- I have a KitchenAid food mixer that appears to be leaking oil!:) Nobody wants machine grease/oil in their food, so it is time to fix it. Fortunately, I am relatively handy and the the grease/oil used in these types of mixers are food-based. Food-based grease/oil is used for a reason ... so if/when the oil separates and potentially falls into your mix, you will not be harmed.

I found a couple of videos on UA-cam. Yours far exceeds the others. It was well explained and the step by step process allowed me to fix my KitchenAid mixer. When I initially saw the grease coming out of the mixer I thought I was going to have to get rid of mine, which is fairly new. However, when I came on to your production it saved me hundreds of $$$. Thanks and great work. Most appreciated.
Hi Juan and glad to be of help!:) This is exactly why I create videos - to hopefully help others:). Most people get a nice mixer and use it to varying degrees. After a specified amount of time, the grease will break down and oil will leak which is relatively normal. Unfortunately, the manufactures do not call attention to this issue which leads most people to think their mixer is broke:). Glad you found the video and saved your mixer!:)
Thank you for this wonderful walk-through! I bought my Artisan mixer almost 10 years ago. When it started leaking oil several years ago, I freaked out and left it alone. Until I saw your video, I was ready to just buy another machine. But I ordered a tub of grease, borrowed some tools from my husband, and fixed it this afternoon. You have my sincere appreciation! 👍🏻

@@RealWorld I just watched your video and I think you might have made a mistake. The front end where the attachment goes for sausage grinding etc IS suppose to have grease. Unless Kevin on Living Traditions Homestead did it wrong. Also did you get food grade grease? I was pleased to see the prospective struggles with the re-assembly and lining up the gears. I hate it when people make things look so easy and then you are shocked when things don't go so smooth for yourself. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this video. It’s so low-key and evenly paced, it gives me courage. I hadn’t used my Artisan in over a year and when I went to use it again, there was oil under it. I’ve used it since, and there has only been a little oil under it occasionally-but lately I’m finding more. The oil is on the counter underneath the mixer, not dripping into the bowl-until today, when I found a lot of oil under the mixer and a small amount in the bowl. Most people talk about the oil leaking into and around the “beauty ring.” Well, you’ve given me encouragement. I have an Ankarsrum but still rely on my Kitchen Aid for many things. This video was hugely helpful. I have a KitchenAid mixer that is 17 years old and has been leaking oil for the past few months. This video game me the necessary insight to handle the job. Was actually really easy! The hardest part was getting the pin out and getting the gears to properly align so the top half would seat flush against the gasket and bottom assembly.

I replaced grease in my 7 yr old model Kenmore Elite Stand mixer. Thank you very much for a great video. My mixer was leaking oil after 3 to 4 use after buying 7 years back. After that oil stopped leaking. I continued using it for about 6 yrs. It died a year ago and we bought a Kitchenaid Stand Mixer. I did not throw it away. During this pandemic I learnt a lot by going through numerous DIY videos and viewers' comments related to Stand Mixers in UA-cam including yours. However, did not find a single DIY video for my old model of Kenmore Elite Stand Mixer. Mine is a discontinued model and parts are not available. The retaining clip pliers was very useful. I bought a cheap one from eBay. It took some time to reconfigure the pliers. But I could use it and was a big help. In addition to replacing the grease (food grade grease, which I bought from eBay) I replaced the o-rings of the Planetary shaft as well as Pinion shaft o-ring. Your video was very useful. Good instructions, especially the part about turning beater gear clockwise to seat the gears. The most difficult part for me was lining up the pin, and punching it back in.

It's worth mentioning that you should remove the 2 screws holding the metal oblong ring from the top assembly to clean any old grease from it and from the unit. Also the pin that holds the planetary assembly that you punch out is a wedge pin (smaller around on one end) and if you find it's not punching out then rotate the assembly and punch from the other side. We did more clean up of the gears and checked the teeth for any damage. Great tutorial. Hope these tips help get everyone's mixer up and going.

You're welcome! I hope it does. My hubby is replacing the grease in mine today lol. A woman needs her tools to work he said. He's #1 in my book lol. I also wanted to mention we didn't have a rivet holding the gasket in place so it was easy off & clean. Might just be a difference in the year models. It's easy enough that anyone can do this repair and NOT replace their mixer.
Mine doesnt have that type of wedge pin. It has like a head on both ends, how do i get that out? Same for the base hinge. I cant take them out 😢

Really good video. Replacing the grease was a breeze! My wife noticed our 25+ year old mixer was seeping oil & stopped using it. She wanted a silver one to match our newly remodeled kitchen. I saved this one, thinking it might be a fun weekend project to change the grease. 6 months later, I watched this video and decided to finally tackle it. It seems to be working fine, other than it seems noisy (gears) at lower speeds. We gave it to my wife’s sister, whom has never owned one. Im only out $14 for a jar of grease.
Thanks for the video! My mixer was given to me, when I used it for the first time oil was leaking everywhere! I had never had a kitchen aid so I was thinking it was a goner but with your video I was able to fix it took me a little while but was fairly easy with your help. There was so much grease and was completely separated.

Wonderful! Thank you for the very helpful, easy to follow video! Our "hot" tips include using a toothbrush (clean!) to help clean out old gunk from the gears, and a "Mr Clean Magic Eraser" to clean hardened oil on the outside of the unit.

The hardest part was to clean the toothbrush so that my wife wouldn't recognize that I had borrowed it. I was sweating that part while cleaning it. It finally came clean with a little gasoline. I haven't heard anything from her, so I think I did a good job.

Ahhhhh yes, many do not like to see oil oozing down the side:). Fortunately, it is a food based grease and can be replaced:).
@@RealWorld KitchenAid has switched to a white colored grease in recent years and when that leaks that leaks clear so people may not notice.

Great Video, great speaker, calm and precise. We experienced the same issue upon reassembly and found stepping away long enough to enjoy a (420) time out really helped. We also discovered 70% rubbing alcohol worked as a good cleaner. We suggest you recognize the potential issues using alcohol to clean but after hours getting no where we went a head and used a little to do the final clean up. Glad this video was available on UA-cam!

I love UA-cam and Google. I'm to poor just to toss out things that can be repaired also I like to fix things. I save alot of money be fixing whatever. I'm glad to have found this video. Oil was leaking from my mixer and did not know where it was coming from. I bought it from a yard sale only gave $45.00 without any attachments It was a great find and I bet they saw the oil leaking and thought it was going bad so thats why they got rid of it. The beauty bar on the top housing needs to come off too. It's held on by two screws in the back. There will be grease under it. With it off you can clean the sides of the housing and the beauty bar itself.

Excellent detailed video but question to be raised do we have to replace the grease and why I have reason to believe that no need to dismantle the whole Machine only for cleaning the grease .However, to rectify such greasy leaks only you have to remove the stainless steel ring which removed buy hammering with screw driver this design as grease collector ring , just clean it and fit back.

Nice video. BTW, the gasket you thought was "riveted" is not. That rivet is really just a location pin and you can just lift the gasket with a screwdriver. You can buy a replacement gasket.

Just have to say that was one of the best how to videos I’ve seen to date and I’ve been using UA-cam for about 7 years now, great job!
My mixer has had a very small amount leaking out, I pulled the top and the grease is still in great condition except for the small amount I’ve noticed.
Did you ever contact KitchenAid to ask about this issue? I would think the gasket in between the halves wasn’t doing its job correctly?
I noticed that I did have some seepage past the gasket. In my experience I would guess the gasket is a bit to thin to properly seal the halves.
How do you feel about that?
One last thing, what type of meds, naturally or synthetic, are you using to keep your patients so well, and your tone so calming!?! 😎
LOL - thanks for the post/feedback!:) The leakage is relatively standard as the oil separates from the grease, and the gasket struggles to retain oil/water. If you find anyone wanting to junk an old unit for leaking oil, get it:).

The Grease used in the gearbox of all quality mixers is a food based Grease, In time it separates and becomes very runny like thin oil, this will make the Gear Box Leak and the cogs will wear out , making it quite expensive to rebuild the box as well as contaminate any wheat or other food you are preparing
A little rubbing alcohol will remove the old dry grease stains.
I didn't see you apply any grease on the lower planetary gear, which I'm guessing should have a light coating. Nice job. I'll be doing the same thing shortly. Thanks.
yes, good to place grease on the lower gear as well. when i placed the top pieces on the unit, the grease packed down into the lower gear as well:).

Help! My older model Kitchenaid stand mixer that hadnt been used in years was clearly leaking oil and making a bit of a grinding noise so I carefully took it apart , cleaned and regreased it. NOW IT WONT TURN ON! Yikes. I didn't unnecessarily touch any wires (it is possible i got the overload switch wires reversed though) and what I can see of the motor and wires etc looks intact and clean. Any help and suggestions are really appreciated!!!
This is only a temporary fix. The leak is caused by a bad gasket, which allows the oil that has separated from the grease to run out. Both should be replaced, or it will continue to happen.
my gasket was/is solid. the leak occurs when the compound sits for a looooong time without use or is over used. if the gasket is bad, agreed - it should be replaced:).
Oh no I have a spare part! It's a little pin like the one we took out on purpose, any idea where it came from? Best video I found on this I was ready to buy another one

Great and helpful video. I enjoyed it but you may wanted to mention that the grease use an appliance should be food grade Grease also had a question did you not need to grease the gears on the lower assembly or did I miss you doing that... anyways helpful video thanks

No need to grease the lower gears as they are not greased from the manufacture (from what I could tell after disassembly). My mixer is back in business running great since this video - so far, so good:).

I replaced the grease ok, but could not get the gears to line up. I spent several hours but no success. Finally I placed my mixer into the garbage can and ended my frustrations. I plan on a new mixer other than KitchenAid.
LOL - I know it is frustrating but you can do it:). If you can still retrieve the mixer, please do so and try again. The gears can be a pain but they will mesh together at some point.
Hey! Thanks so much for the post. Really helpful! I'm at the part where I'm trying to line up the gears after placing the top part of the unit back on..... unfortunately I'm having a lot of trouble. It won't seem to budge. I'm using the punch to turn the shaft below - but: no dice. Advice?
Sorry for the delay ... did you figure it out?:) The gears will fit back together but you may need to lift off, rotate the gears slightly, and try again. This can be a bit frustrating but you will get through it:).
RealWorld Hey! Thanks so much for replying :) I *did* get it, thank you! Realized the problem: the bottom piece, the shaft that you have to rotate, was not pulled down all the way! So it wasn't rotating the gears at all. Didn't realize *that* was the problem until I adjusted it, turned it and saw the gears move!! Then it was a breeze. Thanks again for the video!!

Not exactly certain of your challenge:). Were you able to find a solution? Sometimes the gears are tough to fit back together. If this happens, you may need to move the gears slightly and try again.

Proper lubrication of all gears is required. In this video he does not relube the lower planetary gears. This is essential for your gears to last.
while it does not hurt, it is not required:). i posted this video 7yrs ago and my mixer is running strong:).
@@RealWorld If It greased from the factory, its probably a good idea to remove and replace the grease in the planetary.
@@RealWorld Well nothing is required. If you choose to do a perfunctory job that is you right. However, if the manufacturer greased the planetary gears at assembly, then the planetary gears should be cleaned and grease during maintenance.
I got stuck at trying to get the planetary pin out. Apparently sometimes they just don't move. My neighbor Dan lent me a heat gun which he swears by for dislodging reluctant pins. A couple minutes of heat and a few good taps with a pin punch and it came out as in this video. I didn't try, but maybe even a hair drier would work. Heat guns are relatively inexpensive ($15) so at worst its still better than sending the machine for servicing or buying a new one.
Great tip David ... a bit of heat may help a stuck pin.
Really interesting! What would cause oil like that to just disintegrate? Over heating the machine?
Two things will cause oil to separate from grease ... 1) long periods of inactivity 2) lots of use. Thankfully, the repair is not too bad:).
@@RealWorld There's a third possibility - we have five KA Mixers. One from the late '40s, one from 1977, one from 1992 and a KA45 from sometime after 1962 and before the 1980s. The fifth, a KSM500PSOB has this problem and none of the others do. I think we all know by now that Whirlpool experimented with cheapening the KA mixers. The plastic gears which failed whipping meringue. The speed control rheostats which failed and took the rest of the electronics with them, etc.
The 'grease' in our KSM500PSOB phase separated when I was making Christmas cookies shortly after I got it.

I want to make my own attachment. I need the
attachment inlet / piece that the attachment rod connect to to be
manufactured. Any advice?
i do not have any recommendation for fabricating that piece, however I like you idea!:)
We were able to regrease the KitchenAid mixture except for the last procedure. After the housing is all reattached you need to reatthach the mechanism with the pin where the beater attaches. The problem we have is that the rod that you put the pin through keeps going inside the the housing about a quarter inch or less. This prevents the line up of the holes so the pin can be reincerted. Help!
Hello and I am hear to help - hopefully!:) Are you still having issues? I see a few hours have passed since your post. To ensure we are on the same page - you are saying the rod is pushed up into the housing a 1/4 or so prevent the holes from aligning? Typical alignment issues are left to right and not up and down:). If you are experiencing up and down issues, I suspect the bottom housing and/or gears are not seated correctly. If this is the case, you might consider disassembling the unit and ensuring everything is seated correctly ... this can be a slight pain but you can do it:). You may need to wiggle and jiggle the gears, rod, and/or housing.
That's not a rivet holding the gasket on it's just a locating pin to help keep it in place when you put it back together. The gasket is probably just sticking slightly from all that old oil. And on another note KitchenAid has switch to a white grease in recent years. That gasket is made of cardboard.

Great instructions. I couldn't get the pin out, though, so I'm at a standstill. I tried spraying it with WD-40 and it still won't budge. I actually chewed it up a bit trying.
The pin can be tough:). Have you tried a nail punch/setter (providing you have one)? You might try is a nail and hammer - tap the nail into the pin using the hammer. This might force the pin the out.
I tried the punch and a nail. Got desperate and tried to drill it out. Absolutely won't move. I think I've reached the point where I need to try a repair place.

Are you able to remove the gasket ? Cause I think it should be replaced if possible. What are your thoughts?
providing the gasket is not damaged (torn, etc.), you should not need to replace it :)
I recently inherited my mother's 40 year old, RARELY USED, Model K5-A KitchenAid mixer. It is not leaking oil but makes a horrific whining noise when I start the mixer and then quiets. I am thinking that the grease is the problem. The old grease has separated or that the Gear-worm is not greased enough. Can you advise me as where to start? Your video is very helpful and makes me think that I can do this myself. I live in rural Montana and repair work is usually self inflicted. . I really appreciate your advice! Thank you,

Hello Leighanne - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post:). I agree - take a closer look at the gears. The sound you hear tells me the gears are moving which is a good sign:). The question is - why so loud. This might be caused by the lack of grease on the gears. I suggest removing the top housing and inspect the gears. Perhaps the grease is dried out given the age.
Thank you for your reply. I am going to order some gear grease and them attempt to replace. I think cracking this thing open is going to be a one shot deal and I might as well replace the grease at that time. I will keep you posted as to my success! Thanks you again!
Finally, I am attempting to work on the mixer. Oil leakage was not the problem but whining....well, the grease is tan and the consistency of old toothpaste ! You nailed the diagnosis with dried out due to age. NO wonder it was making such a racket there is no grease anywhere near the gears. It is a hollowed out hole of thick paste no way resembling grease. I am very appreciative of you video and have watched it several times while working on this beast.

Hello Ann - sorry to hear the pin is being difficult:). If you have a nail setter or small philips screwdriver, grab a hammer and tap firm on the pin. If the pin has never been removed, I suspect it is frozen in the hole to some extent. A hard sharp tap should break it free IMO.
@@RealWorld Yes, I had the same problem. With some VERY strong "taps" I finally got the pin to drop! Hope it goes back in easier!
@Rukevbe I had the same problem. You need to heat the pin. You can try a hair dryer for a few minutes. If that doesn't do it you'll need a heat gun (Amazon ($15). I used my neighbor's heat gun for 2 minutes and that did the trick. The pin came out with a few hits on a punch.

Hi Brian - great question:). It all started with my personal KitchenAid. After little use over a couple of years, I notice an oil seeping from the bottom cap/ring. Since these mixers are not cheap in my opinion, I was bound and determined to get more life from it. I am a technical, inquisitive person and decided to carefully disassemble the unit. I conducted additional research and identified the root cause (oil separated from the original grease). After removing, cleaning, and packing new grease into the gears, I was back in business!:) Many people in our society tend to throw-away various broken items before taking a closer look to determine if a simple repair could be the answer ... they may not want to spend the time to fix/repair and have money to buy again, etc. Nonetheless, if you have the patients to learn, you can salvage items back to like-new condition:). Everything in life requires maintenance to some extent and a little bit can go a long way:).

After replacing the nylon gear the mixer is making a horrible noise. It wasn't making that noise before the gear stripped. what could possibly be wrong and how do i fix it?
Hmmmm ... I suspect the noise is the result of the gears being misaligned. I suggest taking a closer look at all the gears to ensure a proper fit.
I am stuck at 5:50 on the timer. I can't punch out the pin. I am using a metal punch and hammer. Is there a right side and a wrong side to hit?
either side will work ... put some muscle in it and it should break free:).
Sally, I had the same problem. My neighbor told me to try his heat gun. I warmed the pin for about 2 minutes and it came right out. Maybe a hair dryer will work, but if not a heat gun costs $15 on Amazon. Good luck!
