whittle down the little recruits? Or do you have them whittle for you? 😂

    i have a classic sd that i modified for whittling a few years ago. i love to whittle in a very small scale, the classic sd has become my favorite of all my whittling knives. i do have a beaver craft tool roll kit of my large knife with a detail knife, a hook knife, a bent gouge and an oldtimer 24OT+ a small sharpening kit that all fits in that tool roll and packs nicely in my backpack for travel.

      I have never tried whittling with a classic SD, but now I am intrigued. Did you modify the blade in anyway, or do you just keep it sharp and go to town?

      It does have a fine combination of tools. Mine sees a fair bit of use, although I don't have the plus scales on mine. I always have a pen or pencil in my pocket, so I haven't switched the scales. Also, mine has the Boy Scout scales, and I like those, if the emblem ever wears off, I will probably swap them out though.

    Victorinox Swiss Army, does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.

    Tnx for this vid! I've got a SAK (well 3 of them really) and was starting to get quite interested in small carving when in the woods, but found that my SAK just couldn't get into some of the smaal cuts I'd want to make. Came across this vid and am really keen to give this a try now! Sad part, I only have hand tools, BUT I do have a diamond file (mainly for stone carving really) that'll be able to take on the work of the benchgrinder quite nicely anyway!

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      Not sure how wide you diamond file is, but if it is rather narrow, it might be tough to get a nice flat edge on the knife. You could do it on a set of wet/sharpening stones or sandpaper on a flat surface as well, it will just take a little bit. If you don't have either of those options, you might want to consider one. You will likely need some way of sharpening and maintaining your blade(s).

    • @lalystar4230
      @lalystar4230 2 роки тому

      @@JoshsShop great tip! yeah I do have some sharpening stones, but they are actual stones, so I don't like to do such aggressive stuff on them.
      The file is quite narrow at about 15mm, but it'll be perfect to just take the bulk off. And I can always just turn the blade slightly to have it so that it'll make full contact with the file at all times.
      After that I'll definitely take it to my sharpening stones to profile and sharpen it.

      On another note, I sometimes see those whittling knives that are ever so slightly curved inward, I'm kinda wondering if it'd be worth it to put such an edge on it or not...
      Then again, I've never whittled with actual carving knives before haha, so I'd probably just stick with a proper straight edge :3

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      @@lalystar4230 I prefer a straight edge for most of my whittling. I'm not sure if I have seen anyone use a hawksbill kind of shape for whittling, but I have seen many that prefer a gently upswept blade. Best of luck with your modification.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  6 місяців тому

      Thanks. The blade geometry somewhat comes down to preference, although I believe no matter what shape you go with the edge benefits from a convex shape rather than a micro bevel.

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. The wood on the knife in this video is from an oak burl, and I think it really turned out well. It is done in the same way as the 58mm cherry scaled rambler in my other video, just different wood.

    You like to whittle with a SAK but ive heard you should be stropping your SAK's pathetically soft steel after a dozen or so cuts. Are you also carrying a strop around?

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому

      I am, I made a SAK Whittling Intro video ( ua-cam.com/video/PVD5jUcGdGg/v-deo.html ) where I show my kit, if you care to see that. I don't strop quite as frequently as every dozen cuts, but definitely more often than with some of my other knives. When it gets hard to cut, I strop. For these little projects, I generally get done roughing things out, then strop and do some finishing cuts.
      The steel is definitely on the softer side, but that makes it easier to maintain and it does take a fine edge.
