I can remember buying these army surplus stores for £7 each! Back in the early 90s. There were several makers, Victorinox, Adler ,ccm and many more all contracted to supply the German army! They are now fetching silly money if you have a nice one !
I picked up a few of these around 10 years ago. I remember the saw blade closing on my thumb while I was 15ft up a ladder trying to use the screwdriver 😂 it still gets the odd bit of use at work.
About a month ago I stupidly closed the saw on my Vic Ranger on the side of my big sausage index finger. Cleaned it with alcohol. Damn thing itched for 3 days. That saw is no joke. Boy does it SNAP. IMHO that saw should lock
I picked up one of these some ten years ago in a surplus store. I only paid ten quid and it was in very good condition. It is a favourite in my collection of Victorinox blades. Mine has a metal sleeve over the saw blade which makes the combination tool on the end much safer to use.
Thanks! I have owned one of these for ages and you have reminded and inspired me to give it a full service!! It's a great knife......it's right on the absolute legal limit for edc in the UK, so I don't risk it. But it stays on a long lanyard attached to my shooting kit, so fine in the woods! Simple and very useful design. I have used the saw very effectively on several occasions to prep twig fuel for my small wood stove that accompanies me on my trips. Likewise, if used very carefully, the blade will batten down very small sticks to feed the tiny stove while I brew up. You can see why it would have made a perfectly effective and versatile pocket knife for soldiers.
Well done, sir. Always love putting a little effort and TLC into some history that's not so rare you can still put it to good use and have a great conversation piece.
have 2, carried one for decades. pull one out to use in the G2 1 MEF Fwd, SA. Col saw it, asked to see it. opend the blade to check makers mark. smilled a little and pulled out his. real ones are hard to find. once you pop off the scales, they will never be tight again. but still good work. always carried this one, Leatherman Demo tool and Randall 14, my Sig 226 (lucky I never got caught. GOs order no POWs, but they had theirs) on my rigger belt. Go a lot of use. NEVER go cheap on life suport gear. borrow money if you must..
That is stunning quality. To be able to snap these old scales without any damage done is really impressive. Think the cap lifter also are intended to work as a can opener, thus the (missing) guard over the saw :) Brilliant find 👍
Just managed to get one of these to go into my collection with Mauser and later GAK. Mine didn’t have the saw guard also so picked up a cheap MFH copy of this knife which had a guard. Bit of a polish later … buffed up well.
The GAK I managed to find on Etsy … there is someone who sells original Victorinox and Wenger knives. I was in German last year and passed over a GAK that was cheap as chips for a later GAK … but wish I’d bought both at the time. They were cheap (< €20) and so I was stupid. 🤣 The MFH copy is okay … very much identical … but Victorinox is Victorinox … and is the daddy. The saw guard is near as dammit identical to the one on my Mauser so sacrificed the MFH.

@@jacqdarzi ….works for me when initially refurbishing and freeing up the movement of most things….then when cleaned, use the dedicated lube of choice, food grade mineral oil a lot of people would recommend for Victorinox … it’s up to you. I work offshore in the commercial diving industry, so it’s always available and free👍🤣. But Magnacut or LC200N steel from Spyderco is my working knife steel of choice at sea…kinda looks after itself🍻
Yep I’ve got me one of those victorinox made ones 👍❤️ As per usual I’ll pause video and run in and grab my same knife and return to video lol And the oil I prefer is hairdresser top quality scissor oil
Years ago- early 1980s, my parents bought me a Victorinox Safari from Brussels, I sold it and regretted it ever since, I was in Bombay and absolutely skint, but anyway, years later I discovered this and managed to get two of them, one an actual Victorinox and one, I can’t remember the make, possibly AMC or something similar, the first one, I had to reprofile the blade as it was damaged, happily, the Victorinox was mint.😁
Interested seeing this..I have a very similar knife but it has 3 layers (2 large blades plus a saw) and was marketed as a Mauser Officer's knife. I've had it since new in 1987/88. Guess what, I've lost the saw guard too!
"While we think of our poor life choices, becoming knife collectors..." LMAO!!! 🤣 Well done job on that old GAK, it's amazing how a little bit of TLC can make such a huge difference. 👍Thanks for sharing, take care my friend and Cheers!
I've got one of these and it's like new. I don't use it at all. I bought a new case for it and put it away. They are a good knife and it's not easy to find them in good condition.
Really like the108’s 👍 I would be interested in you doing a video on your sonic cleaner, I don’t know anything about them. When I get a new used SAK I usually soak it in warm soapy water and then go after it with a toothbrush. I have never seen anyone remove the nylon scales off a 108mm before, I don’t believe you can get replacement scales for them. If you get a GAK 2 it comes with a file/match strike on the saw, making it the most feature filled tool on a SAK. Did you notice the teeth on the saw are directional ?
I have two of these. One unfortunately is damaged. The knife blade is very difficult to open as it seats too far down in the knife when closed and it doesn't lock into position properly when open. There's play when it should be firmly locked. Is there a way to disassemble these completely so as to get to the "innards"?
I picked up a NATO version of that knife...also missing the shield....if you ever hear of a source to replace those shields, please let us know....nice job on the restoration...sounds like it is tuned up and ready to perform....Jim
Shock to see no can opener hope they didn't get hungry out in field because want be eating tonight they can get drunk as a lord but stomach are empty all in all very nice knife love the saw design like it better than mine
Johnwall8641 the end of the saw is a combination tool, can & bottle opener like on a Compact model. That’s why they originally came with the guard too keep from getting cut on the teeth.of the saw while opening a can.
That is a rare one, it's going to clean up nicely, I like to take mine to The shower and blast out the dirt with really hot 🔥 water, or I can use my Air compressor, nice resto she's a beautiful SAK opps sorry meant GAK my bad, nice for making me feel guilty for being a SAKAHOLIC 😂😂 appreciate it, its OK I'll get over it, awesome vid brother see you soon 🇺🇲🙏😎🔥

That's amazing brother! I've fallen in love with these
Cool piece and one I'd like to get hold of some day. Thanks for putting some love into it. Take care, Matt.
You may not need to look much further, I've been hunting for you, unfortunately not in the current parcel but will be in the next one ❤️
My main carry .I have carried one for about 30 years.amazing .I actually feel lost without it in my pocket..bring them back new please .
Yea but make the saw full length and put a good carbon blade in it
That's amazing 🤩

I could be wrong, but I remember having a knife like this but instead of the army crest it had the Mauser banner on the front scale.
They do make that
Really enjoyed this video Slippy!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you LANDO!
Great job! You're only missing the saw cover, but it nearly always gets lost.

Useful tool. I've got an I.C.A.R version - made in Italy I believe. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Nice! I have the Safari Trooper with OD green scales. Identical to this army version minus the BW logo.
Awesome, I recently picked one up
