Fixing a KitchenAid Mixer that fails the dime test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лют 2020
- When a mixer fails the 'dime test' (i.e. fails to push a dime around the bowl when it is raised), the typical answer on the internet is to adjust the adjustment screw. What do you do when that's not enough. Join me as we nearly destroy a mixer to finally pass the 'dime test'.
Thank you for posting something that was more helpful than just suggesting to use the adjuster screw!
Right? I was so frustrated when I couldn't find any info on how to get that last millimeter of adjustment. I thought to myself "I'll either destroy it or fix it".
2:22 had me laughing!! You were so calm about it too which made it even funnier!
Anyway thanks for making this video. We were having problems with our bowl being too low and I thought I had to adjust screw clockwise which I couldn't turn any tighter. The factory had it set at max tight. When I watched your video the part that made me realize I had to turn screw counterclockwise was when you had the white strip showing the bowl height 6:42 and what happens when you turn the screw/cam. It made sense so I tried turning the screw on ours counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to maybe half a turn. That made the bowl come up and the dime test worked much better! I am leaving it alone for now to see if it's good or not. Thanks again!
That sounds like the best possible outcome. I really hated to modify the metal. I think the mixer was nervous too. Maybe that's why it jumped off the table. (Had to leave that in the video for entertainment value)
Thank you!!! I’ve been searching for the answer to this issue and only could find “adjust the screw”. My mixer is fixed after 10 years of dealing with this.
Wow! I'm so happy to hear that my video helped you. I'm sorry it took ten years for you to find a solution. Happy baking!
Great video! Yah got a giggle on the “make sure it’s secure” part. If I had a nickel for every time...
It reminds me of the time I dropped the starter of my Camaro on my face. It all happens so suddenly and I'm not quick to get out of the way.
@@FloridaJoe3 I’m just sad there’s no video of that! 🤣 poor guy!
THANK YOU! This worked. I took it apart & used a burr bit on my dremel, though. Also, to the person who suggested tightening the nut, that didn’t do anything. I even tried adding another washer. Did nothing.
So glad this helped. I wasn't sure if anyone would actually try it but wanted to put it out there because it seemed to work for me. Really loving having stand mixer after all these years.
@@FloridaJoe3 lol yeah ME TOO, after having one for 10 years and rarely using it, it finally works!! I have only used a flat beater with silicone edges that I got from Amazon because its the only way I could figure out to make it a useful appliance. Ty again!! I’ve been making my own Krispy Kreme copycat donuts since I fixed it using your tip! 😁
Great video!
Thank you! I searched and searched for a video like this when I got the mixer and didn't find it so I made one. Glad you liked it!
To anyone watching this: Please make sure you have the correct beater attachment before you do such an invasive repair job. In this case, the beater depicted that fails the dime test is an “F-Series” flat beater, meaning it is meant to be used with the 6 quart glass bowl that also fits this mixer. The flat beater that is used with the stainless steel bowl is quite large and is white or grey nylon coated.
Thank you so much for this comment. That makes a lot more sense. I bought the mixer from a gal that regularly bought and sold and apparently mixed and matched parts. It's nice to know that I could have gotten another beater to fix the problem. I hope everyone reads this comment before they mod their mixer. Thanks again.
I rather mod mine anyway, because I don't like things that barely adjust far enough. If I want to turn it far enough for the beater to grind up the bowl, so be it. At least I have plenty of adjustment!
You are correct. I have the same machine and my beater bar has a 3rd bar inside the outer frame for better mixing and looks larger. Mine is all silver and that is the wrong beater bar for that machine. I still like the ingenuity. Sometimes you have to think outside the box, pretty much where I’m at most the time anyway. Enjoyed the video.
Good video. We added washers yesterday. The mixer still didn't cream butter and sugar well even though it passed the "dime test" with the washers installed. Additionally, the washers put the bowl at a tilt relative to the rest of the mixer. I will try your fix next. I will use a Dremel tool to remove material from the cam.
I think a Dremel tool would be ideal. I need to get one. Good luck with your repair.
Okay got it. Throwing my Kitchenaid on the floor will fix it. Thank you! :D
You can't just throw it, you have to let it roll off the table. :)
I have the K5SS and still can't locate the adjust crew yet. It's not locate in the middle along main vertical shaft or above the bowl area.
Congratulations! An excellent video of what not to do.
Sorry you didn't like it but I've been happily using the blender for 3 years now. So while it was a possibly a wasted effort, the patient survivied the surgery.
Jackass
Just another thought - slightly bending the bowl mounting tabs downward, each side tab, also "raises" the bowl.
Interesting idea. Or maybe put washers under them but I'm not sure how well the bowl would lock in place with that kind of modification.
Wife comes flying in, like.. "What The Hell Is Going On In Here???" Trying to fix appliances again honey. "Oh, ok. I thought burglars were breaking in"
I was fortunate to be working on this when my wife was out of town. I was so glad to see that the mixer was unharmed.😅
Such a small range to fix the height!
I have the opposite problem. The beater is touching the bottom of the bowl -- something I definitely remember it _not_ doing a few months ago -- but when I turn the height adjustment screw, there is no noticeable change in bowl height.
Hmm... interesting. And the bowl is fully seated?
I'm having the same issue with my commercial mixer!
@@justus4685 Oh no! Were you able to fix it?
Thanks.
You're welcome
You know you can loosen the bowl clamp take some slack out of the handle by raising the bowl arm a bit then go on with the dime test adjustment.
No, I didn't know that. I will have a look and see if that works for me. Thank you for the comment.
Can you explain how to go about this? Thanks
I took my mother‘s apart including all four screws on the vertical column. I have now ruined the connection between the lifting handle. I can’t get the screws to align with the chunky gold mechanism that hides in the column and lifts the bowl. Every time I put a screw in, it behaves like a bobblehead and moves backward in the shaft. I can’t catch it with the screw & it almost seems stuck. Should I take the base off & access it from there? I’m afraid to do more damage. I saw how you lifted your arms up and off the column but I need more visual instruction on how to get the handle to reengage and lift the bowl. Wonder if you could help because I have not found anything else on UA-cam that comes close. Thank you.
Wow. It sounds like you're into it now. I'm not sure how you're able to do anything without taking off the base. Go ahead and get that off and I think you'll be able to reach and hold things to put them back together. Good luck.
Thank you. I’ll try it soon.
I went ghost white when I saw that mixer fall...
You and me both. It works like a champ still. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
Haha I wan’t paying full attention to the video and was walking off when I heard the clang and said “oh sh** did the mixer fall?” LOL
You could of added two small washer on the two bowl pins instead of destorying the mixer
I thought of that. I think it's a good idea but I wanted a more "permanent" solution. Thank you for commenting.
Get a beater blade, not the kitchenaid flex edge. problem solved. You can even do small batches with the beater blade.
A beater is good for cream or eggs but I wouldn't want to mix cookie dough with it.
i just bought mine brand new and i cant turn the screw all the way to the left or right, its just turning a quarter turn
That's all it's supposed to turn, it's a very tiny adjustment...
@@ruthless4645 but even after turning, i still cant make the dime move
@@game_master834 i have the same problem with a brand new one
@@game_master834 thus the reason for this video. Mine has been that way since I got it. Before I got my current one, I had another one that would never work right, and gave it away. Thought MAYBE a new one would work correctly, but NOPE.
It’s nice to have a handy husband!
Even if he almost destroys your mixer while fixing it?!
You know you can trust the advice of the guy who drops his mixer on the floor.
They say experience is the best teacher. Didn't want to leave that out of the video in case someone else is as clumsy as me.
@@FloridaJoe3 thanks for leaving it in as a warning to us all. haters gon hate...
@@notreal5299 Thanks for the encouragement. I find it refreshing when someone is not perfect on social media and I'm certainly not perfect in any medium. Hope you're enjoying your Kitchenaid mixer as much as we are.
Looks like your beater is not for this 6qt bowl the 6qt beater should be bigger.
