I've never watched an interview with Denzel where he allows someone to get to the end of a sentence. That isn't debate, that's projection of one's own opinion while refusing the freedom of speech to others.
@Zac Atkinson You are wrong. It is almost completely culture. Genetic component is insignificant. YOu people who want to to make "RACE" into a thing are really the cause of much of the suffering in the world.
Mrimchaelson That depends. E.g. if the white guy grew up in Beverly Hills and the black guy grew up on 8 mile Detroit, there would be a big cultural difference.
A reporter once asked Denzel whom he had voted for and he said it was none of anyone's business. At that moment I realized he is very different from rest of the Hollywood.

Well there is only one acceptable answer in Hollywood these days if you want to keep your job.
DW is sharp as a razor and doesn't play games. He's not trying to con anybody. There is very little authenticity left, especially among famous people. Everywhere you look, it's scripted BS, to con us into dividing ourselves against eachother. It takes a lot of strength of character to stand against that machine. DW certainly has that strength.
I hate the black vs white Jesus argument. He is Jesus of Nazareth. If you want show him correctly then look at the people there and that will give you a clue. He wasn’t white Caucasian or Black African the most respectful way to show him would be Arab.
Plus there can be cultural differences within a racial group which he doesnt seem to know when he says that a white director can direct another white director's film. He's probably doing it on purpose, maybe to give the interviewer something to work with but still.......
What makes you so sure he is a good individual? I'm highly certain that Denzel himself would object to your assertion & end up saying, don't be so quick to guarantee the degree of something with your eyes nevertheless on the internet if you don't know what their concealed life is like behind the camera.
@@laundry1913 I usually accurate when it comes to someone's character and intentions. I used to build profiles on people when I worked in intelligence. I'd like to think that I was pretty decent at it.
I’m really starting to respect Denzel, this guy knows what it takes to get far in life. It’s not color but culture. It’s not society but individuality that makes a person.
I mean, society heavily impacts how far you get in life. Like how a person born poor is much less likely to be successful and how someone from a 3rd world country will have less opportunity than someone in a developed country. Also, Denzel was directly referring to movie making, not any other aspect of society.
tie gideon I believe parents are the foundation for their children’s success. In America you have a great opportunity to succeed no matter the circumstances. Your upbringing help jump start your life, it’s up to you to continue rise through the challenges.

If you think about it, most of the inequality is about class not colour. There are privileged people of all groups and there are also poor. It seems like there are people that profit by carrying on the racial division so we never get to the actual solutions.
@@tiegideon9816 I'd like to disagree with you, without offending you. When you say that someone who is born poor is 'less likely' to be successful, I disagree with the premise. First of all, your success is NOT A MATTER OF PROBABILITY. You choose. I can't choose for you. Choices lead to success or failure. And attitude. When you don't succeed on the first try, do you quit? Or do you CHOOSE to make your own success happen, regardless of the circumstances? Have you ever hit overtime at two jobs in the same week? I have. I CHOSE TO. Have you ever worked 80 hours a week, for 4 years straight? With only Christmas and Thanksgiving Day off? I have. I CHOSE TO. You need to start by defining what success is to you, personally. Then work backwards and make a plan on how to get there. Step by step. And when your plan starts to fail, you need to find another way. And when that fails, you come up with another way. And when you don't have enough money to do it, get a second job. You choose to make yourself successful. True success doesn't come from being born into some rich family that gives you a fake career, with no effort. You need to throw that lie out the window RIGHT NOW. Secondly, there's nothing so special about making movies that invalidates DW's point about culture versus color in a broader application. The lady asked him why the director needed to have dark skin. His point is that the skin tone itself had no effect, but that the culture was important to the outcome. I think this applies to many other areas. If you surround yourself with a culture that brainwashes you into thinking that you cannot achieve success because you were born poor, you won't achieve success. Your skin color won't have any effect on the outcome. Reform your own personal culture, and CHOOSE to make success happen. Write down your plan on paper, because it's so easy to get distracted.
MegaGolgo13 To whites and coonservatives if you point out racist law makers and biased policies didn’t end the day the civil rights act was signed they will call it complaining. Now you have whites complaining about drug laws designed for us, trade deals that hit us AFTER 400 years of being held back and other disparities we already faced. It’s not complaining or “victimhood” when they do it.
This is exactly why some people show a difference and some people push their difference, Denzel is showing a difference and explaining it without any aggression or side agenda - well done sir

You guys can mock her...but I thought Denzels answer was insightful. Maybe that's a way black people can MAYBE get through to some white people who...question or are suspect of their claims of not even police brutality, but just harassment. How about you examine the context of that statistic, why husbands are not in the home and the governmental push to get them out. If you can understand that historical context, you'd think twice about your simplistic insertion of percentages, and how ridiculously gullible you and the rest of Middle America is for failing to look further than one blind study that was probably skewed to corroborate a specific theory.
@@dpcisunbreakable I understand very well how 'progressive' policies have disincentivized the black family. My point - which seems to have flown right past you - is that if people are going to keep buying into it generation after generation with the results we've seen, it must be an IQ issue. 'If you can understand that historical context . . . ' And what is that historical context? Drawn me some sort of correlation between what you think that historical context is, and how it directly effects the decisions that people make right now. Describe to me the agency or lack thereof of the people who might or might not be affected by that historical context. Meanwhile, a further contention I'll make is that the white left PURPOSELY disincentivized the black family. Chew on that.
@@zeenuf00 First and foremost, let me remind you that we are both adults here, this is just a dialogue, and I assume you have home training. If you can't do without the bitchy retorts and teenage sarcasm, you should consider talking to yourself instead of folks on UA-cam. Now to address your deliberately miseducated thought about generational struggle. You are not a trained psychologist that performs assessments on patients with a focus on their Intellectual Quotient, so stay out of the lane of those with PhDs in that field. They can determine that testing outcome for themselves. Consider working within the talents you do have without jumping to conclusions you're not qualified to reach. Take a pause from this discussion for a moment and go back to your own childhood for a minute. I want you to consider all of what you saw, what you had, and where the dysfunction, if any, occurred. It is safe to say that you grew up in a household with two married parents. That was the foundation of your development, and you had no interruptions to your functioning that was detrimental. As you developed into a reasonably mature adult, you probably modeled your existence based off of the example established by your parents. An IQ score or issue is not relevant here when clearly one's offspring model their behaviors, values, beliefs, and choices after what they see you do. If you have been successful in your relationship dynamics, the children you do have most likely will model their family dynamics after the example you showed them. I'm hoping after reading this comment, you start becoming a better example of humility. None of that required your reductive and catty IQ reply. Now factor in the limited educational and employment opportunities. Schools and employers were were legally allowed to segregate their programs and resources so that only whites were afforded opportunities for growth, and limited blacks to blue color positions for men, and maid positions for white families for black women. It is at this crucial point in history that mothers were encouraged to utilize governmental benefits to enhance the functioning of their families far beyond the limited income they were paid. So food stamps and monthly payouts were the cost the government paid to rid black families of their male parent. This also the period just before the 1970s, where many history exploded with triumphs and tragedies. The one specific tragedy that your federal government covertly inserted were drugs. Now you can always insert the presumed adage that a person can say no to drugs, but when your entire community in infiltrated with crack cocaine, heroin, liquor stores on every corner where churches are built opposite of the same block. The same family structure is now struggling to keep its male protected as the temptations of drugs, greed, addiction, etc. have now contributed to a growing issue of crime. The family structure begins further declines because the parent is often swapping roles with their offspring at inappropriate stages because of the parent's relationship with drugs that were sponsored into the United States by our very own Federal Government. And with crime increasing, incarcerations increase, marriages fall apart (if the parents are lucky enough to marry), and the incarcerated family members now have never-ending cycles of relapse, recidivism, and no opportunities to rebuild their lives, because their criminal record has tainted them forever. That means formerly incarcerated fathers can't support their children, can't find jobs, and are subject to further decline as their limitations increase. And when people that are unqualified to speak on the Black Experience by inflating negatively skewed percentages without substance, you feed into racist ideas by making improper generalizations. If you were truly about that life and wanted to gain understanding, I wouldn't have needed to expend this much time educating you on a history you clearly choose not to learn. Now take your reductive comments regarding chewing and IQ and apply them to the many inadequacies your arrogance works to downplay each day by being a total douchebag with a sensitive ego and an unwillingness to move away from archaic and rigid thinking.
@Mr Daddy Please Spank Me And Your statement is an oxymoron. Supposedly they aren't apart of any culture, but you also believe they still fall into a certain group. Lol, culture just means that their is an aspect that they as people all share. It doesn't have to be tied to any one particular thing. Nationality or heritage isn't any more of a relevant comparison than color or religion. As long as a large number of them feel apart of that group, then that group develops its own culture.
I loved that debate. I loved that after he said that, all the people on stage laughed and mocked him, so he proceeded to rattle off fact after fact after fact.
They are both talking about different things, though. Ben was basically blaming systemic black issues on black culture, as if its their fault they're having a hard time, and not the fact that they've been enslaved for the majority of this countries existence. Denzel is saying a director who has been a part of black culture will make a black film better. Completely different points with different intentions.
@@hchchc948 However systemic black issues can very well be blamed on black culture, Shapiro is not entirely wrong and part of the problem is the fact that we don't recognize that and completely dismiss it as racist ranting.. Now as for Denzel, he did not mean that black films are better because of black culture, he simply meant that a black director in charge would be able to incorporate things in the film that are relevant and black folks would relate to it, which is why he give the examples of the films like good fellas and schindler's list, and the hot comb example..someone not familiar with those cultures would not be able to incorporate and convey things the same way, or understand the references.
Denzel nails the difference between race and culture better than I've heard anyone of his stature ever. He just became my favorite celebrity ever. A guiding light in our troubled times.
LOL. So true. It is shocking to me that Biden can retain a large group of black voters after saying something like he did. What he said is one of the more racist things I have heard. He was basically saying that black people all think alike. He doesn't see black people as individuals, he sees them as just a group that he can exploit.
Totally agree. As a country with so diverse culture, everybody needs to learn how to deal with diversity. And as an immigrant I also need to absorb the american culture and respect other cultures as well.

So valuable for growing and communication and value and respect. She was really taken aback when Denzel said "It's not color, it's culture" and she tapped into what he meant by it. So beautiful to see discussion rather than arguing or debating ie: growth vs being right. So beautiful
Why can’t we just have honest discussions about race and culture...? We do have our differences and those differences are beautiful, funny and endearing.
We can. Stand tall, and say what you believe. Don't let The Machine control you. We are breaking the machine, RIGHT NOW. Nothing can stop what's coming.
tln25 you are so right about that, there is a lot to learn from and enjoy about each other and if you look at the way most people interact in the world, I would say we all know that and live by it. We’ve all brought parts of other’s cultures into our own lives and homes. And the parts we don’t care for, we don’t take part in and that’s fine. But it seems that whenever an incident happens, then suddenly division and hate sets in and meaningful conversation gets lost. We have to work hard to continue to respect each other and live in unity and peace.
From all I’ve seen of Denzel in these situation. He always stops this bullshit race baiting/ leading question right on the spot on corrects the reporter/interviewer.
The media moguls pay her good money to stoke racism, because the people who control the media moguls pay the moguls good money. It's a top down, Marxist con to show division, so that if real problems kick off we will all fight ourselves instead of the rich dickheads. That's my observation at least. I grew up in the 90s with all kinds of friends. We didn't go on about race and shit. We were equals. What happened?
@@shineyshine2008 exactly. I was growing up in the 90's as well. I was an Ojibwe Native growing up in a white neighborhood. Nobody cared. We all still played together. There WERE black people living their too, not many, but they were there. Some dumb kid called one of the black kids the N word. And all the white parents got together, along with my parents, and dealt with it, with the parent of the black kid. The kid that used the word, got DEALT with, by his parents. Trust me when I say DEALT with. Those were better times... and that's really sad... when you have to think back to 30 years ago, and think... we're more racist now than we were then?
Sometimes I wonder if I'm really a racist? I listen to people like Whoopi Goldberg, Barack and Michelle Obama and Oprah and I feel like I don't like these people. I hate their attitude and I resent their rhetoric. But then I see men like Denzel Washington and suddenly I feel nothing but love and total respect and admiration. That's when I realize that I am NOT a racist and my different feelings about different people has nothing to do with their skin color whatsoever!
TruthBeTold or it could be you like their perspective because it falls in line with yours. That what you described is not the test, can you listen to someone who looks different than you and disagree with them but respect that it’s their opinion based on their experience. If you find yourself discounting their experience because you yourself haven’t seen or encountered that then you need to check yourself.
You mean like the liberals and cultural Marxists who would call black people who do not play the racecard and speak the truth Uncle Tom? Yeah I see your point.
Everyone is racist to some degree but what you're saying is you like people who agree with you and dislike people who disagree with you. You mention disliking Michelle Obama, well that's a dead giveaway that you've got issues, because she's never anything but classy, no matter how much Fox News tried to make her fit the angry black woman stereotype. Take 3 words she said and run with that for 8 years, using it to create a caricature of her as someone who hates the country and wants to destroy our values. But any objective observer could say that she's nothing but likable. So if you "hate her attitude" as you say, then yes, you have a problem, but it's a problem of not being able to like people and disagree with them at the same time.
What a wonderful way to explain. Denzel is such a nice normal down to earth man of true character. He shows that you can be in Hollywood industry and remain true to who you are.
Sometimes it's hard for me to remember if a character was played by a black or white person, but I keep being reminded. I think it was Morgan Freeman who said if we keep talking about colour , it won't go away.
Denzel feeds my soul honestly. I mean, separate from his amazing acting ability, most every time he opens his mouth he manages to say something that I have been thinking about for ages but never quite knew how to put it into words and explain myself. What a MAN. Thank you Denzel.
BLM should take note of this. Personal responsibility is a helluva thing. Don't burn down buildings, destroy businesses, and resist arrest. Crazy concept, right?
Add to that: Take care of your family, instead of shirking that responsibility. Personal responsibility and personal integrity -- if everyone practiced those, the entire world would have far fewer and smaller problems.

As a white male minister.. we have been saying this for many many many years.. Jesus was Jewish if middle easter descent He was most likely a mocha color... The church used a white Jesus in Europe not as a race issue but a political power issue of the kings. Remember there was a time of kings abs queens. And the Catholic Church served them for the sake of themselves having power. So much of those old paintings were for the sake of such things. But the Bible is clear: we are not to make any images for they all will fall short. Jesus was also not a model. In fact there was nothing appealing about him. Which is why politicians of the day crucified Jesus so successfully. Yes it is politicians who are also causing division today and caused the division of yesterday
You may understand the reasons why Jesus was made into a white man but you're overlooking the fact that he was made into a white man. You're overlooking the fact that symbols matter. Overlooking the fact that representation matters. The entire point about them making Jesus white with to make white people feel like they were privileged, closer to God, and special. That was a way that they did that through religion. They can also create a privileged status for white with policy decisions. How does that make you feel when you wake up and you look at your lord and savior and he looks like you? You're saying that Rafe doesn't matter and it shouldn't but it does. And when you say that race doesn't matter you're invalidating the life experiences of people who live in this world who deal with the color of their skin every single freaking day
WOW!!! Perdón, por no escribir en inglés, no sé, pero entendi todo lo que escribiste. Yo, lei, hace mucho en una biblia vieja, que Jesús era de apariencia fea, no guapo. ineedhoez My friend historical truth is not overlooking issues of race. It is explaining. You are judging others based on limited responses. We could talk for many hours on injustice abs the experience of those who have felt less than. But let me ask you this. Do you believe in God? Do you believe that He is in control? If yes then you must also be thankful for history.. Be careful as you are making yourself a victim... victims often create more victims. Do you not understand that the USA is a European nation, with a European descent and culture? It sounds like you want to erase one peoples culture and history and replace it with yours. Very sad my friend. Living in and amongst another’s peoples culture does not make one a victim but is very challenging indeed. I have traveled the world and this is a challange every where you go. The world is a dark place my friend yet the most fare and safest place I have ever been to is the USA. Note: the United States off America did not invent slavery or racism. Most African slaves actually were brought to Argentina!!! And South America. Fact!!! Slavery and racism historically was found most prevalent in Africa. Whites by the millions were enslaved and sold by Africans and middle eastern nations. Look it up! Africa today. Which I visit frequently! Has slavery today! And great tribalism. I was shocked to see almost every household has servants in some areas. Black households have black servants!! The United States was not formed until much much later. And never truly excepted slavery! But in fact abolished it as time and resources permitted. We are also the only nation that fought a civil war on the issue. USA is filled with white people who love and understand minorities much better than in other nations. Are there issues? yes!!!! The world will never be perfect! I am a minority in my own neighborhood! And have a multi cultural marriage!!! Stop playing the victim your life is much more valuable than that!
@@ineedhoez Don't you think you are reading a little too much politics into 1000 years old painting. Actually way older than that. Oldest jesus painting was done about 240 AC. He was represented looking like a greek philosopher. Most of the painters probably just painted the way they thought it looked like, which according to the bible was like them. Most of those painters have probably never met someone from the middle east in their lifetime. Even the landscapes from most of old italian paintings look more like tuscany than jerusalem because they had no clue how jerusalem looked like. Now this is not a comment on my part on the problem of racism. I am just trying to show that not everything is to be seen with an agenda to create white privilege. After all, tThe romans, who really spread out christianity didn't seem to care that much about race. They enslaved anyone they conquered, no matter the color of their skin.
I've been thinking about this a lot recently and I came to the same conclusion. It has nothing to do with the colour of someone's skin but whether their culture fits in with your own. And I think that's true of the whole of mankind. I really do. Denzil is a wise man indeed.

In Sweden we are not allowed to say we have A culture, is considered racist... the children are also not allowed to sing the National Anthem, is considered excluding, still we who come from Scandinavia all know what the first snowfall in November feel like, while non of the illegal immigrants neither have any interest in learning nor can ever understand it, they did not grow up in our “culture-shared” perspective of how the first snow make us feel closer to Christmas, Family and Kindness. Instead they throw stones at our Christmas shopping windows and spit in the snow, stating how much they hate the weather here, they just don’t see it. But, the culture is all around us, it comes in four seasons, and incorporates everyone, it defines who we are, just like “a hot comb”; and it is Beautiful! .... may Sweden rest in peace.
In my experience, Swedes are a kind, tolerant and reasonable people. I hear that Sweden as a country is clean, modern, scientific leaning and peaceful. I am sorry about what has happened to your culture. You have every right to exist as does the next culture. Good job in the world cup!
Who do you consider the ‘illegal immigrants’ in your country? Because, if I were an illegal immigrant in Sweden, I would easily be able to identity with the things you just said: the first snow making me feel closer to Christmas, family and kindness. I grew up in the U.S. and I now live in the U.K.
Bravo Denzel. Huge difference between both terms. My son is Cuban by birth, American by culture assimilation and white skinned as they come, yet raised with hispanic cultural components. If my family adopted a boy/girl in Africa or Asia, their skin will be very different but they will grow up embracing a mix of American/Hispanic cultures, in this example I make. Combinations are unlimited and black/white/yellow doesn't determine your culture 100%
A great example of what he might mean or referring to might be like getting Michael Bay to go direct Goodfellas or something of the sort. Michael Bay doesn't know too much of that culture to put in that way Scorsese did it. You know cultural difference.
Or to really back what he is saying get someone who's black that never been brought with the hot comb or the like and have them direct it, they would not understand that way of living. Therefore their perspective wouldn't add to the person Denzel is referring to. Or simpler terms black person growing up middle class suburbia vs black person growing up in urban environment.

Mr Denzel Washington is such a box full of wisdom. I could spend a entire day listening to him and wouldn’t get tired of it
In fact, race has no relevancy. White people have been at war with each other since forever. The 1st and 2nd World War were all " white on white " wars. But CULTURE, meaning IDENTITY, separate them from one and other; and eventually created tensions (wars). Same thing for the Tutsi and Hutu tribes in Africa. These two tribes are both " black " but they have been at war with each other for centuries because of major CULTURAL differences and rivalry. Same thing for China. Chinese kingdoms were at war with each other for centuries until the Qin dynasty finally made China an empire. So race shouldn't define people. In fact, races are corporate designations created by capitalistic elites to create division, in order to rule over the masses. The race debate - the race war - is a trap. Don't fall for it.
As far as I can see, you're an American no different than my grandfather, my mother, my daughter. We should be united against the narrative intending on making us into their useful idiots. What we are looking at are dark times. The initiatives that BLM is asking for right now are actually Jim Crow era laws. Racists would do anything they could to destabilize black neighborhoods. One of their tactics was to defund their law enforcement departments. Read over the list of demands and it will read like a segregationist, Jim Crow wish list. It's absolutely awful. Secondly, look at what this narrative does. Turning white people in a scapegoat for things they don't even agree with. Nobody is arguing against the idea that George Floyd died under unjust terms. He did. Nobody is arguing that the cops were in the right. They were not. This mentality in turn makes white people feel alienated and resentful. It creates racial tensions. Bad news for all of us. For the umpteenth time we are watching black commercial districts be looted and burned to the ground. Business owners are vowing not to return or cannot return, insurance companies are pulling out which will force big box stores to shutter... and we will watch black neighborhoods lose their job opportunities, access to goods and services, and be further swallowed into poverty and crime. And on top of that they want law enforcement to be defunded or disbanded?! Look at where all of these incidents occur. Democratic stronghold cities with control for 40+ years. The black community is being manipulated and crushed under the democratic model while blaming a group of people that have nothing to do with either. The plantation is real. When the black community starts feeling the affects of the aforementioned, the democrats will continue their hook-line-and-sinker chant blaming white people for all of their problems. This is their final push for ultimate power. They want total control over the United States. They are accomplishing this by running destabilization narratives that are very effective thanks to the leftist tools of main stream media and social media. We must stand together or fall.
Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman is clearly individuals that have individual thoughts and are not afraid of being individuals.

I’m really starting to respect Denzel, this guy knows what it takes to get far in life. It’s not color but culture. It’s not society but individuality that makes a person.
Very relatable today
@@tiegideon9816
I'd like to disagree with you, without offending you.
He doesn't cloak himself in the victim mentality that so many do.
That understandable, he is easily recognizable, he doesn't know what the ordinary black person goes through

And what is that historical context? Drawn me some sort of correlation between what you think that historical context is, and how it directly effects the decisions that people make right now. Describe to me the agency or lack thereof of the people who might or might not be affected by that historical context.
Meanwhile, a further contention I'll make is that the white left PURPOSELY disincentivized the black family. Chew on that.

@@hchchc948 However systemic black issues can very well be blamed on black culture, Shapiro is not entirely wrong and part of the problem is the fact that we don't recognize that and completely dismiss it as racist ranting.. Now as for Denzel, he did not mean that black films are better because of black culture, he simply meant that a black director in charge would be able to incorporate things in the film that are relevant and black folks would relate to it, which is why he give the examples of the films like good fellas and schindler's list, and the hot comb example..someone not familiar with those cultures would not be able to incorporate and convey things the same way, or understand the references.

that was a great discussion on the difference between perception. I also loved how the host when something was said and she realized she was out of her league of knowledge she stopped and listened to the one with more experience.
We do have our differences and those differences are beautiful, funny and endearing.

tln25 you are so right about that, there is a lot to learn from and enjoy about each other and if you look at the way most people interact in the world, I would say we all know that and live by it.

Yeah I see your point.
truthbe that's because you are a reasonable man and not a racist one. respect. i love what denzel said here
TruthBeTold Nah you're not racist, I'm the exact same and I'm even black LOL.

Amen!
And when you say that race doesn't matter you're invalidating the life experiences of people who live in this world who deal with the color of their skin every single freaking day

ineedhoez My friend historical truth is not overlooking issues of race.

Instead they throw stones at our Christmas shopping windows and spit in the snow, stating how much they hate the weather here, they just don’t see it. Denzel , you are an inspiration and an American treasure
TOTALLY!
@@TheNajSD brilliantly put!

TheNajSD this is so insightful and really helps me understand what’s going on.
I love denzel dismantling racists looking for ways to be bigots with their racist questions and completely removes color with logic.
