I like how you repair small engines the exact opposite way of me. I don't clean anything until I know it's mechanically sound. I've cleaned up too much non repairable junk in my life lol
You need an ultrasonic cleaner for your carb parts. Must have bench tool for these compact engines that operate in corrosive environment. 😊 After breaking the pistons free with Marvel Mystery, put 1-2 tablespoons of foam air filter oil into each piston. That oil is high viscosity and will "stick" to your rings and cylinder walls until the rings free up. That will fix your compression problem.
I was told along time ago to put a bit of seafoam in every tank (for these small engines). Its basically kept my fuel problems to a minimum. I run high octane non ethanol with performance oil for 2 strokes, and non ethanol for 4 strokes with frequent oil changes and things work great. Also an Italian tune up (running engine full throttle and running it regularly) will do wonders, they like to work
We had a 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke go into salt water at wide open throttle and it actually ran better than ever after we fished it out and changed the oil. There was a dead spot in the throttle before but dropping it in the sea at full throttle apparently cleared out the carbs. Great video, thanks.
When it comes to corroded parts, we (here in Germany) have a method to get it all shiny and clean again, it's basically sandblasting but with walnut shells. The video is called; 7500€ für T5 mit Pumpe-Düse-Defekt! Nussschalen vs Soda: Was reinigt verkokte Einlassventile besser? Cheers Nik

I think the funniest part is that you keep saying 1998 like it was a million years ago. Doesn't seem like that long to me but then I've got a lot of stuff that's even older like my 1985 Toro snowblower the boatload of tools from the same time period and then there's the '70 Chevelle. These years pass all too quickly and 1998 seems like just yesterday to me. Great job rehabbing a real workhorse.
To put it into the proper context. .. In 1998 we were still using dial-up modems. Remember? Pepperidge Farm remembers. It's ages ago to a modern kid. By the way I'm using a 1978 Lowe with a 1999 Johnson on it.
I have 1963 Chrysler 15hp two stroke with 75 and 80 psi on compression test, it starts and runs great. Nice video seeing all the water at the end of winter
Always love your videos. You make it look so easy. The explanation is always easy to understand and I love the music and the video at the end… Keep them coming.
Yup needle bearings on rods and also ball bearings on the crank they are allready rattling like a bag of nails probably won’t last too long before they fail
I was lucky in a similar situation, scored same motor on a boat that had sat for many years and was covered in shit. A good clean out and runs great for dirt cheap. I can imagine people finding these motors for decades to come and doing the same haha
Like ending videos with the drone shot. Maybe show how to disconnect and connect the shift shaft when you lower the lower unit. Could prevent damage to shifter.
great video i love great deals like that i picked up a wilson flyer 14ft with a yamaha 85 hp 1990 that had been sitting in a drive since 2007 all we did was clean the carbs , new plugs and freed the engine off away she runs and with buying it and parts it stands me in £450
I had one similar and ended up under water for months until I found it cleaned the carb let it dry out and it’s was perfectly fine still running good after 3 years
I really need to learn how to seek out these barn finds. I bought a boat with a motor thats 10% of what its rated for. I want a 30hp (boat is 60hp rated) but I dont want to spend 1-3k on a replacement when I bought the entire combo for $800.
I completely rebuilt an original 1964 Kiekhaefer Mercury, four cylinder 50hp. I did that in 1983 when I was 18 years old. Easy peasy. What really hacked me off in your video was you taking a Brillo pad to remove the over spray and then take said Brillo pad to the rest of the outer, original paintwork. Lazy, stupid and detrimental. Best regards from Hartlepool, England.
Nice job. By the way one of the boats out there by the sunken sailboat is mine. I have to fix a inflatable so I can get out there and check out my sailboat.
I grabbed the 3 carbs (334329-in) off of a boat motor which was headed to the metal recycler as scrap... to my surprise the carbs are clean inside and out, I dont boat and have no engines... oh what to do with these carbs... does the boat world need these back? or with time are they now obsolete / junk?

Wow lol
A little pressure goes a long way!

Everyone of these videos I watch is just like a training video to help me better understand how to examine an engine I want to purchase.

Nice work. It great to how you bring these things back to life.
You do a Beautiful job on your videos, and I enjoy each and everyone of them. You are also a GREAT mechanic! Keep up the Good Work!

Why is a guy fixing boat motors so fascinating to watch.
All depends on the needle bearings , might run well now but if you have any corrosion on them they will rapidly fail

Love your bring back to L.I.F.E. Vids. You The Man.
This is awesome man!!! I get overwhelmed when working on my motors for my sailboat. I have a outboard well, so I use a 10hp 2stroke evenrude
These motors you work on are definitely my childhood ones lol, great job bud
That cleaned up nicely! Good work!
Yamaha really does make a great outboard. Mines a 1994. Runs awesome!
Yes! I have almost the same motor. Nice to see you work on the small outboards again

I'm enjoying these. Do you have a video on how to set up a motor height and angle for optimal speeds?
Great Vlog bro and thanks for going over this motor really like this 2 stroke i gess they r better then 4 stroke EFI CRAP now dayz
Great video. Really enjoyed it. I have a 2006 that looks identical to this 1998. It's a real workhorse

That thing must've been sitting in a cabinet shop that's the only explanation for the excessive sawdust and paint on one side
Again WOW. Nice work
Great video. This kind helps to provide information for future use. Thanks
You know your engines thats awesome.. 200 bucks ...120psi on both cyl. Plenty of life left.
Liked it before the video even started, this is want we want, do some mercury videos too!

Hello text me on whatsapp +2348053757125
excess oil in the cylinder will give higher compression readings
sounds great
Awesome video. Definitely post more like this.
Do you unhook the fuel line and let it run out of gas to check compression or do you just shut the engine off pull the plugs and check it?
Clay Bars for overspray...no scratching from the brillo
Great episode. More like this please.
Dip those carb parts in Barnacle buster
I’ve got a 1995 25hp Mercury that’s been sitting up for 10 years. Is there a vid that’ll walk me through the steps?
Luckily I just threw a new fuel filter and fuel lines on my Yamaha 25 2 stroke and it was like new. took a 1000$ off the boat price too lol
