This is a very straightforward video, and I don't see how anyone is giving it a thumbs down. Although it's messy, this is a rather simple fix, which is impressive. I watched this video prior to buying a different model Kitchenaid mixer, just to verify that they are in fact repairable, and I'm glad I did. Nice work, and thanks for taking the time to get your hands all greasy for the knowledge gained for the rest of us.
THANK YOU! I broke the worm gear last week when the bowl wasn't secured. Got a gear from amazon. Took my phone in the kitchen with me and used this video to get it back and working again. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Took about maybe 45 minutes including cleaning up all the grease that got everywhere. This video was a lifesaver!
Thanks. Great video. Replaced worm gear easily. Didn't even need punches. Two nails with the point snipped off did the job. One point if you've got KSM45 -240 volt, there's a little electric board attaching the motor part (top), to the tower (lower). Just 2 extra screws, but don't be surprised at 3:20 if the motor doesn't release cleanly!
This video is great for two reasons: 1. Watching this video prevented me from making several mistakes which would have happened had I just began disassembling my mixer to figure out what the problem is. 2. This video also makes it clear that this is a repair I can do and I don't need to take my mixer to a repair shop. Thanks.
Great video! Instead of replacing just the worm gear, I ordered and replaced the whole worm gear assembly. The cost was less than $10 and this way I didn't have to worry with knocking out the worm gear pin. Just remove the 3 phillips head screws, pull out the old assembly and replace with the new one. Works as good as new now. Thanks again!
+Greg Grubb After reading your comment, I went to the eReplacementParts.com website and sure enough, the cost of the whole worm gear assembly is the same as the cost of just the worm gear. Someone else asked why that was, but they didn't answer specifically- just suggested that if they had to replace it, they would replace the whole thing. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
This video saved me hundreds of dollars! I am a 60 year old woman and not at all mechanically inclined. Still, I was able to repair my quarter-century-old KitchenAid mixer after it stopped spinning during a marathon cookie dough endeavor. Thank you for your simple, clear instructions! I was not able to budge the inside roll pin though (I beat it to death, I think) and ended up buying the whole tower for a few dollars more. Voila! It works like new!
My new worm gear arrived today (only cost 4.50 euros); I reviewed the video one more time and was easily able to replace my worm gear in less than 5 minutes. It works like new! Thanks again.
Great Video! I replaced the worm gear for cost of $6.20! Kitchen Aid estimated 50 to 200 repair and since my machine was 20 years old they didn't think it would be worth it and best I bought a new one. Followed the great step by step instructions in video and it works! So happy!!! thank you!
Thank you so much! We bought our mixer brand new and it leaked hot grease right from the start. We should have taken it in for warranty, but we figured we would have paid for a new mixer by the time we paid for shipping and the cost of repairs (they might have covered, but what's done is done). So there it sat in the kitchen unused for about 5 years. I felt like today was the day to fix it. So the biggest mystery to me was how to take it apart. Thankfully I ran across this video, which just so happened to be the first video I came across. From just watching a couple of minutes of your video I was able to take it apart and fix it! All I had to do was clean the gasket and I added some form-a-gasket just for good measure, put it all back together and it's literally a brand new mixer now! Thanks again for such an informative video!
anyone trying to remove the first outside dowel pin, you need to lay the mixer on its side, put a 2x4 on the the under side of the dowel pin along the white body to support it, then wack it HARD several times with a punch and hammer, and it will come loose. The purpose of the 2x4 is so you don't transfer your entire hammer force to the axle. We don't want a broken center axle.
Thank you for the video. Everything is back together and working great. A couple points I have an older KSM5DGR, with a fixed motor and a movable bowl. You have to remove the four Philips #3 or #4 screws holding the head assembly from the stand to get at the two "hidden" screws underneath. Thirteen screws in all. There's also a "head gasket" between the upper motor assembly and the lower gear assembly. It only goes in one way; so that's not a problem. Just don't forget to put it back. (Yeah, I forgot and had to tear everything apart again). As for roll pin on the worm gear, it was a pain the the butt. I eventually used the next smaller punch in my set, and a bunched up shop towel to help hold it in place. It finally came out. You just have to keep at it.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Though I did purchase a replacement mixer in case this was not my issue, I now have two working mixers. Ordered the worm gear on Amazon and it was here in two days. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Mark, thank you so much! I was quoted over £150(nearly $200) but I managed to fix it myself. My worm gear was in pieces after an accident so I changed the grease as it had pieces of plastic in it! Can't thank you enough.
Wouldn't have tried this without this video. We pulled out as many screws as we could, couldn't move anything and about gave up until we found this. Thank you!!
This video was EXCELLENT!! Thank you VERY MUCH!!... I completed the repair this afternoon. All by myself!... I am a very satisfied middle-aged woman. I know my family will be very satisfied when I get back to baking now. I had not read the comments here before I completed the repair, and had ordered a can of grease, because I was worried that the existing grease would have bits of the old shredded gear in it and that would lead to a future jam up.. Thank you for sparing me expense and hassles!!!
Great video. I also had a very hard time removing the planetary roll pin. Finally got it done by using a drill with small metal bit to make a shallow hole in the top of pin. My pin punch then held in the hole without slipping, and I was able to give it a few strong whacks with the hammer. Came right out. A little cosmetic damage but the pin was still usable. Thanks for the instructions!!!
Thank you for this video!! I am super excited to say that our mixer now works again, which has made my wife very happy!! Your instructions and camera shots were superb and very easy to follow along. Thank you!
Piece of cake. Your step by step vedio and instructions are really helpfull. Anyone can do it. REALLY REALLY like it. Just replaced my 1 year KitchenAid mixer worm gear in 30 minutes. Ordered the gear from eBay. Working so far pretty well. God bless you and keep up the good work. Thanks again
@nauticalPrincess123 It is not necessary to replace the grease just to fix the problem of the mixer not spinning. However, it does make sense to replace the grease just for the sake of already being inside the gear housing. No harm in anticipating another repair down the road and taking care of them both at the same time. Great question and thanks for watching!
This video saved me hundreds of dollars! I am a 60 year old woman and not at all mechanically skilled. Still, I repaired my quarter-century-old KitchenAid mixer after it stopped spinning during a marathon cookie dough endeavor. Thank you for your simple, clear instructions and quick delivery on parts! Neither I nor my coworkers were unable to budge the inside roll pin (we finally beat it to death, I think) and ended up buying the whole tower for a few dollars more. Voila! Works like new!
What a great video! I liked it especially you took a time to show step by step of the reassembling. Most shows tend to say, "that's it, you put them back in reverse order" or something and leave us like we will never encounter any problem. The camera work of the show is excellent. The guy (Mark?) spoke very clearly, and not condescending to the audience. The best tutorial show ever!!
The video was really easy to follow and is definitely going to help a lot of people having problems with their mixer. Thanks for the help! Sharing is caring.
The step-by-step instructions gave me the confidence to try this repair on my own. It worked! My one recommendation: Please add a segment at the beginning of the video telling viewers what tools they need.
Mark, Thanks so much for this video. I have used it twice to repair my wife's mixer (or mix-mixer as our son calls it). I really appreciate the clear directions for making the repair. I have already recommended this tutorial to family members in case they ever need to fix their mixers. Again, thank you! This is a great video!
I had to replace the speed lever, which required the disassembly shown in this video. Never in a million years would I have been able to figure it out on my own. This saved me a ton of aggravation. One thing that was missing from the re-assembly section (or maybe I missed it) was that you need to be careful of the location of the electrical wires when you replace the top housing. Once I got mine screwed down tight, I discovered that one if the wires was pinched between the housing and the main unit and I needed to to loosen the screws to free it. Thanks so much for this video.
Even though my mixer was not the kind where the head tilts back (it's stationary), your instructions saved me big bucks. Thanks! The wife is happy again.
Absolutely fantastic. This video helped us identify the part we needed, ordered for eReplacement Parts, and then watched again to install. My mixer is like new again. Awesome. Happy wife, happy life.
Thanks for a clear instructions in images and words. My problem turned out to be the pin for the worm gear. The pin was loose in the tower area and bent into a boomerang shape. It must have worked loose and hit the tower to bend it and knock it loose from the assembly. No problem, I just ordered a new pin and followed the reassembly instruction. You saved me a lot of money and I thank you for that.
@aldemar868890 Very good question. Any gear breaking in the gear housing will cause a mixer to stop spinning. If the worm gear is broken it will be obvious with a brief inspection. There will be heavy wear on the gear teeth or teeth missing. We did the video on the worm gear because it's the gear that breaks first most of the time. If your worm gear looks good, you'll want inspect all the other gears until you find the one that failed and replace it. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
thank you!!!! i was given a free professional kitchenaid, and it was just very dirty (it was left in a bug infested house, so the owner knew it had bug parts inside) and needed a complete clean out to be used. your detailed instructions will help me attain this! THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!
I was able to fix my wife's Kitchenaid thanks to this video, thank you so much for taking the time to make it. It's up and running now, the gear was totally wrecked.
Absolutely great instructions how to fix a kitchen aid that isnt spinning. I wouldn't consider myself as the guy who fixes things at home, but with the help of this video I managed to kitchenaid in 35 minutes (much less time than it would have taken to take it a repair man).
Thank you very much for a very helpful video and the good service from your parts department. I just purchased and replaced the entire worm gear assembly and it was easy to replace and now my wife thinks I'm some sort of mechanical whiz, so that's worth something too. Thanks again !
@islaguy100 and @lordvampir0 Long answer: The speeds breaking on a KitchenAid mixer usually means that its control plate either needs to be adjusted or replaced. Replacing one isn't too tricky, but adjusting it can be, and putting a new one in also requires an adjustment. More importantly, correctly adjusting the speed on a KA mixer requires a special calibration tool normally only supplied to authorized service centers.
Your demonstration of repairing the Kitchenaid mixer was excellent, The explanation of each stage was easily understood and an excellent help to me Thank you sincerely
I saw this video. Ordered the gear from ebay. Tonight I started the repair following this video. The gear inside looked alright. But looking for the rollpin. It wasn't there. So i dug in to the grease and found a bent pin. Straightenend it out and put it in. FIXED. Thanks Guys.
I am thrilled in finding and watching this video! I have been unable to use my Kitchen Aid for while now as it just kind of "bumps and grinds" when on...I cannot wait to try and repair it myself! Thanks so much!
This is an awesome video! Thank you!! I used it to fix a Kitchenaide KSM5 but used the same parts. Took me less than a half hour with your instructions
Mark, the video was excellent, and my mixer is working perfectly. It was my fault that the worm gear failed as I left the additional mixing attachments in the mixer for storage. I accidentally turned it on so the blade got jammed in the bowl with the additional parts and the worm gear failed, exactly as it was designed to avoid more serious damage to the mixer. We love the mixer, and your video got us up and running in 20min.
Thank you so much for posting this video! Your instructions were very clear and precise. I followed your instructions step by step and was able to replace the gear worm in a matter of 30 minutes. This video was VERY helpful. I highly recommend anyone to use it! :-)
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I knew I could save my wife's beloved mixer if I could just figure out how to get the cover off. You gave me that and more. Worm gear has 4 or 5 worn teeth, the control is cracked and the brushes are worn. I ordered all the parts I needed from eReplacement part and will check back in when I have it working again.
THANK YOU! I just paid over $100 to have someone else fix my mixer, and I use it so much that I know it will need repair in another year or two. FANTASTIC!
Thanks Mark, you saved me a lot of money. My mum, dad and I all worked together to fix this and it was a fun project. We were slightly discombobulated to find a spare cog fell when removing the housing, but soon worked out it was the attachment cog and put it back in. Getting the pins out and in again took a bit more effort that it seems on the video. But all in all, very smooth, thanks to your clear and steady instructions. Thanks again Kelly and family, Canterbury, UK.
thank you so much very helpful. i just took apart my kitchenaid and thought the problem was it didnt have enough grease i changed the grease and it still didnt work so now i know what the problem is you saved me time ty!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! You just saved me $300.00. My mixer is the style that lifts the bowl. With one additional step of taking off the stand to access 2 hidden screws, I was able to do this myself in less than 2 hours. You guys are awesome!
Thanks for this video! I used it for disassembly/reassembly instructions when my speed lever wouldn't stay in the off position (turns out the screw that holds the lever was loose. Tightened that and it's fine now. Funny I couldn't seem to find that fix anywhere on the internet!). Actually doing it was more fiddly than the pro here but we managed to finagle it. Tip for the really stuck pin: my husband clamped the mixer to the counter and just whaled on it with the hammer and punch. It just takes persistence and good clamps - two at least - (otherwise the force goes into shifting the mixer around). The punch does tend to slip off the pin; I could only get it to stay square when gripping it in my fist instead of a pincer grip. In any case, we definitely wouldn't have figured out the intricacies without your help, thank you.
Amber Sutton we had that problem with the pins initially then tried it from the other side and the pin came right out...turns out they're designed that way...tapered on one end vs. the other.
Great video. My wife made some dough and the dough magically climbed up into the planetary housing. There was no obvious way to clean things out so I decided to take it apart (I take everything apart you know). Your video was VERY helpful. Even though I didn't get into the real guts of the machine, only the planetary head, I really appreciated having your video as a guide. Thank you so much for your good guidance and instructions.
I cannot thank you enough. your step-by-step guidance worked perfectly and by the way, I always buy my parts at replacements.com. That is not a plug for your company. It is the absolute truth and I can always find what I need. Thanks again!
Thank you! Your video saved my life: I've just broken my wife's favorite kitchen toy, but now I know I can fix it. I suspected the worm gear is broken, but now I'm 99% sure. And, btw, congratulations for the excellent video and clear explanations!
I'm contemplating buying a kitchenaid mixer and I found your video very interesting and reassuring for it shows these machines can be maintained and repaired quite easily so that you can keep it longer than all that Chinese c**p. Thanks for your work !
Thank you so much for posting this! It would have cost me over $140 to have mine fixed by sending it to KitchenAid. I'm so glad that I can fix it myself. Hugs!!!!
Thanks for your question! The video that will be of the most help to you is, "How to Replace the Brushes on a KitchenAid Stand Mixer". Using a flashlight you will be able to see where the cut out on the brush needs to go.
Thank You So Much for taking the time to make this tutorial.. your very kind..my mixer isn't broke have had it over 17 yrs. knock on wood.. I do use it often if not daily.. nice to know what to look for as a common repair may be coming my way someday..
Great video, I almost cried when it stopped working. Found the replacement part on eBay and with the help of your tutorial 48hrs after it broke it's now back working. :D
Thank you so much for posting this outstanding video - i have used it twice to fix our mixer and my mother in law's mixer. I will say that i find a good tip is to punch in the pin BEFORE putting the gear into the assembly just to loosen up the hole a bit - then take it out and do it the way outlined in this video. Otherwise i was unable to get the pin into the new gear... for some reason kitchenaid thought a rounded punch pin was a good idea rather than a flat one. thanks again!
disassemble your mixer before you order parts. Your worm gear may be ok. My worm gear was fine, but the dowel pin holding it in disappeared. That pin was part # WP9705444. Instead of ordering a pin with ripoff shipping prices, I just used a broken drill bit, cut it down to size, used a few strands of telephone cable copper wire as shims, and tapped the drill bit into the hole for a snug fit. Mixer is working again.
Very helpful. I was actually trying to fix the ON/SPEED switch. It would not stay on the OFF position. HELPFUL NOTE ALERT: I was very glad to see that the screw that holds the slider in place was a smidge loose and was allowing the spring action to pull the slider back to the ON position. I tightened the screw about 1/2 to 3/4 turn and vuala! problem solved! Thanks again for a very clear and easy to follow video.
Excellent step by step video that gave me the knowledge to re and re the ratched worm gear. This would have cost a mint in the repair shop! Thanks for the video! One thing that wasn't mentioned is you do need to disconnect a pair of wires in the back to fully disconnect the lid. I just made sure they went back in the same place from where they came from.
Brilliant video, clear and helpful - you just saved me £350 on a heavy duty professional mixer, as the parts and process are the same! Thank you very much
This video was a lifesaver! Thank you for putting it together and being so detailed. I was able to fix my wife's mixer in about and hour after obtaining the part and the grease. We thought the mixer was a gonner until I saw this. Thanks again! I replaced the grease inside the mixer because what was in there didn't look very good and it wasn't covering the gears very well.
Thanks for sharing your talent in this clear and professional video. Bought a KSM150 yesterday and already regret the cheap parts/gears noise. At least, thanks to you, I know how to take care about it.
This video was excellent! Followed the step by step instructions and it took just half an hour, clear and easy to follow, my mixer is fully functional again! Thankyou
This video saved me hundreds of dollars! I am a 60 year old woman and not at all mechanically skilled. Thanks for this excellent video. Especially for not saying" just do the steps in reverse order to reassemble".

Got my part in the mail today; fixed it this evening. Took about an hour, because I was showing my son how to do it. Thanks so much!
Just used your instructions to replace the worm gear in our mixer. Thank you for the clear and easy to understand steps. Works like a charm.
Your direction is very clear. I cannot speak English clearly but I understood your direction. Thank you. Twee Columbus, Ohio
Thank you so much. With your help we fixed our Kitchen aid easyly. All the best from Germany.

huge lifesaver! i love that you answered even the smallest questions like whether the two washers are identical, etc. thank you sir, and God bless.
you are the man!! fixed my mother in laws mixer in minutes and you made me look great!

I was able to fix my wife's Kitchenaid thanks to this video, thank you so much for taking the time to make it. It's up and running now, the gear was totally wrecked.
You, sir, just saved me a lot of money and trouble! Many thanks! :)
Fabulous video. Thought I needed a new mixer but fixed it for about $8. Thank you so much!!!
Hey there. Thanks much for the excellent video. I just finished fixing my mixer! Oh happy days! Laura
This is an awesome video! Thank you!! I used it to fix a Kitchenaide KSM5 but used the same parts. Took me less than a half hour with your instructions
Fantastic! The pin on the rotary was very hard for me to punch out. But the rest was easy peasy. Thank you. You saved my Artisan 5 qt mixer.
Thanks, just saved me lots of money not having to send it away for repair. excellent video
FANTASTIC!
Nicely done, they are messy to work on but the real experience that can't be shared over the internet it the lovely sweet smelling food grade grease:)
Thank you very much for this Kithenaid saver movie.
We fixed it and it is such a rewarding feeling, so thanks again.
Thanks again Kelly and family, Canterbury, UK.
thank you so much very helpful. i just took apart my kitchenaid and thought the problem was it didnt have enough grease i changed the grease and it still didnt work so now i know what the problem is
you saved me time ty!!!
Amber Sutton we had that problem with the pins initially then tried it from the other side and the pin came right out...turns out they're designed that way...tapered on one end vs. the other.
I feel like I must have tried that too, but both sides were just as stuck. The pin looked pretty straight. Maybe we have different models?
Excellent instructions! I wouldn't have figured it out in a million years!
Amazing. I fixed my mixer - just the way you described. This video is fantastic - thanks from a very happy baker.
Nice repair job Mark. Clear, no un-necessary movements, and clear instructions. Good Job.
Thanks for the video. Turned a $25 craigslist find into my new kitchen centerpiece. Keep them coming
without any problems I could fix my KitchenAid. Many thanks for this great video.
Greetings from Germany:D
One of the very best instructional videos I have ever seen. The gear isn't my problem, but I can see how to get to what I need to do. Good job!
I'm contemplating buying a kitchenaid mixer and I found your video very interesting and reassuring for it shows these machines can be maintained and repaired quite easily so that you can keep it longer than all that Chinese c**p. Thanks for your work !
Great video. I managed to fix my mixer in one morning. Saved me a lot of money. Thank you!
Excellent video. The best i've seen with so much detail verbally and video. Thank you.
Phenomenal video!helped immensely other than the fact my kitchen aid had these square shaped screws but it was a perfect fix!thank you
Thank You So Much for taking the time to make this tutorial.. your very kind..my mixer isn't broke have had it over 17 yrs. knock on wood.. I do use it often if not daily.. nice to know what to look for as a common repair may be coming my way someday..
@frankeric11 Glad our video helped. Thank you for the advise as well, I am sure that many viewers will find it helpful!
-Mark
Great video, I almost cried when it stopped working. Found the replacement part on eBay and with the help of your tutorial 48hrs after it broke it's now back working. :D
I just acquired a Kitchenaide stand mixer and the information on adjusting the blade was helpful.
This was super helpful! Being able to see all of the parts and steps made it very easy to understand the process. Thank you!
Very helpful.
I was actually trying to fix the ON/SPEED switch. It would not stay on the OFF position.
HELPFUL NOTE ALERT:
I was very glad to see that the screw that holds the slider in place was a smidge loose and was allowing the spring action to pull the slider back to the ON position.
I tightened the screw about 1/2 to 3/4 turn and vuala! problem solved!
Thanks again for a very clear and easy to follow video.
very high production quality on this video -- it was so good, it was soothing & informative
You are the best one,Thank you very much ,I fixed my mixer, saved 399$.
Brilliant video, clear and helpful - you just saved me £350 on a heavy duty professional mixer, as the parts and process are the same! Thank you very much
Really great detailed instructions... I like the way you move along, but yet explain everything as you go. Great style of teaching...
Thankyou
the perfect vid, explained very clearly at every stage, BRILLIANT, mick from uk
This video saved me hundreds of dollars! I am a 60 year old woman and not at all mechanically skilled. Still, I was able to repair my quarter-century-old KitchenAid mixer after it stopped spinning during a marathon cookie dough endeavor. Thank you for your simple, clear instructions and quick delivery on parts! I was unable to budge the inside roll pin (I finally beat it to death, I think) and ended up buying the whole tower for a few dollars more. Voila! It works like new! Yay!!!!
Great video. Saved myself buying a new mixer and cost 10 bucks for the worm gear. Thanks.
