X is fantastic! The biggest difference to TCM and other 70s/80s slashers was, in my opinion, that the characters were interesting and likable. The dialogue was excellent. And the alligator scene alone was so intense. Don’t let Chris keep you from watching it, guys, it’s an excellent movie. I had so much fun at the theater.

Pete and Chris have any of you also seen The Last Duel?
It also was a relatively unknown film that you'll enjoy. A must see.
I really enjoyed The Northman too.
Reminded me of an 80's fantasy without the quirkiness and with the Robert Eggers feel to it. Great movie.

Hey Pete! Just a heads up, didn't know if you knew or not but there's a new David Cronenberg movie coming out next month called Crimes of the Future.. it's a return to his wheelhouse: Body Horror. It looks amazing from what I've seen of the trailer.

Have watched a lot of films over the last month or so...
    -Suicide Club
-Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer (this, like the original film is nuts).
-Rope (loved this film and it's easily one of my favourite Hitchcock flicks)
-Taxi Driver (first time seeing it, and wow... what took me so long to watch this haha)
-Old (a surprisingly good M. Night Shyamalan film)
-The Skin I Live In (the twist, though one that's been done before completely shocked me)
    -The Thing From Another World
-Hell Comes to Frog Town (a fun flick with Roddy Piper as the lead)
-Anthropophagus (an Italian cannibal film with two scenes that are absolutely nuts)

    • @LarryFleetwood8675
      @LarryFleetwood8675 2 роки тому +1

I love Rope, some will hate it for its one-take stage play style but the acting and its story's so good you really shouldn't care. Anthropophagus is creepy as all hell, in that old mansion on the isolated Greek island. I like director D'Amato's Beyond the Darkness (1979) with the ever-lovely Cinzia Monreale more, that one is even more disturbing.

I pointed out this really excellent ( for the time) and I had bought it at a video store going outta business back in the late 90’s. It’s an amazing Italian horror story called “Burial Ground” Okay? I’m certain it’s either ‘79-81. possibly before the Dawn Of The Dead 💀 trilogy to come!

Just watched The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism, and found it rather enjoyable. I liked the actors/characters, the setting/visuals were great and the one and only Christopher Lee stole the show whenever he was in it, of course. Some funny scenes as well, especially the way the main character escaped a certain device had me laughing. Oh, and Karin Dor is stunning. Good stuff. Thanks for the recommendation, Pete.

With The Northman, Eggers continues to build an impressive portfolio. Drenched deep in violence of Norse mythology, he abstains from the existentialism that burdened Rufus's Valhalla Rising and firmly sets sail for unbridled and bloody action. Impressive performances from all the ensemble cast and Alexander Skarsgård dominates the screen like a behemoth berserker, matching Schwarzenegger's sheer physicality in Conan the Barbarian. The Northman is not going the be the most original film of the year but it's bludgeonly authentic and its harsh conviction is such, that it is nevertheless worthy of the battle-stained halls of Valhalla. A glorious death achieved.
I agree with Chris (Happy Birthday!) about X. It's executed well but I found it underwhelming and uninspired.
Dr. Strange was a mixed bag for me. It was great to see the Scarlet Witch break out and there were many genuine turns, but Raimi delivered too much of a greatest hits package of his previous work. I wanted to see more use of sounds and extreme camera angles, which is what he excels in. It was clearly a Raimi film, but it did feel as if he was in cruise mode, which are perhaps due to the constraints such a massive franchise imposes.
Cinematically, it was interesting to see a different type of Batman. The film is tonally very Fincheresque, both in terms of colour pallet and environment. Despite the constant rain, Gotham is permanently buried in layers of filth. We do get to see a rawer and more viscous Dark Knight and as mentioned, the scenes as the world's greatest detective work well. I can appreciate why Jeffrey Wright's Gordon has been driven to despair, stained by the institutions he works within, to seek help of a vigilante and Zoe Kravitz has charm in abundance as the cat that can entice the bat. From the initial shriek, Dano's Riddler is unsettling and a worthy unhinged adversary. For a character that is ultimately unremarkable, he portrays it remarkably well. There are flaws. The finale is a clipped on attempt to deliver an unrequired popcorn finish and the peripheral stories aren't the most original. Serkis's Alfred on first reflection is underused but perhaps that detachment is why the bat remains so broken. This Batman has plently of promise and fingers crossed, there will be more to come.

Love these! As someone who isn't necessarily a fan of horror movies this is my favourite of the monsters den show as it usually isn't only covering horror. (I do watch the horror movies shows/rankings too, even though they aren't my cup of tea I love hearing Chris, Greg, Chris and Ofc Pete opinion). Next time hopefully you can do a 4 man show including Greg I think he is a great addition to the show! Happy Birthday Chris too, my birthday was 10th of May :)

Haven't watched much in the horror/sci-fi genres since Halloween. Did watch Night Creatures (aka: Captain Clegg) which was more of adventure film that horror and the old made-for-tv movie, Horror at 37,000 Feet with Chuck Connors, William Shatner & Buddy Ebsen. Needless to say it was nowhere as good as I remembered.

Good show gentlemen! I haven't watched anything new in a while, well I did watch, The Devil's Rain ( 1975 ), for the first time recently. Ernest Borgnine, Tom Skerrit, Wlliam Shatner etc. Pretty creepy for the time, especially the satanic cult stuff. I thought the special effects/makeup were great for '75 too! I did watch, Race With The Devil the other day too ( also 1975 ), I love that film, I watch my dvd at least once a year, if not twice. Peter Fonda and Warren Oates were good in that one and Lara Parker & Loretta Swit looked great, they did a good job too. The scene by the river is still creepy as shit, so is the ending, it never gets old for me. Also watched, Assault on Precinct 13 ( 1976) the other evening, watch that dvd at least once or thrice annually too. lol

I totally agree with you as I am constantly writing in to him asking for a beginnings of the’grunge’ scene ( hate that terminology), so he’s come to appreciate Nevermind 💿 lately and actually wrote back to Me when I told him both the acts of Mother Love Bone 🦴 Mudhoney were the 2 bands bonded by their lead 🎤 death before Bleach even! Yes I am talking about The Melvins of course; and Kurt used to be good friends with the 🥁 Dale Crover and John’Buzz’Osbourne back in the early years and on the album “Incesticide” he’d play on a 1/3+ of the record. Pete did say to Me and I quote:”Yes, I’ve heard of them, but I only have so much time” Okay? So sad instead of being cool and checking out Lp’s like “Lysol” Or “A Senile Animal” that he didn’t tell Me at the very least that he’ll get to it; even if he hates the genre. Not just Nirvana’s mat’l Cuz Sabbath is his favourite band! His loss I’m afraid, right? Sincerely yours, DJP ex PostMortem and Kilslug USA Boston Massachusetts 🇨🇳😬

    • @erica45645

Simmer down now... Pete is cool. He's just a guy who grew up with classic rock, prog, and 80s metal. An age when wrestling leotards, gnarly blow dried hair, and shark-tooth earrings were unironically badass. That sort of heroic vision of the world just doesn't really translate to my generation, I guess, but it only follows that that sensitive, unshowered, Goodwill, junky guy would be equally inscrutable to someone like him. Really, if you're going to hang out on this channel, you just have to accept the fact that anything with punk lineage is going to be treated like decadent rot in the tree of rock 'n roll.
PS: Your band is pretty sick 🕶

I’m not seeing any punk or hardcore bands not to mention decent alternative ( so called anyhow) like Jane’s Addiction obviously Nirvana or The 🌶 Peppers; I knew Pete did come around with Nevermind at least so perhaps he’s learning there’s something much more to them he’d missed the first time. Do ya think hun.? Sincerely yours, DJP ex PostMortem and Kilslug Boston Massachusetts USA Amerikkka or what’s left of it!

I kinda feel bad The Northman didn't do good at the box office, maybe R.Eggers should stick to mid-budget level flicks. I kinda enjoyed The Batman and Dr Strange 2 for what they are but it's obvious that both (great) directors had to play by the rules and go with what social media and marketing have been dictating for the past decade or so. I agree with Chris, not a purchase for either from me. And I f'ing hate the last 3 Spiderman flicks, it felt they were written for lame emo kids.

Rich did the version of Ten Little Indians you saw have the minute "Whodunit Break" where they stop the film right after Shirley Eaton shoots Hugh Brian to give the audience the opportunity to guess the murderer. This was the gimmick they used in the original theatrical release. A lot of tv versions and recorded versions have left this out.
