Black Girl Speaks PERFECT CANTONESE in Chinatown, Ordering Dim Sum in Cantonese

  • I was craving some dim sum, so decided to go into Chinatown to practice my Cantonese. I ordered completely in Cantonese and it was nice to see the waitress so happy that I spoke her mother tongue. Although it was only for a short amount of time, I haven’t spoken Mandarin in a while, so it was nice to use that too.

It's one thing to just be able to speak cantonese, but you've also gotten the mannerisms, tones, quips, and the "personality" of the language down. Amazing job! And the fact that you've only studied for 5 years makes it even more incredible!

Grace, I’m a Canadian born guy who’s parents are from HK. All of my friends/gfs are white. I grew up speaking Canto but I’m unable to read/write Chinese. I wish I learned growing up, but alas…
I just want to tell you that I’m proud of you. I get that learning another language in our adult years is next to impossible, but along with other UA-camrs (rip Moses), your impressive passion to learn Canto is out of this world amazing!
Daps to you for keeping your mind open and envoloping yourself in another culture. So many people are extremely proud of you my dear. Never stop ok?

As a Cantonese-speaking Malaysian Chinese, I'm so so super proud of you to have learnt & keep on preserving the Cantonese language existence as number of Cantonese speakers around the world is shrinking especially in Guangzhou province. I'm not worried about HK as Cantonese is a compulsory dialect if you wanna live there. Hope you have a nice trip to HK & Shenzhen/Guangdong soon!

Your Cantonese is really good. You even speak better than my daughter who was born in US. I speak Cantonese to her and she speaks Cantonese and English back to me. So proud of you as you learned it from online without any teacher. You like boba milk tea. You know all Hong Kong stuffs. When you go to Hong Kong, people will be surprised when they hear you speak Cantonese.

Cantonese is one of the major southern dialects that has preserved the ancient Hanyu expressions & pronunciations.
The oral reading in Cantonese of Tang & Song Dynasty poems show that the ending words of each line rhyme perfectly in each verse ( according to their formulas ).
However, such is not the case in Putonghua ( or Mandarin ), the designated national spoken language after the 1911 revolution.

In 1500s N Chinese greatly changed
pronunciation from older style, when it used to sound similar to
today s SE and Central East dialects,
except Xiang of Hunan, which followed
      N sound changes.
      N ers
      1) dropped k p t glottal stop m syllable end consonants
      2) invented and added new syllable.start
consonants, like xi, ji, qi, sh, zh. ch, etc.
They also developed new vowels, like
chi to eat, si private, de, to get, etc.

I am rooting for you, always. You speak way better than my own kids who are Chinese and have been brought up in a household speaking Cantonese to them all of their lives. My son is now 20 and my daughter is 15 years old. They don't even speaking nearly as well as you (because they refuse to learn). There is NO REASON AT ALL for you to be nervous nor shy. You have LOTS & LOTS of fans who are rooting for you. You did an awesome job at the restaurant and I hope you enjoyed your meal. I love your smile. You bring a smile to my heart! Hi Grace, your Cantonese is AMAZING! However, I noticed one little thing at the end of the video. For 500,000, it is not like five hundred thousand in English. We don't say 五百千, but we say 五十萬 in Chinese. 一萬 is ten thousand, so five hundred thousand would be 五十萬. But overall, I think you did a great job! I can't wait to see more videos like this!

Another comment of praise from a local: I played you to my girlfriend and she exclaimed, "She's good!"
I'm still learning, and you are definitely ahead in vocab, and probably in the grammar side of things. (Hard to tell from simple interactions).
Where I am really impressed though and hope to get to the same standard, is in how quick you are to hear-understand-respond. For me, there is still a few seconds where I parse what I've heard and then laboriously construct a reply!

I'm originally from Hong Kong and Cantonese is my first language. Your Cantonese is very clear and understandable. Many people including myself have thought of Cantonese as a dialect BUT this is not true. Cantonese is a Language with different sentence structure and written differently than Mandarin. There's a minor correction that I would like to point out, when you said you "finished eating", the words are correct but the etiquette is to say "I am full (我吃饱了)". I learned this from my parents who corrected me many time 🤣, "finish eating" means that you are dead therefore finished. I hope this helps. It's great to see non natives learn my language. Keep it up!
