The Mixer Fixer Returns; Tightening up a Loose Kitchenaid ~ Rick's Tips DIY

  • Hi All! This week I have to tear down the yellow Kitchenaid mixer that Noreen uses in the kitchen again and give it a good tightening up. The head will become loose on occassion and rock back and forth when kneading bread and since we make our own bread every week, our mixer gets a work out. Time to crack it open and give it a little tweak.
    We have a 6 quart Kitchenaid Professional 600, lift bowl mixer. It is long out of warranty and I have repaired this at least 6 times in the last two years. I don't know how many more times I will be able to repair it, if any and we are saving for a new commercial model. We are planning to have one very soon.
    If you have a Kitchenaid mixer that is acting up don't be afraid to approach this task. Do your research and assess the level of knowledge you are going to need to fix the problem. I have fixed the entire gear box, replaced the lower plate and taken apart and put this back together several times. There isn't that much to it and you can do it. Please make sure your mixer is out of warranty and you will be fine.
    Make sure you have the right tools and you can do just about any task. This just required me to remove and replace some allen screws and some lock washers. I made sure these were not going anywhere by adding a dab of E-6000 glue. This should keep things nice and tight for a while.
    When you put everything back together and test the machine for efficacy you may notice that it sounds different. This is because everything needs to re-seat and redistribute. After a few moments it should sound normal again.
    I hope this was helpful and if you have a similar problem I hope you feel like you can do this repair yourself. You most likely spent a lot of money on your mixer just like we did so it is important to know how to take care of it if you need to!

    My KitchenAid walked itself off the counter, and later began wobbling so bad I thought I would need to replace lt. I watched this a dozen times before I dared trying it. SO easy! The three screws were almost completely out of the sockets, but screwed right back in. Had a bit of problem getting the gear housing cover back on, and also the strap around the outside, but got it all back together. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

      ***** These mixers now come with a 1 year "limited" manufacturers warranty. They will only replace the mixer if it breaks within the first 90 days. After that you have to purchase a mailer which they send you and then you send your mixer to them to diagnose the problem and get back to you with a quote as to how much it will cost you to have them fix it. Then you have to pay to get them to ship it back to you! In most cases I would say you are halfway to a new mixer at that point because the silly mailer costs either just under or just over $125 which includes the "bench fee" for them to look at the broken appliance. Quite a racket I'd say. Rick has fixed this thing six or 8 times in the last two years and we have put less than $100 in parts total for all the times he has had to crack it open. We believe that the cracked plate was that way when we received it and were too stupid to notice and too excited to have been able to actually have one of these mixers that I'd dreamed of for years.

    "locator Pins" Wanted to keep this important aspect of the repair up in the comments as my mixer did have the pins that rick mentions in a reply to a comment several years ago, but had slid up into the housing rendering them non functional. I was able to purchase longer pins for replacement. I also believe with out the pins in place the tightening of the screws will not last. I probably should have placed some adhesive of sorts at the base of the pins to hold them in place, but did not. I was concerned about "gluing" the screws as it could possibly make repairs to the bowl lift mechanism difficult. If I need to repair again I will switch screws to hex and use adhesive on both screws and pins.

      it is still much better than most other mixers on the marker. even considering prices higher than kitchen aids. not to mention you can get pretty much any part for a kitchen aid mixer right down to a gasket or a nut and bolt.although i do agree that they should have something between the head and the back so it doesnt do this. maybe a flange or something that was casted when the head was cast.

      +zianini1 If it happens again separate the two pieces and make sure the metal dowel pins (3 I think. (They forgot mine!) ) are still there. These will help prevent the two housings from becoming loose in the first place.

      Glad to help, but please read through the other comments below! There are supposed to be two or three "locator pins" between the mixer head and lower housing. If these pins are missing then your mixer's head will continue to loosen over time. Check to make sure they are there if you need to go inside the mixer again. :)

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 років тому +2

      If this has happened more than once to you of if it happens again you may have the same problem I did. And that is that they also forgot to install your "locator pins" during factory assembly (mine never had any!) The next time you have to make this repair remove the head and there should be 2 roll pins sticking up near the screw holes but opposite from each other. If your's are also missing you can just go to your hardware store and buy 2 roll pins. Until you install these missing pins you will be making this repair over and over again.

    Red lock tight will NEVER come loose again. After the blue stuff didnt hold, then the gloves come off. I used red lock tight on Single cylinder snowmobile engines because if you didnt, the engine would shake its self apart ( and did). After using it on every single bolt, I never had another one come apart. I know red has to use heat to get it to come loose but the idea was you didnt want them comming apart anyways. Epoxy would work too I guess but red lock tite was designed for that type of application. After the last time, I would have said enough is enough. I bought me a Bosch Mixer and love, love , love Bosch. I got both the large mixer and the smaller one. The small one gets used the most because it sits right on the counter and is handy. I only break out the big mixer when I have larger batches or heavier doughs to make up. The reason I got Bosch in the first place was size. I wanted a more compact unit that didnt stand as tall as a Kitchenaide mixer. I have not been disappointed.

      @@rickstipdiy I researched mixers for a month or so before deciding. My mother and grandmother both had kitchen aid mixers. The quality in the new ones is NOT the same as the old ones. I decided based on counter space and quality. My siblings got the other mixers and that ok with me. I am highly satisfied with my decision.

About a year ago I had to re-install the whole lower housing like you did due to the same failure. Now I see the lower housing has broken again and the worm gear is stripped again. I can't believe it. I really do not want to sink anymore money into this thing only to have it fail again a year later. Extremely frustrated with KitchenAid.

    The planetary gears have gone out twice on my 600 pro. I'm fed up with Kitchenaid crap. My old Kitchenaid lasted for decades with heavy use in commercial kitchens. The gears in it were steel, not the cheap nylon crap used today. It's going to Goodwin along with all of the attachments. I've invested in a Bosch compact mixer that is more powerful and no need to hang onto to keep it from walking off of the counter.

    thank you for this video .I have same model and changed worm gear and worm follower. There is a clicking sound that I cant get rid off or know where it comes from. It is not the gears because they all look good and the replacements not defective. I think clicking is motor related.could be brushes or bearings. But don't know where the brushes located (unlike the 5qt that is on the cover above the speed switch ). your help in this regard is much appreciated.Thanks,Essi

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 років тому +3

      OK, first off when you changed the worm gear and follower did you happen to notice if the top main shaft bearing/bushing (the one that goes in the top of the gear box cover) had fallen out? There is literally NOTHING to prevent this from happening and when it does it will put extreme stress and strain on your worm gear and follower. To prevent this from happening I put nylon bushings on the shaft to serve as spacers so the top bushing/bearing can't fall out of the gearbox cover.
      To narrow down the clinking noise, try removing the worm gear and run the motor by it's self. If the clinking is still there then it's the motor and I would make sure that no wires or screws are interfering with any of the moving parts on the motor. If the clinking stops then it's coming from your drive train somewhere and I would recheck all the gear alignments for interference or binding and don't forget the planetary gear below where your beaters, paddles, etc attach. Hope this helps and good luck!

    We just finished fixing my Kitchen Aid Professional 600. Where are your locator pins? At 5.47 when you take the top off there are the three screw holes then two locator pin holes. There are no pins in the holes but I cannot see the underside of the last piece you removed to see if yours were like mine. Mine were too short and worked their way flush causing the head to wobble. A trip to the hardware store to purchase longer pins (#10's twice as long as the ones in there) and that fixed it fine. No wonder your head kept loosening up again. Your keeper pins aren't there.

      Judy Camp That may be the cause of my problem. Since the very first time I took this unit apart there were NEVER any pins between the motor housing and the stand so I didn't know they were supposed to be there!! They must have forgot to install them on this unit!! Thank You!! That explains a lot!!

      I have exactly the same problem. I can see my pins in the underside of the top, but they're flush with it, and I can't see how to remove them. Also, do you recall the size of the pins? I'd probably just buy an assortment and see what fits, but there's no point if I can't remove the old pins.
      Rick, do you have any idea of how to remove them?

    Hi Rick,...do you know what I might need to do for a delay start on my KA? I have a Pro 5Qt. 475 watt,...and I use it often for bread,....Noreen's everyday bread recipe, and many other pastries. But for a while now, almost every start up,...there is a 5 or so second delay before it engages,...or I turn it off, and then it delays but starts. Once it is going, I have no other problem with it. My husband will do the work,...but we just need some direction to go in. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, to you and Noreen for all the hard work, time, and effort you two devote to providing us all with a wonderful, helpful, and enjoyable site to visit, and benefit from!

      anniebsattic1 Noreen has informed me that her mixer does the same thing. So I'm thinking this may be an integral quirk to kitchen aids. You can try one thing though. Take the top cover off and pull the four connectors off of the circuit board (ONE AT A TIME) and put them right back on so you don't get them mixed up. This will take care of any potential loose or corroded connector problems that could be causing a delayed start. Hope that helps!!

I went to the website you referred another poster to below, the webstaurantstore.com, I was amazed at the great prices for the commercial 7 and 8 qt. KA. We will give your help a try. You all have a wonderful safe weekend!

    Hey Rick, have a random question. My washer when its filling up the water is barely trickling out. If I twist the water valve behind it the water will start coming out more but Im having to do this each load. Is there a way to keep it from having to be adjusted? Thanks in advance!!!

      CherryRed TX I assume you are talking about the shutoff valve either in or on the wall behind the washer. If that's the case then it sounds like the valve is wearing out and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately NOT an easy task and most likely will require the water to the house to be shut off.

    Just a thought but an old mechanics/hotrodder tip you could try would be to instead replace the 1 piece bolts in favor of studs and washers/lock washers and nuts.
    Loctite the threaded studs in the holes, add washers/lock washers and then loc tite the nuts. This gives more clamping power than bolts and is easier on the units threads since the studs remain installed. All you have to do then to remove is to remove the nuts and washers. This trick is used in several scenarios on cars including carburetors, intake mainifolds, exhaust manifolds and headers to name a few.

      Sadly the newer versions like mine are not the same as the older ones like yours. I seriously doubt they would be the same bolts. We no longer have this mixer. We pitched it because it is garbage. I now have a German made Bosch.

      @rickstipdiy  6 років тому

      Wow! You've got one of the older ones that were made by Hobart and are virtually indestructible! But yeah, if you're going inside it anyway, I'd recommend that you remove the bolts (no, I'm not sure what size they are) and install studs with some type of adhesive (locktite, epoxy, metal glue,etc.) then reattach when you're ready with washers, lock washers nuts OR "nylock" self locking nuts. Good luck!

    Apologies if you've already answered this, but doesn't the use of a flat washer under the lock washer negate the benefits of the lock washer? The flat washer will just rotate as usual without something fixed to bite into? Listening to my wife's mixer knocking in the background, i'm wondering how this last fix of yours has held up over the last two years. Thanks for the video!

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 років тому +1

      Without getting into the science behind it any mechanic or engineer will tell you it is, and always has been, common practice to always use a flat washer with a lock washer. And yes, this latest repair seems to have done the trick.

      OK when you go back into the mixer and you remove the three screws remove the head and there should be 2 or 3 roll pins sticking up near the screw holes but opposite from each other. If your's are also missing you can just go to your hardware store and buy some roll pins. Until you install these missing pins you will be making this repair over and over again.

    Mine makes the same noise. Is that normal? It's very loud and having it on even 5 minutes for pizza dough feels forever. Could it be that is missing grease? I bought it this year and has been making that noise since I bought it.... thanks for the advice!

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  4 роки тому

      First and foremost, if it's still under warranty then contact Kitchen-Aid to see where you can have it serviced. If you're lucky you may have an authorized place locally. Not sure if you're referring to the sound at the beginning or end, if it's the beginning with the "clunking" then you may have something loose and you need to look closely to see if there is movement between the mixer head and body. If so, just follow my instructions here to fix that. If you mean the whining noise at the end it is normal at first but if it hasn't gone away after a few uses you may want to go back in and examine everything. First, check to make sure one of the wires isn't being rubbed by the motor anywhere. If that's not the case then check to make sure your gears aren't showing signs of damage such as wear marks or metallic specks in the grease. If so then all the gears and grease will have to be replaced. The grease is very thick and plentiful and can't just "run out" so unless you removed it all and forgot to put it back then I doubt that it would need more grease. Or your mixer may just be normally a little extra noisy since there are a lot of moving parts. As long as it's not showing any signs of abnormal wear I would just continue using it for as long as it will last or until something presents it's self that will require repairing. I hope that helps and good luck!

      This was just temporary and we have since ditched the Kitchenaid. I will never have one again! I bought a Bosch Universal Plus Mixer and won't ever look back. If you bake any sort of bread on any sort of scale, then the KA will always fail on you. They are pretty much just pretty jewelry for the person who wants it to look nice on their counter. If you want a real beast of a machine that is in the same price range of the KA Professional, then look no further than the Bosch Universal. I have had mine for four years and it can do up to 15 pounds of whole wheat bread dough at one time! Not to mention all the other things!

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  6 років тому

      Yes, your kitchenaid most likely keeps stopping because it's over heating. KA recommends that you knead bread dough for no more than 7 minutes at a time (most likely to prevent overheating). The Bosch Universal has no such restrictions. :)

    Thanks for this! I have the same (I think -- at least it's the kind where the bowl moves, not the head) mixer, and the same problem. I tried tightening it once, and got as far as getting the cover off (didn't remove the motor). I ended up taking it to an appliance repairman who tightened it up, but it got loose again.
    I have two questions:
    First and foremost, did the adhesive work? Is it still tight?
    Second, I'm not the most mechanically savvy, but I would think the flat washer would defeat the purpose of the lock washer. If the lock washer digs into the aluminum, wouldn't that just help it stay put better?

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 років тому

      +Michael Vezie Yes, so far so good! :) If yours loosened up again, as did mine, then you probably have the same problem I didn't realize I had because mine (locator pins) were missing because they were probably forgotten at the factory! Between the base and the motor/gear housing (under the cover) where the two sections bolt/screw together should be 2 or three pins. If yours are missing you can just go to your hardware store and get what are called "roll Pins" they come in different sizes so you may have to find a way to determine the size you need. Also the Mending Shed www.mendingshed.com/ is an excellent resource for inexpensive kitchen aid replacement parts!
      And no, you always use a flat washer with a lock washer. The lock washer will lock just as tightly to the flat washer as it would the aluminum housing without doing damage. It's not as critical here as it would be if dealing with something more expensive made from aluminum such as engine parts but it's still a good practice to get into.

    hi rick I wanted to take the time to thank you for the tip on were to get motor brushes, but they say that you can not replace the brushes in that motor, the one in your video. what say you? I've never had to go inside the motor so I don't know. If they do sell the brushes separately at the mending shed you could go ahead and get them and try it yourself, (otherwise, I have no idea where you could buy replacement brushes) or you could just buy a replacement motor from them which might not be a bad idea just in case something goes wrong with the motor rebuild. Then you could rebuild the old motor to have a backup on hand.

      Prepping Angel Hard to tell without actually looking at it but my first thought was maybe a crossed connection on the circuit board (especially if you've done repairs and disconnected the circuit board) or a loose or corroded connector. You can open it up and disconnect and reconnect the wires on the circuit board ONE AT A TIME and see if that helps. But then you said first and second will work under a load which sounds like a motor problem (sticky motor brushes or worn motor bearings) which wouldn't be an in-expensive repair as the motor would need to be replaced. +Allie Irick I don't think so. You are going to have to either have it looked at by a certified repair shop or you are going to have to contact Kitchenaid and ask for their options. They are going to ask you a bunch of questions by which they will determine if you have voided the warranty. So be very careful what you say to them. They will want you to send it to them. They will also make you pay for a "mailing kit". This may be something you can look at if you or someone you know is mechanically inclined. Sounds like you really need to have it looked at though. Sounds like it is a bigger problem than what you can see on the outside. If you heard any kind of grinding, I would guess that this is a gear issue and they will likely need replacing.
