Agreed, the silver tones in her grey really lit up her eye color, and brightened her complexion. It takes a lot of patience and determination to let the color grow out. I always get compliments on my grey hair.
During covid 4 years ago, I decided to go gray. I remember the shock in the mirror as it was growing out. But the reason I followed through was the expense of color upkeep, and also I was really tired of having appointments every 6 weeks for touch-ups. Now that I'm retired I love being free of demanding schedules and appointments. I've decided to look in the mirror less and enjoy life more.
Same, only my dark brown faded to that orange frizz in three weeks. Now I have pure white healthy hair and love it. I wish people would stop telling women they will look old, it depends on their cut, makeup and clothing choices and attitude.
I transitioned from medium brown to my natural gray by heavy highlights and frequent cuts. It took about a year and - I love it. I was having to touch up my roots about every 3 1/2 weeks and I don’t miss that at all. I keep it in a short to medium length bob and I have received compliments from random strangers! Not once when I was coloring the gray did that ever happen. I agree that you have to be ready. I waited until I retired because I knew in my particular work environment I would be seen as old and not relevant and I didn’t feel like facing that character assassination. It was a hostile working environment. But if you’re ready, just do it and I can guarantee you’ll love it.
We all know the pros and cons of going gray, but one thing I'd like to point out to all the ladies who are thinking about it, and something I've discovered by pure chance when my hair fully grew into its natural shades of gray, is that you will look softer and in turn younger, yes, you heard right. All those lines and wrinkles will diffuse and blur. Nature has its own way of giving and taking. Best of luck on your journey whatever you decide.
Omg, for sure! Mother Nature has the best color in store for you and even in the toughness of the transition, if thats how you choose to view it. There came a time for me (50), that my dark hair just looked fake and harsh on me and there was no escaping it. Yes you have to shift things to suit you in makeup and clothing but its fun. A massive internal transformation also takes place and its just as beautiful if not more.
Thank you so much Justin, Dionna, Danielle! This was such an exciting day! I wasn't sure what the end product would look like walking into this makeover but I knew I was in the BEST hands. The cut and color are amazing and the makeup was perfect! I haven't looked back on my decision once! Not to mention what awesome humans you are! I instantly felt at ease after meeting you all!
I think you looked great either way- but, as I posted in my comment above, I went through the exact same dilemma as you a year ago and came to the same conclusion. I ended up coloring my hair and I'm honestly not ready to grow out my grey, yet. Some day, but not now. Good luck!
You look beautiful - the colour really suits you. I just got to the 5 month stage and realised I wasn’t feeling so good about myself and I wasn’t ready to be a woman with grey hair. I think I envisioned it would have a different texture. So I just dyed it again last week and I feel great. Maybe later I’ll give another go but for now this my decision. I’ve had long hair always and tomorrow I’m going to have it cut into a medium shag cut and I’m excited about it. 🎉
Curious as it’s been 4 months now, do you regret going dark and dealing with the grey grow out. I know for me color fades after 2 weeks by week 3 I have grey hair again…I’m only 54 but the maintenance is exhausting. Not to mention expensive!
Throwing no shade…but…she’s gonna love it for a few months and then when she gets the reminder of the constant half inch of silver grow out 7-ten days after dyeing it, well, then she’s going to remember why she was going grey. I know. I’ve lived it. Fully completed transitioning to natural hair color twice. I’m not 100% happy with it, but I was also not happy with constantly chasing that grow out skunk stripe. And the dye doesn’t stick to the greys as well either, so you end up with inconsistent color. I think aging is really challenging and THAT is what we are really struggling with, because it’s hard not recognizing yourself in the mirror anymore.
Very well said but everyone (mostly) gets there at their own pace. You do have to be ready or have to work on loving the grey hair and all the other things that come with the ageing process
Yes that is indeed the struggle and you are not alone. What I have found that helps is too make sure that I continue to put some effort into looking the best I can as I notice I feel better on those days. Have a lovely day
I started going grey at 16 and colored my hair, every month, for decades. In my early 40's I decided I'd had enough and started to let it go. After a few inches had grown out, I went to the salon and the stylist had the brilliant idea of putting in some high and lowlights through my hair that would just soften the look of the transition. It worked great and by the time that had grown out, I didn't need to get it done again. That was a decade ago and, I can honestly say, I've never had more compliments on my hair as I have had since going grey. 💜
Agree. Her gray all grown out would have been banging but the old color was just wrong for her and the frizz was dominating the space. The new color is so much better than the d color. I’d like to see this done on someone who is going to stay the same color.
I’ve been covering my grey for over 30 years and am done trying to chase it away. And although I have always been conscientious of my upkeep, I am really tired of trying to continually look younger than I am. I am in great shape, I workout, take great care of my skin, wear makeup very well and am super fashion conscientious. It’s a lotta work and something’s gotta give! So just because I decide to rock my natural hair color, does not mean I am letting myself go.
I went gray at age 64 and I never looked back! After 2 years I love how I look. It’s “salt&pepper” and I get a lot of compliments. You don’t know how you will like or if you’d look good with gray until you do it and you have to be ready and willing to try!
I am SO happy she made that choice!!!!…I grew my hair out to grey for 3 and a half years…I faked it making myself think I Loved it!…once I colored it again, changed my entire attitude of myself!!!..,I could see that on her face once her hair was colored!., gorgeous woman and I absolutely love the color, cut and makeup!. ..kudos to Danielle and to the power couple of UA-cam!!!…you can see how genuine you three are to make someone feel good about themselves. . This was a super video!!!!…you three nailed it!.,and your model is naturally gorgeous!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜
Yes, the consultant looked so confident and sofisticated that if I had been me the one hesitating on that chair, just by seeing her gorgeous hair would have been enough to go for silver hair! 😊
I thought she looked stunning with the gray! Her complexion and her eye color really sparkled. But her reaction to the dark hair? She made the right choice because it made her happy! I was a bottled redhead for over 20 years when I decided to grow out my natural color. I have beautiful silver streaks in my hair and I love it! Do what makes YOU happy. 😊
I am 62 and went gray at least ten years ago. I STILL shock myself in the mirror sometimes, but the freedom from coloring my hair and chasing the roots is totally worth it.
A year ago, I was in the same position as the lady in the interview, but with a little more naturally grown out. This is a very individual decision. For me, I chose the natural grey. I was worried I wouldn't be able get my hair healthy again after dying it for years and instead opted for a low maintenance and flattering cut. That really helped. My hair is much healthier now and I don't feel like it makes me look older, only more myself.
I thought she looked softer with her grown out grey hair. Sad how we gravitate towards men (silver Fox-distinguish) yet we judge ourselves more harshly. I personally love seeing women owning their wisdom and maturity. ❤
I agree. I feel more confident because of the fact that I embraced my silver hair. I love it! I see many older women with dark dyed hair but an old face and it looks mismatched. To each their own I guess.
The dark was a little too dark, but it did look better. Some people don't look that great in gray hair, gray clothing, or silver jewelry. Like me! My skin has gold undertones and my eyes are olive/hazel. Gray clashes. Whereas my husband has stormy blue eyes, and gray looks AMAZING on him, better than the light brown he had when he was young. Tried growing my gray out but it clashed with my golden/olive tones. Went back to medium blonde (my natural color before gray) and look much healthier.
Have to disagree! I love love love her new hair color! Very rare a woman can pull off the gray without looking much older. Though the lady in the video absolutely rocks her gray hair. All the people in the video have such beautiful hearts for sure!
@@ClaudialupperocdI think her gray was fabulous and would have loved it grown out fully. I understand that achieving a “youthful” look requires styling for people to pull off, but it is so striking when you get it right.
The gray with its natural white highlights was amazing, so sophisticated. The darker color appears very flat. But this was a great presentation...if I ever get gray I will let it remain!
@@HoldMyLatte-x6tMy Mom is 81 and she still has about 20% of her dark brown hair. I think her hair stylist told her at least 20 years ago that she’d never be completely white. (As a side note, her mother was completely white.) So maybe your darker hairs will hold out?
I mean, if you've always had dark hair then suddenly seeing yourself with light hair (be it gray or blond or whatever) is going to be a little shocking at first. Same if you go from long to short. It doesn't mean you won't love it once you're used to it. I think her new color looks much better than the warm color she had but think gray would have been even more beautiful. Whatever feels best to her is the right choice but when she does finally decide to go gray, I'm betting she won't regret it. It's going to really bring out her pretty eyes even more.
@@melisa6355 Yes as a hairstylist I fond the blue eyes and green eyed people look great with grey hair. I tried it, but I have brown eyes, my hair is fine and color gives me some body and shine. I am getting really resistant ..Grey's not wanting to cover so one day I will give in. If I knew it would look the way this lady's would have looked ,but in this business you better read the personal well like Justin did. Hair is people's crowning glory. 👑
You are spot on. I’m around 150 days and my hair looks very similar. I left my hairdresser as she wasn’t supporting my journey. Tried another once who also dyed over my hair. So I’m badly in need of a cut but holding out… I must admit I often glimpse myself in the mirror and think dang that’s old, but then I also think my views are coloured (pun intended) by years of ingrained societal mores and that I can get used to it. We’ll see. I’m hoping I don’t go through this pain for 1.5 years only to dye it!
In two weeks those white roots are gonna come in and look so much worse because the colour is so dark. If you’re dyeing at home, older arms get tireder faster and ache for longer. This is WHY we go grey. With me I needed a root touch up by the end of the week because there was so much white in it. Hair stylists don’t consider tomorrow enough they’re just concerned with now. When she decides to go grey she has nothing to worry about because her grey distribution was beautiful and perfect.
I agree with you I think the grays and silver that was coming in suited her, especially her eyes or at least would’ve gone a lighter tone not that dark. Honey blonde, Ash or strawberry blonde would’ve been very nice and you don’t have to worry about the roots showing, it kind of blends in. You could get away with letting it go past six weeks. Otherwise the color is very nice.
Totally agree... that dark color will emphasize the grey hair coming in even more than before. This is going to be constant maintenance for her. She chickened out about going grey unfortunately.
It’s been two years since I transitioned to grey. I played with grey wigs for about two years before I decided I could go forward. It’s been the most freeing journey I’ve been on. I was so surprised at how beautiful my natural color is and how really “ME” it is.
I got so emotional in the reveal. Actual tears. I was Team no gray because she is so youthful. I've been ribbed a bit from a few close to me that I still restore my natural red hair (I'm 68), especially since they've chosen to go gray, but I say I don't know how to be any other color. And I have the assurance from my daughter that she'll pull me aside and tell me when my hair color looks like 'too much'... Trust your gut... the way you did in the consultation ... the results are amazing!
Personal choice, of course, and she looks great with her new color. Makes her smile! That said, the right cut will typically look great with any color. People couldn’t handle that I was choosing to go gray, but my scalp was breaking out from dye. That said, even strangers now complement me on my grown out salt and sandy gray. It’s in the styling.
That happened to my mother in law, but she was blessed with beautiful WHITE hair - never gray, just straight white. If my hair went straight up white like that, I definitely would not color it. Since my gray looked so awful on me and was just patchy in the front (back and sides had no gray), I started coloring again.
She looks stunning ! Good for her. I went gray in 2020 when it was easy to hide because of Covid. It was the best decision for me. I love my salt and pepper hair. But I too would appreciate a couple of hairstyle selections for gray hair ❤
@@DomesticDivaXO is that the retail one. I am a hairstylist . I use Scharscopt color but recently saw the keratin at a retail store. I actually picked one up. Can you tell me what’s different about it…what you like about it? Thanks
So glad I went gray. It’s actually very light…silver, and a lot of hair. I wear it long now, and get compliments on it almost every time I am out and about. Best decision for me.
I was coloring my hair every three weeks to hide the grey. Four years ago I decided to grow it out. It was a very painful experience but I persevered. Now my hair is completely white, it’s actually a very pretty color but it took me a very long time to feel like myself when I looked in the mirror. I love it white now though. Dawn
She looks good with the darker hair. Grey would look good on her as well. Getting lowlights every six months or so has worked really well for me and my grey hair. It’s not a every six week commitment and has made me happy with the silver I do have. Great video.
I am 53 and transitioned to full gray 2 years ago. I get so many compliments from older and younger people than I ever imagined. I am half Indian so I had dark brunette hair. I had a colorist lighten my hair over 6 months to lighter blond over 4 sessions so when the gray came in it wasn't a harsh demarcation line. My colorist did amazing high and low lights over each session so that my color lightened more each session to a lighter paler blond. Then the grow out was almost unnoticeable. Best decision ever to spend money to transition to full gray in 1.5 years. Now I love my gorgeous gray and see the real me in the mirror. Last time I was at the salon just getting a cut I had 1 woman in her 50s say "I really want to go gray seeing your hair" and two 20-somethings say they loved my natural color and they aspire to be ready for it like me someday. Women of a certain age - go for it. It's freeing to let go of what society thinks we should look like 🎉
She is beautiful. She mentioned not liking the warmer part of her hair. I wonder if maybe she would've liked her grey coming in a little more if just the parts of her hair that were brassy and warm were colored or toned to a cool shade to be more copacetic with the cool silver growing in. And then do a little blending to blur the demarcation line. I think I would have tried something like that to see if I liked it before coloring the whole thing. Of course, that's just my two cents and I am glad she is happy with the results for her.
I let me very grow out during Covid in early 2020. Took a full 2 years as my hair was shoulder length. Kept cutting it up to eventually a chin length bob when it was finally all grown out. I love it but I’m not sure everyone else does. I see people I haven’t seen in a few years and they say nothing which makes me feel like it doesn’t look good. Clearly I’m thinking too much about this. Bottom line is I think it looks good so that is really all that matters.
I did the same during the first lock down and I love my natural god given highlights. I think as we get older our skin complexion changes and the darker hair that we had when younger, (I was a brunette), doesn't really suit us when we are older. I think Elizabeth's dyed hair was a couple of shades too dark for her complexion and to me it didn't really match but made it look like she was trying to look younger instead of embracing her age and growing older gracefully. She's just not ready yet, but when she does she will look amazing.
This video resonated with me more than any I’ve seen. I’ve been in Elizabeth’s shoes for years. I texted my stylist just yesterday, asking if at my next appointment we can go short (based on another of your videos). I’m thinking it will be easier to grow out the gray from a short haircut. She is dead set opposed to my growing out the gray so I’ve always gone back to color. This video makes me want to stick with my desire to transition to gray. We can always go back to color (again). I love Danielle’s hair! And I think I would have liked Elizabeth in her beautiful natural gray more than in the color she chose.
I had the same with my stylist. I wanted to go grey and she was kind of against it. Then Covid and lockdown happened and I just went for it. By the time I went back to have a proper haircut and my stylist could see my beautiful silver/white 3 dimensional highlights, she loved it.😊
My stylist was great. She kept me informed as to how much grey was growing in. About a year before Covid, (at my request), she began letting my silver show (colouring only some sections.) Then Covid came. My first cut after lockdown ended, I went from a overgrown bob style to a pixie cut, and no more colouring was needed. Absolutely love my silver hair and it actually enhances my face's skin tone. But I understand it's not for everyone, especially those that have dull grey hair. Also, growing out grey hair when your hair is long would be much more difficult.
I ❤it. And I totally understand. I’m 73. Hairdresser loved my gray. It made me feel really old & didn’t reflect who I am on the inside. I colored it and am glad I did.
Thank you, Justin! Grey is not the best option for some of us. We don’t have the matching skin color or that beautifully silver mane which some mature models rock! I am so glad you are willing to pass this information without judgement or expectations.
that is so true, my mum looked awful with slate grey hair and I always encouraged her to die it, then it turned white and it suits her so much better! now she's a beautiful white headed lady. it brings out her blue eyes and pink toned skin, but with the darker grey she just looked blah.
Exactly! I tried the whole embrace your gray thing after retiring, but it clashed with my light olive skin and nothing looked right about me. My husband said I looked jaundiced. So. Back to medium blonde to cover roots. Best of all I can wear red and orange again, my best colors.
@@Claudialupperocd I on the other hand am very pale and light colored or grey clothes make me look washed out. And so would salt and pepper. I could never go blonde or grey. But boy the upkeep of roots drives me nuts.
I also think the darker color looks harsh for her. I can't help but think they could have come up with a more pleasant shade if she wanted to stay closer to her original (?) dark color. God knows the colors/shades are out there for the professionals to work with. Tons of videos here on you tube demonstrate that. But evidently, she's apparently happy with what she ended up with.
I gave up coloring my hair about three years ago. It was a losing battle keeping up with the roots, and the monotone color was not flattering. I still have a few inches of color left at the ends, but as my husband trims my hair every couple months or so, I figure it will be all gone by next spring. No regrets going silver, and I am never going back to being a slave to hair color.
I stopped coloring my hair in 2019. My hair is so much healthier. I agree -- it does make you look older. But I think it actually works better with my skin tone. It's not fighting the natural way my skin -- my face -- is aging (eek) but true. I don't love it but I do like it more than keeping it dyed. Keeping it gray is the right choice for me. Right now.
She looks great! I have a short pixie and it was pretty easy to grow out with temporary colors. I no longer have any color. Now it is a matter of finding the perfect cut.
This color is waaay too dark for her. They could have taken her dyed hair down a level and highlighted it. This color is also waaay to warn for her skin.
I decided to let my natural hair color be 18 months ago & am very pleased. My hair is incredibly soft and shiny. No more broken ends jutting out of the top of my head. It’s a lovely color that has dimension & seems like the color your guest would have had. As we get older darker hair color look harsh. We have to adjust our make up to deal with the contrast because our skin becomes more delicate. I am still learning about the change in color for clothing etc but it’s actually fun. Lots of discoveries. If anyone is considering letting their hair be its natural color, I hope this is helpful!
I had a wonderful hair dresser when I lived in So. California. In 2012 I decided to let my grey grow out. She thought it was a mistake and would make we look older. The day she cut off the last of my color, she said “I was wrong. Your hair looks great!” I get so many compliments on my grey hair and I love it!!
Thank you for such a personal, honest video! I’ve been greying since my mid-twenties. After coloring my hair for over 20y - and like Elizabeth, going back & forth about not coloring - I finally quite coloring in Nov ‘22. I “cheated” and had my hairdresser bleach some old color and blend my white/greys in, but I still had growing-out to power through. I made and am thrilled! It’s still weird seeing a lady in the mirror with stark-white hair versus the dark auburn I used to have, but it feels like me. I love the questions posed, and if I ever answer them differently, I’ll feel confident going back to color. 🥰
I grew in my silver for the second time during covid and was so glad I did! It's really liberating to not think about getting my roots done every 3 weeks. Plus I've had every color ever. For me it wasn't overwhelming to grow in. Plus guys don't ask the question if the grey hair will wear you or the other way around. I wish more women felt empowered to grow in their natural color but at the end of the day you have to have fun with your hair and enjoy whatever color you want.
I’m 6 months in to “Ditching the Dye”…I started out using the dye strip method, then just stopped doing it too. I was SOOOO tired of coloring every 2-3 weeks! I have dark hair past my shoulders and it is at that very difficult stage right now, but I’m definitely sticking with it, no regrets! You have to get past the stage of thinking everyone is staring at you…they really aren’t. In the end, do whatever makes YOU happy! As for me… I cannot wait for the total grow out and have a beautiful head full of silver hair!!
Really enjoyed this! I'm 71 and for me, grey is not in my closet and it's only in my hair until I get the roots done. It's simply not a color I'm drawn to and I think I would feel instantly older so no decision to be made for me. I'm keeping the color but I probably need to update the style.
She looks stunning with the new hair colour! I decided to let my hair go grey during the Covid time and Salt and Pepper looked really good but now that it's starting to turn white - that's not me. I can empathise so well with how she feels when she looks in the mirror. So many friends who went grey during the Covid period are now dyeing their hair again and look better with it. And it's not about suddenly looking young again, it's about how I feel inside.
I tried everything. Whatworks best for me is applying color as low lights so some grey is mixed in and most importantly, there is NOT A STRAIGHT LINE OF REGROWTH. Adding low lights also allows me to add highlights in summer and more saturated color in winter. Supports a nice varigated mix
@@jolismom1421 Only in a salon. Only to get even distribution is to be able to see and pick small bits of the hair color growing at the root. My stylist can also compensate for patches of growth that tends toward more salt or more pepper. My greys are growing in more of a dalmatian pattern.
Another great option when transitioning to natural grey is using semi-permanent color ! Yes it does fade , but it fades back to your natural grey . If you do permanent color you will have to do your roots every 4 - 6 weeks anyway and the ends oxidize and need a retouch or tone too. Well that is about as long as semi-permanent color will last anyway. Plus the semi-perm does not damage the hair or scalp , instead it adds body and shine. That's what I am doing right now but going a different direction than your client. My natural color is a rather ashy border line level 6 - 7 light brown to dark blonde on top I am completely silver on the sides and back. I like the silver and wish it would all turn already but not willing to bleach the top, so I use a diluted semi-perm "titanium" grey on top that looks IMO great on me. I have even done sapphire blue before and liked that but realize "wild" colors are not for everyone lol
I grew my grey out. Than started cutting it a little at a time. It's all natural now and I'm rocking a long pixie that I never would have tried as a blonde!! I feel sassy and confident now instead of a lazy ponytail or bun. This lady made the right decision for her at this point in her life. She looks great!
Decided to go grey/white and had my stylist help me. He stripped out my color and it was blonde with the white blended throughout. Shock was an understatement, but glad I did it. Now stylist is retired and I need some shaping as I want to grow it out long. The client looks good and glad she is happy.
I have struggled with deciding to go grey for well over two years. I had kind of a dark warm blond for most of my life. I didn't feel grey but I wanted to stop all the coloring. My roots were such a contrast that I felt the grey showed in 4 weeks making me color my hair so often. I didn't have the time, money or energy for all that coloring. I just didn't feel grey. I watched so many UA-cam videos to try to help with the transition to no avail. I would grow an inch and dye my hair again. I finally found MY solution!!! I changed to a much lighter, less brassy blond. I am now a light neutral blond. The shade blends with my grey. I colored hair myself and missed a few strands. As it fades it gets closer to my almost naturally white hair and blends well. I don't have to mess much with the growth as it comes in. I can go well over 2 months without coloring. A great compromise and I love being almost grey.
It took me almost 6 years of catching myself in the mirror and being comfortable. I wear my hair grey with confidence now, but it took some time to get there! I had to change my wardrobe and makeup, that helped!
I transitioned to gray in 2013 at 47 years old. It was the best decision I ever made. My hubs says I look YOUNGER with my silver hair. People swear I am highlighting it, but it’s just the gray pattern I have. So many women I know over the past eleven years who have seen my hair, have grown theirs out, too. It emboldened them to make the transition and they love it. Only one decided to go back to dyeing hers. I 100% agree it has to be the right time and you have to be fully ready for it. You know when you are. I fully support any woman’s choice (in many more ways than one) and it is HER decision. No judgement ever. You have to love yourself and if dyeing your hair makes you feel more like “you”, then keep rockin’ it! Just love you!
The gray hair looks amazing with her skin tone. I was like her and grew mine out but like any hair color there are some that work and others don’t. My skin tome just doesn’t work with the shade of gray that naturally comes out of my head. It just washed me out. I colored it and immediately regretted it. It was my natural color but it was just too dark…harsh. So now its back to the grow out and I just put in a color depositing conditioner to blend the gray so its an easier transition.
I stopped coloring my hair 2 1/2 years ago and I still shock myself when I see it in pictures or the mirror at times. I think that is totally natural, it’s a big change. I’m 54 and for 51+ years my hair was not grey so… we have to realize it takes some getting used to. For me I don’t 100% love the grey but I don’t hate it enough to go through the ugly growing out process or coloring every 5 weeks again. It’s not worth it for me.
I went no dye at 45, now 65. LOVE IT! However, I am still working full time and have keratin treatments so my hair behaves without additional products in. Shoulder skimming bob .. compliments galore!
The color made her look so much younger. It doesn't look harsh. I'm not a fan of the salt and pepper look on myself. I know once I start going grey, it will only be along my temples and hairline. I would love to see more videos like this.
I absolutely agree that only you should make the decision. I've never colored my hair and it's naturally silver. IMHO that the color she chose is too dark, a lighter, blended color would've been more flattering and no obvious roots.
This is soooooo me at the moment!! I have about 2" of grey and I'm on the fence whether to keep going or cave in and dye it again. I would love to see what you would have done IF she decided to go grey.
Wow. What a great change. And the timing is perfect for me. I've been looking at hair colors online for the past week after deciding I wasn't ready to go gray yet, but am tired of hanging onto the blonde that no longer suits my skin tone. Couldn't understand why I'm finding cooler colors so attractive but now I think I get it. Very happy with this video. Thanks for another good lesson.
So.... I just coloured by hair back to brown after exactly 2 years grow out , which was complete with my chin bob. I had new clients who assumed I was older, which had only started since being the salt & pepper. I feel both happy and sad about being stuck in the dye cycle again - but I look my age again now - which is a better feeling for me at 42
Thank you Justin for being positive about going grey, and acknowledging struggle. I had to go grey at age 43 due to allergy, even from the more natural dyes. I am 5'10" and have always had long hair. Growing it out was a long process. I was in an online group for "going grey" and it helped so much with the highs and low's. Now, 12 years into having it, my natural hair actually has been one of the best things that I have done. It has changed, actually has become a lot darker, (hair roots healing? IDK) now I am probably 50/50 black and grey. I always had compliments on my dark auburn hair while growing up, but now I have people stopping me to compliment me on my hair! I can't tell you how many MEN stop me and tell me how beautiful my hair is, and how they wish their wives would go to their natural hair color. Women think that men won't like it, and I think they are totally wrong from my experience. In this online group one thing they used to tell us is you will not truly know what it will look like until you get the very last piece of old dyed hair off. So true! For most women, if they absolutely hate it, they can always go back to the dye! I have only heard one woman do that, but she also likes the pastel colors. My hair stylist tells me all the time how lucky I am to have done this because no matter how good the colorist is, they will never be able to duplicate my high's and low lights like mine. One thing about going grey is it is very unique to each and every woman. My hair is thicker, healthier and shinier than any hair dye that I could use.
I really like the color and I'm glad you didn't choose gray in the end. BUT! I think this brown is a bit dark. It could be a little lighter, just a few shades, I would like it better, it would be even fresher. Anyway, she's a beautiful woman!
Thanks so much for covering this topic. I stopped coloring my dark brown hair in November 2022. The grow out really sucked. I tried transitioning with color but I ended up cutting my hair short after 6 months to get rid of all the different colors. It was absolutely worth it. I love my gray hair now.
Personally I think she'd look amazing with grey hair but Justin was right, she's not ready for it yet and you have to be ready and confident enough to go through the transition process which takes 2 years +. I'd been dying my hair for 30 years and during the first lockdown I decided to stop and let my natural greys grow through as I was having to dye my hair every 3 weeks and I was sick of putting chemicals on my hair so often and the thought of doing that for the next 20 years of my life was what convinced me to stop. I love my silver/white natural highlights which would cost me an absolute fortune if I was to have them done professionally. Not all of us are married to a top stylist like Justin ya know. 😂 Despite being one of the youngest of my friends, I'm the first one to embrace my natural hair and when I was transitioning my friends thought i was mad and they didn’t like it at all, but when I had the last bit of horrible orangey brown cut off and was fully transitioned, most of them changed their minds and admitted it looked good. That's where the confidence has to be there, you have to really want to do it and be determined because otherwise other peoples opinions will make you doubt your decision and will undermine your confidence. Do i regeret it? No way. I love the freedom of not being a slave to the bottle every few weeks.
I’m white/grey now and wish I’d been able to try on some wigs in white/grey in different hairstyles, at my hairdresser’s, so that it would have eased my mind as to whether it would suit me. I got really fed up with the constant white roots. Now I concentrate on styling and having healthy, shiny white/grey hair. I love it!
She wasn’t ready and she made the right decision. My mom will be 90 and she still isn’t ready. It’s everyone’s personal decision. Thanks for sharing your story.
You definitely have to be ready for it. It took me a year. I transitioned with cool low light and heavy silver highlights on top to blend in the natural gray regrowth and soften and blend that hard line of demarcation. It was a game changer! I kept growing it out, but cutting the length every 4-6 weeks until my natural regrowth was down to my chin. I had the rest of the color cut off into a beautiful A line bob. I love my natural gray and won’t look back. I wish now I would have done it sooner. I’m sad to see she went back to color. Her gray hair was just stunning. Now she will have to start all over again.
I am taking chemo for breast cancer and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma so I’ll lose my really pretty hair shortly. I bought a great looking wig so that’s good. I plan on going gray ( actually under the dye it’s a pretty silver white) when my hair grows back. I have read some research that hair dye can cause cancer. So I’m no longer using dyes or having my nails done . ( they look great without a mani.)
Wow, this lady could have been me! I went through the SAME thing last year: I was growing it out for the same reasons and had the exact same doubts. In the end, as much as I LOVE grey hair on most other people, like her, I came to the conclusion that I just wasn't ready, yet. I regularly color my hair the same color that she selected in the end and so, that's what I did, as well. I'll continue being a brunette for the time being.
I am 56 and have never colored my hair. It is starting to really show the grey. I can't wait for it to be all grey, just think it will be a long time from now. I understand why growing out the grey would be more difficult on one's mental state. She looks beautiful
Love it! I actually grew out my very short hair several years ago, and I do love it, but every now and again I can’t help wondering if it doesn’t make me look older. I’m 67, which is weird to say because I certainly don’t feel my age!
Linda I turned 58 on July 26 and I don’t feel 58 and I apparently look 58 to some probably because I’ve literally in the past 6 months went through the worst phases of menopause!!! Hair loss being the biggieeeee. So I decided no cutting it no dying it and then I used the Henna color which worked but because I did it myself I don’t think I got the great look. So, I am doing nothing for now on my hair because I started taking oral Minoxidil which I have to take for life which is fine with me as long as I don’t lose any more hair and I look crazy color wise because like some of the other comments my gray is only around my crown and not on either side so growing the beautiful gray out is not really an option unless I wait another 10 years for it to look naturally gray + I am more Olive skin toned so nope the gray won’t look good ever I think. So love your hair Linda it’s only meant for YOU to be happy with it!!!
@@Michael-k4g mine was completely grey and very short so I didn’t have much of a transition. I got tired of spending $100+ per month on color and a cut for my 1 inch long hair so I took matters into my own hands! Stopped coloring and bought some clippers. I hope the minoxidil works well for you, because if our hair isn’t right nothing else seems right either!😁
@@lindacurtis7267 Thank You Linda - and you are so so so right!!!! I’m excited to tell you that the Minoxidil IS WORKING and so is Prempro!!! I saw a Marie Claire You Tube Gyno who swears by HRT and I can’t agree with her more!!! And your lucky to only spend $100+ I was spending $250 + tips every 5 weeks!!!
I was in this same situation with the warm color and gray roots. I had a new cut and transitioned with grey and brownish color. It looks amazing. Best decision
I have gone salt and pepper and it has been VERY hard to embrace my natural colour. I am finally growing to like it but I wish I could love it ! It just doesnt feel like me and so I relate to this lady but I feel I will gradually grow into it and wont be going back to ddye .
I went grey and it was much easier for me as I wear a pixie cut. It didn’t take long at all to let it grow out with regular trims. When it grew out, I found it was more silver and white than I thought it would be. Very little of the dirty blonde was left - mostly in the back crown. I did it after I retired. Now I just tone it and rock the look. It is a decision you make and you have to be okay with it. I think it suits me just fine and I’ve played with temp colors like purple and blue with it. Not all women are ready to do it, and some never want to. It’s a choice you have to be comfortable with I agree. You did great digging down into what she really wanted.
Thank you for this video. I love the silver content on your channel as it's a big issue for women. Tips for looking great with salt and pepper hair would be awesome. Your opinion is much needed on this topic!
I went grey at 50 after menopause. I had naturally curly hair but it was fried and yellow after years of harsh chemicals. I hated my natural colour when it was next to the dyed hair but over time my natural hair began to shine through. I am now 2 years on and my hair is a beautiful natural pearl blonde thick and healthy and curly again! You can’t make a judgement on a few inches you have to see your natural hair in full but work on a good cut and getting the condition back and you will never look back. ❤ xx
That's beautiful how you worked with her. That was so exciting! I tried grey and.... um... no. My skin tone did not go well with it and once I did it, I realized I was not ready.
She looks great with the color, glad she’s happy with it. I went back and forth with mine over a couple of years, and decided to try going full gray 6 months before covid hit. It was perfect timing for a transition because pretty much no one saw me when it really was noticeable (except my poor husband), and by the time we were all out and about again, my hair had grown out so much that once cut, I was pretty much all silver salt and pepper. A good cut gives it texture and movement and while it’s not long, not super short…I don’t feel old ladyish. I did shock myself a few times when passing a mirror but I didn’t feel bad when I did, just different. At 64, a change can be refreshing, lol. I don’t miss the time and money spent on the coloring at all, and my hair feels healthier (it is thick, so I’m lucky in that respect). During Covid, when I did go to the store or some other necessary place, I very often had other women grey or not come up to me and tell me they could see I was growing it out and that they admired my courage, which helped too. My outlook was that if I didn’t like it, I could always go back to color in a matter of hours! The makeup (don’t forget the eyebrows!) and even clothes colors did take some tweaking.
Need a video on how to make your natural hair color look beautiful. There are so many women that are embracing their grays these days but aren't sure exactly how to tame the frizz, use purple shampoo, use round brush blowdryers and other syling tools. And, what makeup compliments gray hair. It's such a learning curve!!! Fortunately, there are several FB pages that one can follow that help the painful process of transitioning be more exciting!!!
I think when you go grey you do need to have a good modern haircut to keep it looking good or you can risk looking like an 'old lady' or worse still a bit witchy if you just let it grow but don't really have a "style". Thankfully there are so many modern/funky styles around these days. 😊
That's my mom!!! Thank you all so much for treating her so well and making her look and feel like her best self. You all are amazing.
She is lovely 🏵

I agree, I think she would look so sophisticated with the gray.
Agreed, the silver tones in her grey really lit up her eye color, and brightened her complexion. It takes a lot of patience and determination to let the color grow out. I always get compliments on my grey hair.
Rejuveneceu uns 10 anos ficou linda❤❤❤❤
@@dianeschebetta1656 My opinion is the new colour is too dark for her face.
Same. Silver since 2017
With Loreal 10.13 20 minutes every 6 to 8 weeks is a wonderful and quick blonde, just if you want to try.
Same, only my dark brown faded to that orange frizz in three weeks. Now I have pure white healthy hair and love it. I wish people would stop telling women they will look old, it depends on their cut, makeup and clothing choices and attitude.
I did the same & never looked back!
You look great with your new color!
@@rosemarie9956 I struggle. I am happy that I have days where I feel comfortable in my aging self, but I wish the contentment was every day.
Yes that is indeed the struggle and you are not alone. What I have found that helps is too make sure that I continue to put some effort into looking the best I can as I notice I feel better on those days. Have a lovely day
Truth
She will be able to do root touch-ups with just going in to get root color. Everyone gets to that acceptance of gray at their own timing.
Her natural gray looked beautiful and unique. Her eyes looked amazing. I think she would have loved it fully grown out with that same haircut.
Letting it go grey or white actually makes skin look more youthful
Yes maam!
So who's the lady in your profile picture with the blondey brown hair then?

Me too.
I agree. The gray was much more interesting, meaning different shades, and the dark color looks flat and uninteresting.
Totally agree with you. I think she'd look awesome with grey hair, but Justin was right, she's just not ready for it yet.
@@melisa6355 Yes as a hairstylist I fond the blue eyes and green eyed people look great with grey hair. I tried it, but I have brown eyes, my hair is fine and color gives me some body and shine. If I knew it would look the way this lady's would have looked ,but in this business you better read the personal well like Justin did. Hair is people's crowning glory. 👑
Yup. I thought she looked stunning with the gray, but she's got to be ready
100% AGREE WITH YOU!! Love Justin's work, but it seems he always encourages the hair color.
@@karenrader2160Keeps him in business
Give your hair some root volume and you won’t see the root for 6 weeks. Dyeing is a workout. Use it or lose it.
When I went grey I felt liberated
Yay! She colored it! I'm 54 and have very gray roots. I don't think I'll ever be ready to go all gray. I love Schwarzkopf Keratin hair dye.

I grew out my grey and have no regrets. When I had enough grey, I cut it short to get rid of all the artificial color. I love the easy upkeep.
Great video.
his so is a hairdresser so no cost for her
This lady is beautiful no matter what ! When she does decide to go grey, she will be stunning with her beautiful natural color hair too!
Yes, on her a light brown with ash lowlights would have been softening. It's what I was expecting.
To heck with others, they are only reflecting to you what they feel about themselves on their insides.
You’re right! Thank you!
But she still looks great!
I love the dark on her, really brightens her complexion. Great detective work Justin!!!
Wow, she is such a beautiful complexion to go gray. I think that would’ve looked so much better on her than that dark hair color that she chose.
I totally agree! The gray would have looked so great with her green eyes! I don't like the brown at all, but after all it's her hair, not mine. 🙂
I grew my silver out in 2019. Best thing I’ve done for myself! I love my hair!
Nice! This explored gray and not gray as equally valid decisions, really leaving it up to the person. Love that.
Never go monotone, always get hilights.
Right now.
THAT is a very honest comment - thank you for that so much!
It does not make anyone look older if they keep a healthy countenance with good skin and make up and dress to suit their colouring.
She looks great! I have a short pixie and it was pretty easy to grow out with temporary colors. I no longer have any color. Now it is a matter of finding the perfect cut.
the grey looked better on her, imo.
I don't agree, dark suits her so well!
But she still looks great!
Agree
This color is waaay too dark for her. They could have taken her dyed hair down a level and highlighted it. This color is also waaay to warn for her skin.
Highlights are more damaging too
Somethings wrong with the audio/sound.
Thank yo for the heads up. I noticed that as well and I'm going to work on it with our new editor.
Yeah, it was messing with my ears!
It must be better because it didn't sound bad to me. Thanks!
I thought it was my phone. Glad to know it isn't just me
Yes it was totally garbled
I decided to let my natural hair color be 18 months ago & am very pleased. My hair is incredibly soft and shiny. No more broken ends jutting out of the top of my head. It’s a lovely color that has dimension & seems like the color your guest would have had. As we get older darker hair color look harsh. We have to adjust our make up to deal with the contrast because our skin becomes more delicate. I am still learning about the change in color for clothing etc but it’s actually fun. Lots of discoveries. If anyone is considering letting their hair be its natural color, I hope this is helpful!
Yes, the darker color starts to look harsh as our face ages. I love my silver hair and it suits the age of my face 🙂↕️
Do you do this yourself or at a salon?
You three have THE BIGGEST heart for people!! Love, love her decision! ❤❤❤
Her smile at the end speaks volumes!
I love the color. She looks vibrant and beautiful!
It felt relatable. The struggle is real! Thank you for sharing! Very helpful!
I absolutely agree that only you should make the decision. I've never colored my hair and it's naturally silver. IMHO that the color she chose is too dark, a lighter, blended color would've been more flattering and no obvious roots.
Too dark, I agree. I think she looked better with the gray. A more interesting look.
This is soooooo me at the moment!! I have about 2" of grey and I'm on the fence whether to keep going or cave in and dye it again. I would love to see what you would have done IF she decided to go grey.
Justin has suggested adding high/low lights for the transition.
I feel both happy and sad about being stuck in the dye cycle again - but I look my age again now - which is a better feeling for me at 42
Thank you for taking time to listen! I had his same conversation with my hairdresser six months ago, and she helped me much the same way.❤
Her smile at the end says it all . She looks beautiful with her new / old color .
She is a good looking lady and I am so pleased she was happy with the result.
I agree. I thought it was too dark for her complexion which changes as we age.
I agree. Too dark.
I love her new hair color! It looks great on her.
Despite being one of the youngest of my friends, I'm the first one to embrace my natural hair and when I was transitioning my friends thought i was mad and they didn’t like it at all, but when I had the last bit of horrible orangey brown cut off and was fully transitioned, most of them changed their minds and admitted it looked good.
I love it!
Omg! She looks so good with that hair color.
She wasn’t ready and she made the right decision. My mom will be 90 and she still isn’t ready. It’s everyone’s personal decision. Thanks for sharing your story.
She looks beautiful! No wrong choice.
Wow what a fantastic but natural transformation..,definitely guided her the right way 😊
You definitely have to be ready for it.
@@lindacurtis7267I think if I ever decide to go gray,I will wear a wig while it’s in that awful stage.
She decided good. She looks amazing ❤
Wow!!! You look STUNNING with that color! I was also thinking at first that you are going to be stunning with full grey! But WOW!
I love it!!!! Absolutely beautiful on her her eyes pop ❤❤❤❤
