I'm a Brown Belt in BJJ and I've been wrestling for 30 years. Robby should have been warned multiple times for stalling. He knows that, he's obviously wrestled before. You mock the first wrestler for his repeated sweep single attempts, when Malof is doing nothing. Then he locks hands when Robby is trying to prevent him from escaping. Unless you are completing a pinning combination, you are prohibited from locking hands on the mat. Multiple stall point and a technical violation gives the other kid the win over the grown-assed man. The All-American?! I'm obsessed with college wrestling and I've never seen this dude before. Name? College he competed at? I'm calling BS. Not sure why you would attempt to discount wrestling. A majority of the recent/ current best fighters in the world got their competitive start wrestling, not BJJ.

As someone who has trained in both disciplines, I think it’s really important to note that bjj IS essentially a form of wrestling. Take downs are takedowns across a multitude of martial arts, just as sprawls are, and it’s clear that Robby is very skilled in wrestling skills. Not to mention he seemed to be stalling for much of the matches as well.
Though I find this video to be a poor representation of wrestlers vs Jiu jitsu practitioners since those wrestlers were most certainly not high level, and I think that if he had some true NCAA division 1 wrestlers then the story would be very different.
Honestly I think some of the commentary is in poor taste and at times sounds very ignorant regarding wrestling which is a shame.

Remember, context is everything. This tournament took place in 2017 or 2018 with a modified rule set. One 3 minute period with both wresters returning to neutral anytime a person goes out of bounds. The weight class was 174. in 2017 One of the individuals he beat (Ben Warner, 130lbs in high school) was a Kentucky high school state champion...in 2007. Although beating him at 28 years old is impressive, it still is 10 years away from his wrestling career. I did get obsessed with this at one point because I can't stand when bold claims like this are made without context. The all-american in this video was the last individual who placed 8th at Mt. Saint Joeseph University (D3) in 2014 at 141 lbs. Im pretty sure this video was taken 2018 the year Malof got 3rd.

I Think his name is Wayne Black, I've wrestled him in D3 tournaments. He was a D3 All- American. He was definitely way more explosive and quick than what's displayed in this video. Also note this is an off season tournament where most wrestlers are not in tip top shape as they usually are. They just enter tournaments for the fun of it. Overlooking the question as to why you would want to allow bjj guys to be using submissions in a wrestling competition in the first place. The idea that a bjj black belt just destroys a wrestler and that they would have no chance is obviously false. You are literally on UA-cam where you can get instant search results to the contrary if you tried. The fact is wrestling is more about explosion, takedowns and dominant position. It is a sport with rules, if you want to change those rules to involve submissions that's fine but it already exists, its called pankration which is what wrestling schools in Greece actually practiced. If you just want a wrestler that doesn't know submissions to fight a bjj black belt, well then you should be aware that getting drilled into the concrete skull first is terrible for attempting submissions and pulling guard in the street isn't all that effective.

Cash's career college record was 3-18 at 141 lbs (30 lbs under the weight class Robby were wrestling). Something is off about this video. The only division one all-american I saw in the results was Germaine Lindsey who won the 165 lb weight class. Lindsey was an all-american at 141 (again at a much lower weight than Robby were wrestling here) in 2010, so he is 8 years removed from being at that level, but he was not even in your weight class at this tournament. I agree. The Sprawl is 101 with hip to the mat.
The wrestlers did not try a head throw or fireman's carry that is suspect on the level.
I also noticed in wrestling, top seeds like I was do leverage direction momentum and weight to our advantage. I saw neither of the wrestlers showing this with messy unequal force. SPEED and technique can and will be strength with using your opponent to carry your body weight.
Good matches, and do agree the BJJ guy had at least Greco Roman training at some point or was incorporated into their BJJ.

He’s in fantastic condition and is able to be explosive in every position.
His single leg takedown defense is pretty solid, and would work on most good wrestlers.
However, I do think it’s important to note that not having shoes on makes finishing single legs much more difficult; particularly if aren’t used to that. Kicking out with a shoe on is much different than kicking out while barefoot.
In college, we were taught to palm the heel and use your forearm against the side of the foot. It prevents people from kicking out. They’ll jack up their own knee if they try.
If you just try to tuck the ankle under your armpit (like the first JV wrestler was doing), you have a chance of losing the takedown when he kicks out.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 3 роки тому +1

@JSL sorry I’m advance for my long winded explanation...
I think you mean his left leg...because if you do a sweep single off of your right leg, with your head on the inside, it would be his left leg and your right shoulder is on his left hamstring.
Admittedly, none of the guys here really did a good job getting that far, as they didn’t cut the corner. And they never got to the point where they would transition to “shelving the leg” onto the far thigh. In this case, your left thigh. Your left hand should be palming the heel of his left foot not simply putting it under the armpit), because you might have to stand up from here.
In many ways, it’s better to finish low and on the mat like John Smith. Continue to cut the corner and secure the far ankle. Many of the kids I coached, and many BJJ guys make a classic mistake here and grab the waist. DO NOT DO THAT. He doesn’t have a wizzer if you stay low and get the far ankle. But, if you come up to the waist, you’re going for a fucking ride if you’re wrestling me. I wizzer the shit out of people who grab my waist. If also gives me the space and time to get my far ankle out of danger and face front, get a front headlock, and get behind you (take the back in BJJ).
If you stand up with it, and often you have to (when you’re losing control over the knee and hamstring and he’s now able to pressure back on your shoulder), you have to deal with a lot of issues, such as space and athleticism. But, if you’ve got your forearm against the inside of his foot (palming the heel still with your left hand), he’ll make a big mistake if he kicks out. Also, you can use your body at this point to put lateral pressure against his knee that it shelved on your far thigh.
The other arm (your right arm) should now transition to under his under the knee and lift (stand up straight when you’re as short as I am), which brings the foot that’s on the ground closer. You then use your closest foot (this case right foot) to sweep it. The preferred method is to use your foot like a hook around his ankle and essentially step on top of his foot. Then push over. If your timing is right, you’ll get some nice amplitude, but that’s not important for the finish. If you don’t let got of the heel you can control him all the way to the ground-that is if he cares about having a knee.
      I hope this helps!

Normally I enjoy your videos. Wrestled since I was six... Now 43 I often wrestle in the open age group I as well as practice BJJ (admittedly still a noob I've got a little over a year at this point) I doubt the veracity of the NCAA claims... If that wrestler made them I feel like he's lying. I'd say he may have been a highschool conference champion or regional champion level wrestler. Unless we're talking small schools I can't even see him placing at a highschool state level. Lots of stalling on the BJJ side of this that went uncalled, also some locked hands which is a no no except under specific circumstances that should have been called... As well as an illegal move the standing guillotine... In near fall conditions this can be used so long as an arm is present. However standing this should have been called by the ref... Overall there were a lot of mistakes that the ref overlooked.. that should have cost him a large number of points. These matches were won on points which is a sign of a lack of dominant wrestling... Dominant wrestlers get the pin. And the smack talk about wrestling was and is uncalled for... Instead of showing respect for another type of grappling that has different rules and also takes years of hard work to get good at... And also will wrap up joe average who doesn't know anything.... You chose to be disrespectful and rude. I hope you've grown since this video made.

One of the first things my master, who is 6th dan black belt BJJ and 2th dan Judo black belt told me when I began is : "Don't even try to fight standing with a judo guy or a wrestler". The reason is simple, those are different sports ! If you want to be better at wresling you have to wrestle ! There is no way that a BJJ black belt take down a good wrestler unless he wrestles too.

The BJJ wins the grappling match straight up but wrestling is quickly winning the MMA grappling game. Biggest weakness of wrestling is it got rid of too many submissions and slams from its catch-as-catch can origins to the point where they cant finish the fight.
