So about a year ago i got my first boat, started watching your channel. As a car mechanic i figured it be no problem to work on outboards. Yea i was wrong. But because of your channel ive been able to learn. In the last year ive repaired over 30 outboards, and made some cash doing it. So just wanted to say thanks. I spend more time now on outboards than on cars and never been happier.
I started watching (and immediately subscribed to) your channel a year ago for your restoration work on center-console boats. But-even though I'm not a mechanic-I really enjoy viewing, listening, and learning from your work on outboards. This session was/is terrific, in every respect. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and expertise with all of us who are addicted to small(ish) boats, Keep up the great work.
When I hear you say “I haven’t seen anything like this” while cleaning a carburetor we all know it must be bad since you have cleaned many on your podcast. Great job getting them all up and running and looking good.
You get so lucky with these motors. Every slightly questionable motor I have ever bought basically needed machine shop work. Wish I could just pull a carb off or replace a water pump. Geesh!
Outstanding TBG! Your videos are informational and therapeutic seeing how you methodically troubleshoot the issues of these outboards and boats, and restore them to life. The Sternmaster products appear to really come in handy...I'm glad they provided the gear. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work...God bless.
make sure you do the thermostat and poppet valve grommets as per the service manual! not an easy job but easier if you have 3 hands:) starboard side ... if the cylinders get too hot must pull the powerhead and check the water deflectors in the block. if they are old and crusty they wont direct water up top. i tap a new indicator hose on the top starboard side to burp all the air out.
Enjoy them all, moving back to Florida and when I get there I will look you up for my next boat or kicker motor, your videos helped me fix my merc 15, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated it! Be well
I love your videos. I had boat meters all my life, I'm no mechanic. I've learned a lot just watching you diagnosing all these problems with meters making it look so easy. Keep up the great work.
I DO thoroughly enjoy these videos on motor repair! I just bought a 76 Starcraft with a "Series 402" Merc 40 hp motor. It's been raining here solid for 3 days since I bought it, but tomorrow is supposed to be the 1st of many nice days ahead and I have been itching to check everything out! The seller did start the motor when I saw it 1st time - (dry - I didn't like that!) so it will have water this time and hopefully the impeller is good - but if not - just will need to replace. I'm starting with just getting it to run up to temp and go through the gears and after that will determine if I need to do carb work etc. By the way, got the boat/motor/trailer package complete with depth finder, oars, safety equipment, bumpers, lights - everything - for just $700!!! I'm planning to completely refurbish and customize the boat to match my truck and all new graphics too! :-)
You are incredible! We live in a throw-away society today. Good to see that there are people like you who still exist in this day and age. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for sharing them.
Dang wish I lived in an area that I could come across the yammies like you!!! I just got my dad's 1976 9.9 Evinrude running like a top. Hadn't ran in 20+ years. Your channel gave me the motivation to get it going!!! Thanks!!!!
Awesome you got a sponsor!! I tell you what I have been looking for project motors (Boat, Generator, etc) in my area and I can’t find any! It’s amazing you even stumble on so many good deals !
Awesome video! New to outboards - got a 2006 Mercury 15hp which runs fine thankfully but looking forward to learning how to maintain and your video is perfect for actually seeing various issues for first time - many thanks!
You Da bess youtube channel, I would start to buy, fix and sell motors just from watching your channel. But I like staying home and do nothing for a living. Great job on the videos! man.
Great video man I always set my idles just a touch high to allow for in gear idling torque and on a triple I make my centre carb a touch richer just to help cooler morning start ups
Top vid Eric nice of Sternmaster to come on board and help you out with sponsorship always nice to get freebies aye!! Now let's see Yamaha come to the party as well 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Great video, that 4-stroke Merc 25EFI "sips" fuel & gets great gas mileage, about double of a 90's Johnson 25hp 2-stroke that just guzzled enormous amounts fuel & oil.
Love your videos, always learn a lot from you. You're inspiring me to be an outboard mechanic. Looking forward to your future videos. Stay safe and best wishes
suggest that you get a 50g bucket for tank testing, using a hose to provide water can hide cooling issues (as you found with your recycling bucket) and it's supposedly better for setting in gear idle... great work, good luck!!! I miss fixin outboards
Good for you due to the work you've put into this channel this along with show and tell ...several years ago Kevin Costner stared in a movie named" A Field of Dreams" over all the tag line was built it and they will come...that is what your doing with your channel right...Good luck and keep building 'ThatBoatGuy'

Id love to know how youre finding these outboards. Word of mouth, consignment, auctions, craigslist? Trying my hand at flipping a few outboards now and put up a craigslist ad but its been slow, ive picked up only a 94 merc 15 2 stroke so far. Id love some advice! Thanks, i really enjoy your content.
