I'm a Brown Belt in BJJ and I've been wrestling for 30 years. Robby should have been warned multiple times for stalling. He knows that, he's obviously wrestled before. You mock the first wrestler for his repeated sweep single attempts, when Malof is doing nothing. Then he locks hands when Robby is trying to prevent him from escaping. Unless you are completing a pinning combination, you are prohibited from locking hands on the mat. Multiple stall point and a technical violation gives the other kid the win over the grown-assed man. The All-American?! I'm obsessed with college wrestling and I've never seen this dude before. Name? College he competed at? I'm calling BS. Not sure why you would attempt to discount wrestling. A majority of the recent/ current best fighters in the world got their competitive start wrestling, not BJJ.
None of them were competitive college wrestlers. They look like bad highschool wrestlers. But this guy narrating is a jack ass.
Respect I wrestled for 30 years myself now I coach he’s a grown man wrestling high school kids that aren’t very good None of them wrestling college they’re still in high school he Wouldn’t last two minutes with a real wrestler

I was with you up until the last partm let's all be honest here, bjj is way more effective in mma than american style wrestling is.

Very poor wrestlers and a bjj black who obviously has a long wrestling background. No decent tournament allow anything other than singlets, this is a horseshit tournament.
Don't usually comment. But this is what happens when you watch videos with "fight breakdowns" and commentary done by a kid. I doubt his bjj is even any good let alone his technical knowledge of wrestling. I'm disappointed i even have this douche a view.

Dude this video is extremely miss leading. I wrestled at a d1 school and I know for a fact any of our starters or 2nd string guys will mop the floor with this dude, even with him being extremely defensive and stalling.
You clearly haven’t seen Robby at his best. He doesn’t even try his hardest unless it’s a literal professional fight
I highly doubt it that your starters would win. I’ve done MMA my whole life that includes Wrestling and BJJ. One key difference from wrestling and BJJ is that BJJ fighters work within the guard more compared to wrestlers. So it doesn’t matter whether if a wrestlers takes a BJJ fighter down it’ll still be in the BJJ fighters advantage because of the submission.
Yeah i would hope a D1 Wrestler would be able to beat a jiu jitsu guy in a WRESTLING tournament.

@@jedidoesjiujitsu3177 please if you could get this guy Robby to agree I would love to wrestle him, half these guys were high schoolers (hopefully for their sake) and watching all this bad wrestling was very cringe. Robby had some great defense which was better than all his opponents but I would love to wrestle the guy, please let me know!
As someone who has trained in both disciplines, I think it’s really important to note that bjj IS essentially a form of wrestling. Take downs are takedowns across a multitude of martial arts, just as sprawls are, and it’s clear that Robby is very skilled in wrestling skills. Not to mention he seemed to be stalling for much of the matches as well.
Though I find this video to be a poor representation of wrestlers vs Jiu jitsu practitioners since those wrestlers were most certainly not high level, and I think that if he had some true NCAA division 1 wrestlers then the story would be very different.
Honestly I think some of the commentary is in poor taste and at times sounds very ignorant regarding wrestling which is a shame.
I honestly always thought like you. I don’t get it. I mean I didn’t train bjj but Luta livre (it’s nearly the same, just no gi) and we always Start standing, we always train wrestling and I don’t see how bjj/LL is not a Form of Wrestling. We wrestle before we go down.

Remember, context is everything. This tournament took place in 2017 or 2018 with a modified rule set. One 3 minute period with both wresters returning to neutral anytime a person goes out of bounds. The weight class was 174. in 2017 One of the individuals he beat (Ben Warner, 130lbs in high school) was a Kentucky high school state champion...in 2007. Although beating him at 28 years old is impressive, it still is 10 years away from his wrestling career. I did get obsessed with this at one point because I can't stand when bold claims like this are made without context. The all-american in this video was the last individual who placed 8th at Mt. Saint Joeseph University (D3) in 2014 at 141 lbs. Im pretty sure this video was taken 2018 the year Malof got 3rd.
I Think his name is Wayne Black, I've wrestled him in D3 tournaments. He was a D3 All- American. He was definitely way more explosive and quick than what's displayed in this video. Also note this is an off season tournament where most wrestlers are not in tip top shape as they usually are. They just enter tournaments for the fun of it. Meanwhile this Black belt has definitely been training hard. Good for him though.
Division 3 is beyond weak though. Most people don’t even care about “All American” status if it’s not Division I. Also, Kentucky state Champs wouldn’t even make it out of districts in most states cuz the wrestling there is so weak. These people have credentials. But they’re not good.
Right?! Kentucky state champ had he said Minnesota New Jersey Pennsylvania Ohio Nebraska Texas I’d of been look… oh ok Kentucky state champ come in 4th in any district in pa nj or minn
Dude would’ve been stalled out of all of these matches in a college tournament. Not that anyone he wrestled was college level
What about the all american ??
honestly i’m 130 i haven’t wrestled for 20 years i think to pin him i’d have to point him to death. take down let up, cause i give him this strong defense prob especially from bottom. the mistake these kids were making they did great exploding into shot but then they would pause and not follow through or switch to double. i would.
@@LightingLukeLTN I'd need a name and school to verify. The last kid wasn't bad but he's far off from any all American I've ever watched wrestle.
@@kylethekidable fair enough.

@@gustavomrosas4758 khabib doesn't think the same xD
@@gustavomrosas4758 That's not true, wrestling and bjj are different beasts that have different strengths and weaknesses. Overlooking the question as to why you would want to allow bjj guys to be using submissions in a wrestling competition in the first place. The idea that a bjj black belt just destroys a wrestler and that they would have no chance is obviously false. You are literally on UA-cam where you can get instant search results to the contrary if you tried. The fact is wrestling is more about explosion, takedowns and dominant position. It is a sport with rules, if you want to change those rules to involve submissions that's fine but it already exists, its called pankration which is what wrestling schools in Greece actually practiced. If you just want a wrestler that doesn't know submissions to fight a bjj black belt, well then you should be aware that getting drilled into the concrete skull first is terrible for attempting submissions and pulling guard in the street isn't all that effective.
He’s wrestling high school kids that aren’t that good bottom line

Wat a fraud!
They're college, but probably didnt wrestle in high school. That's what NCAA and all-American is from.
@@jhonthomas2899 I posted a link
The results on the tournament website show Robby finishing 3rd at 174 lbs with Tommy Cash (the first wrestler he wrestled in the video) winning the weight class. Cash's career college record was 3-18 at 141 lbs (30 lbs under the weight class Robby were wrestling). Something is off about this video. The only division one all-american I saw in the results was Germaine Lindsey who won the 165 lb weight class. Lindsey was an all-american at 141 (again at a much lower weight than Robby were wrestling here) in 2010, so he is 8 years removed from being at that level, but he was not even in your weight class at this tournament. What am I missing here?
All my years of JJ you always learn and wrestling is an incredible starting base! My son is the US heavyweight Judo Champion and JJ Champion. He started as a wrestler but threw in serious Judo & JJ and now his hands and is still injury free and going strong.

@@ralphromero744 It is condescending, especially when you consider the time it takes to be a black belt and how long the wrestlers have probably been competing. They've probably have 4-5 years. A black belt would have double that, at least.
as a wrestler, i did some BJJ at an MMA gym and it really helped my wrestling and it helped me understand momentum and how to use it against your opponent
They really do go well hand in hand wrestling is mainly top game while bjj is bottom you have the explosiveness of wrestling with the chess mentality of jiu jitsu and your basically unstoppable depending on how you flow and keep the two styles complimenting eachother and not focusing more on one than the other
I did wrestling for two years and it really did help my takedown and explosive power when I would go and practice jiu jitsu (which I’ve been doing for 17 years) I can keep up with fast people but also have really good control of people who wanna muscle it’s the best of both worlds
Robby has obviously wrestled before. In fact one might say, this proves wrestling makes him better at BJJ because every BJJ dojo I have went to… their foot and take downs are crap 💩
I agree. The Sprawl is 101 with hip to the mat.
The wrestlers did not try a head throw or fireman's carry that is suspect on the level.
I also noticed in wrestling, top seeds like I was do leverage direction momentum and weight to our advantage. I saw neither of the wrestlers showing this with messy unequal force. SPEED and technique can and will be strength with using your opponent to carry your body weight.
Good matches, and do agree the BJJ guy had at least Greco Roman training at some point or was incorporated into their BJJ.
Those aren’t very good wrestlers. He wouldn’t fare well against top NCAA wrestlers.
i know its too much but just imagine kyle dake vs this guy lol. i bet $100 for pin under 1 minute
Guy would have been stalled out off the first match in thw real world because he never even attempted a counter just sprawled and stopped.

first video of yours I've watched... I'm 37 years old, Trained international competitive fighters across different styles. I started instructing kickboxing in the military where they only knew boxing... To introduce BJJ to wrestlers I took on a national champion, he became my student and went on to train more champions. To introduce grappling to traditional karateka I walked into a Goju-kai dojo and challenged all the black belts, one year later I walked away with my black belt in Goju-kai to show them respect the way they showed me respect. I remember a day I walked into my kickboxing dojo and saw my Sensai knock down two black belts for disrespecting another style verbally at an open tournament... respect... I guess we were just a different calibre back then... but the way you disrespect these wrestlers... who you probably don't even know... along with your technical lack of knowledge... nah.

I gotta say, the first 3 wrestlers looked like scrums, hitting the same moves, trying duck-unders, not chain wrestling and not were aggressive, where did this tournament take place?

And for locking his hands when he was not performing a takedown or pin.

@@luisalberto1456 they would get literally trashed around bro.
He’s in fantastic condition and is able to be explosive in every position.
His single leg takedown defense is pretty solid, and would work on most good wrestlers.
However, I do think it’s important to note that not having shoes on makes finishing single legs much more difficult; particularly if aren’t used to that. Kicking out with a shoe on is much different than kicking out while barefoot.
In college, we were taught to palm the heel and use your forearm against the side of the foot. It prevents people from kicking out. They’ll jack up their own knee if they try.
If you just try to tuck the ankle under your armpit (like the first JV wrestler was doing), you have a chance of losing the takedown when he kicks out.
@JSL sorry I’m advance for my long winded explanation...
I think you mean his left leg...because if you do a sweep single off of your right leg, with your head on the inside, it would be his left leg and your right shoulder is on his left hamstring.
Admittedly, none of the guys here really did a good job getting that far, as they didn’t cut the corner. And they never got to the point where they would transition to “shelving the leg” onto the far thigh. In this case, your left thigh. Your left hand should be palming the heel of his left foot not simply putting it under the armpit), because you might have to stand up from here.
In many ways, it’s better to finish low and on the mat like John Smith. Continue to cut the corner and secure the far ankle. Many of the kids I coached, and many BJJ guys make a classic mistake here and grab the waist. DO NOT DO THAT. He doesn’t have a wizzer if you stay low and get the far ankle. But, if you come up to the waist, you’re going for a fucking ride if you’re wrestling me. I wizzer the shit out of people who grab my waist. If also gives me the space and time to get my far ankle out of danger and face front, get a front headlock, and get behind you (take the back in BJJ).
If you stand up with it, and often you have to (when you’re losing control over the knee and hamstring and he’s now able to pressure back on your shoulder), you have to deal with a lot of issues, such as space and athleticism. But, if you’ve got your forearm against the inside of his foot (palming the heel still with your left hand), he’ll make a big mistake if he kicks out. Also, you can use your body at this point to put lateral pressure against his knee that it shelved on your far thigh.
The other arm (your right arm) should now transition to under his under the knee and lift (stand up straight when you’re as short as I am), which brings the foot that’s on the ground closer. You then use your closest foot (this case right foot) to sweep it. The preferred method is to use your foot like a hook around his ankle and essentially step on top of his foot. Then push over. If your timing is right, you’ll get some nice amplitude, but that’s not important for the finish. If you don’t let got of the heel you can control him all the way to the ground-that is if he cares about having a knee.
I hope this helps!
@JSL maybe I’ll make a video someday

This is great my man! just got my first stripe on my white belt and find it a struggle to deal with wrestlers, especially at my age (nearing 40). Will be harassing my judo and wrestling buddies to help me work on the standup side of things for sure 🙏
What get measured gets improved! Keep it up 👍🏽
@@jedidoesjiujitsu3177 indeed! I just wish my old ass body would allow me to go hard every day 😂 I do 3 days of gi, 2 days of no gi, and an open mat a week but really need to be conscious about injuries and recovery - so glad that you have so much experience under your belt at such a young age kiddo, you’ll be a even more of a nightmare to deal with in another 7 years 🙏
Funny how your terminology changed with the last wrestler. Lol
The only good wrestler was the one in finals!
Semi-good
If that guy is an All American then I’m an olympian🤣
Labelling him a "BJJ" guy is really misleading. You can't be a good black belt in BJJ if you don't know how to wrestle. Every form of grappling is just a different form of wrestling.
True but you cant tell certain biased clowns anything sensible like such.common logic
No wrestling is just that. Wrestling. Its its own art.
You have that backwards. First, you don't need a wrestling background for BJJ. And second, grappling is the generic term.
@@krane15 I don't have it backwards. I didn't say you need to know folkstyle/freestyle or even Greco-roman wrestling to do BJJ. Don't put words in my mouth.
I just pointed out that every form of grappling involves wrestling. Do you think ancient Indian or Egyptian wrestling looked like Freestyle? No. England alone had dozens of local styles of wrestling with rule differences. You need to understand that I am not taking a modern, strictly defined ruleset for wrestling and applying it broadly.
Wrestling has always been a very broad style that is employed in every style of grappling, at least when you do it well.
I think Robby was a wrestler prior to becoming a BJJ Black Belt?
one year in 8th grade
He keeps using the single leg because honestly he is sticking to simplicity and he is pretty quick with it. The sprawl and reaction from the BJJ practitioner Is just straight up quicker and better.
Mans broke so many rules and was up against highschool kids lmaooo
At the end of the day all these wrestlers gave everything in their arsenal to prove themselves while Robby held back strangles, limb breaks, joint manipulation, cranks, and broken bones…. I wrestled 5 years trust me I learned the hard way bjj is the WAY.
I saw locking hands, and lots of stalling. Also what’s with the no shoes. Incredible advantage
Not an incredible advantage.
@@krane15 wrestle with shoes on then without. If you don’t wear shoes, single legs are easy to kick out of. Also stalling is literally illegal in more strict competitions because it makes it more difficult to score FYI.
Ummmmm.... wrestling without shoes is a huge disadvantage ok. The stability is significantly better, the traction for driving and sprawling is also extremely different. If someone being barefoot is stops your shot, your single leg is horrible and it wouldn't have mattered.
@@doubleb222able have you ever grabbed a single on someone who’s without shoes
I do wrestling and bjj and many takedowns are far easier when the opponent has shoes
@@doubleb222able listen to TJ Dillishaw on it, who I imagine is better than you seeing as he’s an all American. He says he always wrestled in wrestling shoes because it’s so much easier to wrestle without
This guy isn't pure JiuJitsu. i was a wrestler that came into JiuJitsu. I can promise you, he has trained wrestling. Nobody in my entire academy can stop my takedowns except other guys there that have wrestled.
So true my guy I've been trying to partner up every time with this wrestler. I get destroyed but it's worth it. I can defend takedown from non wrestlers so much easier now. I only have 2 stripes tho white. Wrestling is fking fun with bjj
Same. This guy has wrestled before. Also these guys were scrubs.
no disrespect to u but having experience in high school & college wrestling i got to say any experience he has as a wrestler seemed to be centered on take down defense he had 0 offense to speak of. i would put his defense at a very good high schools varsity level, & his offense was that of a 10 year old.
People in the comments. These wrestlers aren’t bad they’re just going against superior technique. Only the first guy was bad
Their high school wrestlers there very bad it’s not superior technique it’s that the other guy is more experienced and the wrestlers are not good wrestlers
This guy clearly wrestled before, you can’t tell me different. I’ve wrestled from junior high through college and I know a wrestler when I see one.
Those were all HIGH SCHOOL wrestlers going against a dude in his late 20s.
There are ELITE wrestler vs ELITE Grapplers that have “one match my style and one match yours” competitions and the dudes ALWAYS win the match of their own style.
Dude these wrestlers suck. Also this guy definitely has some wrestling experience. Good vid though.
Even if you had a good wrestler 🤼♀️. In a pure grappling match it wouldn’t help much say you do get him down expend all that energy just to get caught in a never ended spider web . I keep hearing how these wrestlers suck by experts but I bet the last guy would out wrestle 90 percent of those wrestlers in the comments
@@jamessilcox6177 I doubt that they would outwrestle the majority of people watching this video. These wrestlers aren't really good. It's an honest criticism.
We need Kyle Dake on this mat 😂
@@jamessilcox6177 that is like saying a good boxer would beat robbie in a boxing match. Most mma champs were wrestlers at some point. It's all good stuff do what you enjoy
My case in point . I’m not against wrestling . I love wrestling it’s important. But wrestlers don’t have any finishing moves . It’s important! But being good at mma it’s because you are good at mma and if a wrestler gets someone to the ground and taps them the finish has to stem from Jiu jitsu so being a good wrestler makes you just that a good wrestler
Great video. Robby has serious wrestling skills. He could have easily been a state champion in high school or contended for a NCAA championship. As a former wrestler, a lot of BJJ guys I rolled with aren't anywhere near as gifted as this guy when it comes to defending takedowns and such.
How many bjj guys at the most elite levels are also competing and winning in belgrade at the world championships in wrestling or at the Olympics? How many wrestlers are pulling double duty winning thr Olympics and winning world jiu-jitsu titles? If there is one, he's a bad man. I wish people would put all this to rest and come to the conclusion that they're different sports with little to no real outliers
Guys chill. Even if these wrestlers were pro, it still wouldn't encompass wrestling as whole. Four people is a small sample. Jedi's just commenting on what going on in the video. It's not like he made major generalization that "wrestling is bad."
love these videos jedi!!
OK guys, I got news for you. Robbie is a BJJ blackbelt, but he's also a wrestler. How do I know this? Because he comes to our amateur club to wrestle. Our coach is his wrestling trainer. He's very smart in the way he trains and learns, and adapted very quickly.
Normally I enjoy your videos. Wrestled since I was six... Now 43 I often wrestle in the open age group I as well as practice BJJ (admittedly still a noob I've got a little over a year at this point) I doubt the veracity of the NCAA claims... If that wrestler made them I feel like he's lying. I'd say he may have been a highschool conference champion or regional champion level wrestler. Unless we're talking small schools I can't even see him placing at a highschool state level. Lots of stalling on the BJJ side of this that went uncalled, also some locked hands which is a no no except under specific circumstances that should have been called... As well as an illegal move the standing guillotine... In near fall conditions this can be used so long as an arm is present. However standing this should have been called by the ref... Overall there were a lot of mistakes that the ref overlooked.. that should have cost him a large number of points. These matches were won on points which is a sign of a lack of dominant wrestling... Dominant wrestlers get the pin. And the smack talk about wrestling was and is uncalled for... Instead of showing respect for another type of grappling that has different rules and also takes years of hard work to get good at... And also will wrap up joe average who doesn't know anything.... You chose to be disrespectful and rude. I hope you've grown since this video made.
Beautiful performance by Robby
It is not the Martial Art, it is all about the fighter's skills. Yes, you have to learn and train the Martial Art but there are people with great skills.
I guess 29 MMA fighters didn’t watch this video against Khabib.
I always get a good laugh out of your comments. Besides explaining moves to the point, you make it funny as hell. Awesome job.🤣
Robby's frame was way bigger than all 4, but overall, Robby is legit.
I'm a BJJ black belt, and a good one. One of the first things my master, who is 6th dan black belt BJJ and 2th dan Judo black belt told me when I began is : "Don't even try to fight standing with a judo guy or a wrestler". The reason is simple, those are different sports ! If you want to be better at wresling you have to wrestle ! There is no way that a BJJ black belt take down a good wrestler unless he wrestles too.
You forgot to say that Robby was a wrestler before training BJJ
Bjj Adult black belt beats teenagers with limited skill
There’s a reason why most champions come from wrestling background.
So this is a 30 year old black belt competing in a summer wrestling tournament designed for HS wrestlers.
The age bracket he's in is probably the open bracket.
High school level wrestled against someone whose been studied bjj for over ten years
Me being a wrestler has honestly helped me in many of my jujitsu matches but yeah black belt vs kids is basically this
Guy who has trained for around 20 yrs agains kids wrestling in highschool
Lost it at “Human Fireball” 😂
So an adult bjj black belt goes against some high schoolers. Wow impressive
Great video man. Thanks for making it.
The BJJ wins the grappling match straight up but wrestling is quickly winning the MMA grappling game. Biggest weakness of wrestling is it got rid of too many submissions and slams from its catch-as-catch can origins to the point where they cant finish the fight.
This is the equivalent of my son, who is a 2x high school state champ going into his jr year, wrestling at a middle school tournament and taking first.
I would like the see the guy commentating enter a wrestling tournament! He seems to know it all, I can guarantee he ain't no "ROBBY"!
Damn. That was tight. Dominant Performance. Dude probably smashed one of the wrestling groupees that night. She like "sooo what's jiu Jitsu"
Haha
They're high schoolers. They don't have groupies and if they did... I think that might be illegal.
