I know that comedies don't get covered on the Monster's Den, but I recently did a deep dive on the Marx Brothers and holy shit, those guys were bonkers. Absurdist comedy at its peak and just chaotic scenes left and right. Really excellent stuff.

Well, Dan and I talked Laurel and Hardy here! I love the Marx Brothers. MOSTLY the early ones before they got a bit indulgent with harp solos and romantic musical interludes. Duck Soup, Animal Crackers, A Day At The Races....world class. Some of Night At The Opera too. Groucho and Margaret Dumont together...unreal.

Hurts me to see Carl Dreyer's Vampyr get 2 less than an Annabelle movie! ;) Vampyr's re-release was in my blurays of 2022 list vid. Love that film - the first deconstruction of horror.

    • @SardonicWrath
      @SardonicWrath Рік тому

@@DavysFlicks I feel you, Davy, I really do!
Believe me, either of the other two Annabelle movies would be nowhere near this rating. Not sure if you've seen Creation, but it's got a completely different feel to me, and they did so much right here in creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere, rather than relying on mindless jumpscares like (especially) the first one, which is trash.
My ratings are also solely based on my personal enjoyment, as I'm in no way a film critic :D
If I were to take into consideration how historically significant a movie is or how impressive it is considering the year it was made, Vampyr would get a top top rating without a doubt. But when looking solely for entertainment, Creation deserved it's rating in my opinion.

I really dug Tenebre, loved Phenomena and thought Opera had a couple of standout scenes but wasn't as satisfying as the other ones. The store also had Deep Red but I watched SOT's Argento video only afterwards so I did not draw the connection. I will add Deep Red, Suspiria and Inferno to my collection but it might take me a while to get a hold of them

Recently fell into the rabbithole of the japanese anime Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and I can't stop watching it. Loads of fun and panache and cool monsters, scummy villains, some good gore, you name it.
Basically it's like superheroes, but their hero side is a spirit named "stand" that they summon.
For each chapter the story resets with a new protagonist of a different generation, but basically they're all of the same familly and fight the charismatic vampire Dio throughout the ages.
Excellent musical themes, no filler whatsoever (there's a new villain on each episode), some extremely scumbag-y villains, colourful visuals and poses, extremely creative superpowers, and high octane action and thrillers with full blast violence. And as usual with the japanese, not much subtlety and everything is turned to 11 but it's an absolute blast. There's also a ton of rock/music references in the character and creature names. Highly recommended supernatural show.
I wouldn' reccomwnd many anime of that type (shonen), but this one is head and shoulders above the rest. I say start with chapter 3 (Stardust Crusaders)

    Well, there are some...
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai on Max. Great animated series set in 1920s Shanghai, with Wing as an adolescent and the start of his friendship with Gizmo. In addition to gremlins, there are also some other human and supernatural villains that make this one interesting.
Asteroid City: Wes Anderson's latest quirky indie masterpiece. It's set in some small southwest desert town in 1955 during a junior stargazers event. The town gets quarantined after a UFO touches down and an alien appears. Essentially a metaphor for COVID, but easily one of my favorites of the year so far.
Talk to Me: a fucked up but excellent new Australian horror film, distributed here in North America by A24. Yup, another great one from them. It's about these teenagers that play this game where they hold an embalmed hand of a deceased medium, and allow themselves to be possessed for a minute and a half. Things get out of hand, however, when a few of them start having visions without even playing the game. See this one and make a show discussing it ASAP, guys!
And finally, my favorite film of the year so far, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Give Cillian Murphy the fucking Oscar now!

Good show guys, I haven't been watching a lot of horror lately, been into other things BUT I have watched plenty of other stuff. I did watch, " Duel " again for the 100th time recently, never fails to plesae me though. lol Dennis Weaver did an excellent job, portraying a terrorized motorist, the scene where the radiator hose had blown off and his Dodge was losing power trying to climb those hills, he genuinely looked frightened, when he said, ' come on, come on! " and he's pulling on the sterering wheel, trying too make the car go faster. Awesome movie. I also watched the, Twisted Sister: " We Are Twisted Fucking Sister " documentary, I've seen it before but I love the early history of the band, talk about a band who, " paid their dues" on the bar scene, took them years to get signed, even though they were killing it, selling out clubs for years. Going to watch, " The New Kids " right now, with James Spader and Lori Loughlin from '85, a cult classic that I can watch at least once annually. It creeped me out as an 11 year old back then but I still enjoy it. Thanks for some recommendations of some lesser known ( at least to me ) films guys, I'll have to check out a few of them! Love the Bruce Lee stuff!, good choice, I own all his movies, on VHS and DVD. Cheers guys!

Been streaming some bad stuff recently:
"The Perfection" (2018)-the longer-haired guy from "Wings" ('90s tv show, not McCartney's band) is a music academy head who gets really rapey if his female students make mistakes on their cellos. Lots of neat gross-out effects, but pretty dumb overall.
"The Invitation" (2022)-"Dracula" updated with pretty people, bad CGI and cringey dialogue.
    Fangs, but no fangs.
"Demonia" (1989)-definitely one of the worst Fulci movies I've seen, about the site of some witch-burnings becoming haunted centuries later, but there's just something so watchable about these awfully dubbed, gore-tastic Italian movies I can't get enough of. A lady gets mauled to death by cats, for chrissakes.
"Trick or Treats" (1982)-a woman who looks way too old to be a babysitter is stuck with this magicians' child who keeps playing mean pranks on her on Halloween, while his wackjob father breaks out of an insane asylum and comes for revenge on the mother who had him committed. Not sure if this was bad on purpose, but it certainly stinks.
"Don't Open Till Christmas" (1984)-set in England where a knife-wielding maniac keeps slashing people dressed as Santa Claus to death...but people still keep dressing up like Santa Claus. You've gotta wait till the last scene for the flashback-reveal that makes it all make sense.

Went on a mini Shark Week binge this week and was able to watch Great White and Cruel Jaws as a double feature. All I can say is that I couldn't believe what I was seeing, especially from Cruel Jaws... don't think I've ever watched a rip-off of a rip-off before.
As for some other films, here's what else I've watched:
-Perfect Blue (re-watched it again, great film)
-Nightmare on Elm Street 2 (saw for the first time actually and it was ok)
-Strip Nude for Your Killer (super sleazy giallo... I think there's a rule in that film where a woman had to be naked every five minutes haha)
-Crimes of the Future (Cronenberg's new film... it was terrible, a bunch of pseudo-intellectual garbage)
-The Blackening (a modern blaxploitation film that's pretty funny and quite entertaining.)

    Wow, some interesting choices today.
I watched a few new and older films myself. First, I'll start with the biggest disappoint of this year, Project Wolf Hunting. One of the worst films I ever seen, it felt like a kid wrote the script after playing video games and watching a bunch of action and horror films and threw everything together. It had a interesting cast of characters that get killed off within minutes of the movie and I really didn't like Alpha the human hybird creature it sucked, the plot twists were so bad their were like cartoonish at times. On a funny note, their were scenes where the characters were reading either Korean or Japanese notes and their written in English.
Back on Sunday, me and my father watched, Cocaine Bear and it was hilarious! We we're killing ourselves laughing at it and enjoyed the moments of gore within the film! We also went to see Oppenheimer and both enjoyed that. And I just got two films in today then I plan on watching along with another one I ordered a few years back and haven't gotten around watching it, Rampage. The two films I just got were The Deadly Tower with Kurt Russel and Man Bites Dog a Belgium crime/serial killer film that predates Natural Born Killers.
One film I watched also with my father a few weeks ago I really enjoyed it, In The Mouth Of Madness! It's become one of my top favorite films by John Carpenter as being a writer & reader myself I really enjoyed it. Found it better than The Ninth Gate.
Hope to enjoy these along with a bunch of other films I have to get around and watch some time.
