Lol the guy was like "if you like your hair long with one layer, wear it like that and ignore what I say," and was so friendly throughout the video and simply recommended layers for women who feel their hair is thin/flat. And everyone's response is, "HOW DARE YOU. IM GONNA HAVE MY HAIR HOWEVER I WANT IT." lol, useless bunch of people
Thank you! I really didn't expect that many people to get so upset over the first 10 seconds and not even watch the rest of the video before jumping to the comment section. It's kind of sad really. Shows how some folks can be so quick to get triggered without seeking any insight on what they're so triggered about. I wouldn't say they're useless but I do wish people would get less offended so quickly about things nowadays.
@@justinhickoxI think some people are attached to their long one length hair in deeply emotional ways and perhaps clicked on the video out of defensiveness, not curiosity. A title that commands with a capital NEVER is probably what they are reacting to. Or, perhaps they might not have even watched the video before commenting because you say to ignore the rest of the video if people are satisfied with their long single length hair. I think there would be less of a reaction if the title was softer and said something like ‘why to avoid’ instead of NEVER. Try to recognize the power of your title messaging and of reactionary clicks on social media. Also, when considering long hair, how it is styled changes a lot. Some people, myself included, style their long, single length hair in ways that complement their face and add shape. I respect the use of layering as a style, but it’s just not my vibe.
@@kannakanina6552 i absolutely hear you! I also agree that the title is aggressive. Unfortunately, that’s what is often needed to get views on social. I’d LOVE to use titling that more closely resonates with my messaging but when I do (like using the words “look more youthful” instead of “look younger, OR “Get the best long hair” vs “Don’t make this Mistake”, the videos don’t get clicked and therefore never get seen. It’s a fact I’ve learned over my 12 years of making content that I hate but have come to understand is part of the process. The thing that’s sad with this is that it’s a case study in what I consider to be a large part of the reason behind the divide in our society. Goes like this: see headline, assume all details based on headline, feel strong emotion, yell loudly. There’s no, seek insight…then react. Simply, get triggered and react. Just my .02 cents. I appreciate your respectful insight!
@@justinhickox I definitely agree that the social tendency has moved towards an uninformed intense reaction rather than thoughtful responses. I also understand that there must be a balance between risking rage-baiting and having too few views. Basically, content creators must follow the algorithm over their own instincts and practicalities to succeed with a modern audience, which is largely primed by the fast-paced, reactive nature of social media. All-in-all, everyone becomes less human because of how far we lean into technology.. I find it all fascinating as a social concern. I’m glad to go against the grain and offer a bit of critical thinking and nuance for what it’s worth. My two cents. I’m happy to take a step back from the modern world, trim my own hair, and style it with the same creativity I apply to the rest of my life. I appreciate your honesty, it’s refreshing!
Please consider that some women grow their hair long as a child, we heard of one lady who went in a nursing home, they cut her hair, and she gave up on herself and died shortly after. If an elder woman has only her hair remaining out of a lifetime of fading memories, please remind others who view her hair style as unattractive, should consider yet may be the most beautiful thing to them. That really goes with any hair style and women get confused men do not like a hair style when they encourage (intent) a different one. Something simple like a compliment 'Oh I love your hair! I imagine you wearing a different way and that would look fantastic too!' Then let them make the choice.
You know what? I am sick and tired of men telling me what I and can't wear, how I should act, how I should wear my hair. I'm over 50 and may choose how I want to appear. I like my long hair. It took a long time to grow it out this long and to care for it and it's gorgeous. A woman doesn't need someone like you feeding her insecurities. Tell her she's beautiful. Done. She's been through enough scrutiny her entire life. By the time you reach your fifties as a woman, you should be trusted to clothe and style yourself as you see fit.
Truth. However well or not the rest of the world sees it, be comfortable with yourself! Although he does say "if you love your long hair keep it" in the beginning of the video.
@@Jescenya The only thing I wonder is where does all this anger/angst from the "long hair" ladies come from? Where are the people telling you that you can't have long hair? Of course, wear your hair long if you like. Nobody really cares one way or the other. There seems to be some kind of strange flailing at windmills here. Really, no one cares that much what you do.

Omgosh, Justin you're speaking my hair love language! I moved to CA 18 years ago and have been through 12 hair stylists who have all butched my hair in those horrible choppy layers! As a result I stopped getting haircuts and now am sitting on my long, boring, unflattering hair. Thank you for this video. I want long-ish hair that compliments my face. I'm soooo scared to try again to find someone who knows what they're doing.
Thanks for these tips, Justin. I’ve been cutting my own long hair, thanks to YT videos, since Covid. In 2 weeks, I’m getting my first professional cut in years. Your videos are so helpful to be able to communicate well with my new stylist ❤❤❤. I really appreciate you 🎉
Your hair looks great and you are very pretty. Like the Barbara Mandrell song said, you can eat crackers in my bed anytime lol. I'm getting ready to turn 60 and thankfully not bald like most guys my age. I don't have hardly any grey either, due to taking vitamin B6 and other things. I take alot of AMPK and NAD boosters such as Metformin, Berberine, and NMN. I'm not diabetic, but Metformin doesn't cause hypoglycemia so it's safe for non diabetics to take. I'm not 100% sure that these things reverse aging, but that's what I read on the internet. I'm still having a hard time believing I'm 60. I feel like I did at 18. Have you noticed any changes since you've started your 60's?
I'm a petite 61 yr old female, and I tend to disagree, lol, ;) My fine hair goes down to almost my waist and I LOVE IT! I also have people constantly telling me I look younger than my age, as well. While I do love long layers, it takes more work. I'll stick with just trimming my bangs/ends. To be honest, I don't care whether people like my hair or not or if it's the "in" look, but am totally happy and grateful that I can have long hair.
I'm the same as you. My hair is of 1a type (straight, silky, relatively thin) and if I had it layered, the ends would look like mouse tails really. Layers is not a fit-all trend. They look perfect on ladies with voluminous wavy, curly or coily hair (the tighter the curls, the more prominent the layers). For women with straight hair that's a big no-no, maybe with the exception of women with type 1c (coarse hair, predominantly straight, but can hold a bit of wave). I don't know, I'm just happy with what I feel that suits me.
💯Triggered much 🤣 I’m 65 and his advice was great!! He didn’t say your hair makes you look old🙄If you don’t know anything about style don’t watch hair videos 🤣😂
If a man tells me I am wrong, I am sure he is right. If a woman doesn't want to please men, then she is free to do whatever suits her. No need to be angry with others.
Hmmm, if your poor and you can't pay for repeated hair cuts, you let it grow and have it trimmed a couple times a year. I am a senior on a fixed income and I don't care about fancy styling anymore!! 🤔
Many years of mistakes when I had long hair. Justin is right, many stylists cut hair “by the book” - exactly how they were taught. Beauty schools teach basic cuts, the same teaching methods since 1940, zero creative freedom. Just enough to pass the boards to be licensed. I know..my daughter was a stylist but after she got licensed went to an advanced training school run by a high end salon that teach techniques Justin described. Customized to different hair texture. Only highly experienced and creative stylists know how to avoid making your hair look fractured. My daughter is no longer behind the chair. Now works as a Relationship Manager for a software company that caters to Salons and Barbershops. She has clients all over the country and loves it!
Exactly, I'm not here to please anyone but myself. That's how you get when you're over 50... and I'm more than that. This pup telling us how we are to wear our hair or not. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Perhaps he should change his hairstyle. Lol
Hey forgets that when we get older we often have thinner hair than we did before. I realize that layers can help with that, but when you don't have much hair to start with, nope, it does not. Yeah but he's going to have to realize that many of us don't want to fool with their hair anymore. We don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on something that no one else is going to notice.
2:26 Oh my gosh, you just confirmed that I layered my hair correctly!! 😂 I had curly hair and it was looking too thick at the bottom, BUT, my hair actually isn’t thick so I knew I didn’t want to mess with at least half of my lower hair so I only layered the top/crown at the ends, and it made my curls look amazing!! It looks good straight too! Great advice! ❤
@@connymanero4649It depends on the Hair quality. I now keep a Lob for my very Thick Brunette Hair. Super Long Straight hair does not flatter anyone. I say that as someone who despises Pixie and Short cuts 🎉
I grew out my hair to have it really long one last time. I'm 70. The hair was gorgeous but it dragged down my jowls zone and made my chubby cheeks pop forward. Last week I had 4" cut off and the front layered. It's glorious, still looking long and sunny in the back with lots of motion and flattery in the front.
Good for you! ❤ I’m 65 and I’m growing mine out one last time too. I went from blond to a copper and I love it. I’m not too old that I don’t want to experiment.
This is exactly what I did too! My hair was past my waist but thin at the ends. Now it’s mid back, fuller and layered in the front and back. I love it!! I’m 62😊
I am an older girl with long hair and you are absolutely right about the thinning due to the cut! I just learned a few things from you and I appreciate it thank you. 😊
Yes, but it would look a lot better with some tailoring. He's not saying that she shouldn't have long hair, it's just that one length is not as flattering as it could be. It's OK though, if you are attached to your hair and it makes you comfortable, that's what's important! Not everybody has to make it their goal to look their best!
Watch and comprehend what he is saying in the video. He was not attacking long hair per se but offering a better way of keeping and styling it long .He’s a hair dresser so he knows what he is talking about.
Thank you for those great tips. I did watch the video to the end, because I was ready to hear what you had to say. And you do have great points which will make a woman look amazing, if she chooses to follow them. I've read some of the comments and thought they were off point because they didn't watch the entire video.
The first image of long hair was gorgeous and youthful. I think it's the short hair on older women that ages them. Just keep it fresh and clean and shiny.
I agree. Pictures of these women with long hair actually inspire me. It makes them look young and free. Or like, I don't have to conform to some standard just because I am old. And it looks great. This guy's just flat wrong.
I actually love the one length photo on your thumbnail. I think she looks awesome. Personally I’ve never had good layers. I think it’s just my hair. Straight, heavy but puffy ends. My hair has to be dried with a hairdryer and I’m just not dealing with layers. I live it the south and layers just don’t work for me. It’s so much work and just never looks good.
I‘m 48 and have very thick and heavy long hair. My stylist talked me into getting layers and that was the beginning of a two year nightmare. I use to crown braid my hair during work and gardening, and as soon I had the layers strands and single hair popped out everywhere and made me look like a scarecrow. I told my stylist of this in advance and he assured me I‘ll be fine. He even showed me how to contain them, but it took BOTTLES over a course of two years and tons of pins - only to pop again as soon I left the house. Additionally to that all the spray plus the exposure to the sun outside dried my hair out to the max. I never spent so much time and effort trying to style my hair before in my life, and I eventually ended up losing 20 centimeters that needed to go due to the damage. So many clients and friends asked me what happened to my beautiful hair during this time, some even asked me if I was sick, and I’m still not back to my original length. I spent almost $200 for a „makeover“ and ended up looking like a mess for two years. I‘m 1/2 indigenous and my hair is really important to me, as part of my culture. All I can say is - be very careful making this decision. Once the hair is off, it‘s off, and you might regret it for a long time.
Layers weaken the bottom of the hair if you like it longer. It will look scraggly unless you cut your hair often which is what this guy mansplaining wants us to do.
That is why I stopped going to hairdressers. Everytime I was there they wanted dye my natural hair color which I super unique golden blonde and cut them to the maximum. Long hair are maintaineless especially if you are cut your endings and give it a good treat with masks. No need for “makeovers” and my heart is bleeding reading your story.
I’m 76 and had a cut and highlights. She assured me she knew how to do it. It turned orange underneath. I only wanted the crown done. My hair has suffered for a year. Tried another hairdresser and he only sold me L’Oréal products. I’m back to doing it myself. I’m better than them!
same experience, never again! I learned how to cut my own hair if I'm unhappy I only have myself to blame and won't risk a felony over blaming the stylist lol yes I'm that serious about my hair

Layers are horrible. I will never get them again. Straight and blunt. Don't care if it is 'shapeless', like they keep telling me.
Thank you for letting me know how to speak to my hairdresser about this. I am over 60 with very long hair and bangs. When I asked my hairdresser to add layers to the sides but to keep the back looking long she said she didn't have any idea how to do that and said it would be a "mullet". I told her I was looking to "update" my style, but my thin ends would look terrible layered. She then told me she could not help me unless I found some photos and examples for her to see. I was quite frustrated. Now I better understand all of the things about layering and what I would like to see - thank you!!! And also, I don't understand some of these comments, I heard you several times advocating folks to do or keep whatever made them happy and feel free not to follow any of your advice! I love that!
I’m 57 and feel like I’ve been stuck in the Rachel Green hairstyle for years. I’d really like to try something different but it’s scary to cut my hair short when it’s been long almost all my life. I really appreciate your advice and also like that you tell people to embrace what they have if they love it.❤
I’m 51 and recently cut my hair into a bob… growing it long again and I have two “hair goal” photos and one is of Caroline, the woman in your thumbnail pic. She is absolutely beautiful and I think her hair looks amazing exactly how it is. Can’t wait until I’m 53 and my one length hair looks just like hers.
Good on you Debbie ... I am 53 and made the mistake of getting my hair cut into a bob two years ago. Fast forward two years and my hair is quite long again and I can do so many things with it such as sticking it back in a pony tail. The bob aged me (in my younger years I looked brill with a bob) whereas the longer hair rejuvenates me ... never again am I getting it cut.
I dont have that much hair, its rather fine and there is lot of breakeage but I decided to take a good care or it and it actually starts to reach my chest. I am 45 and my hair is half grey half brown but I will not cut it and not bleach it.
Yes! Cut your layers yourself! I switched to cutting my own hair a few years ago (I have long layered hair) because I simply wasn't getting the look I wanted from stylists. I tried everything from the $450 haircut and color to the $18 supercuts and found that I could do everything I need to do on my own. Roots, highlights w/foils, and cuts. It's great that you are encouraging people to just try it! Get yourself a good pair of scissors and give the front layers a try! Love your videos, BTW.
Yes, I use to go often to a stylist but as time went on they always left. Now when I come out of a salon "what was I thinking, I could have done this myself"! Lol!
I’ve done that! Couldn’t find a stylist who did what I asked, I provided pictures too, they always cut my hair how they wanted it 🤬. Long layers don’t work for me, I need volume on top, I have cut my own hair, it’s easy. Thank You & take care! 🎄🥳
I'm 10 months into growing out my natural colour and letting my grey run free. I'm 18 months into cutting, layering and thinning my own hair. Best decisions I ever made.
I have to say I finally did this a few years ago and never stop getting comps on my hair and how young I look. The only problem w some hair stylists is the back layers never quite blend well enough into that lowest layer one length first tier you showed
73 here and rocking my below-the-waist silverblond hair. 😊 As long as I can remember hair stylists have aggressively pushed short hair on women so they'll stay in business. ✂️💲 If you love your long locks don't let ANYONE intimidate you! ☮

This is soooo true. My Hair was below my Bottom, and I felt I needed a change so I had it cut, really short, to my ears. It was the first time in my life, that a Hairdresser tried to talk me out of cutting Hair. I am growing it back now, I am lucky, my Hair grows fast.
I think this is a wonderful video, and very helpful for those who may want to consider changing up their hairstyle. For me, I'm 59 and have had the same exact hair style since I was around 17/18. Long, straight and parted in the middle. And I love it just as much today, as I did back then. Thumbs up!
I am approaching 60, my hair is long enough to sit on. I have never received a single negative comment about the length of my hair but I do receive many compliments. I have had long hair all my life and I am not about to cut it. You will find that many older women here in Northern Europe do have hair of this length and are proud of it.
If you are attached to your long one length hair, and that's what makes you comfortable, that's what's important! There is no rule that says everybody has to try to look their best!
Yeah. I am 55 and I have very long hair. And slowly graying naturally. All I get from people is wow your hair is so beautiful. Never gonna cut it off. Absolutely NO short hair for me. The shortest I go is mid back now and then but I always end up growing it back out. 🙂
I´m 63, look like 50 and have long long hair and will always have it. I always got compliments from women and men, how beautiful I´m, how beautiful my hair is and how wonderful it is that I never wanted to cut it and never dyed it. I do what I want. And nobody tells me that over 50 I can´t wear long hair.
Absolutely! And I would never tell anyone what to do. Just a recommendation on ways to get more movement in your long hair and accentuate features you may want to highlight.
I'm 73 & short hair is both aging & unflattering. My hair is medium thick but baby fine, thickest on top, thin along all hairlines. So I started doing my own front layers 50 years ago after a couple of stylists left me with a shortbob instead of the Charlie's Angel layers of either Farah or Jacqeline since they both have thick hair. I wish the stylist had just told me "you don't have enough hair for that look". My hair is in great shape & I don't color it or use a lot of products, although I (rarely) use some mouse or gel underneath or a very light spritz of spray. Being comfortable with who you are is much more important than sporting the latest trendy style. Thanks for the insights.
People look their age that's the first thing that they have to accept so it doesn't matter what hairstyle you have if you're 80 you look at if you're 60 you look 60. Accept aging.
I could write a book on this subject. I am in my mid 50's and have always had very long thick hair. For decades I had gone to a salon every eight to ten weeks. I cannot tell you how many times I have left the salon with a haircut I hate, that is unmanageable or had been completely hacked to pieces by a person that should not even be allowed to use scissors. Countless hairdressers that have no idea what they are doing. Or if you do find a good one, next time you go back the person has left or moved far away, so you don't get to build trust with one person. And each time I go it costs me at least $300 because when you have very long hair they charge you more. The last time I visited a salon about 6 years ago I wanted layers as you suggested. Well some of them were so short they didn't sit in with the rest of my hair. Most of my hair was on the floor. I left completely devastated and it took two years for my hair to grow back to what it was. I will never go to a hairdresser again. I have no trust in the industry at all. So I will keep my long hair no matter what you say.
Good on you Helen ... I gave up on hairdressers years ago as they always got 'scissor happy' on me ... Bought myself a pair of hairdressing scissors and have never looked back ...
The last line was not necessary, Helen. He said do whatever works for YOU and is KIND ENOUGH to teach you how to PROPERLY cut your own hair. What gets better than that! You are all so traumatized by your hairdressers, or your ex-husbands or standards set by the Kardashians that you're taking it all out on this poor guy who is ACTUALLY agreeing and helping you!😂
I'm in my 30s (so within the age range where he still finds long unlayered hair acceptable, I guess) and I have long, one-length hair because it's the cheapest, least time consuming hair you can have short of a buzz cut (unless it get TOO long, like waist length. I'm talking armpit to mid-back here). I don't have to style it every day like short hair or layers. Even though you CAN wear layered hair up, it looks messy so you have to fuss around just as much as you would if you had styled it to wear it down instead. And short hair just plain NEEDS daily styling. I don't have to get professional haircuts, which are expensive, time consuming and never turn out how you want anyway. If you had a good cut once, nobody can replicate it. Including the person who first did it. I just search and destroy split ends and every once in a while, I have someone I trust who can cut a straight line take a bit off. Both my mother who is 60 and my grandmother in her 80s have long, one-length hair. My grandmother always had short hair until she could no longer mess around with pin curlers and hair dryers. My mom had all kinds of cuts, some of them fabulous others not so much, but ALL more time consuming than plain long, one-length hair. I'm pretty much convinced that they just want money. Long, undyed, one-length hair makes them the least amount of money. If you do come in, it's about once a year for a proper trim. If they can get you hooked on layers or color, you'll have to come back every two or three months or so.
I understand and have gone through similar. My hair is fine though. I had very long hair in high school. One time I went with a friend who was getting her hair cut. I was going to get bangs only. Well my friend and the hairdresser ganged up on me and talked me into getting a short layered cut up to my my neck. I literally hated it. It was flat and boring. When I tried curling it. I looked like a puffy cotton ball. I spent years crying over my hair and being jealous of women with long hair. My hair is long again and I trim my own bangs and back.
I'm not over 50, but I get you. I usually just have a straightforward trim these days. Cheap, cheerful, easy to maintain. I have had issues with hairdressers cutting layers too short in the past (and sometimes wanting to take a lot more length off because "who has hair that long these days anyway?) and then it's a pain in the neck as I have to be able to tie it back for work so then you have to mess about with bobby pins and hairspray until it grows out. Layers also mess with the ability to do some styles like long plaits neatly as all the different lengths want to start working their way loose and poking out if you have a hair texture similar to mine. And I get compliments fair more often with long braids/plaits than with a straight down hairstyle layered or not. It's not a one style fits everyone situation that no one over x age should be doing.
I'm 60, and my long hair is all one length down to and past my behind. You can not understand nor believe how many compliments I get on my hair. I've had complete strangers take one look at me and become instantly happy and smile and treat me with honor and respect. Long hair is a woman's glory and her crown, it's a law of nature, and people instantly do really get turned on by it. It is a tremendous honor and gift to wear my hair long or in a gorgeous bun with pins and hair jewels, stars, snowflakes, crochet roses etc . Ladies, hair dressers will never stop wanting to cut your hair. They'll be always telling you what they want for you. I have no split ends, my hair is healthier now than when I was young. Truly truly I tell you, that if you want your hair down to your behind you will have so much attention so many people respecting you, and I want to encourage you to go for it❣️👍 And stay away from hair dressers. Seriously. If you want your hair down to and past your behind, never go to a hair dresser, they will only make you cry. Be happy and free with your hair. Use good shampoo and conditioner, various oils, don't use electric hair tools, let it air dry, use a boar bristle brush and a real turtle comb. Wash it only once a week. Enjoy it and believe me, others will enjoy it too!
My hair is long - past my waist, grey, healthy, shiny with no split ends. I get complimented on my hair all of the time and most young people think I pay to get this colour. They also want to know what shampoo, conditioner and treatments I use to get it this long and lustrous. Every six or seven months I head in to my very talented hairdresser for a three inch trim. She hates cutting my hair because she feels it doesn't need to be cut (I'm pretty sure she cuts less than what I ask for 😅). I love my hair and I wouldn't do anything differently. Check out Anita Von Holdt and the lovely Caroline Labouchere (the woman pictured in this video.) All that matters is that you are confident and love yourself.
@@sparklynurse For a few years past, I would cut 14 inches off my hair every January myself. That's how long it was.. and it was still long after I would take the 14 inches off. And by January the next year all the 14inches had grown back - so I would do it again and I did that for a few years and then I stopped doing that. No more cutting for me. I'm really enjoying who I am and I'm thankful to let my hair alone, and take care of it just like it is, while it's simply being it's lovely self. ❤️🙌👍
For one thing your hair sounds like it's beautiful and another your breaking the rules set for older women! Chances are if one did not look good with long hair when young, probably not going to look good when older.
@@dianab5286 I was recently at my mother's funeral, she was 93. My cousins arrived and couldn't believe my hair, they had not seen me for at least 7 years, and before when we would be together I always had my hair up in a bun so they have not seen it down till at the funeral and they we're touching my hair and complimenting me on it and I must say I enjoyed their attention to help take my mind off missing my dear mother. And God used my hair to be attractive that day to many people who hadn't seen me in a long time and even my male cousins complimented me on it and were smiling with big smiles and twinkles in their eyes over my hair. It's just so long people love it. That's what is so beautiful, the length. If you should desire long hair, I encourage you to be encouraged about letting it get long, and to feel absolutely free to do so. And to not concern yourself with others who want style or the latest fashion. Long hair itself is just plain attractive. It's not a style or fashion, that's what's amazing is that long hair commands everyone's attention. It does that all by itself. It's a phenomenon. Absolutely feel good about it 👍 and set yourself free from all the things everyone else is doing. It's surely up to everyone. I encourage all who desire to have long hair, don't be afraid to do it. Enjoy it, and everyone else will too. Thin or thick, gray or brown, white or blond, it's only the length that is amazing to everyone , I find everyone everywhere sees the length: Wow,! Look at how "long" your hair is!" . That's what's so beautiful to the onlookers. I believe it's a natural law, long hair just seems to be almost magical. No matter what thickness or color. ❤️
@@dianab5286 Wish women would quit talking about the "rules" set for older women. There are no rules. I see women going around w/ long hair, scraggly ends, all the time. Sure, it was the custom in our grandmother's day to go shorter in older age, but that hasn't been the case for a very long time.

My hair is very straight, it's graying, I'm 66, my hair has never held a perm longer than a few days, and I've decided to just go with it. My favorite style right now for my below-the-waist hair is a low bun, twisted three times around the hair elastic, and it stays put all day. I wash it once a week with rice water shampoo and condition it with rice water conditioner, and let it dry naturally all day on a Sunday. I don't use heat on it. It's in such good condition. It costs me next to nothing to maintain. One of these days I'll be getting a straight-across-the-back haircut up to just above the bra line, and I'll send my 12" braids to Wigs For Kids -- and start growing my hair out all over again for the next couple of years.
This is great!! As I mentioned in the video. If you have long one length hair and you love it, ignore me completely. The thing I love is that you know what you like, you feel good in it, and you’re rocking it.
That's amazing! It's a goal to reach and for a good deed. My hair is of the 1a type (straight, silky, can't hold curls, thin texture). Going one-length with trimmed ends is the best option for me too. I've seen hairdressers' videos where ladies come with super long, frizzy hair and the hairdresser does a crazy transformation with cutting their hair into a bob or long bob plus hair dye with highlights plus layers and it makes me want to scream "no, no, lady, you just needed a good anti-frizz and trimming the ends, why this trouble now?!" The resulting haircuts are very high-maintenance with high-effort blow dry needed (plus more frequent washing of hair) and the color is also expensive to maintain, without the possibility of having highlights redone on the roots. Real trouble. I understand it's Justin's job to recommend more high-maintenance hair in order to keep providing his services. Many women enjoy treating themselves to that, spoiling themselves frequently with haircuts, treatments and multi-layered highlights or lowlights, and luckily they keep the business running well. I on the other hand have got limited time and money to go with. And definitely limited hair "canvas" for any ardent hairstylist to work with. So I just keep my thin, precious hair by myself, doing whatever is best for it.
I DEF don't agree with this one. Caroline Labouchere (pictured on the "COVER" of this video) is so absolutely gorgeous, probably BECAUSE of her hair. Her facial features are already so beautifully prominent naturally; Those cheekbones, eyes and her gorgeous eyebrows, don't Need accentuating; Her one-length hairstyle serves instead to tastefully frame her features AND the one-length does it in such a timeless, super-feminine style. I mean, she's a WORKING model. I follow her on INSTA, and that mane of hers looks utterly amazing loose & curly...up in a bun...in a low sleek ponytail; Classic, Posh, age-less. *SIGH* I've admired her chic style since I first discovered her.
100% agree! Layers can look cheep while one-lenght hair is timeless, chic and classical. If you have good quality hair and take care of it well it is a treasure that can stand on its own without the need to ‘accentuate’ things in your face
This title honestly is very good. What I find interesting is that women are so easily triggered by your question. After all you put a question mark ❓ at the end. You also went back and forth with if you like it wear it. Then made suggestions on other style and why. I am sixty two and have long have. I do agree adding layers has really brought out the features of my bone structure. It has stopped the long drawn look to my hair. Thank you Justin.
Really good video! Thank you for pointing out the reasons I have shied away from layered haircuts over the past years!! The mistakes you listed are what has happened to me in the past but I didn't know how to label what was wrong. Have a wonderful day ❤
I'm 58 and I have very long hair and get nothing but compliments on it. I wear it long because I have the type of hair that reacts to humidity and gets frizzy no matter what products I use. It became difficult to control, I hated all the products in my hair and ultimately it's healthier to have it long and put it back in ponytail or a braid rather than all the styling products and time it takes only to have it not work. I don't want to go through that anymore.
I’m 58 and have all one length long hair it’s very healthy but very thin so no layers for me been there done that ! I think it would make me look older if I was grey but I’m not! I never wear it up always long and down I get compliments a lot and it’s the easiest hair style I’ve ever had! Wash and go !
That’s awesome! And if it works that well for you, that’s absolutely what you need to stick with! The most important thing is that you wear the hairstyle, that you love! Nothing, I say, or anyone else says, should matter at that point. Thanks for checking out the video and sharing this insight.
@user-wh5ir4fo4rI am pretty sure that he went over very succinctly, the purpose of his helping video. Perhaps you can listen to it again for your answer.
On board with this comment. Over 50 and looking for style advice and yes, the title caught my attention so well worded. Well over 50, did not feel attacked by Justin for my current one length hair at all. Thanks for an informative video Justin. Being able to manage it at home is a plus. Now, how about us curly headed monsters? I’m done with straightening!!
SEEN Curl Creme has made a huge difference for me and my monster curls! It doesn't weigh my hair down and it comes in fragrance free! I use it after washing and for daily styling, wet or dry. Now that my hair is silver-ish, I had to cut down on the blow dryer and hot roller routine, as heat isn't good for grays. After 60+ years of fighting my curls, I can finally wear them natural, thanks to SEEN! (Sorry; I sound like an infomercial! 😂)
I totally agree! Which is why I mentioned that specific point in the middle of the video. I’m simply expressing how layers can amplify the natural beauty of long hair.
My beautiful long brown hair looks very flattering . My petite, slim frame, is clothed in form fitting, modern clothing. I pull it back into a ponytail for my almost daily gym workouts. I am in my early 70’s and my hubby loves the way I look, and so do I!
Most husbands don't want their wives to change anything at all despite the fact that they get bellies and go bald themselves. My ex-mother-in-law kept her bouffant hair from the 50s because her husband liked it, it was seriously tragic
This is GREAT advice Justin! Sorry so many people commenting are completely misunderstanding your intent. Now im going to go check out the video you suggested at the end! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing knowledge!
Thank you SO much. I fully understand that the intro and thumbnail can be triggers for som people. I do wish they'd consider watching the video before assuming things and screaming about them in the comments though. I appreciate your support here.
@@justinhickoxThen perhaps you should show women the respect of titling the video in a respectful way rather than in an offensive, belittling way. If you get shit it's not on those who comment, it's what you are asking for by the judgemental assumptions and belittling of women, telling them what they've been told for decades on end. If your intent with the video is to support women in their individual and empowerment you seriously need to reflect that in the titles. We don't f--k about at this age, we set boundaries and we tell it like we see it. If you want the views you're not doing a good pulling the viewers in if you're complaining about not having watched the video before commenting. I'm one of the ones that won't be watching it, simply because of the offensive title, and it's not the first time I've seen one of your videos titled in similar ways.
I sent my long silver hair at 60 pics to your gmail. Proper layers, hair condition, makeup, and clothing palette, are important, indeed. I had a ball with my silver shimmer. And even more when layers were added.🫢 One length can detract from beauty for some and enhance for others. I'll take YOU " man telling me how to do my hair ANY time. Effects of election trauma are clear. Hissing harpies🐍😂
I've tried long hair once in decades. I have very slow growing, dark brown, fine hair, not super thin. I always ended up tying it back, just a small gust of wind would blow it all over the place. So mostly had the pixie cut or a Louise Brooks bob once or twice. I have a elfin face and big doe eyes. So I reckon it suits me just fine. Mary Quant, Twiggy , Audrey , Liza Minelli sort of gave me confidence that way. I used to pass Vidal Sassoons salons, when I was a poor student and get free haircuts. Lol. I admire long thick hair from afar though. I suppose some layers can give a bit of a lift and is less severe. Depends on the individual. Its a lot about being confident, adventurous and being happy in your skin.
@@ytb40 Exactly , I love White hair all kinds of styles, its fascinating. I don't know where mine is going to go. My great grans was pure white and had a bun. Where I'm from , the North of UK. Older ladies used to call the inbetween, salt and pepper, or battle ship grey. They had rollers in under scarves. Setting lotions and perms. Sitting under big hair dryers etc. The sixties was liberation from that in a way, my mother had "no body" in her hair, and did the the gamine mod cut thing. Her mom used to twist her fine hair into all sorts of shapes. It suited her, though she did have long hippy locks too. Short hair is actually quite hard to maintain. I mean look at Marilyn Monroe, she had shortish hair and it framed her pretty face. I'm quite intrigued by the whole thing, of how you build foundation and make the best of locks in general. Super. Cheers ❤ ❤
I love the result of the beautiful lady who didn't want color...I have exactly the same issues and I also love the "Bob" thanks for the tips on lowlights. I'll know what to look for when I get this done. Thanks!
Long hair is good, you just have to style it, braid it, pony tail it, bun it, etc. I am 58 and have bigger longer hair now than when I was in my 20s. In my 20s, I was always layering it and cutting it. Now I brush and nourish and play with it, one length. I usually hold it up on top of my head with a headband, silk scarf, ribbons, and soft elastics. It's neat and grows fast. I trim it myself too.
I’ve been blessed with thick naturally curly hair that likes to curl up in doll ringlets lol Yet I have no hair skills at all 😅 I like this video and the analogy you used. And how you clearly stated that there’s no judgement if one chooses to wear long one length hair. I can never communicate properly with a stylist, no amount of pictures or descriptions works…always get too much lopped off or they want to part it down the middle (which is too harsh with my face) I just let it grow and do its thing, like a hedge 😂😂😂 I trim it once a year and leave it at that. I straighten my bangs and keep them trimmed.
This video would have been more convincing if the "negative" example wasn't this stunning woman with insanely good-looking hair. Definitely going to keep that style in mind for when I reach my fifties (in 7 years)! Also, I would absolutely LOVE to look like a mushrooom! They are fascinating, beautiful organisms that can't be praised enough.
Justin, I was told that layered hair (even long layers) requires more styling and upkeep than one-length long hair. Is that true? My mom is a hairstylist and refuses to cut my hair in layers because she says that layers are maintenance and I don’t like to spend time on my hair. I’ve had long, one-length hair on and off since elementary school and am nearing the age where it will start to drag my face down. What would you recommend in this scenario? I’m not interested in the DIY front layers.
For a long time I flatly refused layering because hairdressers just can’t stop themselves from snipping way too much. It took a great deal of time and trust for me to let my hairdresser even put one layer in.
I absolutely agree with you on this Justin. I see some people in the comments are saying they don’t care what they look like to other people, and only care about convenience, and that is absolutely understandable. But, I’m so glad you make these videos to help people who want to feel better about how they look, yet don’t know how to go about it, or what to ask for at the salon. ❤
@@tracyaf6084 They probably watch this content out of sheer curiosity how on earth one can have the audacity to title a video "Long Hair After 50: NEVER Wear This Hairstyle". It's wonderful if someone wants to share their knowledge to help others, but please don't patronize adult women. It's not the 50s anymore.
@@amerubix185 yep, nothing says it’s not the 50s anymore like a bunch of older women clutching their pearls at some minor offense. It’s odd to me that the offended people don’t seem to realize they help his channel by commenting on it so they’re supporting this outrageous statement.
Get a clue. It’s not that we don’t care about our looks. It’s this belief that we need others to tell us how they think we should look. I think you are missing the point. If you are clean, neat and don’t look like a slob why is it necessary to look the way others think we should. Why does anyone watch any of the videos. They pop up and there you go. Just because many of us don’t agree with the sentiments does not mean we should not be here. If you don’t like opinions that you don’t agree with, maybe look at that.
All these naysayers act as if they are sooo strong emotionally and in every way and yet they are absurdly triggered by a professionals advice. Go figure. If it wasn’t so ridiculous it would be hilarious. My husband said “I bet most of them aren’t married “.
I have long grey hair. I know it isn't fun for hairdressers because it requires very little maintenance and is not exciting for hairdressers. Just yesterday, people stop me and want to look at it at the store. Imo Fabio was right. He does almost nothing to his hair, and it looks awesome. My advice is do not do a lot of things to the hair. Styling, heating, cutting and putting chemicals on hair trashes the hair.
I've always had long waist length hair and I can't imagine ever being without it. I refuse to have layers but I did adopt a fringe/bangs recently to soften the middle parting. Long hair without layers and a fringe is very easy to manage. I cut it all myself.
@pepper1188 No not at all. It dries naturally straight. I can clip it up out of the way...plus cut it myself. I'd say it is easier than a shorter style that needs regular cuts.
As a former hairdresser/ colorists, you make things so simple to understand! Have a horrible stenosis on my neck that prevents me from doing hair, but at63, I’m good. Thank you for these videos
I'm a self styling advocate. UA-cam is a goldmine of videos for this. Including Justin's. I haven't paid for a stylist in 10 years. I'm in my 60s and growing it from medium to long. Definitely, I include layers because morticia adams one length look isn't flattering on me. Thanks for this video!❤
I really love your taste and style always so chic. My faves would be the HIDUPZ leather backpack and the Swarovski pave diamond ring so gorg. Thank you for your recommendations.
I'm only in my 30s but I know layers are never gonna work for me and especially not when I'm over 50 and my hair gets even thinner (it's already thin). Layers are great for medium and thick hair but I feel like with really thin hair you either get a blunt cut or get a really short hairstyle, otherwise it just looks bad.
I totally hear you! It’s tough, layers done correctly on thin hair can be great! They can make it look a lot thicker! However, done incorrectly and they can be a nightmare. With front layers on thin hair, you just want to be sure to cut the ends blunt so that they look thicker. You may also consider just doing some longer, kind of curtain bang style, layers that aren’t actually blended into the front length. They can appear thicker and add a cool edge to the shape.
Try a bixie. I wore a straight bob for years and got bored. My hairdresser layered my hair all over and now it has natural waves and is very easy to style. Less flat, too. It is longer in back and shorter at the sides, framing my eyes and cheekbones and the hair doesn't get in my food when I eat!
At 73, I finally had the courage to cut my hair into a long pixie. Longer layers on top, pixie-short sides and back....really, I followed your advice, collected some of your vids and marched them to a new stylist (I had relocated, so I needed a new one). She watched it all, and cut my hair beautifully! Thank YOU, Justin, for making it so clear!!! BTW, our summer has not yet started down here, and we are having our third heatwave - so the short hair is sheer bliss....
Wow! Thank you so much for this vote of confidence! It means a lot! I’m so happy that you not only found a hairstyle you love, but you found a hairstylist that is taking great care of you! I really appreciate your support! I’m so so glad I could help in someway.
@justinhickox you probably do not realize how helpful your videos are; or how very likeable you are, or how marvelous it is to see you and your sweet wife so obviously still in love! Being a creative myself, I pick up details....I believe I speak for many who simply appreciate and admire you! Thank you for informative, helpful and insightful tips, and also for the humour - LOVE it!
I am a hairstylist and I am over 50 and I wear long hair. I was very skeptical when I clicked on this video, but this is actually really good advice. He is right on about the layering. And he’s not saying don’t wear long hair he’s just saying it right. I actually agree with everything he said.
Thank you. As you know, it's not a personal attack a long one length hair. It's simply the way that hairstyling works. I appreciate you taking the chance to watch and keeping an open mind.
I love women with long hair. If you need to make it shorter, just style it in a bun! I think women in elegant buns are very appealing. Warm, welcoming, wise, etc.
I have had too many hair stylists cut my hair in a way that makes _them_ happy, but is impossible for me to maintain because my hair simply won't behave due to the pattern in which it grows. So I walk out of the salon looking good, and within two days I look at my hair and say, "Oh, well, just let it grow out." I'll watch your video on do-it-yourself layering, see what happens.
That's why a consultation is so important. To learn what you want, your lifestyle, and how much time you want (or don't want) to commit to styling your hair. It's also important that they walk you through the styling process so you can duplicate it at home.
I 100% agree with you sir, I am a 40 yr old woman with 3 kids and I don’t like long hair anymore, short aquare bob suits me better and is more practical.
Just got my hair cut and the person convinced me to get very light layering. They did a great job, perfect technique! ...and I hate it 😅. Should've kept my one-length. To each their own.
I have straight hair, let it grow gray and long. It has kept it's thickness, very thick so don't give a flip about others opinions on long hair on 70 year olds! Nope!
That’s awesome that it’s long and thick for you! You should definitely do what feels best for you. I’m simply trying to show the potential benefits of how layers can accentuate the natural beauty of your long hair. Thanks for watching the video either way.
I'm thinking about layers just because my hair is so heavy. Trust me, throughout life I've had my hair frosted (70's) ash blonde, Carmel brown etc. Always loved changing the color and length. Upkeep is for the young and old Richie's. I did cut 14 inches off myself a few months ago. Maybe I'll check out your vids on layering. Actually have received quite a few compliments on the way my gray has and continues to come in. Tomorrow it could be short again, who knows? 😁
It is impossible to find a talented hairstylist. After trying the last 5 “senior stylists”, that each charged over $100, I am over it. At this point, I am happy to settle on doing my own trims and letting my hair grow to one length.
I can't even find a decent one at 25...last time I went in she was so rude and wasn't listening "what was the last color you had" pink "no the last color" ....I haven't had my natural hair color in over 5 years and others can learn the color wheel with hair. ..and giving dirty looks like I can't see her behind me just because I have split ends...acting like I haven't washed my hair in 20 years just cuz I got split ends...I cut my hair myself now along with dying it.
You read my thoughts... I am going to get my hair done in 2 weeks, but my hairdresser is always concerned about my layers (I am curly). So I thought to myself - what if I did my front layers on my own? I am not a professional, but I am quite skilled. I might try your technique. Thank you.
I'm 70, am a model and have Very long hair. Age is just a number. If your hair doesn't look good long, even if you're 13, don't grow it out. If you have a long, long face- don't grow it out. If it's not healthy- don't show that off by having it long. Everybody is an individual with strengths and weaknesses in their features, body shapes and other parts of them like hair textures. The trick is to show off your best points and downplay those that aren't the greatest.
One of the biggest challenges I have found, is trying to communicate what I want to a stylist. There is no established language or way to speak about hair or cuts. Im going to emphasize front layers ONLY from now on!!!!! what are the best sheers to use?
This is a concern I hear often! I always recommend finding photos of styles you like, as well as examples of things you do not like. Then taking both of those to the stylist to give them a better visual reference of what you’re wanting to achieve. As for shears, if you’re going to do your layering at home, I added a link in the description of the video that is in the Pine comment of this video. In that video I teach you how to do home layers and the shares are linked there. I hope that helps.
That was so interesting. Thank you! Hairdressers, no matter who I go to, always do the same cut on me. It’s always layered because I have a lot of hair and it’s curly. But it works. 🤷♀️ I might even try doing my own front layers one day. Thanks. Do you have any tips for when hair gets course and frizzy on top after it goes grey? Yuck. Hard to do anything with that so those claw clips or ponytails are my best friend.
Hairdressers never listen the moment you say you still want hair to be long with layers. They hack everything and leve few strands from nape of neck to shoulderblades and then say see you still have length. Never again did i go back to professional hairdressers and just do the diy butterfly cut from UA-cam tutorials
Hi Justin. Actually in the 90’s, mushroom cuts were a thing for boys haircuts. My son wore one for a while. My problem with layers is I have a naturally deep recession line and my front layers look stringy. I also hate short hairs brushing against my face.
HAHA! I remember those cuts in the 90's!!! They were a BIG thing! You're not alone with the recession lines. That can cause a bit of a hurdle. Sometimes, in those situations, I find that actually cutting the front layers like a bang (a long bang) without connecting them into the rest of the front length, can work. So basically, you section out the bang area, then cut them similar to how you would for curtain bangs (leaving them around the cheekbone length) and not actually cutting any of the rest of the front. It still gives a point of interest in the front and can accentuate cheekbones. With all that said, it WILL NOT help the concern of hair being in your face. It would actually be harder for you since they'd likely be too short to easily tuck behind your ears etc. So, an option for the look but not for the "in my face" concern.
I also comb the bangs back, away from the face, and to each side when I’m cutting. It helps avoid chunky bangs. Then I comb all the rest all the way foreward to make long layers. Sort of like a reverse blunt cut.
@@justinshelton5026 I was following until you said comb the bangs back/side but comb the rest forward for long layers. How do you grab the hair to measure it with the bangs in the way...
I have long, neon orange hair, and I will always have it until I die. I became insecure enough to change it recently, and that's never happening again. I think older women with long gray hair always look elegant and wise. At a certain point, being considered conventionally attractive by the masses becomes demeaning and unsatisfying. Looking how you feel on the inside is what helps more than anything.
You need to move to NC. We have mountains, the ocean and you and your wife would love it here. Another plus is I would have access to a master stylist.
I'm 71 and my below the shoulders, once very thick hair is now thin. I learned about not layering in the back below the occipital bone and it really makes a difference. I have had face-framing layers but I just don't like the grow-out and how it sometimes flips out, so I have long layers throughout without face-framing, although I've been leaning towards trying some longer framing layers to change things up. I usually tuck my hair behind my ears because it has thinned and even with volume products and tools (including the Voloom), I tuck because I don't like anything falling in front.
I appreciate your respectful insight!
@@justinhickox I definitely agree that the social tendency has moved towards an uninformed intense reaction rather than thoughtful responses. I also understand that there must be a balance between risking rage-baiting and having too few views. Literally no one said otherwise. In fact it's not even under discussion.
I imagine you wearing a different way and that would look fantastic too!'
Then let them make the choice.

As a result I stopped getting haircuts and now am sitting on my long, boring, unflattering hair.

Same. It’s youthful. The short gray hair is aging for sure
I'm 54 and my husband loves my long hair. It's such a pain to deal with though...lol
All other men? *All* ?

Wow, all men love your hair woohoo. You know a lot of men, lady.
Thanks for these tips, Justin. I’ve been cutting my own long hair, thanks to YT videos, since Covid. In 2 weeks, I’m getting my first professional cut in years. Your videos are so helpful to be able to communicate well with my new stylist ❤❤❤. I really appreciate you 🎉
I'm 63 and have long hair, no layers and it definitely doesn't age me :)

No matter how young you think you look, its the drying up inside n failing organs that you cant see that count
In my opinion it's one of the chiquest looks! I will def be wearing my hair just like that in say 25 years from now.

I'm confused because I have thin hair and every, I mean every stylist layered my hair and left me with NO HAIR! I'm not understanding

What an odd and controlling man
Thank you so much- I have been cutting my own med length, thin, curly hair for 30 years or so. I will use these tips.
I learned how to cut my own hair
if I'm unhappy I only have myself to blame and won't risk a felony over blaming the stylist lol
yes I'm that serious about my hair

I wish the stylists in the 1970's would have told me they don't know HOW to cut hair like Farrah's! Or kind of curly hair, period!
Anyone who goes to a hairdresser's site is possibly looking for tipps how to improve their style. That's the only thing I can see he is providing here. No shaming in any -ism way. Thank you, Justin!
I appreciate this. Thank you.
@@justinhickox ;-) mind you, the headlines together with the pictures are misleading, especially if people DON'T watch the video. So many people just get triggered so easily ;-(

totally agree. It is a great video.
It's ok Justin, I love this advice and came here specifically to find out how to get layers while avoiding the mushroom. I appreciate this info!
I’m 60 and having been growing my hair out for 2 years and I love it long w layers. So many styles I can achieve now. I get tons of complements too
I'm 50 and I'll wear my hair any damn way I please. Just because I'm a certain age I don't need to start presenting myself the way you or society tells me is "age appropriate" or matronly ffs
It was just a flipping suggestion!!!
He was just saying how it drags down the look wow you are angry at something did u not hearrrrr what he said the first 2 minutes lol smh im 54& this is embarrassing you saying this he never said anythinhggg like that !!!!!
men telling women how to look pleasing is so tone deaf and tired
He is just trying to help yall old asses sis.
Somebody needs to do a video on men of a certain age shouldn't wear tight shirts when they're fat.
I just chopped all my long hair off. Almost the same style as yours "Justin Hickox." 😅 I'm starting to grey at 38. I am going platinum white very shortly. I am not liking the process of going from red hair to grey. It's turning a darkish ashy brown.
I'll be the renegade here. For spiritual reasons I have been growing my hair out since 1995.
@@justinhickoxso why does the thumbnail say STOP THIS?
LOL@@regroovable
It says stop this because that generates more traffic and views
If you have good quality hair and take care of it well it is a treasure that can stand on its own without the need to ‘accentuate’
things in your face
This title honestly is very good. What I find interesting is that women are so easily triggered by your question. After all you put a question mark ❓ at the end. You also went back and forth with if you like it wear it. Then made suggestions on other style and why. I am sixty two and have long have. I do agree adding layers has really brought out the features of my bone structure. It has stopped the long drawn look to my hair. Thank you Justin.
I am 71 with looong hair..natural wave, champagne beigh..I am a retired hairdresser..do my hair every day...get many complements..love my hair.❤
Long natural platinum blonde hair - 55yo - gonna keep on wearing it because I rock it :)
Same here on the compliments and I am 71, not 58!
That’s because what he is recommending isn’t true. My hair is long, thick and beautiful. Stylist always want to ruin it.
people can wear whatever hair style they want!
I totally agree! Which is why I mentioned that specific point in the middle of the video. I’m simply expressing how layers can amplify the natural beauty of long hair.
And he says just that in his video if you would of watched if you would know!!
@@Peachgreen999yeah he literally waits until the middle of the video. why woule women bother to keep watching when the opening messsge is clear?
My beautiful long brown hair looks very flattering . My petite, slim frame, is clothed in form fitting, modern clothing. I pull it back into a ponytail for my almost daily gym workouts. I am in my early 70’s and my hubby loves the way I look, and so do I!
Most husbands don't want their wives to change anything at all despite the fact that they get bellies and go bald themselves. My ex-mother-in-law kept her bouffant hair from the 50s because her husband liked it, it was seriously tragic
You sound so full of yourself.
@ Feeling good about yourself is confidence and I am filled to the brim with it because I put in the work and time to be strong, fit and healthy.
This was a great video! The techniques he references is how I cut my own layers myself at home. 😊 I use the same guides.
The people complaining sound like they didn’t watch the video. He clearly says that if long one length hair suits them, then ignore what he says.

Super. Cheers ❤ ❤
Cheers.
Exactly.
I’ve been blessed with thick naturally curly hair that likes to curl up in doll ringlets lol
Yet I have no hair skills at all 😅
I like this video and the analogy you used. And how you clearly stated that there’s no judgement if one chooses to wear long one length hair.
I can never communicate properly with a stylist, no amount of pictures or descriptions works…always get too much lopped off or they want to part it down the middle (which is too harsh with my face)
I just let it grow and do its thing, like a hedge 😂😂😂
I trim it once a year and leave it at that. I straighten my bangs and keep them trimmed.
I’ll wear the big voluminous dress and the one layer hair, thank you very much.
I honestly wonder why they’re watching this video if they don’t care about their hair. I appreciate the content.
Waist length hair? Isn't that alot of work?
@pepper1188 No not at all. It dries naturally straight. I can clip it up out of the way...plus cut it myself. I'd say it is easier than a shorter style that needs regular cuts.
As a former hairdresser/ colorists, you make things so simple to understand! Have a horrible stenosis on my neck that prevents me from doing hair, but at63, I’m good. Thank you for these videos
Hey Debra! Thank you so much for the kind words and support! Sorry to hear about your stenosis. Glad to hear I can help in some small way!
@@justinhickox omg thank you 🙋🏻♀️
I'm a self styling advocate.

So I walk out of the salon looking good, and within two days I look at my hair and say, "Oh, well, just let it grow out."
I'll watch your video on do-it-yourself layering, see what happens.
That's why a consultation is so important. To learn what you want, your lifestyle, and how much time you want (or don't want) to commit to styling your hair. It's also important that they walk you through the styling process so you can duplicate it at home.
I 100% agree with you sir, I am a 40 yr old woman with 3 kids and I don’t like long hair anymore, short aquare bob suits me better and is more practical.
it really is only Justin's opinion and not an attack on us silver, long haired ladies. You do you!
When one gets older, wear your hair however you want!!!!
Just got my hair cut and the person convinced me to get very light layering. They did a great job, perfect technique! ...and I hate it 😅. Should've kept my one-length. To each their own.
😂 - oh yes, I’ve had the mushroom cut a couple of times - not red with spots though 🍄
HAHA! You're not alone! I can't count how many times I've seen that at the salon!
You really did make me laugh out loud!👍😁
Took your advice and have long layers now. Love it. More shape and helps reduce tangling.
Im 65 with long gray hair to my waist. I LOVE it!!!! I get a ton of compliments.
I think a lot of people get compliments on their HAIR, but it doesn't necessarily go with their face.
Wear it all in whatever fashion makes you feel comfortable and happy with yourself. Be you, not who you're told you should be.
@@justinhickox Thank you for responding, I have taken pics of what I do want but not what I don't lol,
That was so interesting.
@@justinshelton5026
I was following until you said comb the bangs back/side but comb the rest forward for long layers. How do you grab the hair to measure it with the bangs in the way...
@@ClarityDetermination I use the bangs as my guide. I stand in front of my client and comb the sections to the front.
I am 65 and I agree. I like layers and think that long hair without them looks hippyish. Agree front layers only and the length that minimized jowls.
Thanks some women really saw and understood the video. I am shocked about the troll entries.
HAHA! Thank you! You never know...mountains and an ocean are always a great start! :)
