One thing I dislike about bjj coming from a different MA is the ability to just pull guard or sit down so long as you have even the slightest of grips.

I think bbj is only good for a back up art when you realize you can't beat a striker or trapping art . Their are better ranges for combat than on the ground . Shit let's see that bbj take down a Judo practitoner . Which Japanese Jujitsu was better for combat due to all fighting ranges are involved. Kicking , throwing puching, trapping and grappling for a complete system . Me personally I like killing art's better than sport fighting arts . They all have their places . But we all need what's going to benefit us personally . I train in poison hand's art . And I love Kali ! I say it's a better self defense art . Most combative situations ain't on mats . Let's see that cokey kid slide his back side on concrete or asphalt . It's a game changer I tell ya .

I used to run a bjj club at a local university. Occasionally the wrestling club would come in and train. After sparring at the end of class, a few of the students came up to me very discouraged regarding their rolls with the wrestlers. I had to tell them, you have been training for 6 months, they've been wrestling for bare minimum 4 years. Just because the ruleset is different doesn't mean the techniques don't work. Next time you roll with them and they get you with a reversal, pin, etc pick their brain about the technique. I do it, and most wrestlers will do the same if you catch them with something. At the end of the day grappling is grappling rule sets change small aspects but we can learn from each other to become better grapplers.

Having gone through many bjj (traditional jujitsu books are hard to find) wrestling and sambo books ( looking at throws here) sambo had the best coverage for standing, clinch, and ground grappling. Sakaraba is still my hero though. The gracie hunter/killer. Legend

But when it’s time to compete and I see a dude who’s built like a tank, with cauliflower ear, and hes wearing a wrestling t shirt, I usually always pull guard. My thought process is hes obviously the better wrestler, so why lose points immediately by letting him wrestle. Id rather pull half guard and start working my game, than get double legged and be behind on points from the start.

As a wrestler and a judoka bjj can be so frustrating sometimes. I love to learn the techniques but it becomes boring whenever people realise u can wrestle and pull guard from the get go, like stand with me and you'll learn something, and when it eventually goes to the ground you can teach me something there too! I never understand why in training people don't try these difficult things, obvs comp is different and strategically you should pull guard on a wrestler, but in training, pick their brains, that's what all us wrestlers do on the ground with use, we steal your sweeps and submissions, steal our takedowns!!

Its because their soft and afraid of really getting after it. why a lot of them do ju jitsu - Its slow and mostly safe so they can fool themselves into believing they can truly fight or grapple when in all actuality they cant especially without Gi on. Not saying there aren't studs in Jujitsu, just saying that on mass (in the US) these are mostly suburban people wanting to feel like their doing something that can help them in a street fight or looking for some community. Its like Karate or Kung-fu in the 80s and 90s. Now you have 150 pounds men running around thinking size and genetics doesn't matter and they can beat Lebron James in fight, its idiotic and delusional. But because people like this have never really been in a fight and probably never will the delusion persists.

I did 16 years, the intensity of wrestling practice as compared to your average BJJ academy or gym is hard to replicate. An hour of drills followed by an hour of live wrestling 5 days a week for 4 months. Let’s not talk about “voluntary” freestyle practice then rest of the year. In my opinion, the process that has been created for wrestling as a sport allows for its dominance in most situations. Even though I just got back into Grappling 6 months ago after 20 year hiatus.. I can go the full 30 minutes of rolling because I remember the suck well. go throw up in the trashcan and get back out there.

Huge difference in training philosophy. With wrestling, at least in USA, coaches are paid by the state, not per customer. Philosophy is to make toughest team possible--doesn't matter how many people quit. In bjj, the goal is self defense for everyone, coaches/gyms need unathletic folks to stay and keep paying membership, so the practices aren't focused on fighting to the death. Also more people in bjj gym are 30-55, work real jobs and can't get injured, aren't youthful teens who don't mind injuries. Both philosophies have their merits though!

I honestly don't understand the rivalry between wrestling and BJJ. More than half of the guys I train with at the BJJ academy, including myself, are former or current wrestlers. I wrestled from 2nd grade thru high-school, had been training in Judo for 5 years before starting BJJ in 2009. But other than different rules, I never really saw BJJ and wrestling (or Judo) as different or separate things. To me, they have always been "wrestling" and "wrestling with submissions". The Judo club I trained at spent as much time on rolling, chokes, and arm submissions (Ne Waza, Shime Waza, Kansetsu/Katame Waza) as we did throws and takedowns. And when I started BJJ, with my wrestling and Judo background, I picked it up really quickly and good at it right away. There were a few things that I were unfamiliar, but for the most part, I had no problem at all holding my own on my first day. What I'm trying to say is that when it comes down to it, whether it's wrestling or BJJ, or Judo, it's all just grappling to me. 🤷‍♂️

I wrestled in highschool and recently took up BJJ. I'm a pretty fresh white belt and did my first tourney a few days ago. First round went well and was winning on points but I ended up tapping to the guillotine with a minute left. Second round went terrible, I did sloppy double leg and landed in "side control" but my opponent had the guillotine. I was a confirmed guillotine buffet.

I remember when I was training I was maybe 5-6 months into it (mma) and this wrestler came in who had probably a solid 20-25lbs of muscle over me and had no experience in BJJ and would get tapped by me even though he easily took me down. It didn’t take long at all for him to no longer get caught in submissions and started getting the better of me. Pure wrestling loses to BJJ but it doesn’t take long for wrestlers to become the dominant grapplers once they learn the submission game.
