In my opinion….this is the most craveable dish in the world. Once I start thinking about papaya salad my mouth waters so much that I just have to eat one. I can not imagine being able to wait overnight to eat it. As always I love that you include apple in your recipe. 🥰
One of my favorite parts about traveling through Thailand was trying all the different local variations of Som Tam. Some were spicy and fragrant, others were sour and funky. I love them all.

There should be an Awesome button for your recipes. I really like how some of the elements are shredded and match-sticked. I feel like it enhances the dishes. I might be wrong, but it’s like it tastes better.
So amazing! Thank you Wil for showing the proper way to cut a papaya! I've always avoided this fruit because of the large seed at the core. Wow! Delighted, what a marvelous salad!
Som tam was my biggest culinary discovery of all times. I devoured kilograms of it whilst in Thailand. Add some sticky rice = absolute divinity. I haven't found green papaya as of yet over here, but I've done it with spiralized cucumber and carrots. Looovely.
In Thailand we have fruit salads. We use corn, grapes, apples instead of papaya, and fish sauce instead of soy sauce. We also pound all the ingredients in a mortar instead of mixing them. Additionally, if you change from papaya to raw mango (sour), add sliced shallots (without nuts, lime, basil, mint, ginger) you'll get "mango salad", which is perfect to serve with jasmine rice and fried fish. (or fried tofu). Hope you like it :)
Thank you for your great recipes. I love the images, your comments and explanations. Just one remark though, I have to admit I liked the videos without the music in the background a lot more🙈. For some reason, having only the natural sound made your videos even more authentic! In all cases, great job, thank you!

May turn out to be my new go-to for parties since it is so unusual but I think will appeal to most people. Didn't realize until I was actually mixing it up that the dressing has no oil...BONUS! One little crunch that we love to add to ours is to buy the tiny frozen anchovies( any good asian market) and quickly deep fry them till golden....draining on a paper towel...before topping on the salad. It's a lovely salty crunch to add for many salads! Thank you for a beautiful, relaxing video...you have a lovely voice and speed with which to teach us!

This salad is very delicious and impressive. Thank you for the recipe!! The sweetness from apples and the heat from the pepper makes it so good!!! Thank you again👍🏾
I made this last night, and it was fresh and wonderful. A couple comments/thoughts: - I wonder if there's another method for the shreds - maybe do the chopping on the papaya and then use a potato peeler to get the shreds? That part felt like a LOT of work, and my ability to keep my knife shallow enough for fine shreds wasn't great. - 25G is a LOT of basil and mint, and it's unclear to me if that is intended to include the leaves and stems or just leaves. I wound up using a small "bunch" of Thai basil from my H-Mart and a similar amount of mint (from my yard - lol). Looking back at the video, my piles of basil/mint look roughly proportional to yours, but they didn't weigh out to 25g (on my coffee scale, which is accurate to 0.1 grams. I also roughly chopped both to spread their goodness into more bites :) - It isn't clear how many servings this was, and since I was serving 10 people as a side dish, I wound up doubling the recipe (2 green papayas worth of shreds). That wasn't necessary - one would have been plenty. The good news is I have leftovers and it's even better today than last night! - On that note, it seems like making the dressing the morning of or night before, giving the peppers and ginger time to infuse, would be an excellent idea. - I bought and used raw peanuts, and it turned out great. Some specificity there would be a good idea. In the video they don't look raw, but guessing they're tasty either way. Thanks for a great recipe!
It's so incredible to watch your skills in the kitchen..you are amazing..both my son's are professional chefs. Watching you from Durban, South Africa!👏👏
What a great method for shredding the green papaya, Wil. I’ve often resorted to my mandoline which does an ok job - certainly not like yours though! There is a busy but humble little Thai restaurant in Hong Kong’s Pacific Place mall on the 1st floor called “Thai Basil” that serves a great version of this (and an even better pomelo salad as well) that are quite extraordinary. I’ve learned that most Thai restaurants add fish sauce to these salads, so make sure you request no fish sauce whenever & wherever you order them. Have a great Sunday up there 👆, Wil! 😎
This is the traditional way of shredding papaya in Thailand, where papaya salad is practically the national dish. Funny story... I was on a snorkeling trip in Thailand and we were served standard tourist food like bland fried rice, fried chicken, pineapple and watermelon. I noticed the kitchen staff were still preparing food and I asked what they were doing. I was told they were making their own lunch and with all smiles, they invited me into the kitchen. Rather than eating the crap they had just made for the tourists, they were making papaya salad. They let me try their papaya salad and taught me how to shred the papaya using a knife. The papaya fruits in our garden are all supported by extra sized bras to prevent the strong winds from shaking them and dropping to the ground. @7:58 Fun fact: My girlfriend hates me when I put hot chillis on her papaya. It's definiely not for the faint of heart.
love this salad, I pound the small stuff in a salad mortar and I do add fish sauce, essential IMO. There are vegetarian varieties of "fish" sauce, I have not tried any, but some seem to be pretty good and close in flavor of the real thing. Best I had was at a great Thai restaurant in Volcano on the Big Island, very traditional and if you asked for spicy, you got Thai spicy, not American spicy. We went for not so spicy and it was still quite hot, but not so that it burned all the flavors away. Gonna make it again as soon as I get my hands on a green papaya again.
Yeah I'm definitely going to try that one when I get to Vietnam in a couple months. Here in the US I make a great cole slaw that I can eat in big mounds every day so I'm looking forward to trying trying the papaya salad as an alternate.

Really…? Ok. This is my dinner tomorrow. I have everything, including the papaya which is growing in my yard. I love papayas. I love that it’s green and I love the look of this salad. My only regret is that I didn’t think of it first 😉 I’ll be updating you on my results….
🥳🥳🥳
This salad is beautiful. Definitely will try.
😎🙌🏻
Thank you for the great recipe and an amazing video presentation. Loved the papaya salad back inThailand and eager to try your version.
Awesome. 4 days ago you showed us how to make drunken noodles (which is my favorite Thai dish) and today you're showing us how to make som tum which is also one my favorite Thai salads. Happy that you shared with us my favorite. Just need to learn how to make the Thai sweet tea and I’m all set 😂
We do have a very old Thai tea video 😎 Excited we are cooking together 🙌🏻🥳
Hello Salad looks so good , I will try it, I remember my grandmother always make candy with green papayas so good 🙏🏼👍🏼😋
🥳🥳🥳
Oh wow!
What's your grandmother's recipe?
Violet this is the recipe,,,She cut the green papaya and let it dry for a day or two then she will cook it with a little bit of water and sugar then when it was cook she add a little bit of baking soda to help caramelize the papaya then he let dry in wax paper it was so good 😊
@@conniegonzalez6068 Wonderful! I look forward to trying it! Thanks so much!
Definitely trying this when I can. I've made more of thia channels recipes than anyone elses. They've all been delicious.
So glad to hear that you have and you are in for a real treat 🙌🏻🥳
Made this!! Yum!!! My fav all time salad!!! Thank you for the recipe!!!
It’s too good 😎🙌🏻
Hi @yeunhmancooking!
I tried this recipe with Zucchini and carrots instead of Papaya as I couldn’t find one in my local stores. OMG we love it. I love all your videos and my 8 year old daughter says she loves your voice 🥰
So great to hear and glad you are all enjoying! 🙌🏻
Wow! What an interesting, and colorful salad!
👨🏻🍳👌🏻
My coworker from Thailand, she made great papaya salad 🤤 Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
That is a gorgeous technique for cutting the papaya. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite Thai dishes, I'm so excited to try your recipe. Really beautifully done, both recipe and the shooting of this video! You found yourself a new subscriber, thank you ✌🏼
🙌🏻🥳👨🏻🍳
This is NOT a thai dish. Thum maak hoong" aka papayas salad originated from Laos 🇱🇦 . You all incorporated into your thai dish menu
@@viexay SO sorry!!! I've not been so lucky to actually travel to many places in this world. It's just delicious. I'm in the US where everything comes from somewhere else.
@@lorenlash9174 no worries. Not alot of people know of Laos. It's a small landlocked country . We share alot of similarities with Thailand. Culture, food, & language so it can get easily mistaken
Looks divine. Bet that is highly addictive 😍
It really is 😎🙌🏻
Sounds like how one would describe a good friend "sweet, spicy and a little nutty' :D
😆😆😆
Thank you for sharing, looks healthy will try this soon.
🙌🏻
Thank you ! That is my favorite salad too ! Now I know how to make it ! Can’t wait to try now
Omg thank you so much this is my favourite thing ever and it’s very hard to find -or at least find vegan- in restaurants in Ireland. Can’t wait to make!!
👨🏻🍳👌🏻
It looks deliciously beautiful. Can I get the strings from the green papaya with a peeler used for noodles?
There is something very zen about the way you cook
🤗
That looks incredible!! Thank you for sharing!
🥳🥳🥳
The papaya fruits in our garden are all supported by extra sized bras to prevent the strong winds from shaking them and dropping to the ground.

Fun fact: My girlfriend hates me when I put hot chillis on her papaya. It's definiely not for the faint of heart.
Very passionate demonstration indeed!!😍
🙌🏻
love this salad, I pound the small stuff in a salad mortar and I do add fish sauce, essential IMO.
I'll omit the ginger, soy sauce, basil & mint. Palm sugar instead of maple syrup & use Himalayan salt & tamarind.
Yeah I'm definitely going to try that one when I get to Vietnam in a couple months. Here in the US I make a great cole slaw that I can eat in big mounds every day so I'm looking forward to trying trying the papaya salad as an alternate.
My favourite chef... beautiful music, all so good
That is very kind of you 🤗
Brilliant idea. I must find chance to try it as most of the supermarket papaya is quite huge😂. Yuhhh
Oh yeah, definitely make it once I buy all the ingredients!
Super fresh and delicious 😌
Me gusto mucho la receta, saludos desde Guatemala
One of my favorite dishes. Thanke you so very much Dear. 🙏💐
I love this salad! It's my go to in the summer.
Though I cant't get green Papaya here, so I make it with turnips. 🤐
Ah! That's a great substitute! Thank you for the idea, here in Spain it's almost impossible to find green papaya, Will deffinitely try with turnips!
When it comes to slicing You are truly a Master at it! Always enjoyable to watch you at it. And yes, this salad must taste amazing!
🙌🏻🥳👨🏻🍳
I love this recipe, it's absolutely amazing. Whenever I spot a green papaya in my Asian market, I have to pick it up 😊
