I totally agree with your video. I have been cutting my own hair since I was a teen and now at 56... I have discovered that I can totally still enjoy my long hair. It is very thick and even though I also color it, it is extremely healthy. Very long, layers, bangs and styled curls or waves depending on my mood. Loving it!!!❤
@justinhickox Actually, to be very honest with you. My most favorite style would be untamed loose curls as they express a feeling of freedom and curls to go away from the face as opposed to towards. I find it looks way more youthful and fun. I only sometimes straighten to break any routine. I think that hair, from an artist's point of view, is a way to fully demonstrate our personal energy. For example, I am extremely creative, resourceful, and playful. I so I allow my hair to grow, stay loose, I curl it then allow it to play around me.

GenX has completely changed the narrative of what 50 is. We don’t look like our moms or grandmas. We are young at heart and want to look like we feel. I’ll never cut my hair.
No kidding! I actually heard a hair stylist tell her aged client that hair stops growing after 50....as she was doing the woman's roots and I sat there with hair past my waist.
@@plculverhe must be Insane, I am way past 50 and have beautiful, healthy hair to my waist and get compliments on my hair all the time, and I don’t look like a grandma either😃
I would really appreciate a video on HOW to style bangs. They always look super cute when I leave the hair stylist but I have a hard time achieving the same look when at home.
I’ve done everything Justin has suggested a woman my age do. I stopped highlighting my hair, I went to a darker color, I cut my hair into layers, and I wear bangs. Everyone tells me I look great and so much younger! Justin knows what he is talking about!
63 here. I loved this video and your recommendations! So many others say to keep our hair shorter rather than longer. So THANK YOU! And I hope you didn't let those trees get the best of you! ;)
I cut my fringe a bit shorter and WOW, what a difference. I’m 53 with long hair that is often in updo’s. The fringe added that needed touch of “something” and my husband said it brings out my eyes.
@@stephaniesteed7653 I wear mine up in a high bun most days, so I understand what you mean. But it’s waist length, healthy and I can roll it/pin it up in a way that makes it shorter if I ever start to think of cutting it. I am giving myself a trim (about 10cm) today. I keep sitting on it or getting it stuck behind me while driving if it’s down! Rather rude! 😂😂
Ironically, this is exactly what I have done (#4) to my hair (well, really my hairdresser did it!) and I love it! It really represents my true style. I used to have a lot of hair, but being on immunosuppressants has resulted in hair loss, so the layering has given me the appearance of having more hair than I do.
That's awesome! I love hearing this! It's crazy how adding layers can make hair appear thicker right! Many people suffering from hair loss are sure that layering will make it look thinner, but that's not always true at all. So glad you took that step and got great results!
Yes yes! I agree, I have a ton of layers on my thick wavy, curly hair that probably wouldn’t work so well if my hair was straight. It also encourages curl (I’m not super coily , more loose curls mixed with waves) and I love volume so the layers kinda help me bring volume and width right to where I want it. It’s kinda the only hairstyle I can do although I just recently cut off about 5 inches in length and made it just touch my shoulders. Love your videos and I love how you use your beautiful wife as a model. 🥰
Thank you! I love that you agree. It's always nice to hear that from folks. I bet it looks great at shoulder length. Thank you for the support on the videos and I'll make sure to tell Dionna you said that...she always loves hearing it!
Wow, those ladies with very long curly hair 😍so beautiful! I’ve recently got my hair cut and added bangs…sadly I didn’t know my bangs will curl, wave and bend as much as they do! They literally have a mind of their own 😂 Although I’m told that bangs make me look younger, I’m not committed to making them look good and styling them every day. Needless to say I’m growing out my bangs 😆😬
I'm nearly 4 weeks off turning 50. Awesome video, i have had bangs my whole life with long hair. Was thinking of growing fringe out because I now need to use glasses at times, and fringe sits slightly different with them on. But the fringe hides forehead lines and 11 lines. Was bit confused of what to do lol.
Great options! I have long thick hair with only a few grays (I'm 56 and genetics help keep away gray hair until very late in life) and love seeing the options you gave. Right now I color my hair every 6-8 weeks and have the layered look (no bangs as I have very wavy hair and they would look weird) .
Thank you for mentioning bangs in this video. I have my hair like the first style, only not as long. I love having bangs, it does make a big difference for me.
You’re so welcome! I’m glad you love them! Bangs are a fantastic way to add interest to a cut without having to change the rest of the haircut. What style of bangs do you love most?
Thank you for a curly hair tip!! I identify with the longer it gets the wider it gets and I look weird because I am petite. Thanks for great tips and I'm ready to see some more views that "don't suck!"
AAAAAHHHHHH! Justin! I'm on my 3 day countdown to my hair color and cut/trim confusion. This helped as I love my hair curly, or wavy or with "bend". Love your videos for more mature women and you are so right about the curly girls having more layers, if I don't have lots of layers I get that triangle shape you were talking about and it's not flattering to say the least! lol
Great video. After listening to you about layering, I think my hair is over layered in the back. I’ve been wanting a new style. I’m thinning on top a bit and I’m kind of lost on how to best get more volume there. I really wish I could get a consultation from a professional
It would have been nice if the models were women over 50 and they actually looked their age. Not 20, 30-year-olds or models who have had plastic surgery
Great question. The overall premise is the same for 1 and 2 (which now I realize would have been great to mention in the. Video), although the last style is tailored a bit more to your curl pattern than 3/4. With that said, I want to make more curly hair content in the future for sure!

@@justinhickox I appreciated you showing the layers on wavy or textured hair. That's what mine resembles when it is long, even if I blow it out to be rather straight to begin with. Also, having enough layering towards the top (without being too short or disconnected) helps keep my volume from being too flat. (I guess it's the shape of my head and hairline.)
I definitely vibe with style #5! I will have to have it done at my next hair appointment! I have fairly long, silver hair that's naturally curly. Thank you! I have super fine baby hair. My hair stylist says that I have a little pea head. I'm well over 50, thanks to great genes I have no sparkly hairs yet, and I'm so not ready to go short. Our solution: a perm with layers! It gives me the curl and volume I otherwise would never have.
I've grown my hair out, and am scared at the prospect of getting it cut, but I NEED to do something. Your videos have really helped me learn how to communicate with a stylist. Any chance you have a recommendation for central WI 💇♀?
Thanks for the video! Do you recommend someone with a larger forehead to get bangs as the solution to downplay it? Trying to decide if I could handle the feeling of bangs on my face.
Great question! Absolutely bang will help to take some of the length out of your face and add a bit of width to it. It doesn’t have to be full bangs, it could be something like a swept off bang or a butterfly bang style as well. Having something falling along your forehead will help to offset the height of the forehead, and therefore the length of the face. Does that make sense?
How about bangs for those of us who are dealing with thinning at the temples? I really need some bangs as my forehead is super big, but my hair is thinning due to thyroid issues.
Have you got a video of curly/wavy hair for gals over 60?? I'm 62 this year and have naturally curly hair. I've always done a heavy layered look because when it curls the waves are more in conrol

@@justinhickox yes 100 percent and I am an older woman with natural curly hair
In spite of not being 50, I loved the information, thank you! Blessings
I struggle with wanting to cut bangs all the time. I have some clip on bangs that sober me up real fast. I think it’s my round face shape..
These are all great, but what about those of us who have 4c curly?
Great question. The overall premise is the same for 1 and 2 (which now I realize would have been great to mention in the. Video), although the last style is tailored a bit more to your curl pattern than 3/4. With that said, I want to make more curly hair content in the future for sure!
Curly girls unite!
I definitely want to make more curly hair content. What would you like to know? What’s your biggest hair struggle?
@@justinhickox I have an amazing stylist specifically for curly girls, Spiral Evolution in Colorado Springs. I've had an amazing shag cut for many years. I get many compliments on my hair. I keep wondering if I should change my style. But to what? This is the best my hair has ever been!
@@jenn8179 nice! I love hearing about great salons! Stoked you found one and the right stylist for your hair!!! I always say change is growth BUT, if you love your hair, don’t try to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. When you get bored with your hair, or it stops working for you…THAT, I find, is the ideal time to switch things up.
Styling loose curl tips would help me a lot!
Thank you!
THANK YOU!!
Ty, so tired of not feeling pretty bc I’m continuously pulling it up in a bun! I live in the gulf coast of Texas and it’s terrible!❤
U are an absolute genius! U have taught me more on ur channel than I've ever learned from any stylist. Ty n plz keep the vids coming.
Completely agree with you. Thanks for the curly 'do. My ringlets appreciate it.
I love your defensive justification for eating all the things around the holidays. Freaking adorable!
I have a fairy simple shag w kind of spikey eyebrow length fringe bangs. Maintenance is so minimal and I get compliments all the time. I do air dry ( maybe blow bangs a bit ) and then twist in loose bun while I sleep wake up and have salon hair!
Love your videos! Your expertise is very impressive! Thank you for doing the videos.
I love the cut and style Jacqueline Smith is wearing. Can you tell us how to do that cut?
Lets be clear Farrah rocked that hair longgggggg before Jacklyn Smith.
Love this video! LOVE the camisole/ Swiss Army knife analogy…. (Way to break it down) and my boyfriend is a real life legit lumberjack 😭His closet has no less than 35 of your exact shirt. Kinda like Brawny the paper towel dude but with a more realistic dude bod. Thanks for the concise video and chuckles ❤
Another good video with explanations as to exactly why you are making these recommendations.
Thank you so much! Which style did you like most?
@@justinhickox I appreciated you showing the layers on wavy or textured hair. That's what mine resembles when it is long, even if I blow it out to be rather straight to begin with. Also, having enough layering towards the top (without being too short or disconnected) helps keep my volume from being too flat. (I guess it's the shape of my head and hairline.)
I definitely vibe with style #5! I will have to have it done at my next hair appointment! I have fairly long, silver hair that's naturally curly. Last time I got a trim I didn't get layers for some dumb reason and I noticed a huge difference in how my hair looked! For me layers are a must!! My age is 51 btw....
Thanks 🙏🏻 i have turned 50 and have long hair and a full face. Got lots of ideas here.
Lovin' your tips and tricks! I wear glasses. Would you mind doing (or perhaps have already done) a.video concerning hairstyles to have/not to have. . Over 50 y.o.
I just love your videos! I have watched each and every one more than a couple times but that has resulted in me being so confused. I have not had a haircut since February of 2021 because I just don't know what to do with it. At 68 I find myself with long scraggly hair with no body nor shape. It doesn't help that my whole face has migrated toward my waistline and I have an oxygen hose in my nose but I love to watch your videos!
Hah! Just got my hair chopped into a blunt chin length bob with the back lightly beveled. LOVE IT! I feel ten years younger and so much lighter.
Thank you Justin.
Agree, waves are timeless, just like the Bob!!!…great, helpful video!!!…I colored my hair, Justin!!!!…I was so bored with the grey, and it is not easy to care for!🤣🤣..I broke my pelvic bone in two places in April, a walker and grey hair helped me make my choice to color, too!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣thanks for another informative video, you lumberjack!!!!🤣🤣🤣much love and appreciation to you and Dionna!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜#OGCommunityRockstar
Hey Linda! SO sorry to hear about your Pelvis! I hope you're healing up fast! Damn, that must be tough. You're strong though, so it's probably nothing for you! How exciting you colored your hair! Are you loving it???
@@justinhickox I am still going for PT 3 times a week, but almost healed!!!..I ditched that walker after 3 weeks!🤣🤣🤣🤣yes, I am loving my hair!!..it is growing more, too!..wooohooo!…it’s been a long journey healing, but, we do what we have to do!…I hope you are doing great!!!!!💜
My husband broke his pelvis in two places and dislocated in a third place in June. I know the tough road you're on. Keep up the good work!
@@melsterifficmama1808 thank you so much!!!!..good luck to your husband, as well!!!!💜💜💜💜💜
Beautiful!!
So glad you came around compared to your video a month ago. I read the so many comments of people who were offended and suppose you did too. Thanks for the 180!
Love your shirt!! ❤
Thank you so much!
How bout my favorite classic Farrah Fawcett hair cut. Its the best!
73 with thinning hair. Always had lots of thin hair but now my volume is much less. Recently switched to a chin length cut without layers. I wash twice a week and condition the ends but add volume mousse to the roots. Face with good cheekbones, high forehead, long narrow shape. Always wore my hair shoulder length until recently. I like your channel and suggestions.
Thank you! I have super fine baby hair. My hair stylist says that I have a little pea head. I'm well over 50, thanks to great genes I have no sparkly hairs yet, and I'm so not ready to go short. Our solution: a perm with layers! It gives me the curl and volume I otherwise would never have.
Yaas, I got a perm this year as well-for we ladies who do not cooor, this is a fab option!
You always have great hair tips and i just like you for some reason. ☺️
I'm so glad you included your wife's photo. She is so pretty.
I've grown my hair out, and am scared at the prospect of getting it cut, but I NEED to do something. Your videos have really helped me learn how to communicate with a stylist. Any chance you have a recommendation for central WI 💇♀?
Thanks for sharing 💫🦋💫💫🦋💫
Thank you for the video
Most love wigs that are so natural
I like your shirt. Hey you're from the PNW so you look great. Thanks for your input!
Thank you! Yeah, in the PNW, lumberjack is a uniform! LMAO
Agree easy to cut straight hair
Thank you!
lol...showing J. Smith and C. Brinkley.👌👌💜💜🎉🎉
I'd love bangs, but I have a cowlick. Wish you could cut it for me!!! :)
It`s magical!!!!
Amazing!!! Thanks
Need one for us curly girls.
More curly styles please
Love the shirt! As a matter of fact, I have one just like it in my closet. :)
Nice! Thank you! I love this one because it has a lot of stretch to it too...I feel like lots of flannel shorts are pretty stiff....you agree?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a flannel with stretch! I love stretch, too! I’ll have to look for some for my dearest one!
Just found you... You're a hoot... (I do that holiday thing too)..
Thank you 😊 ❤
At 30 i always cut my hair about shoulder coz i rthink i"m already matured, but now at 50 i let my hair longer and i" m happy and confident😅
Please do the same for curly/wavy hair! I’m 58 and don’t ever want short hair, I’d like a new look though… great section in this vid for us curlys ty!
@@justinhickox Yes, that makes sense and is helpful, thank you! I think starting with a side swept bang might be the way to go to ease into it.
How about bangs for those of us who are dealing with thinning at the temples? I really need some bangs as my forehead is super big, but my hair is thinning due to thyroid issues.
Bangs seem to make my slight jowl problem look more noticeable. My heart-shaped face backfired a bit. I'm drinking collagen now.❤ Ole Russ Brown girl.
Good I’m wearing the right wigs!
Have you got a video of curly/wavy hair for gals over 60?? I'm 62 this year and have naturally curly hair. I've always done a heavy layered look because when it curls the waves are more in conrol
