  • Denzel Washington stars as an idealistic civil rights lawyer in "Roman J. Israel, Esq."
At a red carpet screening for the film last night in NYC, Washington told theGrio's Natasha Alford whether he thinks change in the criminal justice system for black people is really possible and what a group of Columbia students taught him about hope.

Denzel grew up with friends who ended up spending years in prison. I think he knows something about it. His mom moved and put him in a private school-which was a tremendous sacrifice-to get him away from the streets.

Coming from a two parent home in any ethnic group helps children. I grew up with both of my parents. We took family trips, went to church together, cooked together and ate together at the table. No exceptions. When I was going through some troubles, they had the option to send me away to some troubled teens camps. They said no. They handled my issues at home and stood united as one. There is something to be said when every black friend I’ve had has never had a father or their parents being married. A family unit with a mother and a father is a powerful thing.

danielle d. absolutely, you are 100% correct! My parents didn’t have a perfect marriage but they taught me & my siblings morals, how to be a hard worker. My dad taught me how to carry myself around boys, ex: never call a boy, let him call you ect If s boy is interested in you he will chase you not the other way around. I learned great lessons from both my parents. Kids need both parents, some women give away the milk too soon in a relationship and the men don’t value them. Women need to set the standards so they will be with a committed mate, and have a family. It all starts in the household, people don’t want to be accountable.

He didn't say anything wrong. Character is built at home. For some of us if you're not getting structure or love or attention or a you don't have a strong male showing you how to be upright and a good person then we get our education from the streets. And when that happens it usually isn't a good thing. Not saying that everyone who is raised by the streets are criminals but that is the perception by some

Blaming the system and Obama for bailing out the bankers and selling out did not resolve my issues. I had to learn to stop being a victim of the establishment that is not just white face, but black face sellouts like Obama and the political agenda of keeping people oppressed and still enslaved. Everything starts at home like victimhood and all negative isms as well. A functional family unit is awesome, but if Dad is a pedophile and Mom is an enabler, then what? If they did please explain how this is the case. All of my black friends are professional individuals earning good money in good careers. Learn the game, learn it quickly, learnt what will advance your personal position and focus on getting that done. Once its done then you mentor and bring up the next generation or anyone willing to do the work to advance. Most over races don't seem to have a huge issue improving their quality of life so what arent we getting as a community.

As someone closer to Denzel's age, I can share one key lesson in life that I've learned … Successful people focus their time and energy on the things they can control, and invest little time in things they can't. As a Black man, I can't control whether people like my ethnicity. However, I can control whether I give my 3 children the love, teaching, time and attention they need. Denzel is 100% correct. The home is far more powerful than you can imagine. It all starts there.

in African culture, family is paramount. brothers in the USA are the same, they will defend their mother until the end. My Senegalese father always says you mother first and your mother last. The environment in the USA was deliberately focused on destroying the black family, which is what Denzel failed to address. I am all for tough love and yes some of my brothers fails their duties but lets not act like this is happening our of thin air. This country has had racist policies against the black families for a long time. we all need to counsel our boys to be good father but cannot be blind to all the war these streets have brought to my African American brothers and sisters. Bill Clinton for example with his Welfares to Work program creating policy incentives for low income mothers to separate from their man.

(It just seems like it's one one those things that's acceptable and never questioned)I see far too many Blacks who migrate from the South, stumbling around with open containers, and the urban landscape is cluttered with beer cans and liquor bottles. Daily inebriation in the hood needs to be addressed.

It's not racism, it's the family unit, end of story. We need not just black fathers, but all fathers to remain in the home. Men leave because of their wives, but they love their kids. If we didn't have sex before marriage, people wouldn't be blind as to who they are marrying. The men get addicted to the sex from the woman and don't want to let it go, when instead we should abstain from pre-marital sex in order to see whether or not our SO is for us. Single mothers do the best they can, but they raise the worst kids, look at the stats. A family requires a father and a mother.

The better question is how many were thrown a bone but either failed to recognize the opportunity being given in that moment or just outright wasted opportunities.
Most opportunities come in small forms or in ways that don't seem "worth it" at the time they present themselves.

Basic religious values have been under attack and marginalized the last 75 years. These values taught, to raise healthy well adjusted decent human beings, you need both a Father and a Mother there In the Home - and evidence is all around, that proves this works. Yet these values have been increasingly attacked and pushed out - and the result is - at a minimum, nervous unstable and addicted to something- young people who need psychiatrists. And at a maximum you get young people engaging in crime, gangs, drugs. Classic wisdom for health: You need a Father and Mother in the home raising kids - there is no way around this.

L Crom , what kills me is the white talking point "having a father in the home" as if that will change the outcome of the racist criminal justice system, while it continues to drive the getaway car of responsibility and tell the victim to be accountable while given him unjust treatment before incarcerating him.

What I've find amazing is it's easy to over-criminalize and bastardize a population of people. As long, as white society dehumanizes Black people by using Black celebrities to finish the job by taking our humanity and dignity away from us. As a result, no one feel any remorse or feel compassion for Black people because our humanity was taking away this is why people can talk down to us such as, form levels of negative labels like "Black on Black crime" making it look like we are a bad people.

I put a lot of this on the media. They stoke racial divide in this country. They give a megaphone to those screaming racism and shut out those talking about family and responsibility. We hear about the problems of "institutional racism" everyday. But no one wants to talk about the effects of absent fathers.

When U hav a prison system that is Privately owned and has to hav a certain amount of inmates to make money , the judicial system will find a way to lock our kids up. The problem is not the prison system...the problem is OUR ACTIONS. We are making victims out of EACH OTHER. I live in Detroit...black city, black schoools, black businesses, black police force, black everything..but its changing. We are/have destroyed our city. It is now being bought out at wholesale prices to people that don't care about us. Now, white people are moving back in the downtown area...who was instrumental in the gentrification of our downtown...US. The mystical white fella is not here in Detroit causing our brothers to do the terrible things they are doing. We are doing it to ourselves.
