Hi! I'm only 41, but definitely struggling to avoid the middle age frump & figure out how to transition into mature, stylish, flattering clothing choices. As soon as I turned 40 I became very aware of how nice it is to look good without dressing like a 25 year old, lol! I appreciate the efforts to continue being stylish as we age. I feel like our society has just started slowly abandoning efforts to look halfway put together & is just looking sloppy. My grandmother worked hard to look as put together as she could even into her 70's and while I didn't appreciate it as a kid, I do now! I think it's important to our psychological health to keep caring for our outer appearance to some degree, weather we decide to follow trends or not. It just keeps us feeling good, which will improve our attitudes about everything else, too. So great job on keeping up with that!
But, I have to say that the comments on this video are so overwhelmingly nasty! People getting all butt hurt & talking like a bunch of cranky, jealous teenagers! What's up with that!? We're all middle aged, we should be beyond that crap! If you don't like her video then go watch something else! Don't listen to that stuff Marnie!
To everyone complaining & being salty:
1: Please don't be nasty. If you don't agree with the ideas presented, that's ok. These are just some ideas for possible outfit choices. We may dig all the ideas, we may not. There's no need to loudly and rudely complain and insult the creator. We're too old for middle school behavior.
2: Geez, I have never seen so many people so desperate to cling to their dern cardigans and capris! My goodness! I agree that capris are an outdated style, though they work well for some. That's ok! She's just making a suggestion! And there are trendy, flattering ways to wear summer/ warm weather styles without it being capris. I get it, I don't look great in shorts either but if you're sensitive about your capris maybe you're not happy with how you dress & it's time to try out some other styles. If not, just own your love for them. Let's be honest with ourselves and own our own insecurities & struggles & fashion taste.
3: Yes, life creeps in and changes things. I care for a now invalid mom, work 50 hrs a week, & fatigue, bad food choices, & heath issues have caused my 5'7 frame to go from a trim 140 lbs to a bulky, poochy in weird places 220. I am not totally happy with how I look. I sure as heck don't look as good as I used to & am fringing on frumpy. Losing a bit of weight would help me look and feel better for sure. I'm the first to admit I need to watch my weight. No shame in us admitting this. And using excuses only keeps us from improving ourselves. We won't ever look like a beautiful, thin 20 year old, and that's ok! We'll look like the mature classy ladies we are! But even with this weight gain & body change, I can work on my figure/ health (even if it's only a little) and still find stylish, flattering clothes and so can you. Not all these presented styles will work for you, and that's ok. Find something that does. There's no reason to be salty.
4: If you don't like where you are or how you look, work on changing things. Even small changes can make big differences. You are not stuck, I promise! When we constantly look for ways to improve what we don't like we will start to feel better and more confident and will be less bothered by the opinions of others.

Gurllll I agree about the comments. This attitude that we all need to look like models or KK with a perfect body walking the streets with tight really tight spanx or spandex with a bra is ok when your trying to sell your product and you have security with you is ok. School? Work?
Maybe a maxi light easy jacket or cardigan lol over that may look better? I don’t like cardigans I tried but they don’t work for me.
I didn’t want to complain trying to be helpful. Work with your natural beauty and give thought about who you are with strength and confidence that will help with what you are trying to pull off. We all know confidence helps you to look good too.
How do you feel in your clothes? Does a certain piece cause you to stand up straight? To walk differently? I’m old and also used to model so just sharing some life experience.

I love slim fitting 3/4 length sleeves, v-necks, and slim pants. These visually elongate my body and look polished and professional, casually chic, or sporty depending on the color combination. I'm a 70 year old engineer and am told I come across about 25 years younger. I'm only going for energetic and fit. The important thing is to figure out what makes us look "frumpy" and avoid that, which for me is short sleeves, patterns, capris, and sweaters.

I’m about to turn 55 and I wear whatever I want. I live in Florida where it’s hotter than hell all year round and makeup melts down your face, so why bother? I don’t wear 3/4 of the things I have in my closet, including using designer handbags. Just throw on a Bila dress with the big floral prints, flip flops, and a crossbody and you’re off. Priorities change as you age. Instead of investing in designer high-end trends that someone says will be out in two months, I’ll spend my money on quality art supplies, travel experiences, and buy things that have more meaning to me, like say a big chunky bracelet with a turquoise stone. 😂 I personally love thrifting or buying resale for my clothes.

It just really depends on your body type. You should note yours and then that way people know if they should watch based on your body type.
If you really want to get more ppl then include additional body types and the type of clothing.

In fact (funnily enough) the women 25 years younger in the office very often copy my style or ask me where I buy my clothes. Makes me chuckle. I think simplicity, classic lines and block colours are the key to looking younger and always looking stylish. I rarely wear prints, really bright colours etc as they really do make me looker older. But hey…I’m also a fashion historian and collector so have seen the styles that come and go and what particular styles have remained long term as flattering items. I agree with you re jewellery. Yeah that's such a challenge, is someone stylish, or are they just thin. I generally find fat fashion accounts on Instagram etc are the most inspiring bc it's easier to see true style. Fashion is intensely fatphobic, so following people who bypass that aspect and focus on style is useful.

    • @cbpd89
      @cbpd89 Рік тому +14

Yeah, Imma have to agree. Any style that is "frumpy" can look "stylish" on someone who is really thin. You see it all the time, side by side comparisons of outfits on different sized women and the bigger woman is getting shamed while the thin woman is being hailed as a fashion icon.
That's some real nonsense right there.
The only way I think fashion applies differently to the old than the young is that older women who are more stylish are usually going for a classier, more timeless look. Choosing pieces that look good on them, not what is considered trendy.

I also love my cardigan shirts that stop at the waist. I work at school and wear dresses throughout the year. I’m always cold and tight cardigans with my dress make me look put together. I wear the same thing in the winter but I wear them with black tights or leggings with ankle boots. I don’t follow the newest trend but have discovered what really suits my body type and I buy solid colors so they never go out of style. And I’m more drawn to them.

There's nothing more annoying than the word "trend". If you know what works for you, just go with it. Most of us figure this out as we age, but at 36 you are hardly older. When our bodies start changing is where the challenge begins. Not many women get thinner as they age ; neither do men. Most fashion "trends" are aimed at young women.

I realized it was my blush placement. I can't place it on the apples of my cheek anymore bc gravity took over. I resembled a literal 🤡. Meaning my makeup was just sooo noticeable like one. I think a lot of the Frump descent is caused by middle aged spread... I always had a small waist with big hips and boobs no matter what weight I was... then as I entered my 50's, suddenly my waist has ballooned and who knows how to dress THAT figure??? So I wind up wearing things that skim over my boobs and hips and hopefully hide my belly... so we end up in loose boxy shapeless clothes... I get enraged when people tell me to put a belt on to bring it in.... if I still had a waist I wouldn't be hiding it! I appreciate your advice but you HAVE TO show your solutions on someone with that middle aged spread because showing it on someone who still has a good figure is kind of missing the point.

At 65 years old I do agree that many of the clothing choices for older women are not flattering. I think many clothes for older women are designed for comfort which is not a bad thing but it sometimes lacks good more up to date style. That said, I love 3/4 inch sleeves. They keep my arms and shoulders warm without the sleeves getting in the way. Rolling up sleeves is a pain. I never wear pointy shoes, very bad for your toes. Shoes are a very personal choice. Many older women have foot issues (some of which can be attributed to wearing stylish shoes). Wear what feels good and doesn't hurt your feet, lots of choices in footwear now a days. At the end of the day healthy pain free feet are more important than style, but with all the choices out there these days you can usually find something if not well your health is more important. 😂

Hi Everyone!! Just discovered Marine's videos and watched 3 of them this morning. Reading the comments was the really eyes opening part. People are either super supportive or super critical - like there's no middle ground. Marine is >50, tiny, and beautiful. I am 64 and weigh 260. Yeah.... I have those awful fat flappy upper arms. I will continue to buy 3/4 length sleeves to cover them up. Also, shorts ride up like my body is trying to "eat" them. I am continuously tugging the legs of shorts back down - in public!! The solution?? Capris!! Marine looks great in all of her videos. And the actual video is well made and edited. It's just not for me. I guess what I'm trying to say is.... If you really don't like what she has to say then WHY watch it and then leave negative comments?? Go away and watch something else. The key is developing your personal style. Being "on trend" is boring. I have no desire to be on-trend. But I also don't want to be frumpy. You must put in the time to know what cuts of clothing, colors and tones, materials, patterns, and styles complement YOU. There are people who collect vintage clothing. I'm one of them. Dated looks are the point. Some people "want" to recreate retro styles. Some people are into academia, cottage-core, granny-core, nerd-core, or whatever dated vintage look they want the to achieve. The thing is if you're going to do it, go all of the way! Be bold! Be daring! Decide what your core style is and then boldly wear it with confidence. Purchase eclectic one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and mix them with modern staple pieces. Don't let society dictate to you what YOUR personal style should be. You decide. You develop it. It can be many different aspects of your personality. Wild, minimalist, maximalist, low-key, whatever it is you choose. Do you!

Wow! I disagree with so many things you said. But we all have our preferences. Wear whatever makes you comfortable as long as it’s not offensive or inappropriate for the occasion. The main one I want to “point” out is the pointed toe shoe. Wearing pointed toe shoes for years caused me to need surgery on both feet because it deformed them. Podiatrists say to never wear pointed toe shoes. Also being tall my entire life and being teased for wearing “floods” most of my youth, I will never wear pants just above the ankle… or low waisted hip huggers. I love 3/4 sleeves, capris, and symmetrical clothes… asymmetrical is just too sloppy. While I struggle with frumpiness at times, I’ve spent too many years wearing uncomfortable clothes just to “fit in”. Granted you’ll never find me wearing pajamas to Walmart (seriously people?)… you’ve got to draw the line somewhere 😂

Its basically like tucking the bottom of my bra into the top of my pants! And yes leaving the shirt hang down basically does the same thing so I have to go for more fitted things like peplum type shirts, those work best for me. In my opinion unless you have a fairly flat chest and flat stomach, or a long torso the front tuck is really not that attractive.

As a plus size, I find most of the clothings options for a plus size person to be frumpy and hideous!!! If you are heavy wearing a florel pattern or a boxy shirt will not make you less frumpy or thinner. Yet, the clothing/fashion industry seems to think this is what we need!!!!

I don’t get the hate in all the comments here.
Ladies, here’s the reality - a lot of us “dames d’un certain âge” are still in the workforce, the dating world, and school, and we get compared to women who are younger. The women who get passed over for promotions and dates, as well as getting ignored by their professors, are the women that fit the stereotype of the middle-aged woman - frumpy, outdated, no style. Is it fair? No. Does it suck eggs? Yes. However, it’s the cold, hard facts. The trick to remain a contender in all aspects of life is to look as TIMELESS as possible so they can’t guess your age.
Some of the tips that she said in the video may not apply to you because of your body shape or lifestyle, but her info is still relevant. There are middle-aged fashion content creators out there who focus on different body shapes (including the petite, plus-sized apple shape) or different lifestyles, and they’ll say a lot of the same things that Marnie is saying in her video.

Marnie, normally I love your videos, but this one doesn't pass the vibe check. Hating on Chicos fashion that supports women in larger bodies than your own isn't the move. Did you consider that the majority of the women in your capri photo were overweight? Was it hot outside and society has convinced them they can't wear shorts? Or the 3/4 length shirts, did you try them on someone larger, because proportionally they can often look nice and again, are a cooler option. (Many women don't feel comfortable showing their upper arm or have been told it's not professional---of course only when you're above a certain weight). While I agree that dainty jewelry is more fashionable, smaller pieces can look swallowed on a larger person, and a chunky necklace can bring the attention up to someone's face.
I would bet that most people choosing boxy clothing in unflattering colors likely didn't have a choice, by either size or price. Have you ever gone shopping with someone larger than a 14? As a larger person myself (5'10 18-ish depending on how much room for the bust), trying to find suits/workwear that don't have flowers as you described or animal print is difficult. As someone pointed out below, your leather gauchos break several of your rules but look adorable on you simply because you have an acceptable body to society and fashion designers. One has to ask themselves, is it flattering or is she just skinny? Most often the answer is the latter, even with people like Kendall Jenner and Zendaya and all the beautiful people in magazines. In the future it might be nice of you to work with the brands who pay you, such as Walmart, to have lines up to 5x (because that's really only a 2x because these types of influencer brand deals are usually junior sizing) and actually see clothes on different bodies. A quick exercise might be to go to Walmart and look at the differences between plus size clothing and straight sizes and ask yourself what percentage of those clothes would you CHOOSE to buy/wear. Then start the discussion as a brand ambassador.

I wear what I want. I wear what looks good on me. I can't always follow fashion bc frankly, I don't like it and I don't feel like giving freaking China money, hurting the environment or giving companies money who have social justice moralizations. Trends? Ha. bold, modern, etc? Find your style, find your confidence and find your life. I don't or rarely look frumpy, but guess what? I don't give a hoot who thinks what about me bc I've been to enough funerals and estate sales to know that person you try to impress? They die. They move. If they don't like you? It doesn't matter what you wear, they will be nasty. Find your style, enjoy it and to heck with the rest. Life is finite so live your life everyday to the very best you can. God bless.
