It's not that many people dead. The devastation is unreal. Chuck Edwards and Tillis are absolute failures of leaders and I want to see them impeached for their shilling of FEMA while their constituents were begging them to do something about this mass civil rights violation. But there's no way the death toll was that high. I think most of the dead happened here in the Asheville area and most of those are homeless. They don't have to update the official tolls as long as they don't identify the remains and notify next of kin. The mayor of Asheville implemented a policy of driving the homeless out of the city and into those wooded flood plain areas along the rivers. She had them removed from the city before the storm. That's where they were camped when the storm hit. +70 foot surge swept them out. One of them I had been helping was not even able to speak when I caught up to her about four days later. I could clearly see she was swept into that current. I don't know how she survived. I bought her new clothes. She gave up on the side of the road in Hooper's Creek. A difficult case before the storm, but it's probably hopeless now after what this government did to her. My understanding also is that NCDOT ordered those construction crews to simply cover over those debris piles along the rivers when rebuilding the roads. That's where the remains are located. They are actively trying to cover up the remains to keep the body counts low. I know a bit about how the government was supposed to respond and a lot of people in government technically could go to trial for this.

If you don't have a mortgage it won't matter other than if it happens again you will be self insured. Look up other disasters like Hawaii, California and Florida to get a better understanding of what to expect from FEMA.
